    Thank you for leading with with the message “you don’t have to follow trends”. I have always LOVED fashion but about 7 years ago I made the decision to stop buying and shop my own closet/downsize/wear and keep only the things I love. Since then I’ve only purchased few pieces that are missing in my closet and I could not be happier. Plus I see now that NOTHING is truly NEW in the fashion industry. Thanks, I do enjoy your content obviously.

      Totally agree. I was going to leave an almost identical comment then I saw yours, Victoria. Definitely appreciated that opening disclaimer (and Alyssa's outlook on fashion in general). Thanks for another fun video with the encouragement to thoughtfully choose what works for YOU, rather than pushing the "You HAVE to have this/more is better" message. 💖

    I have a love hate relationship with trends. I don’t like to look like everyone else and I don’t like to feel like I’ve just copiedt outfit from a magazine. BUT The thing I love about trends is that you can finally get hold of an item (colour, texture etc) that you really love because while it’s on trend then it’s available in every store.. and when trends go out of style ten I can get them 70% off so in a way I love trends and I love stocking up on trends that I love.

      @littlelady7843 Год назад +7

      Well said. That is my approach as well. This summer white was on trend which is my favorite color for clothing in the summer anyway. I had fun picking and choosing white tshirt, skirt, dress, jeans, pants, shorts of my taste from so many options.

    • @polishtheday
      @polishtheday Год назад +3

      Yes. I stock up on culottes, wide leg pants, bodysuits, turtlenecks and shorter tops - most of the time they’re too long for me - because I’ve been drawn to those looks for decades. It’s what I loved wearing in the seventies and then the nineties and now they’re back. I keep the best quality pieces forever. When wide leg pants started coming back in style a few years ago I already had a pair in my closet that I’d thrifted sometime around 2005.

      @@sarahoshea9603 I'll be dead by then. I stock up on colors I love when they come "in" because sometimes I can't find them ordinarily. There's a particular color of dark red that I found last winter that I've been looking for since the late 70s. No kidding. I bought tons of it when it went on sale this spring. I don't give a rat's patooty if it's trendy or not.

    Definitely helpful thank you! You are really teaching us how to shop our closets and resist marketing ploys. I have a pair of black faux leather leggings that I really enjoyed wearing last fall. Recently I saw the same pair in store in a chocolate brown color, so I grabbed them thinking they were going to be a wonderful addition to my closet. I tried them on with different things, sweater dresses, knit tunics, long plaid jacket, long cardigan. Then I was glad that I kept the tags on them and the store has a refund policy, because I discovered that I didn't need them. On me they weren't as flattering as the black, and I didn't have as many options as I imagined I would have. I feel this experience taught me some lessons.

  • @SoNick25

    I have stopped buying trends but love watching trends! However, I do take advantage of trends that I love when they come around! For example, I am a skirt and dress person, so the pleated skirt trend has been great for me. I have stocked up and will continue to wear them even when the trend dies down. I prefer tighter tops with looser bottoms so when the bigger sleeves came round, I didn't buy a thing because they don't suit me. So, what I have come to learn is that you should embrace it if it's your style, ignore it if it's not. Also, sometimes you need to try something before you know if it is or isn't, so thrifting is a good way to economically test the waters! Love your videos. Thanks XX

      I envy those who can shop from thrift stores! I'm 5'11", and nothing in thrift stores is EVER long enough...and in fact, even in regular stores is, either. I c-a-n sew, but time is an issue. I may make some time to sew a wide-leg trouser or two, and perhaps a maxi skirt...but truth be told, I actually look better in a midi length that ends just below my calves.

    I love trend reports! I can see what items and style I love and check to see if I already have them in my closet. If not, I can wait for them to hit mass retailers. It gives me time between runway shows and actual market saturation to decide if I want to add new items to my closet. Chelsea boots for example is one item I eyed for a couple of years but eventually passed because I stopped wearing ankle boots. Bomber jacket was a thing several years ago. I bought a man’s version that is oversized but more streamlined from Urban Outfitters back then. I still like it more than the quintessential Top Gun like leather bomber or puffer version.

    I switch over most clothes and footwear for each of the four seasons, which gives me the feeling of a new wardrobe every three months. I have limited closet space in my bedroom, and don’t need cashmere sweaters and tall boots in August, or shorts and tanks in January, anyway, so I move out-of-season items to another closet. This also gives me a chance to review and edit what I have, declutter, or put needed items on a shopping list. I saw a comment by a charity store manager the other day urging us to donate items only for the current season and I’m going to make more effort to do that. She said wrong-season items are often thrown away because they just don’t have space to store them for months until they come into season again. (Of course, I do have some things that stay in my year-round wardrobe, too).

It has always been “my color” and I love it’s integrated in the fall season. Color is always present In my life throughout the seasons althoug winter calls for black and brown a lot more. This was such a helpful way to break down the trends for people who do not intend to shop. I love that mindset as someone who owns many gorgeous clothes and has been alive long enough to see the trends coming back around. So it would be silly to shop every season.

    Canadian here, going through my clothes that have been in storage. I don’t do trends anymore. I, m fortunate enough to have lovely bespoke suits in colours that 1) suit my colouring 2) are classics. I like to see how fabrics become either generous in silhouette or tight to the body. But I’m an observer I don’t participate. I loved this video right from the opening, shopping my closet is an entertainment that helps me consider all the items in my closet
    and truly appreciate all the items I already own 😍

    Love all your insights as always! I do, however, want to know the make of the beautiful blouse you’re wearing. I can only pray I might find one really similar to it!! Thanks 😊

    I love fashion and trends even though I hardly follow them. I like the way you presented everything, which enables us to focus on key elements or colors we might like, already have or interpret in our own way. I definitely plan to add a bright pink sweater to my wardrobe for the winter, that I will knit myself. Sometimes a pop of color is all you need in the heart of winter. I've seen a lot of yellow in fashion editorials here (in France) but very little in the streets.

    Very nice! HOWEVER!!!!……texture is SO important! Weather it’s leather that looks like silk, denim that looks like leather, the special techniques Chanel uses for their knits, the watery flow of….cotton or linen? (How do the DO that?) Being able to manipulate textiles is an art and should not be overlooked. I find the BIGGEST reason I buy something new is the texture…of course fit, but texture has a large part IN that element as well! Love it lady! Haven’t bought anything new in a while, but always find inspiration in my closet! Aloha!🤙🏝❤️

    I love that you focus on sustainability. I kept seeing "haul" videos while searching for fall fashion, and I don't like seeing the waste that comes from fast fashion. Your video was the antithesis of that, which I really appreciate!

    Thanks Alyssa for the trending report. I enjoyed it. I agree with you that as long as you have style, you don’t need to follow trend. I have been minimizing my fashion spending since last year when I became a minimalist.
    We consumers consume the Earth.
    I have decided not to be part of it anymore.
    I keep on enjoying your video though. Please keep them coming with more conscious spending videos.

I think it’s fun , I also fluctuate my wait so I just keep my clothes , I did purchase a dress new for my sons wedding , trying to find out what to wear for weddings and not black I have my grand sons wedding coming up .
