I love this movie so much. It's like someone sat down with the express intention of writing a screenplay even crazier than Malignant, and they were a huge Cronenberg/Carpenter fan. Also, fun fact: this was apparently based on Dorian Gray.
You mentioned Requiem for a Dream and that's exactly what I think of when we see those creepy old men near the end. I keep waiting to see one of them say "Ass to ass!".
I have seen men saying that the movie is exagerated. I have had men tell me to "smile" within an hour of my father passing away. I remember it like yesterday. I went home with the bus from the HOSPITAL. The bus driver picks me up at a HOSPITAL and still says "You would be more beautiful if you smiled". I told him that my dad just passed away and then he apologized. What the hell man.
I think you guys are too harsh on her old self calling her witch abd all, I get it it was a joke but the movies point is literally this that everytime Sue uses more Time elisabeth ages more rapidly, she wasn’t a witch or looked bad it’s just what really old age look like I have seen people who looks like that. I am a gay man, and while I did enjoy the moments of dark comedy, I too was horrified for the most part. Maybe because body image is a big thing in the gay male community too.

So Margaret Qualley is the daughter of Andie MacDowell. She’s a pretty big actress and you would probably recognize her if you look her up. Also some good things I seen Margaret Qualley in before The Substance: Maid (an amazing mini series on Netflix from 2021) and she’s worked with Yorgos Lanthimos in both Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness. A lot of people really loved Poor Things and there are mixed reviews on Kinds of Kindness but I thought Kinds of Kindness was phenomenal. One of my favorite movies in the last year and I highly recommend!
It’s interesting that the Sue part of her is aware of her beauty. I don’t think most non celebrity woman realise they are beautiful whilst they are young….its a realisation that shocks you when you are older looking back at photos from your past. Or at least it was like this for me. I was so insecure about my looks & self worth when I was at my most beautiful it’s really sad looking back on it. As I’ve got older I’ve cared less & less about how society perceives me to the point where I give zero f**ks now. I guess if I had been in an industry like Elisabeth things might’ve been different, I don’t know 🤷🏻♀️
yeah, I look at older pictures of me (well, when I was younger) and am like, damn, and I used to be critical of myself back then? I guess in this movie it was the older Elizabeth (the older 'us' who appreciates our younger selves now) who went back to a young body...thus she DID appreciate it a lot more (as Sue)
Watch the director's other movie REVENGE,.which was also directed by Corali Fargeat whjo diected sthis movie and it stars Margaret Qualley (Sue). The A$$ fetish represents the 'Male' gaze.
The scene that actually felt the most vulnerable to me was Elisabeth just looking at herself naked in the mirror and just zoning in on every detail of her body. Like we got an early-mid 60’s Demi Moore embodying the themes with absolutely transparency. We all look at her and go “holy shit, Demi Moore looks incredible” but it his so hard because you can see how the character doesn’t feel that way and that’s could easily extend to pressures on Demi herself throughout her career in a more meta way.
For anyone who doesn't know. This movie kinda implies that Elizabeth doesn't know what Sue is doing. So thats why she asks that "she didnt know what she was thinking" it implies that Elizabeth has no control in sue in some ways.
I loved the hell out of this movie! This might be my favorite Demi Moore performance. Her angst scenes and descent into total dysmorphia and decrepitness was pretty amazing. I need more from this writer/director.
This was your funniest reaction. This movie was wild. The whole theater i saw it in was loud! The laughs, the sad scenes, the horror, gore, the butt close ups, lol it was a great film.

I am a gay man, and while I did enjoy the moments of dark comedy, I too was horrified for the most part. Maybe because body image is a big thing in the gay male community too.
@@lockekappa500 same here, I lost over 100lbs and still spend hours changing outfits and stuff before a night out.
@@nelsonthbuddy that’s the most narrow minded thing I ever heard
You generalise all men's and women's reactions based on watching a reaction of 1 man and 1 woman? I'm a man and this film is pretty horrific
I’m seriously about to subscribe to Patreon finally, i have 3 absolutely amazing reactions you would LOVE,
1. 30 Days of Night (Insane Kills)
2. The Blob (OG Practical affects)
3. Suspiria Remake
(One of a kind, Ballet Dancers using each others as Vodoo dolls)
Subscribe. I love it, so worth it and longer reactions
THANK YOU for reacting to The Substance! Now we just need to get Zzavid, Nicksaysboo, and Horrobandwagon to take the Substance!!
I LOVE HOW THE electric' MIXER SOUNDS like a Buzz Saw
The way men and women view this so insanely different….i get it’s a reaction/commentary but i feel like the dude needed to stop and actually absorb what he was watching instead of making quips every 0.5 seconds.
Finally! Ive been waiting you guys to react to this movie. Best body horror of 2020s for me.
Found you guys with Yellowjackets and stayed on for the rest! Love you two!
They are two of my favorite reactors. They rock!
The tooth thing really happened to me, because of a poor root canal. You cannot push the tooth back in.
I’ll hope mines would will go as planned because my wisdom teeth needs to be gone for good
i fucking love yall
How sad is it that "old naked lady" is a common(ish) horror trope? (The Shining, the new IT part 2...)
Newer version of Death Becomes Her, love it
When elisabeth says F off the whole theater bursted into laugher.
Watch the director's other movie REVENGE,.which was also directed by Corali
Fargeat whjo diected sthis movie and it stars Margaret Qualley (Sue).
The A$$ fetish represents the 'Male' gaze.
Demi Moore’s performance reminds me of Ellen Burstyn’s performance in Requiem for a Dream. Both phenomenal.
Not quite, but close.
This is like the mother daughter rivalry.
She got beat like invincible did by Omniman
She took the saying -you are your own enemy to seriously-
For anyone who doesn't know. This movie kinda implies that Elizabeth doesn't know what Sue is doing. So thats why she asks that "she didnt know what she was thinking" it implies that Elizabeth has no control in sue in some ways.
David Cronenberg and Brian Yuzna will be proud.
Funny how the most disgusting things in the movie were all these random close-ups of Dennis Quaid.
Great reaction! I appreciate that you two appreciated that double bass heavy metal blood bath. 🤘
Amazing reaction! You are the only reactor that ive watched who picked up on the "the blood is on all of our hands" imagery
I’ve never seen Cody react like this to a movie 😂 definitely my personal movie of the year and I’m so glad you guys love it too!!
we call the blood sausage "boudin noir" and it's delicious with fried apples. some spicy ones are made in the caribean islands too.
I loved the hell out of this movie! This might be my favorite Demi Moore performance. Her angst scenes and descent into total dysmorphia and decrepitness was pretty amazing.
I need more from this writer/director.
This movie is so sad, God, I burst into tears when people started attacking Elizasue
OMG your commentary was hilarious 😂😂😂😂 thanks for the laugh
I had a kitchen like that. it's called a Galley Kitchen
This was your funniest reaction. This movie was wild. The whole theater i saw it in was loud! The laughs, the sad scenes, the horror, gore, the butt close ups, lol it was a great film.
This is great, I will watch it with you guys, I fainted at the cinema!! love from Argentina
One of my favorites movies, absolutely tragic masterpiece
I just watched this! What a bonkers movie. I had to watch everyone else’s reaction to it. The sound design in this movie is incredible.
Movie of the year for me, im so happy y’all reacted to this and loved it just as much as i did!!!
Demi Moore looks
SO BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!😍
So… did Anyone Else do the actual Pump it Up workout video from 2004? It had to have been the inspiration for Sue!
Apparently the music video for Call on Me by Eric Prydz was a big influence!
I wont be able to look at Dennis Quaid and shrimp the same way again.
12/10 movie...absolutely love it.
Omg I was waiting for you guys to react to this! Glad you loved it❤❤❤ so happy to see you appreciate it
