- Miss USA 2016 - Question and Answer
Poor Miss California. When Nadia Mejia was asked about social and economical inequality in America during the 2016 Miss USA pageant, she couldn’t exactly come up with an answer. In fact, at one point, she closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Watch!
Oh no! Every year there’s always one flub of the night, and this year’s belonged to Miss California Nadia Mejia. During the 2016 Miss USA pageant on June 5, judge Nigel Barker asked her about social and economical inequality, and unfortunately, she totally blanked when trying to come up with an answer. It was so hard to watch.
well she should have answered "thats a difficult question because if top economists and politicians havent been able to figure that out for decades and decades, how can a 20 year old in a peagant come up with a satisfactory answer?
they ask them these questions just to take the piss, thats one of the bigger attractions to watch these things to see what kind of dumb answers these girls will give to some of the hardest questions there is, and they have only a few sentences to answer them
y'all expecting her to solve poverty in 5 seconds. none of you could answer as gracefully as she did. she did fine for the question being on the spot
In 15 seconds or less explain quantum physics
The answer is 67 Orangutans. What is the question?
+Piotr how many oragutangs are the equivalent to your mothers weight?
+DefaultFrost 0.5
+DefaultFrost i would say at least 12
Even politicians can't answer this question. Poor girl
This is what happens when we value beauty over brains
exactly
Tab Valentino Ok think whatever you want but that wasn't even really the point
It's a beauty that's what they should be doing here, I don't understand why the ask these questions
+Cornwall1888 agreed
You couldn't do this answer in 15 seconds
Wasn't that bad. She tried her best why can't people appreciate that?
She could not answer because of the nerves I think but she did a great come back. Dont be so harsh.. she persevered.
Flub? Considering the complexity of that question, I think she did great!
I was just thinking the same thing. I mean what she said sounded like complete waffle but still no different than any politician speaking.
As soon as she said "rich," what she really wanted to say, "I love the rich! I am the rich! Poor people damn right need to work harder!" Can't get any more air-headed than that.
🤣🤣🤣👏👏
I'm not gonna lie, I don't know the awnser.
Rich people should give all of their money to poor people, who then become rich and give all of their money to poor people. It's called circle jerk economics.
Waffen I'm now Miss California's economic advisor.
Omgosh it makes so much sense! The world would be reborn! This is the key to the rebirth of the world!
Rant Therapist Thanks, I'm smart like that.
That's still more effective than trickle down..lol ;)
She did fine if you ask me.. She's a beauty pageant contestant, this isn't a political debate.. Should we really even be asking them questions like this? Lol.
So their whole existence on this earth is for them to look good, why do we even teach them how to speak.
+Intellectual's Internet If you're on a beauty pageant, you need to be physically beautiful. These questions are retarded, and they just want to hear stupid answers that get viral for the show.
You don't get extra marks in your chemistry test for being attractive, do you? Why should a girl in a beauty pageant be awarded with intelligence? Even though it has no real correlation with intelligence.
I agree, +Denny Kaleal. They shouldn't be answering these types of questions. They should be answering questions related to the job they are applying to. Miss USA will not have a saying on national economy.
@@intellectualsinternet7184 just shut up.
@@bobkuusela3273 No but she will probably sleep with someone who does.
TBF, that's a deep question that most career politicians and pundits couldn't answer.
This was a really tough question. You did a great job Miss California!
Wrong. The answer to the question can not be answered by any one else besides you. In America, YOU decide if you are going to be rich or poor. Not the government nor anyone else.
the american dream is dead. institutional racism is alive
First off, I don't think she answered this question too horribly. I met her a few years back and thought she was very smart and mature and thought she was 10 years older than she really was. She has a bright future regardless of how she came across trying to answer an incredibly difficult question in 30 seconds.
She felt the pressure. Her ability to focus (like we haven't seen a professional athlete miss an opportunity) was impaired. She pulled herself together and responded coherently. It was OK. Nothing new here.
all I got to say is she cute
Same lol
irl.She was more nervous than anything else. Poor girl.
Im telling ya'll there's a middle class alright
I don't care about Miss USA's views, I just care about how hot shit is
That wasn't that bad.
Wasn't that bad? She sounded like a politician. Saying nothing at all. Then again, that's probably why so many people like it.
That's cause you're dumb
nah you're right..it wasnt fucking horrible..It wasnt great, but it wasnt that bad...
She said nothing, just repeated buzz words that make no sense.
She's a beauty queen
Nadia does know about the poor. She slums it with us here in a small town in Kentucky sometimes visiting her family here. And she is not on drugs! I can't believe someone would say that about such a gorgeous young lady! Believe it or not she has a tough schedule to keep up with being Miss California & getting ready for the Miss USA competition.
Wow. Get me on that stage. Deregulate so entrepreneurs can have a chance at success. Allowing for competition drives down prices, helping the poor to receive services and goods at fair rates instead of being denied services because of cost and jobs due to minimum wage/low-skill levels.
And now she's going to compete for Miss Ecuador 2024. This is the one people say is a front runner for their crown. Hopefully she brushes up on her world issues and foreign affairs, so she can ace her Q&A.
Awe, give her a break. There was like a zillion people watching, and her nerves got to her. It could happen to anyone of us. Much success on your career, Nadia!
One of the biggest problems facing the world today and you're all taking the piss because she couldn't come up with an answer on the spot. Pretty sure there's people that could be classed as genius's working to solve problems like this and they can't even find a reasonable answer.
My opinion - Make high earning companies, for example google, pay a certain percentage of annual profit back to the people. Not a tax but an agreement of being able to trade in selected countries.
You understand that that is what a tax is?
Google provide jobs for workers who pay tax directly via income tax and indirectly via vat. Increasing corporation tax could give them less of an incentive to trade and become competitive, or just decreasing their chance to have retained profit to reinvest to create new products people can buy and spend vat on or more jobs for workers, decreasing unemployment and increasing the amount of income tax payers. After all the UK and probably other governments main source of revenue is income tax. Just my opinion bruh
A one minute fiasco doesnt define who she is ,or how smart she is. Give her a break....geez.
She did a good job!!
Can't believe they ask this type of questions to beauty pageants. It is like asking a maths equation question to a 2 year old.
How hard is it to say "make sure the rich pay their taxes"
Hey dumbass, obviously you have to give an impartial answer that won't anger the rich or the poor.
+William W. Why would the rich be angry? Only assholes would be angry. Plenty of rich people advocate this. Check out Ben and jerry's
Some people have been complaining about the question; other people have been complaining about the answer. I don't think the question was unfair at all and I thought her answer, once she got past the brain-freeze moment, was perfectly adequate. Rich should be more giving; the poor should work hard, etc. Okay. The time gap in her answer does nothing to negate the reasonable response she provided. She did just fine, IMHO.
Dude, the poor aren't poor because they don't work hard.
+DavidFrat123 I agree with you, but they're both valid points.
+Carolee Kelly let them eat cake!
Tbh are we really expecting these women to be there mentally? This is a beauty pageant for christ's sake. I really don't care what she thinks about issues anyway. Just vote for the hottest and be done with it.
She deserve noble price of the eco
I think she did a really good job with the difficult answer with only seconds to think.
Okay now internet, let's not fool ourselves and think we could answer this question with precision and detail on the spot like Miss Cali was. The amount of pressure mixed with only seconds of thinking is enough to give anyone a brain fart. She handled herself well, if you ask me.
She answered the question very well.
Even past presidents and economists were not able to narrow the gap between the rich & the poor! Lol.. How do you expect a Miss USA to solve that issue?? She got a difficult question but she answered in the best way possible. The nerves just got the best of her..
The rich need to pay their fair share in American taxes and create opportunities for Americans instead of shipping jobs overseas where they can hire someone to work for pennies on the dollar and setting up subsidiaries in tax havens. We need to force corporations to repatriate the money and bring it back to the U.S. In addition, we need to continue to offer government assistance to those that desperately need it until better and more long-term options become available. Thank you.
Why do you think the rich aren't paying their fair share already?
Could you define for me what a _fair share_ might be?
Also, have you read the Federal Income Tax Data recently? You might notice that the Top 25% of earners in America are contributing close to 86% of all taxes. The Top 5% are nearing a contribution of about 57%
The Top 1% are contributing 35%. To put this in perspective for you, everyone that makes over $35,000 is paying for 97% of all taxes in America. The people that aren't simply leech off those income earners.
It's good, but I bet you're not pretty....
they leech off how exactly?
Well said Jay
This reminded me of Miss South Carolina's meltdown at the 2007 Miss Teen USA pageant.
lol what, this is not a melt down at all, but i will go look at this video you mentioned
That's not even on the same level! That was far worse...
this girl answered the question fine, difficult question, south carolina was just dumb, help the kids in asia, such as
She wasn't readyyy !
At least she's right about the poor needing to work harder
Why do they ask these questions, like they ask questions economists can't answer, politicians can't answer ect
tbh that wasn't as bad as i expected it to be
The way people are carrying on, you would think the question was:
“Ernst Haeckel, the great biologist, was famous for coining the phrase ‘Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny.’ Do you agree with Dr. Haeckel? Does Ontogeny really recapitulate phylogeny?"
Judge: "Miss California, with out thinking what's one thing in the world you want?
California: "Uh....More time for thinking!"
I think the upper class should give back money... The poor should work hard... *deep breath* AND WE REDISTRIBUTE THE WEALTH TO CREATE A COMMUNIST STATE WOO
as the airs leaks from her head
This is much less terrible than what I expected. The media severely exaggerated her 'stupidity'. This is basically what anyone with no interest in economics and under huge stress would've done.
she gave an answer for a tough question than politicians can't solve. why beauty pageants get asked this type of questions that should be asked to politicians?
no shit...totally agree...asking these women those questions is like asking political scientists how to pick up girls...
she couldve started a revolution with the right words
She did ok
Why are we asking irrelevant questions in a beauty pageant?
What is the name of the background music?
Yes! Ask models significant society questions...
NGL I wouldn't know what to say...
- Isn't this just Monty Python's "Summarize Proust in Under a Minute" sketch?
I Would have said some shit like 'to bridge the economic gap between the rich and the poor, we could work to improve our education system in order to give greater opertunity to those with less money to achieve higher earning jobs'
THE ANSWER FOR THAT QUESTION IS THAT: YOU CANNOT NARROW THE GAP... THERES NO WAY... IT WILL NEVER BE. Unless the rich will share half of their annual income to the poor... But then there are negative outcomes into this. Plus i dont think the rich qoll just give their income to the poor. Maybe a couple of thousands. So yeah you cant!
why would they ask her a question like
this when its a beauty competition? most grown adults with jobs wouldn't know
My answer:
The first thing that needs to be done is not an act, but an avoidance of action. When people talk of welfare in this country, they usually refer to welfare directed at the poor, all the while ignoring the much greater quantity of government aid that is given to the wealthy. Not only this, but the aid given to the wealthy tends to allow the wealthy to make more money, whereas aid given to the poor tends to allow them to tread water at best.
watching this was more painful than child birth
This get me everytime 😂😂. Love to watch this just for laughs. She should have won with just her charisma alone.
This was an odd question, a serious one, but an odd one. She answered alright, as getting hit with something so serious out of nowhere. I mean, we could create a middle class since we no longer have one. Real family median income has dropped from $50,000 annually to $35,000, which was what it was in the 90's, yet college tuition has risen about 500% since then... I know my mother was making $22.50 an hour in 2005 and makes $9.75 an hour now (Over 10 years later) doing the same thing. Her previous job was outsourced to India, and another job was created to correct the mistakes by the previous job. She went to college and got her degree to do what she does as a Medical Transcript Editor. The job market is literally forcing people into poverty. If you plan on going to college to say become a doctor, or a surgeon, something that pays well, your going to be paying back student loans for half a lifetime. Average cost to become a physician all in all is about 1,000,00.00. 1 Million dollars. You'll be paying student loans for about 30 years, they could adjust them whenever they choose, and if the cost of tuition of your school rises, it tacks onto what you already owe, and if you don't pay the loans, they garnish your wages. They punish you for seeking a higher education, and then punish you after you receive your degree and start earning a decent living. It's not right. The price is just too damn high. People say "People who are poor, are poor because of the choices they make, they're lazy and do not want to work." This is simply not true. My parents are poor. Didn't use to be. My father got cancer, currently in remission, but he could not work, lost his job, and my mothers job was outsourced. So our median income dropped, then the recession hit... That's when the new income pivoted to the top. Everyone was scraping to get by, gas prices soared, this mainly affected low income individuals. Keep in mind, that low income is someone making 12k a year, which is low. But look at the poverty threshold. I don't know any one person who can live off $12,000 a year, pay for housing, schooling, car payments/insurance, cell phone bill, and groceries, as well as necessities, say you have a pet, doctors bills, or for an emergency. People will say "Don't have a pet, buy a used car upfront, (for what $4,000? That's almost half of the money you made that year. Get real.) But this is the reality for many people. And they have found that the most individuals earning minimum wage worker is 35 years old... Over 26% of our workforce makes under $10.50 an hour. I don't know a single person who could truly live off of that wage, regardless of how much overtime they work. The funny thing is that the minimum wage was established by Democratic Socialist president Franklin Delano Roosevelt, to get people out of poverty. By establishing a wage high enough to live well, because corporations were exploiting individuals in harsh work conditions with limitless hours of work. That is also why he established a 40 hour work week, and introduced the first child labor laws. And with this, we got out of the great depression. We established the food-stamp act that gave many families the right to healthy foods and to leave them with money to put back into the economy. He served 4 terms as president, until lobbyists passed legislation limiting presidents to two terms... He served as president for 16 years... Voted by the people.
My answer would have been, “I think the rich need to be taxed more, and we need to increase minimum wage so that way poverty levels decrease. Another thing that would really help reduce poverty would be to make college free, that way it can be easier for people to obtain an education and degree.”
Now who wants me as president in 2024?
"Viva Ecuador"... good thing you went home
Wooooooooooooow !!!!!!!!!
not even politicins in so much time know the answer
great answer!!!
We are only humans
too tough to answer, great job miss california...
I get the problem. People thought that the pageant questions were really dumb and girly, so they adjusted to the opposite extreme. It's really hard to find a happy medium with this.
She should have said to narrow the gap we need to start with parenting and second proper education.
Should have asked where is the nearest Starbucks is and if she could ask Siri
I still prefer the Miss South Carolina disaster... Now THAT was unbeatable.
Equality is a nice concept but it simply can't work
It there a point to asking these types of questions? I thought they were chosen for their looks not brains?
Ya, but what did you really expect?
Did anyone else spot the moment when her brain actually exploded?
Still do t know why they ask them questions. The entire competition is based around which ones the hottest.
para mi tiene la rason una aplauso por
Maybe they just need maps and such as?
hmm brains and beauty i choose beauty
Increase taxes on the rich (Luxury goods tax, mansion tax, inheritance tax, etc.), increase minimum wage, and set up unconditional basic income.
Well that's not fair. Anyone will have difficulty answering this question when asked on the spot, without any indication that there would be a question regarding this on a beauty pageant. I also fail to see how her opinion will influence the issue in any way. Oh right, it won't. The question doesn't fit the pageant. But for the record, I'll say sure. It would be nice for the rich to give a little more, for the poor to work hard (if they're not already), and for the middle-class to unify against the greedy 1% and government.
The simple answer would be "more jobs"
and world peace
Ok this is not nearly as bad as everyone is saying, I've seen some pretty terrible answers. Please look up Miss South Carolina in the teen parents of 2007, that's cringe worthy.
No entendí nada, alguien lo puede decir en español porfa... gracias.
CRINGE 😖
When she mummbled Oh my god, I thought dhe would run off stage or something. So painfull to watch.
All she had to mention was something involving resources and accessibility thereto. Obviously there's only enough time to paint the broadest stroke, but that would have been perfectly sufficient. Poor gal. Eh, the Germans have a word for the feeling watching this induced. It's called "fremdscham" and it's coursing through me right now.
She did fine, other than the poor needing to work harder...I'd just stare at them for a moment and then say "well for starters, we don't have these fucking superfluous contests that cost buckets of money and then maybe we'd be getting somewhere". That's just me
To be fair it was a pretty tough question, this is no where near to the level of miss teen usa's fail
Increase G. Decrease T
So because I'm not rich I don't work hard? Hmmmmm. I understand she was under pressure but...
🎵 if I only had a brain🎵
smoking too much of that cali kush
cali kush doesn't make you stupid. she must be on the blow
Why are we asking women questions like this?
I think she was just trying to find a different way of answering that dumb question that we all know the obvious answer to.
celebrity's daughter has no idea about the poor.. tough questions all around she did good over-all
Did she just say the poor needs to work hard...doh! I think at the end she really didn't know what she was talking about and wanted to get it over with. This was a Bernie Sanders question. LoL
I can't believe she said the poor has to work harder lol
