I was inspired watching Alex (Rudinger)'s AAL vids and wanted to try one on for size. Please check out his original video ( • Alex Rudinger - Animal... ) for Do Not Go Gently if you haven't already as his is MUCH better than mine anyways haha.
I used Alex's transcription (which can be found in his video description) basically note-for-note with 3 tiny exceptions that I could hear slightly different on the original recording.
As an added challenge, I decided to take the left-side-lead aspect one step further and play (nearly) all the kick parts left foot lead as well. This includes the continuous 16th note roll starting at 2:01. It's nothing particularly difficult speed-wise but it does add another element of coordination to the piece. There are a few places where in theory one could/should play some of the two note groupings as double strokes with one foot (as Alex does), but I opted to play them as singles to try and keep it as dynamically consistent as possible.
Drums were mixed by my good friend and bandmate Quinn Cyrankiewicz. I think he did a great job cleaning it up while still keeping it live/real sounding. There is (as should be quite obvious) ZERO editing or sampling on the drums and the whole thing is one full take. As a result there are a few flubs here and there as well as a few places where I'm slightly flamming with the original drums, but this was the 2nd take and I wanted to keep it fresh.
Shout out to Ehren Pheifer for lending me a camera, as well as Mike Mueller for lending me another camera and helping with filming!
Subscribe/stay tuned if you like what you see, I have more vids coming shortly!

wow u are actually really good.
keep vids coming man, im subbing
i like the fact that u get inspired by alex and travis. awesome.
Thanks for the kind words! Travis and Alex are both fantastic players, it's hard not to be inspired by their incredible work ethic and unique style. I'm learning a bunch of new material atm, will have more vids coming hopefully shortly.
Such a dead sounding snare! Fantastic video dude, totally nailed it!
So clean, very technical tune. Big well done man
I love the sound of your stack; so soft and subtle. Maybe not quite aggressive enough for this style of music, but very cool nonetheless. Your china sounds awesome too.
That's like saying, "I'm tired of seeing guitarist using the same amps." I've tried the "Orbinated" setting and it's pretty fun and challenging.
From one 'Orbinated' player to another - great job man! :)
great job, sounding good and solid
In this video I was using Evans Onyx 2-ply, a textured ebony head. Somewhat in between coated and clear perhaps. Though these days I tend to favour a clear 2-ply, ie G2/Emperor, EC2/Pinstripe.
This is "only way" to play Animals as Leaders on drums! A tom on either side of the snare!!!! Great vid!!!!!
Wow, right on dude. Those off snare punches were really tight,
Fantastic job
If we're talking about the influence to the set up, it's Travis. If the guy is talking about his influence to the song and how it was played, he's talking about Alex. Or I guess I'm assuming so. Anyways, point of this was, the kit is a Travis influence, as Alex has stated before in his videos when he set's up his kit like this. Sorry for the confusion.
I saw Travis Orbin pressed Like on this Video.. And I now I'm watching it !! Dude.. You're the Second Travis :D
100% righty dominant. Been experimenting with the open-stance thing for about a year or two, every day is a fun challenge!
damn props to playing so well open legged throwing you a sub!!
Yeah man! Great group of guys, we toured with them last year.
Fucking amazing bro.. you are sooo good with the open set up I'm def subscribing
Great job!
It's a cover video...that's the point. Even without trying it's still his own because he's going to play it with his groove and feel.
Thats awesome dude learning to be ambidextrous is an amazing skill
@bl00ber99 That's probably becuase his kit is set up like orbins, and he plays like Orbin. Plus Akex wasvtaught by Orbin anuways
Well done
you did a pretty good job! you don't have to hide behind alex's cover
amazing drumming, and sick hat dude! T.O. ftw
Well done man!
Mainly a mechanical thing ala Travis/Alex to stress the weakest link. It's definitely become more natural over time though!
Great job man. How would you rank this song in terms of difficulty to learn, relative to other songs you've played?
Great cover, keep it up.
I never understood how drummers play like they re both left and right handed. Im struggling playing right handed alone after all these years.
It's not as hard as it looks. takes allot of work, but once your there it's comfortable.
If you truly practice seriously for 6 months there will be no difference between your
left and right side. I teach all my students open handed but once they have that down
i let them choose how they want to play and proceed from there.
Only 6 months? Great!! The problem is that my brain tells my right hand to start the fill/groove automatically, i dont know if i can break this habbit
Sure you can. I recommend you start with simple 4/4 and leading with the left hand and do some simple rudiment fills, also switch to leading with your right hand when on the ride with 4 strokes on the snare using doubles. rrll and ofc when you go back to left hand lead on the hi-hat it's llrr.
I'm digging that snare.
The dude playing is pretty good too. :P
i can see some intense alex rudinger influence here
2:02 - 2:41
Damn dude. So good man! Post a few more!
Hopefully I'll see you soon?
идеальное расположение
Good job dude
All his equipment is in the description.
indeed :)
Alex rudinger is heavily influenced by the orbinator, hence some influence there.
2:03 - right stick becomes invisible......
nice cover as well!
*I was inspired watching Alex (Rudinger)'s AAL vids and wanted to try one on for size* in this videos discription just read
Damn good job dude! A lot fucking better than I can play it.
Dude, Sick cover. What consists of your stack btw? It sounds killer.
To be fair, one couldn't ask for a better role model than the Orbinator :)
nice job mixing the audio.
Just a thing I noticed that when most of the time you lead with your left foot and you do a pretty awesome job at it. But whenever there is a double you almost always play it as righty leading with your right foot like RL, except the continous 16th part you mentioned. Don't know if you did it on purpose or subconsciously.
im getting pretty sick of people not being original and only copying other drummers sets.. BE YOURSELF.
GREAT JOB! I wanna tune your snare though haha
wow, you kick mainly with your left foot? awsome vid btw
Awesome cover. Any tips on how I can improve my left hand/foot independence? How did you go about doing it? :)
its funny how no1 gets that he was inspired by alex rudinger not travis orbin.
@LOLitsJorge Why does it matter? I'm sure Travis likes the fact that so many drummers are influenced by him. I'm kinda sick of people treating drums like their some kind of trend. If he had your standard set up you probably wouldn't have complained.
Great drumming! ^_^ there's some Orbinator here....
Uh, no. Orbin. That's been his set up before Rudinger. If you watch Alex's videos, and read any of his descriptions, you'd know that this set up is Travis Orbins.
cheat sheet?
Just read the discription.....
what are you talking about?
Sorry for the stupid question but! Do you read the notes while you play? I haven't tryed to master that skill so i bet its pretty tuff to read notes and be presice and on top of that still manage to feel the groove.. God lord. I need to start practicing more!
What's so wrong about his double strokes? they sound fine to me
Are we talking about the set up, or the influence here? Because the setup is Travis's, and the influence is Alex.
alex rudinger?
даже палочки такие же
Haha ive only been playing for 4 years now :P think ill get the songs down before i try flip everything onto my non dominant side :P
Pearl Demon Drive!
buy in your first comment you said i see some travis orbin infules here. That got me confused
Legit dude.
you misspelled "Djently."
Amazing cover man! I am looking for the transcription, the link of Alex is dead... Maybe you can send it to me please? I would realle appreciate!
Great drumming again!
Thanks dude, glad you dig it! Hit me up on Facebook or send me an email: brentrodgersdrums (at) gmail (dot) com
Interesting set up you have there
And I like that left foot lead stuff you're doing
The only thing I don't really like is the following the music aspect. Feels artificial to me.
Work on either just memorizing it or just straight up learning by ear.
RIP AHR
Which tom heads do you use? And what kind of surface do they have?
Wheres my Textbook Cover? :(
Have you got the snare strap really loose?
Do you have the music to this song?
More like Alex Rudinger
What sticks do you use
are those trick pedals?
So good, but your snare was a little disappointing :/
In the teeth Philly xD
Dude, do you still have the drum transcript for this?!
Alex's transcripts are not loading on DropBox! Big hug and amazing job with that left foot leading!
Remove Luke Hallond from the list. I mean, come on.
Ugh, just go to Alex's page, look up his AAL Cover of Tempting Time, and read the damn description yourself. Fuck! Do your research!
Молодец Ваще Чуваааааак!!!!:)))))
