The Soul of Hall and Oates She's Gone , Sara Smile ,Out of Touch so many classics one of the best duo groups of the 80s soulful sound from the heart and believe had so much soul songs were on the R&B charts . Much love
@Heidi that's who - Darrel Hall is an admitted follower of Aleister Crowley a Satanic Luciferian demigog who created the Thelema religion & doctrine. Go research it for yourself.
This is just a perfect song. Hook after hook! And the vocal interplay is unmatched. What’s weird is that nothing else on the “Abandoned Luncheonette” album comes anywhere close to this cut. It’s like they spent three weeks on this one song and three days on the rest of the album. Even with all that it didn’t become a big hit until years later when Atlantic re-released it after “Sara Smile” became a hit (for RCA).
I agree that She's Gone is everything you said it is but a close second for me is Had I Know You Better. Check out the acoustic version they did on LFDH.
When I was a kid everytime someone at that playground would hit a home run there was a dude there who would start singing this song. Great video. Thanks for helping me rediscover so much music from my childhood.
Hall & Oates is one of those groups people sleep on - myself included. I saw them live in the 90s and thought, these guys are old news - they were opening for someone else, and as they started playing I realized every single song they did, I knew nearly by heart and was rockin with! I guess they might be considered a 'guilty pleasure' today, but seriously - talented, talented guys. Thanks for doing this!
One thing that hit Daryl so hard about his divorce was that he even changed his religion to marry her. He grew up Methodist but in 1969-1970 when he married his first wife he converted to Judaism. He still identifies with it although he doesn't follow any certain religion.
This is fascinating. I also remember exactly where I was and why I even heard “She’s Gone”, the first Hall & Oates song I ever heard. I was 14 years old in 1973 and working at a subsidized summer job at Lincoln University’s student radio station. I was working in the office. The college student who was working in the booth came out, grabbed me by the hand and said “You HAVE to hear this. It just came in.” He played “She’s Gone” off “Abandoned Luncheonette”. I remember standing, listening, and looking at the album cover. We were both blown away and he said “This is going to be a MAJOR hit. It has to be.” Well, he was right, of course, but it wasn’t until it was re-released as a single in 1976. What a wonderful memory.
I think how much we took this music for granted back in the day. So much great music all of the time. Miss these times so much! Just a different feeling with this music. So good.
As usual... brilliant reaction and analysis. I just went through a divorce after 31 years of marriage. Almost half my life! I was crying and laughing at the same time during this! The laughter is from Jamel and his reaction. The crying? Need I say more...
One of the most successful duo"s of all times. This is definitely blue-eye soul. The guys got started back in Philadelphia in 1970. Some much talent and variety from the 70's. Few other songs worth a listen by them, RICH GIRL, OUT OF TOUCH and SARA SMILE, all classics.
That sucks when you go into the bathroom during early daylight, all tired, about to brush your teeth - THEN reality hits when it’s like her tooth brush is just staring at you -> and that’s the way your day will begin until eternity, AT LEAST THATS HOW IT FEELS. No amount of your favorite food or drug or hugs is going to change one thing. All your favorite things just turn grey. IT DOES GET BETTER. Hold on.
Joe Bonamassa recednly did a couple-hour interview with Jon Oates *who moustache remains impeccable). I really like and admire Oates now, he and I got to the blues the same way - Mississippi John Hurt. (Do Hurt's "Pay Day", Jamel, it's mellow epic.) MJH also has really shot (30 second) song, "C-h-i-c-k-e-n". Tasty!
First of all..you have the most wonderful name (if it's your real name..lol). Secondly..You should check out 'Live from Daryls House' (if you haven't already) there are some amazing performances.
I love this song, but every time that I hear it, it reminds me of the movie “Better Off Dead” when Lane Meyer’s (John Cusack) girlfriend breaks up with him and while driving to high school in the morning, every sad breakup song comes on the radio for every station he tries. 😂🤣 The K-12! 🏔⛷ 🗞🚴🏻♂️ “I want my $2!” Love ya Jamel and all the best to your family! Christine in forest fire-ville CO 🔥
One of the best, most underrated movies of the 80s. In a great era for teen movies, that was one for those of us who appreciated things a little weird and absurd, and I loved it.
Magnifico Giganticus Mine, too! I was 11 when it came out and with older sisters and a single, working mom, I got away with seeing a lot of great ‘80s movies. Another fave is Top Secret. 🤣
srae1971 Totally! My family and I always quote that movie or say similar things. For example, when Lane’s mom tries to impress the French exchange student along with their freaky neighbors and everything is “Fraaaahnch” instead of French. We’ll still say that to this day, like, “let’s have some Franch bread for breakfast.” 🤓😂🥖
I feel that looking in the mirror just empty and hollow eyed when you've lost it all and wondering how you're gonna face the rest of your life and keep going. Great classic song.
Oates came up with the chorus and he and Daryl fleshed out the lyrics together. Interesting that in a duo dominated sonically by Hall’s incredible vocals that some of their most recognizable songs (She’s Gone, Maneater, Out Of Touch) are ones that Oates brought to the table.
Sara smile.

Daryl Hall is one funky dude
They have a cover of “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” that is good,. Also check out “Family Man”.
I definitely agree with "Family Man". Such an interesting song that was quite a bit different than a lot of their more popular songs, like this one.
Descartesdom77 different as it was written by Mike Oldfield
“I can’t go for that” is 🔥 as well!
👏👏👏
BRO I got one for you, you got to hear this guy sing,.... Robert John- Sad Eyes..... You will love it
The Soul of Hall and Oates She's Gone , Sara Smile ,Out of Touch so many classics one of the best duo groups of the 80s soulful sound from the heart and believe had so much soul songs were on the R&B charts . Much love
Dude, you gotta check out their cover of the Spinners' tune, "I'll Be Around." It's one of the best covers I've ever heard.
Agree. And the Spinners' own version is just classic.
Just discovered this after your recommendation. Wow
Didn't know they'd covered it.Checked it out and I thought it was just as good as Doug Parkinson's cover.
"I'd pay the devil to replace her"
Heidi that's who. been there, done that.
Worth every penny!!
@Heidi that's who - Darrel Hall is an admitted follower of Aleister Crowley a Satanic Luciferian demigog who created the Thelema religion & doctrine. Go research it for yourself.
Dang really?! I always sang it as , "it'd be a devil to replace her" like horrible hard work. Wow
Crowley was one messed up dude. Don't know why anyone would want to be one of his followers. But then, it _is_ that kind of a world isn't it.
I'd pay the devil to replace her. Never has a lyric been so true!
@@carolshoemaker798 Nice song! Thanks!
This and Sara Smile are my two faves by them. Love the old school feel of this song!
When I was a kid everytime someone at that playground would hit a home run there was a dude there who would start singing this song. Great video. Thanks for helping me rediscover so much music from my childhood.
Jamal look up Daryl’s rendition of I can’t go for that with Ceelo Green
From Daryl's house.
Thats a jam fo sho!!!
Good job of cee lo fuck you on daryls house
that one and sara smile (jimmy wayne)
That performance is just amazing
This really highlights John's vocals!!
It's weird but, I remember exactly where I was when I first heard Hall & Oates (Rich Girl 1976). I've been a fan ever since.
Me too! I had the 8 track tape.
I was at the roller skating rink haha
So can i....
Every time I hear Hall & Oates I am transported to the entrance to my college dorm. Yeah, right outside the front door, haha.
Just one of many great songs from Hall and Oates. Looking forward to seeing more of them on your channel!
I think how much we took this music for granted back in the day. So much great music all of the time. Miss these times so much! Just a different feeling with this music. So good.
You should check out their old album, Abandoned Luncheonette. There are so many great songs on that album.
Yes "Had I known you Better" is one of them.
As usual... brilliant reaction and analysis. I just went through a divorce after 31 years of marriage. Almost half my life! I was crying and laughing at the same time during this! The laughter is from Jamel and his reaction. The crying? Need I say more...
Check out the O'jays on live from Darryl's house you will love it!
That was a great episode
It's the best episode of that show. I still haven't deleted it from my DVR since it originally aired!
"Carbon and Monoxide..." Man, I love that lyric!!!! This song still holds up.
John Oats "I was the highest paid backup singer in history."
Oates. There's an E in his last name
Check out Daryl’s house with Rob Thomas singing this song with Daryl! It’s amazing!
Awesome version!
Wow. That was the "Philly Soul of the 70s!!" It was awesome!! I loved Hall and Oates, It brings back great memories of my youth.
Their best tune ever. One of the best tunes ever. Classic magic.
Kiss on my list.
I was thirteen years old when I first heard this song. I still love it. Great music lives forever. Thanks Jamel for keeping it alive.
Hope u'll do their big hit: "I Can't Go for That..No Can Do". Know u'll really like it alot!
Saw Hall and Oats so many times in concert, Blue eyed soul!!
Out of touch is i think its 80s
@@theodoreritola7641 You are right 1984, was going to correct it but forgot, great song!
Thats ok and yes
"Adult Education" is one of my favorites
Same here!
Yes!
Al Einstein and “Family Man”
Yesss! A favorite!!!
I thought it was a black vocal group when i first heard this..Haulin' Oats
Yeah, before "they" made up the term blue-eyed soul: there was Daryl Hall and John Oates!😍 Hello!
@@Zeldarw104 The Righteous Bros preceded Hall and Oates by ten years
I thought Hall & Oats was a breakfast cereal!
My mom thought it was one person: Harlen Oates. 😅
Nah man, Holland Oates. One singer named Holland. Hahaha
I thought they were black when I first heard them, the early 70s. So much soul!
Lol you had me at “the man’s moustache is immaculate”
Hall and Oates in the 80's. You could spend an hour walking through a mall and hear an entire album by the time you got to the other end.
@ted ritola I know. "When the Morning Comes" is probably my favorite H&O song. just reflecting on how big they were in the 80's.
Sara Smiles...pretty please with sugar on top...🙏🙏🙏
Yep, this one is about a loved who passed away, unfortunately.
Jamel has already done this one.
One of my favorites from Hall & Oats, such a smooth song. Thank you Jamel. 💕
"THANK YOU" my Brother 👊 I'm "Trying" to face that "She's" Gone 😢 It's minute by minute, day by day🙏
That sucks when you go into the bathroom during early daylight, all tired, about to brush your teeth - THEN reality hits when it’s like her tooth brush is just staring at you -> and that’s the way your day will begin until eternity, AT LEAST THATS HOW IT FEELS. No amount of your favorite food or drug or hugs is going to change one thing. All your favorite things just turn grey.
IT DOES GET BETTER. Hold on.
Yes, blue-eyed philly soul at it's best. No matter how many times I hear this song, I still get chills, and sometimes I can't listen to it at all.
Same here...
Tasty!
John Oates was so overlooked. His voice is just smooth. Still moves me. Love his new music too
First of all..you have the most wonderful name (if it's your real name..lol).
ChrispyCritter, I love that movie! A classic from my youth.
30+ years later and I'm still saying "I want my $2!". :-)
Hands down best hall and oates song. So soulful and perfect. The gutair is amazing and everything else. Sara smile is a second for me.
I feel that looking in the mirror just empty and hollow eyed when you've lost it all and wondering how you're gonna face the rest of your life and keep going. Great classic song.
My favorite H&O tune. Thank you!
I am a "Metal guy" but this song, you just FEEL it...
M. Von Drake Beautiful!
Aw, such a classic. Daryl (the blond) wrote this after his first wife Bryna left him.
No, you are wrong. John wrote this when he was stood up one NY eve night.
Well I'd read that it had been after Daryl's 1st wife left him. I beg your pardon.
We were all so young then. Jamal, another 20 years, we'll be 80 and you'll still be listening to our music!!!!! you'll be 60!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
70s Jams Jamel the best jam
Got to check out “I can’t go for that” with Darryl and Cee Lo Green. Over the top!,
