- "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" is a popular song by the American music duo Hall & Oates. It was released in 1981 as the second single from their tenth studio album, "Private Eyes." The song was written by Daryl Hall, John Oates, and Sara Allen.
"I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" became one of Hall & Oates' biggest hits, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also topped the R&B and Adult Contemporary charts. The song features a distinctive bassline, catchy chorus, and smooth vocals by Daryl Hall.
The lyrics convey a sense of reluctance or refusal to comply with someone's demands or expectations. The repeated phrase "I can't go for that, no can do" emphasizes the speaker's firm stance. The song's popularity and memorable hooks have made it a staple of Hall & Oates' discography and a classic of 1980s pop music.
Hall and Oates should have been inducted in the hall of Fame long ago!
I must admit that I didn't appreciate them back in the day. They just weren't "hard" enough. Now, as I've become older and much wiser, I completely love them! ❤❤❤
Exact same attitude, here--- I didnt see them as rockers, so I didn't give them a chance.
Watch Darryl's House with Joe Walsh. They kill it!
Same here. I'm glad l get the chance with RUclips to re-live some of those days.
@@MargaretSottile I know! I really like watching that show. They just play to play. So good. Love Joe!!
As a black teenager I was a big fan even bought there albums they were just too cool.
I'm their age, and loved them so much, they were devalued a little when they came out in the "hard rock" era. People said they were "bubble gum'. They were brilliant writers and singers. I love that you are bringing them back. Be Blessed
true but was on the radio 24-7, and you didn't mind! Good days
I hated that label, from what I've read Darryl Hall hated it too!
Oh they are great, especially Daryl Hall. Most people don’t realize what a phenomenal musician, vocalist and songwriter he is. I had their H2O album in the 80’s. You guys have got to check out the at Daryl’s House episode doing this song with Ceelo Green… it is FIRE!!!
Not to mention his keyboard skills!
A must watch for Hall and Oates...:Me and Mrs Jones" !!!
They kill it !!
This was so much my jam back in the 80's, & always loved Hall & Oats!!! You guys are so fun to watch, thank you 😊
Great review guys.... I'd like too see you guys react to Hall and Oates 'One On One' which really showcases Daryll Hall's solo vocal ability... His best performance that I have seen. Thanx!
I was able to see them and they were awesome in concert, I feel so lucky to see such a polished, talented group. They still rock it
There's a reason this is smooth. Hall and Oates are heavily influenced by the sound of Philly Soul. They loved Motown (Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight, etc.) and Memphis Soul (isaac Hayes, Green Onions, etc.), but were a part of the Philly Soul Sound.. McFadden and Whitehead, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Teddy Pendegrass, etc. That is where the bulk of their pre-1980s sound came from. This is part of that.
All I will say is this: React to Sara Smile, and if you dare, One on One. The issue with One on One: prepare to have a night with your partner after you do! 😉
What I heard was this was written about Hall & Oates record company about how they were being treated and not about a woman. Not sure if true but the lyrics fit.
Have you reacted to anything from Darryl's house? Darryl has different singers come and jam with him then they share a meal together. Darryl does this with Ceelow.
this is Philly soul
Hall and oates Always good in the black culture !
Simply Red also used this tune for their song Sunrise. A great song. Worth checking it out.
Used to listen to KiSSFM in Manhattan Kissing after dark and they would always play Hall and Oates and Bozz Skaggs Lowdown.
Growing up in Philly us whyte folks had no choice but to have soul. You either knew how to dance or fight, if neither, you better move somewhere else...and I think these guys were from the burbs but the whole city loved this jam
One on One by Hall and Oates!!
Like you said,..very few words,..but see it's the harmonies,..stretching the words.out, the arrangement, interjecting more instrumentation here, there,..like you said these guys(huh and you seemed shocked) were born in the 40's,.yess, and growing up into the 1950's,..the "doo wap" area, that was fed to them during their childhood,..for my mom, dad they were young adults,..The Platters,. Frankie Lymon,..that, the big band era was still in swing as well,..Hall and Oates had all that influence,..yess they were instrument players, hands on instrument, piano, horns,
and yess many more great songs, Sara Smile(ohh so, so sweet), You Make My Dreams,..Maneater, do keep going, do enjoy,..Godspeed, Peace ✌
Hello from Savannah Georgia , I enjoy hanging out with you guys .
Hall & Oates are one of half a dozen white artists played on SiriusXM Channel 49 Soul Town.
Such a vibe.
blue eyed soul baby:)))
a few groups sampled this one
Y’all need to hear Daryl and Cee Lo Green do this song on Live From Daryl’s House! Absolute FIRE!!!🔥
Just about to post the same! Love the funk. Such a great show, Daryl had some great guests performing. Always so interesting to see how they jam together and re-interpret Hall & Oates tracks
🔥🔥🔥
Just switched from cable to streaming and I no longer get AXS tv. I loved that show. I miss that channel.
@@kerrycronin3581 lol, I feel your pain. Based in the UK so have relied on YTube for clips 🙄
"Oh shit white people can sing!" That's so funny. I love y'all's honesty. I love this channel, you should have a ton more subscribers.
Darryl’s house…. With CeeLo
De La Soul sampled this
Dope
NOTHING touches those 3 decades,60’s,70’s and 80’s.
NOTHING.
Certainly not todays soulless trash.
Agree!!
H&O also got de la Soul...
Maneater is my favorite from them ❤
Michael Jackson was inspired to write Billie Jean after hearing this song.
To think, at the time, this and basically all their songs, were so overplayed...only now I'm appreciating them...figures!
Hey you should check out ‘Live at Daryl’s House’ with CeeLo Green singing this song with Darryl! It’s pretty sweet.
Yes! It’s fantastic! They are in the groove and having fun.
I thought was just Me! LFDH is off the freakin chart good...and they always cook something and break bread together, wonderful show!
Abso-Phukking-Lutely!
Oh hell yeah. Must!
Love this one!
😂😂😂 "White people can sing!" ❤ of course we can, man!! I'm a pretty good dancer too!! 😂😂😂
We just can't dance...😂😂😂
@@tonythegoodman I dance really well, thank you. 😊
@@kierstenridgway4634 if it wasn't for the show Soul Train is white folks never would've learned to dance..
Same, Sis!!
@tonythegoodman765 that there sounds like a challenge! Been dancing great since popping out of my mom's belly. Lots of good music growing up in Brooklyn, where dancing was like breathing.
Michael Jackson borrowed the baseline for Billie Jean
This song is actually not about a girl, it was written in a couple of minutes on the fly, as they were leaving a writing session in the studio. The record company had just made a promotional request of them that Darryl Hall thought crossed the line - he was mad and wrote the song as a way of drawing the line.
Record companies really made it hell for musicians didn't they? Even Ted Nugent's Stranglehold was actually directed at the record company for trying to tell him what to do. I know there's other band who did the same, but they're not coming to mind on the fly.
@@CuzKatieSaysSoRush with 2112. Record company told them no more concept albums. Rush said, “Hold my beer”.
It works on multiple levels, though, so we can all enjoy it as we hear it.
Hall and Oates was the epitome of Blue Eyed Soul from the late 70's to mid 80's.
You guys are killing me😂🤣😂 ‘Live at Daryl’s House’ with CeeLo Green singing this song with Darryl is a must!!!
This song takes me back to a time and space: I was living in California but working in Florida for a month. The rental car had only AM radio. I listened to this song and Billie Jean continuously and by the end of the trip I was “I can’t go for THAT anymore!!! No can do!!” 😎 Now, all these years later, I can!! Good reaction, Gents!!
MJ was inspired by this song and wrote Billy Jean. It was the bass riff.
I have seen them in concert at least 10 times. LOVE THEM! Blue eyed soul. You should do more.
You gotta see the recording with Ceelo Green Live from Daryl's house
You MUST check out Live at Daryl's House. It is an endless amount of awesomeness. Specifically, you gotta check out CeeLo, Daryl, and Daryl's band do this song. It is incredible! I've always loved Hall & Oates. They had so many jams.
You fellas need to do a reaction to a song from the web-series, LIve at Daryl's House, where Daryl (no John Oates) hosts various famous artists to perform Hall & Oates classics or the artists' classics. A great place to start would be this song with Daryl and Cee-lo Green. Or, the famous '70s Philly Soul group, The Ojays visiting Daryl's house to do their 1973 hit, *"For The Love of Money".* These performances are available on RUclips.
Brothers, I gotta put in the fifth vote for One on One…I scrolled through the comments, and four others recommended that same song….I hope you find the time
Deep track Everytime You Go Away. Written by Daryl Hall and recorded by Paul Young. Young won the Grammy for his performance and Hall won for writing. The Hall & Oates version is nice and soulful. So good. Check it out!❤
Hall & Oates version is going to church!
I prefer the Paul Young version, myself. More interesting arrangement and I happen to really like the singer and his other stuff as well.
The Hall and Oates version is soooooo much better. Please react to that one-mot the Paul Young version.
Amazing duo/group that churned out hits.. I hope you check out Possession Obsession -- here, John Oates is on lead. It is a smooth tune, a fave of mine.
HEY GUYS MICHAEL JACKSON got one of his famous beats from this song , YOU GOTTA DO SARA SMILE
I wasn't a big fan of Hall and Oates in the 80s but quite like them now although I prefer their earlier songs like "Rich Girl" and "She's Gone".
CEE LO GREEN !! at "Daryl's House" is the best version ever!!
This !
This is one of my favorite Hall and Oates songs❤🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
John Oats sings great too. Possession Obsession is smooth!!
Took the words right out of my mouth. Possession Obsession is a helluva song💯
Top selling duo in history
This song came out around 1976. Fellas, , for the love of God, please react to Daryl
And CeeLo doing this together. Best thing ever!!!❤❤❤❤
You guys need to go deep on Hall and Oates doing "Do What you Want, Be What you Are", and then listen to the Dramatics do their cover of it. Underrated to say the least. Powerful song.
They’ve got a ton of great songs. She’s gone, Rich girl are a few.
Another great 80’s soulful band would be Simply Red. Holding back the years and If you don’t know me by now were mainstays on Urban radio back in the day.
Funny you should mention Simply Red. They sampled this song!
Yes! On the song Sunrise. Also a banger.
Maneater
There’s a fantastic cover of this song produced by simply red called sunrise
It's FABULOUS.
You’d love One On One!
Watch the O’Jays on Live From Daryl’s House …. So GOOD!!!!
You might enjoy listening to The Jaggerz - The Rapper from 1970
Enjoyed your video. Thanks
Guy's, Private Eye's was one of their absolute best. There is a girl you should listen to sometime , Angelina Jordan. She's been singing for 10 years now and recording. Her rendition of the Screamin J Hawkins song, I Put A Spell On You, at Age 9, will amaze you. If you are familiar with the song or not, this is something everyone should see at least once in their lifetime.
Great reaction gentlemen! Please check out the 1986 Daryl Hall solo hit - Dreamtime. Also John Oates sang on the 1986 Parachute Club hit - Love Is Fire.
I saw them in 1982 on the H20 tour. They sounded great and Daryl Hall played and danced the whole time. Great voice, great band.
Now do this from Live from Daryl's House with Cee Lo Green. Daryl Jall in middle age only gets better. 🇨🇦🥇👍💖
Hall and Oates did not have a bad song!
That's a great frickin song!! Great dance tune. 👍❤🤙
whatever ya'll do, do NOT watch Live From Daryls House! You will have a hard time getting out of there, is That good! You look and You decide. is incredible
I don't know ANYONE that doesn't like this song!
This reminds me when I was at secondary school (high school), I was 14 years old. Great memories!
❤
Simply Red sampled the music of this with his song "Sunrise". Maybe you all need to check it out.
I think D-Nice sampled this song, in his debut. My Name is D-Nice
Did they ever make a bad song...I think not. I was told once that this song is about their break up with their record company.
I love them. I think Adult Education is such an underrated song of theirs.
Agreed!
Daryl Hall doesn’t go into a lot of detail about it, but he does let it be known that he was really the main talent behind Hall and Oates. John Oates played a pretty minor role in their success according to him, and I tend to agree.
Hall n Oates is baaaad!!! Lotsa soul and funk. Excellent reaction!!!
They did a fantastic cover of Me and Mrs Jones.
And Mel & Tim's "Starting All Over Again"
Please take a look at some of the Daryl's House stuff. He has guests on that will give a new flavor to H&O songs!
My brother s music from the past is the best no auto tune crap like today
Speaking of “Wrap it up”. There’s a song by The Fabulous Thunderbirds by that same name. But an even better song by them is “Tuff Enuff”. You should check it out. ❤
"Wrap It Up" was an old Sam & Dave song they remade.
The music of my youth is amazing.
It’s called” blue eyed soul “ gentlemen
I love listening to people learn about different music. You guys are killing it. Thanks for the content.
"One On One" by H&O is my fave (arguably).
This was #1 on both the Billboard pop and R&B charts.
Those chart facts as Corey read about it being number one: it spent a week there, having ended Olivia Newton-John's Physical's 10-week run at number one.
I love the construction of
"I'll do anything,
do almost anything,
I can't go for that. no can do." Just getting less and less into it each time.
Man I miss this kind of music you have them and Huey Lewis And The News and on and on just really good stuff
Aww yeah 🤘🤘
Daryl Hall and CeeLo Green do this song together, jammin' at Daryl's House. Along with Crazy and One on One. They do not disappoint. Worth the watch.
Anything from Darryll's House!
If you notice this beat and bass is basically the same as Billie Jean by Micheal Jackson who told Daryll Hall that this song was the inspiration for it as it came out at the time he was writing Billie Jean.
The skating rink was LIT when this came on!! USA Skates in Wickliffe used to rock on Saturdays!!
?uestlove brought me back to loving them. They are the soundtrack between 1980-1985 3 - 7 yrs old.
Written by Sara Allen, Hall and Oates. The song was sampled by De La Soul, Simply Red, Andersen-Paak, others.
The late Michael Jackson told John Oates that he lifted the bassline for the sing Billie Jean. Hall and Oates said there was no copyright violation: they acknowledged that their song inspired the bassline for Billie Jean.
Great 👍 songs all through.
Suggested videos 📹: 1 Daryl Hall sings Dreamline 2 INXS and Daryl Hall perform Original Sin. 3 Icehouse and John Oates perform Electric Blue.
Fellas-a copyright free treasure trove awaits you in Live From Darryl’s House. It’s Darryl hall jamming with many great rock and soul artists. On this song: they jam it out with CeeLo! It’s sublime! They also do F*ck You with CeeLo. ❤
The song: Do What You Want, Be What You Are (1976) from the album Bigger Then Both Of Us
And they had some really great 80's hair😉
One of the best gigs I went to in Singapore was Hall And Oates - Acoustic Tour in Singapore in 1990 or 1991. I was only 18/19 then
This song is actually about the music industry.
I recommend the "Live from Daryl's House" channel. Some real gems there.
Lol Thinking Hall n Oates were black. I hope to find The Bee Gees and Bobby Caldwell in ur catalog. Hall n Oates..Bee Gees .. Two of my fav groups
They do a livw duet with Cee lo green. Omg broooo so much funk react. Plzzzzzzzzz. It's halls house cee lo green
I forgot about that from De La Soul!!! I love those guys.... RIP Plug Two
