I so enjoyed watching you react to our song! I appreciate you, brother 👊🏼 J.O.
Huge fan! Been listening to you guys since the 70's! I'm 58 now and raised 5 children, 2 girls and 3 boys on your music too ...all fans!!!!!! Thank you for your contribution to music!!! 💯💃🌹🎼🎵🎶🎹🎷🎺🎸🎻🎤📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀 So gifted with expression!!! Much love from Missouri!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I think it's pretty cool that an artist of your caliber would a.) Check out a reaction video to one of your songs and b.) Not try to copywrite strike it. I grew up to your music and already loved me some Hall & Oates but have now developed even more of a respect for you. Videos like this turn new people on to music and that should always be encouraged.
OMG !!!! Incredible!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
James Mitchell Totally agree. Love seeing this type of reaction video as seeing someone hear a song so many of us have loved for years and hold special is life affirming. The more people learn about these songs and love them too the better! John and Daryl are top men.
I grew up on this music.THANK god...how cool for you to react...LOVE FROM GEORGIA..♥️♥️
Man, do you even realize that the creator of this song commented? I've watched a lot of reaction videos and have never seen that. H&O were a huge part of my childhood in the 80s and it's great to see that they're humble, down-to-earth guys.
Omg right??!!! DUDE.
Daryl Hall can sing soul with the best of them. Like he said "Soul has no color".
Next recommended Hall &Oates song: “Sara Smile”
AMEN AMEN!!! SARA SMILE IS ONE OF MY TOP 10 SONGS IN THE WHOLE WORLD THAT I ADORE!!!!💗😁😍 AND I DON'T EVEN KNOW A " SARA"!!! BUT I HAVE TO LET IT BE KNOWN!!!! MY BOY "BRIAN MCKNIGHT" SANG "SARA SMILE"😁❤ AND IT WAS " OFF THE CHAIN"!!! THAT'S ACTUALLY THE ONE I LISTEN TO WHENEVER I WANT MY OLD SCHOOL FEELING OF " SARA SMILE!! IF YOU HAVE A MOMENT PLEASE CHECK IT AND I PROMISE YOU..YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!😀😁😍❤
Coming up!!
@@abovetheinfluence9361 I CAN'T WAIT!😀😁😍
Agreed
@@abovetheinfluence9361 Their cover of the Righteous Brothers song, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling", is truly a must!!... you'll love it!
Daryl Hall has a show called Live From Daryl's House, where he plays with other groups. In 2016, the O'Jays were on with him. In one of the pauses between songs, one member of the O'Jays said "Daryl got so much soul, he should have a afro".
That’s hilarious! 😂😂
And they definitely got the soul for sure!!!
@@abovetheinfluence9361 My very first concert was Hall and Oates at the Veteran's Memorial Arena in Binghamton, NY, in probably 1983. Everything they do is pure gold!
Daryl’s house is on the internet. He has had some of the best singers/musicians on it. They always seem to have a great time just performing hits and talking. Plus the great music is enhanced by a great “house band” that is along for the ride.
Yeah the session with the OJays is great stuff!!!!
@@abovetheinfluence9361 You GOTTA catch "Darryl's House" episode with Ceelo Green singing "I Can't Go For That". It's a Hall & Oates song but Ceelo KILLS it. And it's the funkiest cover on RUclips.

Hall and Oates grew up on Philadelphia soul. Their music reflects it beautifully.
Oh wow they’re from Philly?!
Philly has it's own distinct sound. Born & raised here. We are a very cool group of music loving people. 😎 Rock on Philly!! 🤓🇺🇸
@@abovetheinfluence9361 Temple U. = North Philly
As a 59 year old woman , these guys have always been favorite of mine and I appreciate them more over time .
I love Hall and Oates. They were huge in the 70s and 80s, especially in the black community. We loved that blue-eyed soul. If you haven't yet, respond to Sarah Smile, Rich Girl, Possession Obsession, I Can't Go For That, etc. Darryl, the blonde, did most of the lead singing but they both have beautiful voices! The had a band that backed them. Lots of horns on most of their songs as in most 70s and 80s soul music. Classic!
Daryl Hall is still rocking at 70 years old. Check out Live from Daryl's House. He jams with all the best artists.
"This is how it is." You summed it up perfectly. This is loss, longing, heartache and regret pressed to wax, and I've never found another song that so perfectly invokes these themes. Pour a drink, dim the lights and welcome the tears.
"I'm as worn as the toothbrush hanging in the stand." I was a kid in the 1970s, and I always thought they were saying "One less toothbrush hanging in the stand," which, when you think about it, fits the theme of "She's Gone."
And you got a shout-out from John Oates! How cool is that!
Yes it's just the two of them providing vocals. Obviously they dubbed in their own backing vocals so it sounds like more voices.
They capture perfectly that horrible feeling that there is now a void in your life that you can't see ever being filled ever again and the enormity of that feeling is all consuming. Art.
That's why I love this version over Tavares' version.
Indeed
This is the Philly soul sound. Use of lots of strings in the background part of the formula.
There was a whole bunch of years where you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting a Hall and Oates smash hit. Lots of great suggestions below.
😂😂😂😂😂 I love that expression.
Merroooow!🙀😆😆
“Modern Love” was a good one.🎶
This was popular in 1976 when I left my 1st husband and I used to cry with it alot, it is such a beautiful 😍 song 🎵 ❤
Also my friend, check out Ce Lo Green and Daryl sing, I can't go for that. They play it at Daryl's house. Badass!! Thanks George
4:49 Hall and Oates have that thing: Raw soul and talent. Arif Mardin produced their album this song was on in 1973, Abandoned Luncheonette. He would go on to also let the Brothers Gibb loose to explore their R&B roots when they did Mr. Natural and Main Course.
Its so cool that you got a comment from "John Oates Music"!!! I love Hall and Oates :)
Im over here 30 years old thinking man he does not know what he is in for. Masterpiece of a song.
You can do amazing vocal layering with just two voices with an analogue 24-track!! Love it!! And Aretha Franklin's producer, Arif Mardin, did a wonderful job on the orchestrations.
JUST Saw them last Night in Ft. Worth. Darrell is almost 75 years old and he killed it.
"Rich Girl" is a great Hall and Oates track, amongst many.
I for sure gotta give it a listen! Is that your fav track from them?
@@abovetheinfluence9361 Goodness, they had so many great songs.
@@abovetheinfluence9361 *Everything your heart desires* Please !
@@abovetheinfluence9361 Darryl Hall produced a TV show for cable years ago caked "live at Darryl's house " where he brought in fellow recording artists (usually music icons) like Cee Lo Green, Darius Rucker, Joe Walsh, Aaron Neville, Smokey Robinson... many many others... and basically spent a weekend just jamming, talking and eating.. they usually do a couple of the guests originals in Darryl's home studio with his top notch studio band and then they always do a couple of Darryl Hall's (Hall and Oates) tunes together... it's simply an awesome experience. Darryl Hall is, in my opinion, one of the most unmentioned and underappreciated living music icons around. he's super talented and oozing with soul.... Anyway, Sara Smile is notably one of the most critically acclaimed and fan loved songs in their extensive library. I have heard more than a few people refer to that song as the single best song they have ever heard... seriously.. I'm not of that opinion personally, lol, but i agree it is a masterful work of production art. thank you for your channel my good sir, newly subbed to you myself. although I'm not one who lists Hall and Oates in my personal top 10 bands... i never change the station or skip when one of their songs comes on! enjoy your journey
man. this takes me back to early 1980s. i was maybe 12 or something. moving my dad's stuff from california to texas, with his new boyfriend. even though there was a ton of fallout later, these Hall & Oates songs became iconic for us.
damn, i love your outtakes, too. so cool. thank you for those.
John Oates sing lead on this, so deep and smooth. Always gives me goosebumps
John sings lead on their cover of You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling.
Definitely worth a listen.
Love Hall and Oates. Grew up with this.. Definitely brings back memories.
What’s your favorite Hall & Oats tune? 🙌🏾
@@abovetheinfluence9361 She's gone.
I appreciate you 👊🏼
@@johnoatesmusic Thanke You!
@@abovetheinfluence9361 Maneater
When I think of Hall and Oates, I always think of the songs Private Eyes, No Can Do, Maneater, Kiss on My List, and others...
But She's Gone is a fantastic song.
The soundtrack of my youth
My favorite Hall & Oates song.
I was a kid when they came out and I liked them a lot but as an adult, I can really appreciate them on a different level.
released in 1973, they've been around for along time
Hall and Oates are perfection!
Super underrated soulful song by Hall and Oates is “Ennui on the mountain”!!
Definitely a rabbit hole you'll want to go all the way down. Can't go wrong with Hall & Oates.
Luv your reaction. They've been together 52 years. Number 1 selling Duo of all time. They write and produce their music. Two many hits to name. Check out live from daryls house,. He invites artists to jam. No rehearsal. Check out Daryl and ceelo green One on One. Thanks.
The thing about Daryl, and John. is that they grew up listening to all of those awesome Motown records. So their groves, soul etc is a product of that love for that old style of music. Think of that when listening to any of their hits, even this one. and it makes sense. The structure, harmonies, and the feel. go way from those years. But even with that I love that they took that ball of yester year, and ran with it, well.
Love how much you were able to appreciate this song! It's got the soul of some great '60s songs.
If you want a surprise listen to
Live From Daryl's House with Train, Poppa Was A Rolling Stone.
You will not be expecting it, but it is outstanding. I promise it will make up smile)
(Daryl's House is Daryl Hall)
You can feel the pain in this song. If you don’t have an emotional reaction to this song, you don’t have a pulse. Great reaction!
Sara Smile, Rich Girl, Maneater, I can't Go For That will be a good start!!
That’s just those two guys..yup 😉
Respect the sax! You’re on point!!
Gotta always respect the sax! 🎷 And their voices almost sound as full as a choir! 🙌🏾
The sax player is still with them.
@@abovetheinfluence9361 they multi tracked their voices.
Hall and Oates have sold an estimated 40 million records. They have had six No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100: "Rich Girl", "Kiss on My List", "Private Eyes", "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)", "Maneater", and "Out of Touch". Other Top 40 hits include "You Make My Dreams", "She's Gone", "Say It Isn't So" and "Sara Smile". In total, they had 34 chart hits on the US Billboard Hot 100, seven RIAA platinum albums, and six RIAA gold albums.[2] Billboard magazine named them the most successful duo of the rock era, surpassing Simon & Garfunkel and the Everly Brothers.
HALL & Oates. "SAY IT ISNT SO" So damn good.
Yup, two guys singing vocals and background tracks. And NO autotune.
They have a string of hits. You might consider checking out more of their songs like Sara.
Adding “Sara” as we speak! Thank you! 🙌🏾
Hall and Oats. Perfect example of a perfect 70s to 80s smooth transition.
It doesn't get much better that the sound of Philadelphia!
G.E. Smith on Sax another legend that you will see all over the place.
Nobody ever purposely listened to hall and Oates yet everybody knew all the songs and each and every lyric lol
You wanna be shocked react to Bobby Caldwell “What you won’t do for love “.... video
Tied with Robbie Dupree for "blackest name for a white guy ever"
Billy Preston & Syreeta, With You I’m Born Again. Ahhhhh. That’s such a beautiful song. Wishing on a Star, by Rose Royce. I typically only sing ballads when I sing karaoke, and those are two favorites.
One of the great breakup songs of all time. Those guys have so much talent. Classic Philadelphia sound, too.
The Band... “The Weight” at the Last Waltz concert.
The best time ( music ever) what rythme sound powerful unique one of a kind sound ever like the middle 60,s 70,s Music best
I never get tired of hearing this song, from it's release to date....
Proper music by proper musicians
Great reaction 😎
John's voice is so good, so good.
I remember when I first heard the silver album, his voice was it for me.
Daryl's is good too. 😊
Really need to dig past radio hits to early music, like Bigger Than Both of Us, Beauty on a Backstreet and even Along The Red Ledge and of course the silver album. Those albums are treasures
The ba d consists of some of the best musicians of the era. GE Smith lead guitar along with a couple others ran the Saturday night live band for a few years
The LEGENDARY Iconic Hall and Oates 💯💯💯💯💯
Philly Soul right there ... John Oats and Daryl Hall .... amazing !
Daryl Hall is a music genius! Daryl's house was fantastic!
The orchestra your hearing is mainly Daryl Hall on the keyboard...Charles DeChant is the sax player, John Oates played the guitar.
They are quite a force to be reckoned with.... your reaction was a pleasure
“Serious Music” from Along the Red Ledge, it’s another incredible song.
One of the best reactions I've seen to this, thank-you! As others have mentioned, it's definately worth some time to check out the jam sessions Daryl has at his house. It's laid back phenomenal. He invites a lot of top singers past and present and some that might not be household names but awesome nonetheless.
Hey man, first time watching you react and I loved it. I see your great appreciation for awesome music. I grew up with Hall & Oates and have always knew how great they are. Looking forward to watching more of your videos brother. I love all kinds of music but I am partial to any group with horns in it so I may make some suggestions for you to check out =)
I know this video was posted two months ago but I have to say...the new Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars collaboration “Leave the Door Open” and the album to come reminds me so much of Hall and Oates! I really hope Anderson and Bruno keep the Silk Sonic band going and it won’t be a one album type deal
Rich girl is another banger from Hall and Oates
Always a joy to see a happy first reaction to one of my old friends. Makes me feel like I’m hearing it for the first time all over again. (And for sure just those two guys.)
THANK YOU for reminding me through your fresh ears why this song is phenomenal. You picked up on important parts that get taken totally for granted. I like the way you hear.
Always helps to understand these guys if you imagine the song being sung by The Temptations or Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes
I've heard this song many, many times, but it wasn't until recently that I noticed that this song has a definite Marvin Gaye feel to it - especially the beginning. In some ways, I can almost hear him singing it. Hall and Oates were fantastic!
That smile on your face said it all.. great review.
Blue eye soul,I seen them live and are great.
They will always be legend !💕💕Thanks for the reaction💕💕
Great review. You know the music and production side, the vocal skills and how the song was constructed. Then you applied it to the common experience of all men. Well done.
I love their live version, too. :) Here's the link to the Rock n' Roll HOF performance from 2014,--they start with She's Gone, move to I Can't Go For That, and then end with You Make My Dreams Come True--ruclips.net/video/BykJC6B-LBY/видео.html This performance lifts me up when I've had a rough day/week/year like 2020.
Charles De Chant has played the sax for Hall and Oates since jump street
THAT"S MUSIC!!!!
I noticed you reacted to The Righteous Brothers' You've Lost That Loving Feeling, Hall and Oates did a very good cover of that song, you might want to check it out!
Reminds me of college and seeing them live in Bournemouth in 1976 magic blue eyed soul the best
What makes your reactions exceptional is your understand of music and composition.
Rich Girl is from that same era. I also love all the 80s hits too. "Can't Go For That"
My favorite H and O song; Sara Smile is a close second.
This song came out right when my first love left me for another dude.
This one , Sara Smile and Rich Girl are my top 3 from them but all of their songs are great!

Philly Soul with post disco era orchestration.
I love your appreciation for every detail of a song. You sound so knowledgeable I enjoy your comments.
My favorite Hall and Oates song.
This and "Sara Smile" are my too favorite ballads by them. Blue eyed soul at its best. Also try "I Can't Go For That", "One On One" and "Rich Girl".
"Sarah Smile" is another amazing piece by Hall & Oates.
Also, highly recommend checking out "I Can't Go For That" live at Daryl's House, with special guest Cee Lo Green. The jam is mind-blowing....
