  • Can't get a good metal tone? That was me before i asked John Browne to help me out and explain the basics of metal tone and now to dial in something that doesn't sound like a metal pedal from the 90s (my previous method)

    the part about picking hard is probably the best advise you can give on getting a good rock or metal tone. Ian Scott said the same thing about it being essential for proper rhythm guitar tone, learned it from Maclomn Young

    Basics of getting great tone out of an ENGL: Step 1. Turn on the amp..... there is no step 2

  • @magneto9210

    Can confirm, super dope metal tone achievable with a very similar setup, though I expect cheaper. Same amp head with the same settings, ENGL Fireball 25, but with the matching ENGL vintage 112 cab instead of what I assume was something different used here. Instead of the Archer pedal I've got a Tube Screamer Mini dialed in the exact same way, playing an Ibanez RG 7-string with Fishmans. Super badass sound even at low volume, it's become my new default.

    I've recently just found that on my Katana 50 MKII, the patches with the best Metal sound to me by far use either the Lead or the Brown channel with moderately low gain. Upping the gain just gets really ugly and overpowering fast. Liked seeing that I'm not far off judging by the knowledge shared here by John!

    As much of a cliche as it is, a hell of a lot of metal tone comes from the player, tight picking and muting technique is the difference between an ungodly cacophony of flubby unwanted noise and a crispy, punchy metal tone.

  • @springbloom5940
    @springbloom5940 2 года назад +1

    Guitar is a midrange instrument. Resist the impulse to fill in the bass, with your guitar tone. In a mix with other instruments, it turns to mud. But, mostly, you need to hear it across the room, because it will sound way different from sitting in front of it tweaking the knobs.

    When using a klon type pedal to boost a high gain tone, you should add a bit of gain in the pedal to tighten things up. With the gain at zero, the pedal will act almost as a pure volume boost, which essentially is the same as using high output pickups. It does saturate more, but it won't sound as tight.

    Sounds better without the pedal. Boost pedals make Engls fizz. They don't need more gain.

    That's pretty subjective. I use OD pedal as a boost sometimes but prefer a pure guitar-amp rig. It's a bit more loose sound. My head is VHT based and they are pretty dry themselves, extra definition is not needed. And yeah, hit those strings hard!

    i think thats complete bs . Chopping harder and turn down the gain ? lmao ......recipe is simple : downtuning + cranking up the gain , eq -> raise the bass , turn down the mids , raise the treble a bit and there you go = brutal metal sound . there are different metal genres and also different sounds and there is nothing more brutal than fuckin death metal \m/ .
