    It is incredible that a few ounces of mineral can be adapted by man to produce such power. Full size firemen may have had to shovel a ton or two of coal, but they moved a 200-ton train 300 miles. All from dead dinosaurs, and poorly miners

    If the track is slippy due to water just throw sand under the drive weels , modern locos have sand blasters on the drive weels to prevent wheels slipping on the first effort of traction .

    Sir, I am hoping that as you are of Foreign decent, that your use of an English word WAS a mistake. In the video the description came up PETROLEUM soaked Coal, you can not be serious, it is total madness to use petrol near a naked flame. If it was petrol, then you are lucky not to have been injured. Getting a flame anywhere near petrol fumes will cause a violent flashback. The safest thing for you to do in future is FIRSTLY get a blower. Next get some small wooden cubes of chipboard and soak them in Methylated Spirit. I keep on hand a jar always topped up with wood and spirit. Place a few pieces in the firebox and ignite them, as they get going, slowly add a few pieces of coal, once they are well alight, add more coal. I have used this method for many Years with out any problems.

    • @picrijogil
      @picrijogil  8 лет назад

      I'm sure you are aware of the difference between petrol and petroleum. I just discovered that petroleum describes crude oil in English - but I meant the light fuel oil or kerosene fraction, which i use in exactly the way you describe with meths. A somewhat cleaner version is sold as lamp oil.
      Petrol/gasoline is indeed not recommended ... but no worries, it is not what I used.
      Methylated spirits are alcohol - in my experience they flash off too easily, and depending on which alcohol you're using, can also be quite toxic. There' s a disadvantage to every advantage ...

    • @daveticehurst4191
      @daveticehurst4191 8 лет назад

      Thank you for clarifying what you said about Petrol. That is the trouble with different Countries calling things differently. You mention Kerosene, now here in England it is called Paraffin, Blue or Pink, depending on the manufacturer. Our club Locos used to be fired up with charcoal and paraffin, all to good effect. I opted for the Methylated Spirits, as after a run and good clean out, my loco was stored in the house Lounge, as there was nowhere else warm and dry to store it, so did not want the constant smell of Kerosene / Paraffin whilst watching TV etc. I also found that it was better to have the external 12 volt blower, running before applying a match, no blowback.

    Nice one. Is it not possible to raise steam with the gas but with the grate installed & a small bed of coal over the gas flame, to get everything going ?

    • @picrijogil
      @picrijogil  8 лет назад

      Well, the gas burner has the exact same form factor as the grate + ashpan, so no, that is not possible. I have since learned heat up the boiler to raise steam and then "assist" the coal a bit, all with a torch through the firebox door, and that seems to work quite well. Getting the burner out from under the loco, as you can see, is very fiddly.

      It's Train Fun a lot of if not all steam locomotives do it however some worse than others it’s because the cylinders try to move the body of the locomotive instead of the wheel, if you look at the GWR large prairies (I think it’s those at least) they do it too

      The full size one did that as well, up to a point that the crew would get decidedly sea-sick. The front springs get compressed by the vertical component of the force due to the inclined cylinders - I'd have to make the front springs harder to get rid of it. This is the reason why it was rebuilt after a year and the cylinders were placed much close to the hoirizontal.
