The amazing Blue Oyster Cult. Among the greatest hard rock bands ever, and terribly underrated over the years.
Buck Dharma is one of the most underrated guitar players of the classic rock era.
This song was in the animated film Heavy Metal. Anybody who hasn't seen it, check it out. It is a classic.

i vremember when i first heard this song in the early 80s, and thinking, when will this guitar solo,be recognized, as on of the best solo's ever? ....still waiting....so underrated its ridiculous...imo
This song was co written by science fiction/fantasy writer Michael Moorcock. He also co wrote Black Blade and The Great Sun Jester by Blue Oyster Cult.
Moorcock was an excellent sf/fantasy writer and his Elric series is legendary. He was also a devotee of the cosmic horror genre of HP Lovecraft.

LOVE the great sun jester. I broke the cassette and bought another. I broke several BOC cassettes in my walk-man.
I went to se BOC back in the 80's when this song first came out and it is still amazing. The music today can never compare to the music back then

I was lucky enough to open for Blue Oyster Cult at Jaxx in Springfield, VA in 2000 when I was in a Black Sabbath tribute band. Cool guys. They even came out of their dressing room to check us out.
Thanks, haven’t heard this version for a long time, forgot about the guitar solo. Eric Bloom is the singer here, he tended to sing their harder edged songs, Bloom is a science fiction buff and co-wrote this with sci-fi author Michael Moorcock.

I haven't heard this in forever. I remember being a kid and buying the album when it came out. It surprised me that the first song was classic BOC and then it was like listening to a different band. Great album.
I don't know. I can see it, given a chance but the album was similar to Cultasarous Erectus as Spectres was similar to Mirrors. I'm more if a Black and white first 3 guy, but all of them grow on you given a chance. Just glad he chose the live version of this tasty tune
Buck Dharma is one of the consistently most underrated lead guitarists of the heavy metal era. A great thing to know about him? He's still, over 70 years old, touring up and down the east coast with occasional inland venues to this very day. BOC might be underrated, but they have intense staying power.

Anyone else notice Buck's smug look as he steps out of the light at end of his solo? He knows he nailed it. The etl album version is this very performance.
This is a great song, this one and "Black Blade" were big on the radio back then, it seemed that "Black Blade" was played 2 times per hour some days.
well... it was about a demonic sentient blade that drank the souls of its victims, made it's master it's slave,and tormented him by killing his fiends and lovers and was co-written by Micheal Moorecock the creator of it's hapless anti-hero; Elric of melnibonea the doomed cosmic champion of chaos whom even death itself could not free from the endless cycles of war between law and chaos.
i like the parts being sang by stormbringer (the black blade) itself.

One of my sing-along favorites of my younger years. I still know all the words. Thanks for reacting to this one, especially the live version. Nobody ever dives deep into these guys and they have a fun catalogue and always put on a hell of a show.
You should check out their version of "Born To Be Wild" Live from the Black and Blue concert. I saw them do it at The Boston Garden.
The singer, Eric Bloom came out on stage riding a Harley! It was an incredible ending to the show. What a band!
I'm a huge Sabbath fan but I have to say that BOC blew the doors off Sabbath that night.
While this song is in the film _Heavy Metal_ , another fantastic BOC song intended for the film but not actually used is "Vengeance (The Pact)". That is a helluva banger.

Really, the entire _Heavy Metal_ soundtrack is worth discovering. An essential album of early 1980s Space Rock.

I heard a rumor that the wrote the whole Fire of Unknown Origin album for the Heavy Metal Soundtrack, but then the filmakers decided to just go with this one song. That whole album is amazing though, that and Cultasaurus Erectus were def soundtracks to my childhood and were perfect Sci-Fi hard rock albums. Black Blade and Monsters are 2 of my favs.
Not quite. The song "The Pact" was written for the movie but they couldn't use it because the lyrics were basically the plot, so they used Veteran instead. The lyrics of Veteran were written by legendary science fiction author Michael Moorcock, who collaborated with Eric Bloom on three songs (this was the last, there was one each on the previous two albums) and is stuff from one of his series of works.
Buck Dharma originally wrote "Burnin For You" for his solo album "Flat Out" but was persuaded to let them use it for Fire of Unknown Origin, it was their last big charting hit.

A lot of album was influenced by them writing for the soundtrack-- Sole Survivor, Heavy Metal: the black and silver, Vengeance and this one.

Nice that you give a shout out to drummer Rick Downey. He was the lighting technician on BOC tours and was pressed into filling in after BOC made the catastrophic decision to fire the soul of the band Albert Bouchard.

My favorite song by them is: Stairway To The Stars- great guitar solo. Also Hot Rails To Hell by them is a real rocker.

I saw them in 1981 in Rochester NY and managed to get right up to the stage. It was an amazing experience.

Man, Heavy Metal was a classic adult cartoon, released in 1981 and I was there opening night at the cinema!
You have to see that movie if you want to have your mind blown. The soundtrack was amazing, which I bought the next day on vinyl & still have.
Bands on that album ... Black Sabbath, Riggs, Trust, Don Felder, Sammy Hagar, BOC, Cheap trick, Devo, Donald Fagan, Nazareth, Stevie Nicks & Grand Funk Railroad.

This is one of BOC's live recording masterpieces. Astronomy from Some Enchanted Evening is another one. This version of "Veterans. . ." makes the studio version pale by comparison. The music follows the lyrics. It is an impression of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, everything from the dirge-like lead-in to the song to the despairing plea for mercy at the end. To me the guitar solo, which is for all intents and purposes, absent from the studio version (Yeah, there's a solo, but it's very brief, more like a bridge between verses), is the war going on in the psyche of the sufferer. It's a relentless bombardment on the soul, breaking everything down, rendering its victim vulnerable to complete and utter destruction. It's truly one of the most compelling offerings to Rock N' Roll. It goes deep into places most Rock n' Roll artists won't go.
You are going to view the greatest video! I promise. This performance is why I believe Buck Dharma is the greatest guitarist EVER!

I saw BOC when they were touring and promoting this album; Fire of Unknown Origin. It was the best concert for sound, lights and other effects. Great memories from 1981; I was in the 11th grade and paid $10.50 for my ticket. My concert t-shirt was $15.00.

This was one of the songs off the soundtrack to the movie "HEAVY METAL" . The movie was o.k. but the soundtrack was great. I definately recomend the soundtrack. The movie was a cartoon about an alien orb coming to earth that chose who could use its powers. Almost a cartoon porn. John Candy was the voice of one of the characters.

The lyrics of this song were written by a fantasy author many bands of this era loved - Micheal Moorecock. Check out their song - Black Blade - he wrote it also, its the story of his character Elric. Elric was pretty much the first fantasy anti-hero - a lot of the Witcher comes from it.
The lyrics were by Michael Moorcock and Eric Bloom (the vocalist).
It is about veterans and PTSD. Pay attention to the lyrics.

Saw BOC in 1979 and maybe 1981. The first was at a huge open-air day-long festival in San Diego, with Robin Trower, Cheap Trick and others. The second was from the nosebleed seats at the indoor livestock arena in Fresno. Psychedelic experiences for me. But jeez, those guys were riDICulously loud! Shee-ut.
