    METALNROCKNROLL4EVA IS BACK BABY!
Blue Öyster Cult performs "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" live at the Hollywood Sportatorium in Hollywood, Florida on October 9, 1981. One of the highlights of this performance is Buck Dharma's guitar solo, one of the greatest he's ever performed!
I spent hours digitally restoring the audio and video from this rare performance just for you guys!
I obtained a decent quality bootleg video source and a high quality master audio source, matched them up in my editing software, and touched up the video quite a bit. Definitely not perfect but it's the best looking this performance will ever look, guaranteed! Nothing but quality from metalnrocknroll4eva \w/

Just one big point, Buck Dharma has a connection with that guitar (in a different style) comparable to that of David Gilmour in his ability to capture your soul and send it soaring somewhere.

Essentially it's Erekose lamenting his fate before the events of Quest for Tanelorn.

FANTASTIC! Magnifique! POWERFUL! Blue Oyster Cult! Way underrated band. Trippy and at times heavy as f**k. People always mention Black Sabbath, old school Aerosmith, Pentagram, and stuff like that when talking about the heavier school of 70's-80's hard rock. Blue Oyster Cult is that hidden gem that you need to discover on your own.

What the song is really about :
Michael Moorcock With Blue Öyster Cult
''Moorcock wrote the lyrics to three album tracks by the American band Blue Öyster Cult: "Black Blade", referring to the sword Stormbringer in the Elric books, "Veteran of the Psychic Wars",
showing us Elric's emotions at a critical point of his story (this song
may also refer to the "Warriors at the Edge of Time", which figure
heavily in Moorcock's novels about John Daker; at one point his novel The Dragon in the Sword they call themselves the "veterans of a thousand psychic wars"), and "The Great Sun Jester",
about his friend, the poet Bill Butler, who died of a drug overdose.
Moorcock has performed live with BÖC (in 1987 at the Atlanta, GA Dragon Con Convention).''

This is a perfect example why Buck Dharma is my favorite guitarist. What a great solo. I saw them do this live in Long Island when this album came out (as Soft White Underbelly) and this video doesn't show it but they had two guys they called the funky monks in hooded robes on either side of the stage playing the kettle drums for those real chunky drum sounds. It was also right after they fired the original (and greatest IMO) drummer and they hired their road manager for drums. He was very good but they were never the same after that.

  •  10 дней назад +1

I saw them around 15 years ago in a small bar in Concord Ca. It held maybe 100 people. They listed the show as 'Soft White Underbelly". BOC liked to use that name for small venues. There were 3 of the original band members and they used a young drummer. They played this song last and I couldn't hear until the following morning. Shedmen.

    •  10 дней назад +1

The amps were far to big for such a small, rectangular room. It reminded me of The Cow Palace when we saw Z Z Top and Ted Nugent. Dusty Hill and Billy Gibbons each had 4 foot wide and 6 foot tall amplifiers stacked in two rows of four.

I saw them once on New Years Eve back in the 70's. They were at the Cow Palace in Oakland. At midnight a 40' Godzilla came out, bright red eyes, they sang Godzilla. Then I lucked out in 1990, they played at a bar near me. They were billed as "Soft White Underbelly". Maybe 50 people at the bar. Couldn't hear for 2 days. Shedmen56

Very astute comments about PTSD, I also think this song is about that, with a Sci/fi spin.
At the time this was written, late ‘70’s, we were just starting to comprehend the problems many Vietnam vets were going through. I don’t think the syndrome was even called PTSD yet. But this is a very powerful song, lyrically and musically, and totally relevant to it’s time.

This song showcases the ability of guitarists of that time to be able to actually craft a solo, instead of just shedding a solo and blowing their wad every time, these guys took the song into consideration, they developed a solo that fit musically & spiritually into the song which in my opinion takes a lot more skill than just speed riffing every time.

If you want a true venture into their stage presence, try listening to "Then came the last days of may" from their Long Day's Night Concert from 2002 in Chicago on the Summer Solstice. Guitar Magic. I saw them 3 years ago and met Buck Dharma. He is the most down to earth musicians I have ever met. Kind human, great guy. A national treasure. These guys are still great in concert. A must see live.

The solo on that night's version of TCTLDOM is absolutely blistering. Just when you think it's amazing that anyone can play so accurately at that speed, they crank it up again. And he makes it look so easy. Buck Dharma is a guitar god.

One of the best versions of this great song (the solo is killer as it's not in the original studio album version of the track). I also came across Blue Öyster Cult via the 'Heavy Metal' animated movie which came out in 1981, but when I first saw it, it was about 1991. I thought it was a great film with an equally awesome soundtrack (that is unless you detest rock and metal).

This song was co-written by Don "Buck Dharma" Roeser and English author Michael Moorcock. It was an extension of Moorcock's ELRIC novels. It was actually composed for and used in the 1981 animated feature film HEAVY METAL. It was not intended as a commentary of the inability of the non-Veteran to comprehend or understand the problems of the Veteran, though it can be used as such, due to the nature of the lyrics being so other-worldly and graphic. Trust me, being a Veteran gives me a certain draw to this song.
