We lost one of the greatest guitarists of this era in Criss Oliva. RIP Criss.
Yes you are right Criss Oliva is with out a doubt one of the greatest guitar players ever that is why I love this band so much been listening to Savatage from the start and still do R.I.P Criss
🎸 🌹
Criss was as good as anyone...Marty Freidman, Becker, Yngwie, etc...etc. I look at vids now and its so apparent how gifted he was. No wonder Mustaine wanted him to join Megadeth.
The lead singer, Jon Oliva is also the pianist. He went on to form Trans Siberian Orchestra. Savatage were a criminally underrated band. They have several piano based songs in their catalogue: "When The Crowds Are Gone", "Edge of Thorns", "All That I Bleed", "Stay With Me Awhile", "Chance", "Alone You Breathe", "Labyrinths", "Anymore", "The Storm", "The Hourglass", "Welcome", Back to a Reason", and many more.
This is why I kept suggesting Savatage to them Jon and Criss are great musicians
I think I heard Jon can't read music. Plays by memory.
❤
When the Crowds are Gone is my favorite song on this album. I want it played at my funeral…
Savatage are prob my favourite band from the 80s ,hall of the mountain King is one of the greatest albums ever written
Thank you guys so much for doing this and thanks for the shout out I was on the edge of my seat watching this one I'm glad you liked it next how about Hall of the mountain King it's a lot heavier and I think it's their best one
Great pick, Alyssa! My favorite is Warriors off of Power of the Night. It's heavy AF
@@rockerfella8122 yes Warriors is a great song I've been listening to Savatage since The Dungeons are Calling they were definitely alot heavier on their earlyer albums I always thought that they were one of the most underrated bands of all time Criss Oliva was an amazing guitar player Hall of the mountain King is my favorite song by them
@@alyssahudson1743 In sure they would've made a bigger splash if Criss wouldn't have passed but the music scene was starting to change too. Thankful that the guys react to bands like this that made a huge impression on us. Take care!
Will do! Thanks!
Great suggestion. Remember buying this album on South Street in Philly, on a field trip way back when
The narrowest line imaginable between Genius and Madness is drawn between the right and left brain halves of Jon Oliva
He's the best at crowd interaction too. I CANT FUCKING HEAR YOU!
Well said!
Savatage or Trans Siberian Orchestra , makes the top of my list every time , Phenomenal!!! Lots of Piano Playing in Savatage Jud ! When the Crowds are Gone is a must listen to!!!
Was a fan of Savatage since about 85 but never saw them live but have seen TSO 4 times. Get a chance to see them it's a must!!
When the Crowds are Gone is one of the best songs to come out of the 80's
Savatage was one of my favorite bands. I use to drive by their old neighborhood on my delivery route in Florida back in the day. This picture disc is actually on my turntable . LOL
🤘🤘🤘
This is my favorite Savatage album.
The first metal band i ever heard , it changed my life.
Yes me too the first time I heard them one of the most underrated bands ever great music
Savatage were my first ever live, me and my friend had no voice left at the end of the show from all the singing and yelling. Great times, great song.
Their song Chance - super underrated :)
Savatage great power /Symphonic metal inspired to "opera" musical and classical music. For me the masterpiece is Gutter Ballet , street a rock opera and Awake the Magellan.
I love Savatage so much. And they're such a singular band. There's prog metal and power metal and symphonic metal, etc, but Savatage has always been in some other category. And I kind of attribute that to Jon Oliva. Paul O'Neill had an important part in the band's evolution, but I've always felt it was Jon's voice (literally and figuratively) that defined the band.
I listened to a relatively recent interview with Jon Oliva, and it kind of hurts. There could be more Savatage in the future, but Jon has experienced so much death and loss over the years, and I think it's adding up. Then again, he writes some of the most heart-breaking and beautiful music I've ever heard. I want more Savatage, but not at the cost of Jon Oliva's well-being.
Very grand. Another new band introduced to my consciousness via you guys. Classic patented Judson-ear-hands too.
We’re going to look into trade marking that phrase. 😂
@Greatmeasures1 you could do branded earmuffs with gloves hanging from them.
@@bumblefluff79 😂😂 That’s perfect!
I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this song (and album)!!!! So musical and brilliant. That low D at the end to the fade......
Wow I hadn’t heard this song sense high school. Thanks to whoever requested it.
Oh wow, I can't believe I missed that until now, one of my favorite 80s songs ever. Such a great song.
LOL, this makes me wonder what they would think of Symphony X or even Dream Theater's "Pull me under". Good stuff, I loved it!
Symphony X - The Odyssey !!!
Michael Romeo is one of my influences but before him it was Chris Olivia and Rocky George
This is great song, but the best one is "when the crowds are gone"
Boy it's been a long time since I heard this one! I remember exactly where I was when I heard the first Savatage song. I thought who in the world is this and why haven't I heard of these guys! Seriously underrated!
Savatage, you two are stepping out of the normal reaction path. That´s good. This album has fine cover art, I have this as an LP somewhere in the attic, back in the days I admired it a lot. Good tune from a great band, Jon Oliva has one of those voices you instantly recognize, when you hear it. My favorite album from Savatage is without a doubt Hall Of The Mountain King, which is incredible from the first song to the last.
This album and Streets are the BEST!!!
I had never heard of Savatage. I flipped on Headbanger's Ball one night and caught the last half of this song. I was immediately hooked. I went to the mall and picked up the cassette the next day. They have been my favorite metal band ever since.
Thank you for doing these reactions guys.
Oh lord....Savatage! You should really have him do a reaction to the song "The Hourglass" from the Wake of Magellan album. That chorus at the end is insane!
My favorite album from the Sav.
Oh yesss
Impressive!! Great guys! Thank you.
Saw Savatage at the Roxy in ATL opening for Testament on the Practice What You Preach tour ( be a good reaction 😉 ) in 1990. Nuclear Assault was 2nd band..Two night show. I still have a flyer! Keep the metal coming dudes!! 🤘
Definitely do the track “Chance” from this band. That’s a great one.
Holy Cow! You pulled this one out of your hat! Great band and song, saw them back in the day in Tampa. Another great one is JAGUAR GOD - MASTODON....
I was so excited to see someone do Savatage!! My dad introduced me (his favorite band) and they hold a special place in my heart. Definitely recommend checking out more of their stuff.
Y'all should also check out Tardigrade Inferno, especially "Clockwork God" or for something more silly, try out "Execution is Fun" or "We Are Number One".
Such a shame Kriss was killed. Streets a rock opera was gaining ground. Kriss was such an amazing talent. He would of been mentioned with the greats. I still remember coming home from school, turning on mtv, it was MTV news announcing Kriss was killed by a drunk driver.
Great stuff guys i am a fan of the both of you.. please continue to comment on more heavy rock/ metal music🤘🤘
Love you guys...
Please check out "When The Crowds Are Gone" by Savatage. (Same album)
Criss was such a talented guitarist, one of the absolute best of all time RIP🤘
Love the channel. The more I watch, the more I think this exploration of heavy music isn't complete without a few looks at Woods of Ypres and the late David Gold. It's hard to categorize, but obviously they were listening to anything from 2nd wave black metal, doom, and 70/80s progressive rock groups. I'd suggest starting off with "I was Buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery" or "Traveling Alone". David Gold really excelled at making beautiful, sad and emotionally complicated music, and was taken too young.
Second that. Ypres was truly unique in their sound as well as lyrics.
I suggest you guys do some Ozzy earlier stuff with Randy Rhoads on the guitars.Keep doing it,love the channel!
Smooth. I dig them.
Still my favorite concert to this day was Savatage co-headlining with Trouble at Janus Landing in St. Pete, Florida in 1990.
With out a doubt the first time I saw Savatage was in my hometown arena the bill was Savatage, Megadeth, and Dio was the best show I ever seen the only other one that's at the same level is when I saw Metallica open with Ozzy on their Master of Puppets tour
Amazing. I am locked in with you guys subconsciously. Something told me to check RUclips to see if you guys posted a new video yet and, low and behold, 10 minutes posted ago... insta thumb up and insta comment. Love you guys
P.s. Trioscapes - Blastoff
I literally just discovered your channel, and I love it! Can you do The Void Alone by Fallujah?!
Band that had so much promise before Jon decided to leave the band. And after Criss death they were done even when Jon came back to the band. Brothers were what made this band special, Jon´s vocals and Criss´s riffs❣
YES, FINALLY!! Thanks for doing this!
This was a great track
i am waiting for queensrÿche.. operation mindcrime or empire...please 🙏
Judson makes it look so easy on the piano... lol
A friend gave me a CD that had dozens of bands on it. I was clicking through random songs & found Savatage... probably the best thing that could've happened to me.
Such a great band. I'm kinda angry that they didn't get the fame they deserve.
I like their later, more progressive albums too, but for me the highlight of the Savatage discography will always be 'Hall of the Mountain King'; one of the best US power metal albums ever made.. 😎🤘
They literally don't write them like that any more and what a damn shame! That was epic!! I couldn't help but hear a heavy Iron Maiden influence musically, but that might just be me 😂
Greatest Savatage song/solo there ever was....
Niiice! Some savatage.
You should check out the songs morphine child and Chance. Those ones are right up jedson's (spelling ?) alley.
The song "surrender" has one of my favorite keyboard solos despite it being simple
Ok to hear people actually give a honest opinion. Not just a rah rah. I love them but not for everyone.
The best song on this album is Summers Rain.
Summers Rain solo is iconic. RIP Criss Oliva.
Sirens
great album I bought that and the dungeons are calling around the same time my favorite albums are probably power of the night and Hall of the mountain King one of the most underrated bands of all time
I want that Hall & Oates shirt, dude!! :D
Please more Savatage songs reactions!!!! The Chance, Edge of thorns, Believe, Prelude to madness/Hall of the mountain king, The Hourglass, Mozart and madness..... How many beautiful pieces of music to react to 🤘🏻
The face says it all... Not impressed by the keys but totally respects Criss Oliva's guitar work.
14:22 euphemism?
Also, Hall & Oates? Your band shirt collection is more eclectic than i thought😂
😂😂 I love Hall and Oates!
@@Greatmeasures I don’t doubt it, 80s boy😂 They do have some great tunes! Just good to see you sporting something other than carnage, murder and whatever-ectomy once in a while, that’s gotta feel like a big ol’ hug.
Some of the riffs on this song sound very reminiscent of a certain Iron Maiden song.
"Euphamism"
Would you be able to leave the sound of Judson playing the piano in when he's trying to figure out the notes/ key? I think it would be cool to hear him nail it as the song is going on.
Parts of the music make me think of eye of the tiger/rocky type stuff. One riff sounds almost identical to Maidens Hallowed be thy name. Decent song.
Holy shit. You all said the same.
Jon Oliva is Eddie.
Hey guys! A new subscriber, long time lurker here. I really appreciate your content. I wanted to drop a request, I don't know if you do those but I thought I'd try my luck. I hope you could react to Insomnium - While We Sleep (official video). Insomnium in my opinion one of the best melodeath bands out there, just not very well known to the wider audience. Their music is what I would describe as brutally beautiful. I thought you both might enjoy it. To be honest all of their songs are good, but that one has a nice music video too.
Thanks for the sub! I’ll add this song to the list. To be fully transparent, the list is lengthy but you have my word that we’ll get to it in due time.
Fantastic, thank you!
your channel logo is amazing
Thank you!
Saw them in 1990
They opened for a double show
With Great White & Winger
And they stole the show
Local Tampa Bay band outta Tampa & St Petersburg,FL
I prefer 'Tonight He Grins Again'
Try Psychotic Waltz - I remember!!!
One of the most criminally underrated bands ever... 👌
@cbn6635 100%!!! They're amazing. A social grace will forever be in my top 10 albums
@@falseprophetband An excellent debut ideed.. 👍...but I think 'Into the Everflow' is possibly even better.. 🤔🤗
@cbn6635 Yeah, it's a great album, I love "Little people" or the title track, but I'm personally biased by "I remember" and "Strange" haha.
@@falseprophetband I though 'Mosquito' sounded a little too 'grungy' to be up to par with the first two albums, but 'Bleeding' was a return to form.. I sadly haven't really heard their latest comeback album though...
Yeah they had the hair, but i wouldn't classify them as "hair metal", which i don't consider a genre anyway, it's just rock and roll man.
Judson always makes me laugh, haha. Don't change, guys. ❤
I love this channel.
Actually, I don't comment too much in YT except with you.
And please, Death - "Crystal Mountain" and if you want to do more Heavy/Power try with "Highlander" by Lost Horizon or "Keeper of the Seven Keys" by Helloween.
Thank you! We should be uploading Flesh and The Power it Holds within the next few days. I’ll make sure Crystal Mountain gets done as well.
Avatar (pre-Savatage), "Livin' On The Edge of Time"

Yes this was the start of Savatage and one of the greatest bands ever
Fleshgod apocalypse - Epilogue. It has to be done. He will love fleshgod. Either Epilogue or Sugar. They have a pianist he'll enjoy
Savatage!!! No band like them!! Ever
This album scared me when it was released after reading the reviews. Savatage took a left turn into orchestra land.
I didn't like it.
I was much more into albums like Power Of The Knight, Sirens, and Hall Of The Mountain King.
This softened Savatage for me.
But it's not bad, just not for me.
But my fancy piano playing jacket is black velvet 🤘😈
WOuld you do some Dio?
Pretty good album for the period. Not so many bands at the time incorporated so much piano and orchestra. Jon Oliva’s voice was/is divisive. Other songs are probably better to react to, like anything from Wake of Magellan, with the subsequent vocalist.
I agree Wake of Magellan is a great album I've been listening to Savatage since their first album The Dungeons are Calling, Hall of the mountain King is one of my favorites Streets is insane as well the song Jesus Saves has amazing guitar work Criss Oliva was one of the greatest guitar players ever
In case i missed that, when will your logo appear on a t-shirt? ....and don't forget about Helmet, i will repeat this, even if you start to call me Cato (Carthaginem delendam esse...)
Not sure about shirts yet. We’re gathering info on that now. I haven’t forgotten about Helmet.
Please react to Equilibrium - Kurzes Epos!
Anyone. Else hear EYE OF TIGER in the guitar riff ?...😂...lov the shirt richard..i deff need that ..i was reading it and then it hit my brain..hall and oats 😯 the Metallica demon is eating poor ol oats... Well he is only the second fiddle in the band..so hall and oats band will live on 🤘🤘🤘😈...😂
REACT TO DEATH PLEASE
Please react to Babymetal next! I recommend the songs Monochrome and Road of Resistance! :))
or would you punish Judson with some Lorna Shore haha
They did Lorna Shore already at some point.
Rain - Sleep Token, plis
Probably the most underrated metal band ever.
The lady with short gray hair (the composer) is obnoxious.
Now that’s funny!
You guys are the opposite of morning coffee. Omg this is boring.
Your piano is out of tune which makes it sound like an old western saloon.
