Criss Olivia, the guitarist,
Was on his way to a show
With his girlfriend, when
A drunk driver took them
Out in a head on collision.
Criss was on his way
To be one of the premier
Guitarist’s of the 1980s.
RIP Criss❤️🎸🇺🇸
Man, I forgot about Criss. That was a loss! :(
You know before he passed he was asked by Dave Mustaine to join Megadeth. After he refused the offer Dave hired Marty Friedman.
OLIVA
He was with his wife, not girlfriend, named Dawn, and she survived the crash.
Savatage. The most underrated band ever
Handful of Rain is my fav.
@@g.w.2793 Over 60 songs are on my favorites list on spotify. Hard to choose the best one 😉
The Gutter Ballet album from them is a must. Epic!
Welcome to the genius of Criss Oliva! Check out When The Crowds Are Gone for his most emotional guitar solo !!!
Savatage! One of my all time favorite bands. We lost Chris way too young 😢. As for touring except a couple of shows they did 2 years ago. And also 9 years ago. They haven't toured regularly since 2002. Jon Olivia has said that they will be releasing a new album this spring. The first since 2001 but again will only be doing a couple of festival shows in Europe. Thankfully I had the pleasure of seeing them. back in the 80's.
Steve "Doctor Hardware Killdrums" Wacholz on drums. Known for hitting the drums very hard.
Check out I Believe from their first album Sirens. Solo after solo by Criss Oliva.
Savatage originally started out as Avatar but changed their name to Savatage because of another band with the same name
I live in FL and I saw these guys play many times in Tampa. They were great. Even played with another local FL band named Nasty Savage. Great times.
When the Crowds are Gone will blow your mind
I saw this tour in a small club called Dallas City Limits, Trouble opened on their S/T tour.
Tso plays Savatage in there on cores and they're amazing shows you really need to check out
I highly recommend you check out Savatage's Gutter Ballet and When the Crowds are Gone. Those both have "official Videos"
On a different note....has anyone realized just how many amazing albums were released 40 years ago in 1984?! Guitar World has evidently released a piece on it and on Eddie Trunk's daily radio show on SiriusXM he's been taking people's top 5 albums that came out in '84! Some really really great stuff was released that year! 🤘🏼💙
It was an increase up to 1986. 1986 was the epitome year of metal.
I was 12 when this came out. 49 now. STILL get the same feeling listening to it. It warms my metalheart to see the music of then beeing enjoyed as i still do to this day. Thanx!
You bet!
Loved Savatage back in the day, just blown away to find out they transformed into TSO
I absolutely loved your reaction to all this info you had no idea about. Still giggling - and I’m there with you on your flummoxing 😜
Steve's nickname is Dr. Killdrums
This band is excellent! I've never heard a bad song from them
Metal Church: Metal Church🤘🥁🤘
YES!!! SAVATAGE!!!
NWOBHM.. New Wave Of British Heavy Metal.. ie Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Samson, Saxox, Diamond Head, etc) Again check out Gutter Ballet and When the Crowds are Gone. Doc Wacholz hard hitting incredible drummer. Got the nickname Doc cause he was constantly having to work on and repair his kit after shows cause he hit so hard. He also used 3S drumsticks. Criss the guitarist is one of my biggest influences on my own playing, Tage were way ahead of their time musically. Criss started the band when he was 14. with his older brother Jon (the singer/keyboard player) Criss was a true virtuoso.. As you've read in other comments I'm sure he was killed by a drunk driver, his wife Dawn ( who was his "girl" since middle school) survived, sadly she passed away in 05. Jon said Dawn never fully recovered and struggled everyday after losing Criss. Very sad story.. Criss never got to see what Savatage went on to become with TSO and all the success that came with it.
Super wicked solos loved listening to this album growing up.
Headphones make everything better 😂
I have a feeling I just released Savatage on New Zealand haha you’ll show two friend, and they’ll show two friends and so on… and so on…
Wait til you hear Metal Church! Not quite as epic in scale but one of the greatest riffs, primarily due to how its played.
Its truly amazing how one can follow influences back through musical time. Every extraordinary musician was influenced by someone or something. Realistically, we are influenced by EVERYTHING… either to do (or emulate) something, or to think “yeahhh, no, not gonna do that”.
Speaking of influence, having heard Holst’s Mars again, Im wondering if its actually Maurice Ravel who was influenced by Holst, and used HIS 1-4-4-10 rhythm and compose over that. By 1-4-4-10 I mean that famous da-dadadada-dadadada-dadadadadadadadadada. Solid probability.
The influence of Classical music on modern music is FAR more vast than we can know. Same for Jazz.
Thanks again Andrew! Always enjoy your reactions. :)
OH, BTW, almost forgot…. NWOBHM… the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal… Very similar to the Seattle scene, in that NWOBHM is a blanket term covering bands of a wide variety of styles and sounds, who, from the mid-70s through the early-to-mid-80s, made a newer blend of Metal. Bands included Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Motorhead, Saxon, Diamondhead, Venom, Tygers Of Pan Tang, Raven, Holocaust. NWOBHM took the existing standards, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Judas Priest, as well as American Metal bands, sprinkled in some punk aesthetics and values, and created the sounds that were a direct influence on a variety of styles, primarily Extreme styles including Thrash Metal, Death Metal, Black Metal, etc.
And yes, they still play Hall Of The Mountain King as Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Its AMAZING!
PS for another mind-blower, check out Ravel’s Bolero, from (I think) the 1930s. The rhythm of that song is EVERYWHERE in modern music.
Inspector Gadget theme song as well if anyone else remembers that show
Lol yes! Inspector Gadget theme is definitely based on Mars.
Sabbath of the 80s... i used to hang out with John before shows. Great guy, great voice. He plays a lot of instruments. Chris is the most UNDERRATED guitarist ever... Saw them many many times... Best at L'mours Brooklyn, NY!!! HOTMK Tour.
*New Wave Of British Heavy Metal.
-Iron Maiden, Diamondhead, motörhead, Def Leppard, Judas Priest etc.
Def Leppard is hard rock
DAMN GOOD SONG.. this and Gutter Ballet
Still rocking that T-shirt Andrew. Looks even better faded.
Yeah, they're riffing off Am I Evil by Diamond Head at the beginning, and so by extension, Mars by Gustav Holst. Then it's an improv based on some Edvard Grieg. \m/
When I hear adaptations of classical pieces in contemporary music I think of Emerson, Lake and Palmers version of "Pictures at an exhibition" by Mussorgsky. Good shit
Great shirt Andrew!
Has anyone else ever wondered if the music company intentionally put Ozzy on the cover of Vol4 with his arms in a V and 4 fingers or is it just a coincidence?
Great album but Sabotage and Never Say Die were my favorites.
I love the Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow version of this
New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM)
You know.. maiden, Saxon, Leppard, tygers of Pan Tang, etc
Kinda shocked he didn’t already know this.
I mean, Savatage was influenced by those acts but they’re from Florida lol
@@Wyl7especially wearing a Sabbath shirt lol but whatever 🤷😂
@@PaulThoresenAlso Angel Witch, Diamond Head, Blitzkrieg, Venom, Demon, Satan and Merciful Fate. If anything, they was a few years before metal became mainstream in 1983. But the ones you mentioned was more of the famous nwobhm.
New Wave of British Heavy Metal NWOBHM
🤯
Love your videos, if I can make a suggestion, go find the documentary series called
"metal headbangers journey" by Sam Dunn. This would help to fill in some of your gaps on the genres and subgenres of the music. Especially '80s Metal 🙂
This was my favorite band since 1989... Then I found Babymetal two years ago. There are rumblings of a possible NEW Savatage album in the near future.
"How have I never heard this?" is exactly what I said when I heard this. And repeated many more times. "Edge of Thorns" is great. The drum parts on "Of Rage and War" might be more interesting. I think they used drum machines at some point.
I'll check out more :)
They record drums with electronic drums so is confusing with using drum machine.
Savatage rules!!!
Gutter Ballet was criss olivas finest solo abd epic performance! You HAVE to react to this song!
Ah I love me some savatage. Back when I was in school, I had a very cool musical education teacher who started a unit (several weeks long unit) on popular music by playing "Edge of Thorns" by Savatage, partially because he liked it, and partially because me and about 2 to 4 other kids in class were into metal and rock. Was a fun year, he also was my guitar coach for a time and tought me what little I know of drumming, too.
I can really recommend you listen to more of their songs, there are a few bangers. However, off the top of my head I can't think of any that are particularly "drum-interesting", if you know what I mean, so maybe others will make these recommendations?
Anyhoo, you know the drill: Whenever I comment (which is less than I should, mea culpa!) I need to repeat my request for Dimmu Borgir - The Chosen Legacy (Studio Version). No context for this, you'll understand why I need you to listen to this when you get to a point in the song.
Also, cheers to NZ from northern Germany. A friend of mine lives in NZ and recently got married, so my thoughts are halfway across the world in your neighbourhood somewhere. :D
Prelude to madness is really where you start to hear the roots of Trans-Siberian Orchestra begin. Still baffles me that this band, or at least a good chunk of it, is played worldwide every single Christmas, and yet their early works go so unnoticed.
savatage ,awesome
check out live videos with the doc
on drums 👍👏
Have you been hiding under a rock? New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWoBHM)! Seriously, one of the best bands that mixes Classical and Metal. Their music became even more complex and layered after this album. IMHO, their best albums are Dead Winter Dead and The Wake of Magellan, both concept albums. You need to listen to more of them.
Are you related to “The Misenden Flyer” ? He’s a motorcycle vlogger .i swear you could be brothers,he’s amazing too.
Andrew Rooney Drums you shuld be interested with this stuff. -----Hauntologist "Deathdreamer" Drum playthrough by Darkside
Maybe try Bonfire - Tonmeister for some drum comments.
Inspired by Peter and the Wolf
I am surprised that no one has asked for Charlie Benante from Anthrax (and current Pantera Tours) yet. Due is a monster and should probably get more credit (or blame depending) on inventing Blast beats. Oh, and since I mentioned Pantera is Vinnie Paul coming anytime soon? Charlie Benante has done a great Demo/.interview deal over at your beloved Drumeo.
Actually I requested SOD Milk and someone else beat me to requesting Charlie as well, though Im blanking on which track …
Charlie did not invent blast beats. They were used in jazz probably as far as 1950s or even earlier. Examples are on YT.
Dr. Killdrums!!!!
Might have bought the album for this song. Mostly regret, but not complete.
Wait? Is this Metal Church?
I completely forgot about this song. It doesn't sound as good as I remember. The washed out 80s metal sound is unfortunate. I'm sure a remastered version would be much better.
It could stand a remix with more defined instruments … one MUST be careful doing so, though. Too often they ruin it.
US Power Metal. Omen, Tyrant(Usa), Armored Saint, Laaz Rockit, Savataje.......
US Power Metal
🤘
someone needs a metal history lesson
Thats what we’re doing lol
