This candidates tournament is a great show of the mental fortitude required to perform at the very top consistently. We have been spoiled by Magnus who makes it look so easy. Pragg and Gukesh seem impressive but consistency is yet to be seen.
Alireza is among 14 chess players in chess history who have surpassed a 2800 rating, achieving this milestone at just 18 years old. He is certainly experiencing a challenging phase in his career (and possibly in personal life) and seems to be demotivated. I hope that with the right motivation, he will make a strong comeback.
@@jestice75 In fairness, having a few weaker players in the mix helps to get more decisive results. Once a few players score wins against the weaker players, the others are incentivized to play decisive, aggressive games to catch up.
He's the new Wei Yi. Another player with promise that had holes in his game. Kramnik was right. What did say. He's a great player, but his chess understanding needs work.
Look carefully at how Alireza surpassed the 2800 rating. He always defeated players in the 2500/2600 rating range, rarely in the low 2700. I thought this was to take Alireza out of his prep, and Fabis intention to queenside castle and prepare a kingside attack against the Sicilian, having the R on g2 to support a possible pawn storm.

Maybe it's just me but it seems Alireza has been on a steady decline since Magnus said he would only play the WC if Alireza was the candidate. After watching the interview with Hamidreza it seems like maybe he is the problem.

Dear Alireza, you were not supposed to play in this Candidates tournament. You didn't make it in, but neither was anyone forcing you to. You could've sat this one out, taken a nice holiday and come back stronger for the next one. Perhaps like Nodirbek, many might even be calling you one of the favourites for the next title. But no, you decided to squeeze your way in with some controversial last minute tournaments. Fine, you got in, but now when things aren't going your way, you start whining about not wanting to play chess anymore. (Which, by the way, no one is forcing you to do either. You could simply enjoy doing your fashion design anytime.) Yes perhaps you could blame it on the arbiters giving you trouble at the wrong time during the game, but let's be honest, your tournament wasn't exactly going spectacularly anyway. If you don't have a Champion's mindset, don't expect to deserve the title.
When Magnus said he will play the WCC match if Alireza wins, it means just as much as him saying he will play if I win, since it's the same either way xD
