This year in the candidates the ruy Lopez seems popular (with the white bishop on b5), while in other years and other tournaments different ideas are 'coming into vogue,' and everyone wants to try them out. I don't really know why this happens (or if it really happens at all - I could be seeing something that's not there). It looks like Agadmator will be getting up and going to bed at odd hours for the next two weeks. That's what happens if you live in Croatia covering a tournament in Canada.

Somebody should have sponsored him a ticket to Toronto to cover it right from there. He's far and wide the most entertaining chess channel for us lowly Elo chess hobbyist spectators.

Magnus already said it “Nepo is the most talenteded player alive” not only that, when asked Magnus also said that Nepo is the one who is the most genius or has that genius aura. The problem with Nepo is his anxiety of playing fast sometimes without thinking and his emotional state. He reminds a little bit of Magnus back in the day when he gets pissed off and also a little bit of Hikaru saying “Idgaf”, but man, you have to care. Maybe thats why Magnus is WC and neither Nepo nor Hikaru are Champions. But for sure Nepo is the great monster of chess nowadays.

Hikaru against Magnus, Alireza against Ian, and they BOTH use a surprise d5 in the opening? I reckon they must have planned this.

Don’t worry Agad, we are honoured to host the candidates this year but Toronto is the entire country’s favourite punching bag. They’re like the 3rd cousin in the family that you don’t want to spend time with but will always fight for. Welcome to Canadian time
