Hi Rob, I made one of these and LOVE IT. I also made a matching pad for under my sewing machine for tools (Jenny Doan's tutuorial). Here are a couple of things I added to this pin cushion and thread catcher. 1) I sewed a rectangle approximately 3" x 4" in half and turned it inside out. Then I sewed the top of the rectangle to the tab between the pin cushion and the bag to make a flap of material so that I had a place for needles. Since needles don't have any tops like pins, they tended to disappear into the pincushion. 2) I slid a 16 oz solo cup into the bag to make it easier to empty the thread and fabric scraps. 3) I didn't have boning and had thrown all of the strapping from mailed packages away (ugh) so I cut up a gallon milk gallon into strips and it has worked well in place of the boning!. When I make the next one, 1) I am planning to put the walnut shells into a muslin bag and then into the pincushion sleeve because with a light colored fabric, the moving the pins in and out of the walnut shells discolored the pin cushion over time and 2) I will add a rectangle of plastic shelf liner to the bottom of the pin cushion or if I make a sewing machine pad with it, I'll add a little velcro to the bottom of the pin cushion and the sewing machine mat so that the pin cushion doesn't slide off the table.
Nancy Powell , just the comment I needed to see! I was wondering how to make it so that it wouldn't slide off of the table I was thinking maybe some sort of non-skid material like is used in slippers?), and the idea for needles is awesome! Thanks for posting.
You are such a great inspiration! I have an 11 year old grandson who loves to sew. I’m going to introduce him to your channel, he’ll love watching you as do I.
Teaching my 8 year old granddaughter to sew this summer...this is definitely on the list! She will be thrilled! AND ..I think my mother will LOVE the one I'll be making her for Mothers Day. AND, of course I'll be making one for myself as well. Thank you Rob!!!!!
You are one of the the best sewing instructor I have seen. I would have placed the walnuts into a separate pillow and then placed it into the pin cushion.
Thank you so much for the tutorial. I was gifted about 100 pre-cut and pre-embroidered pin cushion when I bought some embroidery threads from an elderly lady 2 years ago. As I did not know how to sew one up and could not find an easy tutorial online, it was stuck in drawer for 2 years. Yesterday I decided to get serious and search some more on RUclips and found your one. So grateful, because I can eventually start sewing them to be in time for my Christmas market table in the mall. You are awesome!
Rob! I'm Mrs Brown, loved your video, made three. I kept going back and forth with the video as I sewed till the first one was done. Away I went, found out my husbands crushed walnut shells he uses for cleaning the brass on his reloading, worked great for the pincushion. Thanks for your videos . Luv them!
Rob, I love watching your videos. High energy, fresh ideas, and I love that you use simple everyday items (straps for boning). Repurposing is a GREAT thing. You can also insert 2 door hinges into the pin cushion before adding shells. It is added weight and lays flat. Sewing in a magnet on the top side of the pin cushion will be a great and convenient place for thread snips. I love someone's idea of the rubber shelf liner to prevent slipping. The possibilities are endless. Here is an out-of-the-box idea, using heavier "man" material, the pincushion instead is left open on both ends to slide a belt through. Attach to your belt when fishing. The catcher can hold worms either in a plastic bag or the plastic container the come in and outside pockets can hold a small folding knife (for cutting the fishing line) and anything else you want at your side so you don't have to go in the tackle box every time.
Wow, that's a great idea soul60s3. I am planning out my tackle pouch even as I type. Thanks for the idea!! Here's an idea in turn: I bought a pack of mechanics gizmos at Walmart. There is a magnetic bowl, magnetic telescoping wand and my favorite, a grab-it wand that is about 2ft long. When I need to turn right sides out, I stick the grabber into the opening and push the button and a claw grabs and holds the fabric that needs to come back through the opening. Speeds up the process and then I used the telescoping wand to push corners out.
Everyone needs one of these in their sewing studio. Easy to make and so great to have on hand for anyone who likes to sew! It's this weeks' brand new tutorial: a Weighted Pincushion and Scrap Bag!
I made one a few years ago with no filler and just pinned it to a chair next to me as I sewed on the breakfast table,,, I now sew on a plastic table in another room and cut off the filler portion of the catcher and sewed two 1" Velcro hooks across the hinge portion with two 1" Velcro loops pieces attached to table top using Command Strips under each piece ,, this holds really good and I just carefully peal off catcher to empty it,,, I also saw that using a shiny fabric like rayon or nylon for the liner keeps thread from sticking to inside of bag for easier emptying,,,
I did not mention that I worked for almost 40 years as a Brick/Block mason and took to sewing in 2014 after double knee replacement,,, I was always a producer and took up sewing to keep my creativity alive,,,
Rob,thanks for the great tutorial! Something else you can use in place of boning, is the straps used to bind lumber. It works great, easy to come by, hardware stores just throw it out & are generally willing to let you take as much as you'd like. Bonus - albeit very little less trash in the landfill. Keep us the great work! You are very much appreciated & loved.
Rob, These bags are great and practical. I agree, we all need several. It might be helpful to use your free arm feature of your machine while stitching the casing for the boning. Absolutely love your teaching style!
I made one just like this but a much longer "hinge" and heavy pellets in the pincushion and gave it to my dad to use as a remote control holder!!! The hinge lies on the arm of his recliner with the weight resting on the inside of the chair, about where the cushion and the side meet. The bag rests along side with a few remotes in it. Perfect.
i made a couple of these and i didn't have any boning. So i used a couple of long Zip-ties with the knoby-clicky things cut off. It worked really well. : )
brilliant~ I was just sitting here watching this video tutorial and scanning my craft room trying to figure out what to use for boning. I am trying to use what I have... that is a REAL challenge! LOL
Wow thanks for that idea! I usually save the plastic strapping from pls, cases of paper boxes, it I am up here in Idaho for quarantine at my cabin and have none but yes have zip ties!
Excellent tutorial! It included all the materials needed with correct dimensions and very clear instructions. It took me less than an hour to make mine. In lieu of walnut shells, I used red lentils for the pin cushion (it's what I had in my cupboard). Thanks, Rob, for a great tutorial! I'll be making more of these as gifts for my crafty friends.
Made 2 of these yesterday. one for me . one for my daughter, that i teaching how to quilt. She loves it. She is making the present quilt that Jenny has tutorial on. Thanks, Rob keep the tutorial coming,
I just made the trash bin. I love it and plan on making one for my daughter and grandson and with your idea I plan to fill it with notions and stuff, my husband wants one for his work bench so when he is working with screws and stuff he can drop them in there while he is working and will not lose the screws and nuts and with the weight it will not fall off his bench. great idea, thanks.
Hey Rob! Your instructions are the quickest, easiest way I've seen to make one of these! I bought a pattern and made 2 for me & my MIL but they took forever. I need to make a few more so I don't have to carry them around the house. I'm definitely using this video for that. I bought a new washing machine a couple of years ago and asked for the strapping around the box. The guy looked at me like I was crazy but I have yards and yards of the stuff to make these now. Thanks for the video and your shirt is awesome!
I am a blind man sewer who does not let my blindness stop me doign things. I like how Rob gives teh measurements and I can get the cutting right and how much I need to leave and where to sew. Tahnk you rob. I also have a man sewing t shirt as well.
Hi James! That is incredible! I am so happy to hear you are enjoying the Man Sewing tutorials! I am very inspired by your story, and hope you have fun creating projects from these tutorials! :)
For small items like this you can also cut boning from used round plastic food containers like butter, sour cream, etc. Works great. If you need a longer piece, just cut in a spiral.
I made many of these and used the plastic weed wacker cord for the top of the bags. It was super easy and it holds the top of the bag open due to its pre rounded shape
Great informative video with lots of humour! Thank you for taking the time to explain the step-by-step process. I usually watch a video and then turn on Closed Captioning so I can take a few notes along the way and you are one of the very few people who provide clear and concise Closed Captioning. A lot of people use the CC option only to realize its a bunch of mumble jumble. You've got a new subscriber!
Love this tutorial! I have made several of these weighted pin cushions with scrap bag attached as little gifts for family and friends who think they are great! It's fun to mix and match various fabric designs and colors, plus it's a good way to use up smaller, leftover pieces. By the way, I enjoy all of Rob at Man Sewing videos. Rob gets to the point and explains and shows each step clearly. Also, it is clear that he loves his craft and genuinely enjoys teaching. Great work Rob!!!
It took me awhile, but I finally made the Weighted Pin Cushion. I really like it and want to thank you for your up beat attitude. It is really enjoyable to watch your tutorials. Thank you.
I have a pincushion scrap holder which I bought and I was so delighted when I discovered your tutorial. My friends are all getting them for Christmas. Thank you
I made one today! My first big project, total newbie..i didnt have boning so i had a clear cutting mat from dollar tree, it worked so great! I feel accomplished!!
Watched several videos and decided on yours. Being a rather occasional sewer, I was sure I would give up after trying to make the boxed corners. Thanks to your style of explaining, I was able to make six thread catchers. Thank you! 😊
Found your videos today while researching how to make my own scrap bag. What a fun and informative video! I didn't have any boning on hand but I found a metal hoop I had intended to use for another mobile I want to make. A hacksaw made quick work of opening one end and I slid it in to the top hem of the bag. Thanks for the tip on crushed walnut shells as they are actually good to keep your pins sharp! You are a neat host and I look forward to more vids!
So glad I found this tutorial. I have wanted a thread catcher for the longest time and couldn't find the pattern. Found you and wow now I have one. Thanks Rob!
This is my most recent favorite. I've been watching Man Sewing tutorials and Missouri Star Quilt Company tutorials on my lunch break while walking on the treadmill at work. They are the perfect length to get one or two turorials in during my half hour walk and makes the time go faster. I can't wait to make the weighted pin cushion with scrap bag to help keep my sewing area tidy.
I like it when the scrap bag is connected to the pincushion tab with hook & loop tape or a large snap. So I don't shake out the pins from the pincushion when I shake out the scraps. Nice video!
Hello. Thank you for this project. I teach very basic beginner sewing workshops and this is the quickest way I have found to make these scrap bags. Looking forward to showing my students how this is done. Thanks again.
I finally took the plunge and I made one of these using some scrap fabric. Its my first "real" project and I am really proud of myself. Your tutorials are so easy to follow and informative along the way. Thank you Man Sewing!
I watched this at the treadmill on mute at the gym - was able to follow everything even without sound! Came to book mark it, wil definitely be making this. Thankyou.
Hello Rob, I am newish to quilting. I just watched the tutorial on the sewing machine pad with pockets that Jenny Doan of Missouri Star Quilting Company made and I am thinking this would be cool to attach to the pad itself with a pin cushion scrap bag combo off the side of it over by the right side of the machine. Looking around for other innovations to add to the sewing machine pad. I need to remember to leave room for the function of the machine and for me! Thanks for your enthusiastic caffeine driven tutorial! This one made lining a bag look easy. Thank you. Man Sewing is something most women, I think, would like to see more of.
Attaching to the sewing pad underneathe machine--THAT also answers the question I had of making sure my pincushion bag etc would not fall off... THANKS!!!
Hi Rob. I made this and it was so easy and fun that I made a bunch more as gifts for my sisters and mom for different purposes. I took your suggestion about the pockets and embellishments and now I have these all over the house. In the living room for when I am hand sewing/quilting/watching tv (it holds my remotes in pockets on the outside, in my sewing room, machine, cutting table, ironing station. Thanks so much for this tutorial
Greetings from Puerto Rico! I want to thank you for your very simple way of explaining sewing work. I was breaking my head watching videos to make a bag pick up threads and pin cushion, until I found you! Great, I could do it in a two by three, but with my personal touch ..! Thanks and success.🥰🤗
I bought one of these years ago from our local guild and I love it! 💕 So now I'll be able to make some for all my friends and family who've been wanting one. Thanks Rob!
Just came across your video for the first time. Love it. You have explained things so easily. I ordered a completed Pincushion/scrap bag offline. Never again. I will most definitely give this a try. It looks fun and easy. Thank you.
Made one for me and one for my aunt. The boning strap I got from a recent shipment of boxes to a local business in the area. Total random score on a craft supply! Awesome tutorial
Thank you so much Rob, I really really enjoyed watching you creating this amazing trash bag and pin cushion. I’m definitely going to try this out. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
Great tutorial. I made one a few years back and connected two tabs to the bag with buttons. That way I can unbutton the bag from the pincushion and dump it out.
I had gotten directions from a different company while I was reading it some of it didn't make sense to me so my daughter told me to search RUclips. I found you and by far your voice is easy to listen to and follow along with the things that you are saying and doing to the pieces. I ended up making the bag with the pink cushion by your RUclips video and it turned out great. thank you for helping me learn how to make it. Mary Slone.
This was so easy to make. Thank you! I made 2...but I used rice as I didn't have any walnut shells and it worked wonderfully. I use this every day I sew. Again...great instructions...thanks!!!
I have wanted to make one of these for a long time too, but I was fortunate to have a friend make one for me. But, I thought since I have that one by my sewing machine, it would be nice to have one on the ironing board as well. So, now I can make one. I really didn't have a clue where to start. Your tutorial is excellent. I also want to make the charging station. You are the coolest (well next to Jenny anyway).
Janice Ideus I needed a reason to make a new one! The ironing board, of course!!! :) Thanks for the great idea! Thanks for watching the tutorials as well! :)
I'm going to make a tv/dvd remote bag for my husband...you wouldn't have to make it much bigger if at all and everything would be at his side on his chair arm. I'm excited to try this. Thank you Rob Appell my Man Sewing Man....
This is a great idea and will be very useful for my daughter, mother and I. I can not wait to make us some. Thanks for a great video and very well explained. I enjoy watching many of your videos. Thanks again.
Havent seen you before.but i will definately.be keeping an eye out for your next project.so you are so good at explaining things.i have learnt so much.thankyou.
That's Awesome! It's a well-done, informative, easy to follow tutorial especially for a beginner. It's doesn't hurt that I happen to love a man that's not afraid to sew, cook, or do anything else that would typically be called woman's work. That's what sealed the deal when my boyfriend asked me to marry him! That was over 25 years ago and he still does "women's crafts" when he's not at work as a hydraulic mechanic. 😊
Hi Rob, thanks for this tutorial. Tip that I use, is rip stop for the lining. Then my threads and trash don’t stick to the lining. Plus, my husband gave me some really big zip ties that I use for the boning. I have given them as gifts, they are awesome for my sewing friends.
I made this bag along with the Rob’s tutorial and it was AWESOME! I didn’t have any boning and I didn’t feel like going out and getting any so I used a a very stiff fusible interfacing and that worked out good enough until I pick up some boning because I will definitely be making more of these! Rob, you are the best!!!
I just made one of these with a pattern kit oh boy wish I had watched this first because your method makes things easier and is certainly less confusing, Mine included a ceramic tile that is covered with fabric and you Velcro the pin cushion to it ( for extra weight). Thanks for an easier softer way and all the comments are so helpful as well.
Just finished 2 of these and almost finished with the last one. My sisters and I are going to each make a Cross wall quilt and just wanted to treat them with these awesome thread catcher/pin cushions. Thanks so much Rob, love learning from you!!! 💚
Hi Rob, it’s Tina again and just wanted to let you know that I’m making a whole bunch of these beauties again and just to reach out and thank you once again for great tutorial! 💚
The cheapest place to get crushed walnut shells is in a pet store. They are used at the bottom of some cages. They are available online under pet supplies, also.
Thank you for your comment. I went and bought a bag of ground walnut shells from PetSmart, 10 pounds cost less than buying one of these pin cushions in the the store.
Great tutorial! Thank you! I have written directions a friend gave me but could never figure them out. :) Found you through Missouri Star Quilt Company -- both of you are great!
Bought something like this from a fellow sewer a few years ago and she used a tile at the top for weight and the pin cushion is attached with Velcro--to make it mobile and she lined the bag with vinyl to make it easier to empty but these are great to have. Easy to tuck into sewing bag to take with you.
Love Man Sewing, you Rock. Note: you can make another hinge that is put on the bag separate from the hinge on the pincushion; put Velcro on each hinge, or 2 buttons on one and accompanying buttonholes on the other, so the bag and pin cushion can separate when you empty the bag.
I have made two of these. One sits by my machine and one sits by my daughter's machine. I did as you suggested and added a spot for her to put her scissors.
I've made several and "stuffed" the pin cushion with sand. It was a bear to get the funnel gap sewed. On one when I had no boning, I used the rim of a cottage cheese carton lid. Someone had to be pretty special for me to make this though. I've bartered by exchanging sewing favors for them though. You are delightful.
Made two in the last couple of days - one for a friend and because it went so well, one for me! Thanks Rob. Edited to add for the pincushion I'm using ground corncob husks just in case people are allergic to nuts - as I intend to make a few more! And now my husband wants one to use (not sure what for, but I expect he'll find something!).
That's so awesome, Kerry! That's a great idea to sub out the crushed walnut shells for corncobs. I'm sure your husband will find his weighted pincushion very handy!
I love this so much and missed a class on this at my local guild but your video is so terrific I made myself one and another as a gift for my daughter in law. I added loops on hers and a magnet to hold a small scissors Great job
Just finished two! One thing that I did differently was when connecting the two bags. I marked with a frixon pen the inch all the way around. It was easy to slide around the free arm and sew around that way.
When I was making this (it turned out great!) the local JoAnn and Michaels did not have boning. So, I took one of our plastic chopping mat and cut a 1/2" strip. Now, next time I'm at the Dollar store I'm going to get a few plastic mats so I can make these for my sewing friends and family! Thanks for the great tutorial 🙂
I bought ome of these at a craft show in Kalamazoo, Mi. in May and just loved it. My 89 YO mother had a trash bag by her recliner and I ended uo giving it to her to use instead. Now I can make myself one! I think hers has sand in the 'pin cushion' part.At least it felt like it.Thanks for an informative and not scary video! I think I can, I think I can!!
Thanks for the video. My friends say, "oh, it's easy. Here's the pattern", but a visual is a million times better for me.
Nicky Vincent I so agree, about needing a visual! I'm the same way!

Where can you purchase the PLASTIC shelf liner at? All I find is the more like cloth one. (not sure what its called).
I used silica sand for fill. This was put into an inside bag then slid into the cover bag. It also keeps my straight pins sharp.
Love the recycle of the milk jugs .So useful. Thanks!

Old denim pants would work great to create your fishing container. Thank you for the idea.
You can use iron on clear vinyl on your inner lining fabric to make it “water resistant” for your bait and easy to wipe off with Lysol wipes.
Everyone needs one of these in their sewing studio. Easy to make and so great to have on hand for anyone who likes to sew! It's this weeks' brand new tutorial: a Weighted Pincushion and Scrap Bag!

Used your video to make three of these. So easy to follow. Still need to work at getting the boning to look better.
Thank you.
You known what I liked ,was you are making a scrap and throwing the scrap on the floor.thanks for showing how to do it.
Thanks Rob!
I'm so glad you found this tutorial, these are fun to make! Enjoy!
Man Sewing he
This is my most recent favorite.
A friend just said she wanted one of these!
I bought one at a silent auction fundraiser and love it!
So i have tried this amd mine came out perfect. I used a wire strap to keep the shape and i used rice as weight and they worked. Thanks again!
Thankyou.
Awesome, Tracy! Glad you enjoyed the tutorial! Have fun creating your Weighted Pin Cushion!
THANKS!!!
Thank you for the hint about over lapping the boning. ❤
I made one and I don't know how I ever lived without one before!! Thanks Rob!
Thanks Rob!
Excellent video tutorial!! Have made these in the past but following this resulted in my best one yet!
Just came across your video for the first time. Love it. You have explained things so easily. I ordered a completed Pincushion/scrap bag offline. Never again. I will most definitely give this a try. It looks fun and easy. Thank you.
+Sunnie Underwood thanks for watching!! You'll have to send in pictures of the bag you make! :)
I just Googled this idea and found one with a detachable basket, a nice touch that I will add to the one I am going to make!
Joyce Hill sweet!! Be sure and send us pics so we can better visualize it! We would love to explore our options with this pattern!
Man Sewing I'm not sure how to post a picture.
You can share one with us on Facebook or Mansewing.com!
I've been looking for just the right pattern for a little bag and pincushion, I finally found one. My sewing room floor will love it!
clear chopping mats from the Dollar Tree, cut into 3/4” strips works great instead of boning material.
Buttermilk Bay Soap fantastic idea!
Wow great idea I have an old one I'm going to use right now.. thank you for that tip!
Thanks for the great tip.
Mary Slone.
Thank you so much for all the love and support. I am thrilled that you found our tutorial useful and beneficial. Thank you for your comment!
Just watched this again. I love your old set behind you
I'm going to make a tv/dvd remote bag for my husband...you wouldn't have to make it much bigger if at all and everything would be at his side on his chair arm. I'm excited to try this. Thank you Rob Appell my Man Sewing Man....
I like the way you make it easy to understand. We all need these.
This is a great idea and will be very useful for my daughter, mother and I. I can not wait to make us some. Thanks for a great video and very well explained. I enjoy watching many of your videos. Thanks again.
I'm so happy you enjoyed the tutorial, Dixie! I hope you have fun making the weighted pin cushions! Thanks for tuning in!
Havent seen you before.but i will definately.be keeping an eye out for your next project.so you are so good at explaining things.i have learnt so much.thankyou.
You made this look so easy. Thank you!!! Can't wait to get some boning and walnut shells so I can make a few for my sewing room and my friends.
I have given them as gifts, they are awesome for my sewing friends.
hard to pick just one video I personally find I learn something new from all the video He is a great teacher
Your tutorials are so informative and fun! You break down each step clearly and with lots of enthusiasm! claudia
+Claudia Allan Thanks for the awesome comment! Glad that you're liking the tutorials!
Thank you very much.
cute little pin cushion and scrap bag combo. adorable
What a great teacher I am so pleased with my pin cushion scrap bag!
Glad you enjoyed the tutorial, Linda! Thanks for tuning in!
Just finished 2 of these and almost finished with the last one. My sisters and I are going to each make a Cross wall quilt and just wanted to treat them with these awesome thread catcher/pin cushions. Thanks so much Rob, love learning from you!!! 💚
Thanks for the great instructions. I just finished making one of these bags.
+Jeffrey Rich I'll have to check it out!
Jeffrey Rich thank you! I was wondering about that, eating walnuts are expensive!
Thank you for your comment. I went and bought a bag of ground walnut shells from PetSmart, 10 pounds cost less than buying one of these pin cushions in the the store.
Thank you. I had no clue where one would get walnut shells.
Great idea, Brenda! Thanks for watching!
This was my 1st video tutorial by Rob. I am hooked!
I have made one of these. I used all my scrap fabric. I was really pleased do did another for my mum too
You are just something else and very special to me, great tutorial Rob and I love your "Man Trash" 😂💚
I really love your video.sewing the edges down first is my way to go.sawing time, l loved
I made my first one. So happy with the results. Thank you for your fine video.
I love this so much and missed a class on this at my local guild but your video is so terrific I made myself one and another as a gift for my daughter in law. I added loops on hers and a magnet to hold a small scissors Great job
How did you attach the magnet?
You made it look easier than I thought it would be. Thanks
Great tutorial!! Love the boning at the top to keep the bag open!!
Just finished two! One thing that I did differently was when connecting the two bags. I marked with a frixon pen the inch all the way around. It was easy to slide around the free arm and sew around that way.
Katrina Hough sweet! Love all the great ideas I've gotten in the comments!
Katrina Hough cool tip! Thanks for sharing! !
I made these for all my sewing buddies for Christmas. They were a huge hit and they fold easily for storage as my "sewing room" is portable.
Thank you for all of your tutorials . You've been extremely helpful with all of your videos .
Rozikess awesome!!! That's what we like to hear! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for your instructions, so precise. Your video is easier to follow.
I have one with a cup holder - so nifty! Use it all the time. Love your tutorials, thanks.
You just gave me an idea.. make these for the car!!!
Wow I’ve never seen this. My vacuum will appreciate this. 🥰
