This is the first thing I ever quilted. 8 yrs later and I’m back to make one of these for a friend who just bought her first sewing machine. Thanks Jenny!
Whwn I made my pad, I used clear plastic, folded the top down my 6 inches to form the pocket and still be able to see what;s inside, when I folded the vinyl in half, I stitched a clear tubing across the top to stabilize the top. I used oxygen tubing. I stitctched below the tubing. Just for fun, I sandwiched a few M&Ms inside the fold "just for emergency" and a decoration! Then divided into pockets at each end, using a double seam about 1/4 inch apart for security, one was wider to hold a pen. I left a large pocket in front to catch threads, etc or to store items that needed to be laying down. On another pad Imade, I sewed 2 loops one on each end. I put a dowel through the loops. I wind my binding material around a toilet paper roll, slip it over the dowel and my folded binding unrolls as I sew it on and doesn't get out of control for me!
What I love about this tutorial is first it’s simplicity. And adaptability! I have a large machine and want to cover the table top! In addition, I used a tape measure across in front of the machine, sewed it on. And an exterior pocket for my cellphone. To keep the pens and ripper, I attached an elastic above the pockets. The pockets hold the brushes, and other things for the machine. Thank you for the tutorial .
Jenny, I have to say, you still have the best, easiest and cutest tutorials on the web. I searched ALL the videos for a sewing machine mat and yours was the best...and the one I chose to make. It has all the same attributes as all the others (old and new) but is the simplest to make. Why everyone else has to add so many extra steps and complicate things, I will never know. Thanks so much!
I totally agree with you! I am in the process of making one right now. I have put it off as I didn't want something complicated but this is soooo easy!
I made two but only used one in my sewing room soooo, I have the second one on my bed between the mattress and box spring. I keep a small flashlight, cough drops, and heartburn pills in the pockets. Love it. Now my hubby wants one on his side of the bed.
I made this mat right away two years ago and added a pincushion with ribbon and a button so I can take it off. I roll it up for carrying to sew with friends, and it's wonderful for all my stuff!! Now I am teaching my 10 yr old grand daughter to sew, and we are making one for her lovely new machine. Thanks again for my gift Jenny! X
Thank you Jenny. I am new to quilting (been sewing for 50 years) and your videos made it possible for me to make quilts for my two grandsons this year. I also made matching pillow cases using your tutorial and embroidered their names on the cuff with my sewing machine. I so enjoyed the process that I know I will continue to quilt...most likely watching your videos.
+Sue Merrell that is so great!! I am so glad that the tutorials have been so helpful to you! It is so wonderful to be able to make something so precious for somebody that you love...priceless! :)
Am going to make one for my stepdaughter for her journalling and business creations. She doesn't sew, but pretty sure this will come in handy for her organizing tablet - with pockets for her pens and different colored markers, etc. TY
THANK YOU, Jenny!! This tutorial on " The Gifted Sewing Machine Pad" is awesome, because you made it so clear how customize- able it is! I have not yet started my sew as you go quilt as I had hit a rough patch, and now I see why universe stopped me from starting with it. I want to make this pad first so things are super organized before I start, that way perhaps I will not be "pulling out frustrated "with myself and can "Jenny talk" myself through things better.I love the calmness surrounding you, even with the excited giggles with walking us through every blessed step, thank you so much. You are amazing, and the foundation of your company's transformation of a town, shows the power of love, how it shows up in so many ways that we least expect when we follow our passions and then share our gifts with the world. KUDOS!! I hear an angel team wildly cheering you on, whistles and air pumps and maybe even some jumping up and down... "Way to go JENNY and family and company!! WOOHOOOO,even. :)" and no, I am not exaggerating.Thank you so much for sharing your passion in quilting and bringing love to the world. :) The machine pad, by the way is a doorway to other projects, such as "protect the table" pads for hot stuff. A quick story: My father and his wife burned a lovely wooden table, accidentally. She had made a pie for a family dinner, a labor of love, beautiful and delicious. Something happened, and she had to set the pie down quick, an asthma attack or something I don't remember the exact cause, and didn't get back to it. The beautiful oak table top, from then on, was covered with a tablecloth. Just imagine if instead of hot pads to bring it to the table she had a lovely pie pad to place it on and carry it in that way. Cool idea for another project or two. This is also how you could start a beautiful quilted carry all with pockets on a walker, or a stroller, for people who need that. Hmmm on the side of a wheel chair, oh both sides.. with strong hook and loop so the pockets could be remove-able but the arms of the wheelchair still have the quilted cover-- that idea needs to be fine tuned. Ah, but that is how it goes: creativity shows up and hopefully you write it down to be able get back to the good ideas that pop up, when your mind is busy doing other things, in the moment. Life goes on so persistently and daily, it is so nice to have these tutorials to come to, that spark new ideas. I think I may be hooked. LOL. Thanks again, Jenny Doan! Bless you.
My daughter and I made this today but altered it a bit .... Made it longer and added ties to double as a machine cover for her new machine I gave her for Christmas... Thank you for the inspiration and love all of your videos and hope to com to MSQC someday.
Oh! Jenny, you are a legend. Thank you for sharing your "brainstorming " with us all, quilters and sewers. Love your calm aura and your "snowballing it" 👏😊
I thought the sewing machine pad was so sweet. You gave it for us, but I made three for my daughter, sister, and niece with there name embroidered across the pocket. Still need to make mine. Love all your tutorials your smile blesses me most along with all the great teachings.
I absolutely love this. I bought a pattern to make the same thing years ago and never made it. Just now looked at the directions and it is SO complicated. You have made the same thing so easy! Thank you, thank you!!!!
Your commenting contributors added excellent ideas. I cannot wait to make a bunch for Christmas. My mother bought each daughter-in-law and my daughters a sewing machine and we collected sewing baskets and goodies to go with. Although I knew she was planning on it, I never thought of thought of machine pads or pin cushions, etc. So glad I watched!
Just see you for the first time. I love the way you are, like many of us a luttle messy, losing things around. Love the way you explained. Will make one for each of my machines.
Determined to make 2016 "The Year of the FINISHED Quilt(s)" {I am a veteran fabric acquisitioner, but only now starting to cut/sew/quilt that fabric!}, I have been enroling in several quilt classes. So I see how VERY handy this mat will be. Thanks Jenny!!!
+Diana Kastelic Just thought of something: if you added a couple of ties in strategic placement on each side, once you're ready to put away your machine, you could use the mat as a sewing machine cover!
I have one of these that was made for me as a gift. It really helps with the vibration you experience when sewing on those plastic folding tables you find at retreats. Mine does have a pin cushion added with velcro on the side of the mat. My pockets on the right are narrow; seam ripper width; pencil width and small snips width, so they don't fall down and get lost. The big pocket is great for a candy bar or snack! My mat does not SLIDE. The machine I use it with is a Brother 6000i, and it is a light machine. I do lay a piece of "rubber shelf liner" under it to increase the absorption of the vibration.
just made the machine pad. fun project. I made a 6 inch pocket but from that pocket over I sewed up 1 inch from the bottom of the pocket for the short supplies, Thanks for all the great quilt patterns. I start my day and end my day with Jenny . Happy New Year to all of you. HUGS
This is a really useful quick and easy sewing machine pad that even a beginner can create. I look forward to making one for my daughter in law who loves to sew kids clothes. Thank you Jenny as always.
Thank you for this wonderful idea. I created a large crazy quilt rectangle with my left over fabrics then trimmed it to the size to fit under my sewing machine and long enough to have pockets. I put a small pocket on each side and a large one in the middle, so I have a place for my small scissors and seam ripper on one side and a larger pair of scissors on the other side and then there is room for other stuff in the middle. Then I bound it in a coordinating fabric. I just love the convenience!
Thanks Missouri Star Quilt Company for such a great pattern. I made the sewing machine pad last week and I honestly don't know how I have lived without it! So easy to make and yet so efficient. Love all your tutorials, but this one really worked for me!
wow! just wow! I stressed over making one of these (not this pattern) for my sister for her birthday and THEN I found this tutorial, sure wish I would have found THIS ONE sooner. Absolutely love this one. so easy and STRESS free. thanks Jenny.
So easy! So adaptable. I will make this and just above the pocket sew on a tape measure. And use a ziplock bag in one side of the pocket for threads and snips. Thanks Jenny. A great tutorial as usual.
Thank you for a great idea. When I go to my quilt class we are a little short on room. This will help keep my tools handy and less chance of misplacing. Now that Christmas rush is over, it will be fun to make something for myself.
I just finish making this one for myself. I love your videos. They are really easy to follow. A little over a year ago, I hardly knew how to sew. Now I can't make enough, thanks to you and thanks to a special aunt who wanted me to keep her passion for quilting going after her passing. I'm sure she is looking down on me now and pretty proud of my accomplishments so far. Thanks
I've watched a bunch of your videos. You have a lovely personality and explain things clearly without a ton of unnecessary detail. Even if I'm not interested in making your project, I enjoy watching your videos because you're so cheery! Plus I usually learn a new tip or two. Thanks so much for making these videos!
I love it. I think I'll make one for the arm of my chair to hold my stuff while I applique or just to hold all 3 remotes that I have to use for the TV. Love the idea of putting a pin cushion on it and I always need a place for my extra glasses, spools of thread, needle threader etc.
This is my current favorite; but I confess that just about every new tutorial becomes my favorite! I made this with some great fabric I received as a Christmas present, then had enough to recover my iron board, and even make two matching pin cushions! This pad is so, so easy, and so handy! What a great idea, and thanks so much for figuring this out for us!
This is one of my favorite tutorials because it is something I can do in under an hour, its easy to do with scraps if needed It's something special for me as quilter and it gave me a whole knew outlook on using steam a seam!
I work the same way as you do. Shooting from the hip has always managed to work for me. I have been using the steam a seam for awhile now and I love how much better and easier my bindings look
Great Tutorial as usual! I added solid rubbery drawer liner to the back so the machine doesn't skid on the table and a plastic snap to keep it folded for transport.
I love your videos. I am not good at following patterns either, so this gives me hope. I am just starting to quilt and this is a great project for beginers. God bless you
Jenny thanks so much for helping us to learn and share with us that imperfect can work, because we are not always perfect. That has worked for me as I have followed you to learn how to make bags. I am wanting to make a bag for a special friend but with the missouri star on either side and pockets on inside . The stars I have learned to add a picture to the center square of a special picture of us on one star and of a special sewing class in center of block on the other side. I am excited to think it possible but need you to help us learn how, might be good for tourists to make one of these or friend who wants to keep those special times close. I sure hope I explained myself so we can do this. Thanks so much for all you do to help us learn.
Made one today after watching your tutorial last night. Love it and it was a very satisfying useful project to complete. Thank you for always giving your viewers/fans such easy to follow instructions and videos. I used all leftover materials and added a small pincushion with velcro.
I made one and love it. I customized the pockets to fit my cell phone, as well as the other items I like to keep handy. Thanks for another great tutorial. PS, I like that I can slide my machine over easily now to provide a little work space when necessary.
also.. I made 2 of the pin cushion sewing bags for each side of my table so I don't have to walk back and forth from machine to ironing/cutting, etc. Can't wait to make this pad next!
Hi Jenny, I have wanted a sewing machine pad for years but just used an old towel instead, this morning as a very novice quilter I made your sewing machine (first time sewing binding as it always scared me) pad and with the offcuts rattled up a wee needlecase from Whitney Sews to keep inside. My plan is to have things stored in the pad pocket to roll and store with my machine. Keep well from Bonnie Scotland
You all probably dont care but does anybody know of a method to get back into an Instagram account?? I somehow lost the password. I would love any help you can offer me
@Issac Roberto thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and Im in the hacking process now. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
I love it! Matter of fact, I love it so much I got right on it and made one for myself!! It was so easy! I took it a step further and made a pin cushion as well as pockets for seam rippers. This is such a great idea!! Thank you!!
I made mine today! I bought the fabric at your store and was going to make an apron, but the fabric matched my room and my other mat did not! Love it! Thanks!
Thank you for such a great video tutorial. This Sewing Pad is so useful and is quick and easy to make. Everyone that sews needs one. This also would make a nice gift for a sewing friend.
Hi Jenny, Hope you had a very Merry Christmas! Thank you so very much for all your ideas and your teaching for us. This mat was so easy the way you taught it that I made 4 of them today to give to my quilting friends. They think I am a genius..but I explained to them that I was far from that. I told them to get online to your tutorials and they too would be thought of as a genius' thanks to you. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart! God bless you and yours in the coming year.
i am really a newbee at quilting, been sewing for years, and just loved this project to get my feet (presser feet??) wet, it is fun and easy to make and oh so useful Loved the suggestions for customizing it for all my do-dads. Used your suggestion of material with sewing theme; it looks great at my machine, everyone comments on what a great idea and i quickly jump in, "got it from Missouri Star Quilt Co - you gotta go to their site! the video tutorials are so well designed and they have some truly fabulous ideas". ps i just love your intro music - its so upbeat as soon as it plays i just want to sew sew sew.....
I am so grateful that you did this tutorial. I have been admiring these for some time but was never able to find the pattern. Again, you have made something easy for me. I love your tutorials and have learned so much from you!
I always use Steam-A-Seam when I machine bind. Once I have the binding stuck down (front side sewn first just like you did in the video), I use a blind hem foot to stitch-in-the-ditch from the front using the flange to guide the way in the ditch. Since the binding was stuck down over the seam line on the back, the top stitching ALWAYS catches the binding on the back. It's a quick and easy way to successfully machine bind. Love this video and now going to make myself one this weekend! Happy New Year!
+Power Tools with Thread Thanks for confirming the SteamASeam will work for holding the binding when binding by machine. Jenny- thanks for a great video as usual!!
+Power Tools with Thread, I would LOVE to see a video of exactly how you do that... maybe Jenny could have you on with her doing a tutorial as a "Guest Artist"? Just a thought... ;-)
+Diana Kastelic I don't have a video, but I blogged the method here with detailed photos. powertoolswiththread.com/2015/07/25/favorite-quilt-machine-binding-method-2/
FIRST of all, Thank you again for a wonderful week at Sea last week! I enjoyed it SEW much! I had made this sewing pad a couple of years ago and had my "essentials" packed in it with me for the cruise. I placed this little darlin pad under each of the 3 different sewing machines and sewed away! I had a few of the ladies comment on it and had to confess I didn't remember where I had gotten the pattern from, I thought it was you, but I wasn't sure... I am so sorry! NOW, I'm confessing to YOU also! But, I've posted your link on the cruise Facebook page so the ladies and the gentleman can find it to make thier own. I hope you can forgive me for my case of CRSewin Stuff!! THANK YOU AGAIN!!!
Hi, Becky! This is the Oliso Auto Lift Pro Zone Iron, and we love it! You can find out more about it if you'd like by clicking on this link below. www.missouriquiltco.com/shop/browse?q=oliso+auto+lift+pro+zone+Iron
Great craft!! I think I will make it for a quilting friend for Christmas this year. I like the idea of adding a pin cushion to the side. Thanks for the great tutorials!!
Just finished mine! Made it with red & white checked one side, watermelon print on other...reminds me of fun with the family & picnics! Thanks for tutorial & Happy New Year to the Doan's and all you quilter's out there!!
made one this evening and am already in love! I used a nonstop fabric on the back (think the bumpy bottom of your slippers) because I was fed up with chasing my machine around the table. it is so much better! A word of advice though is to sit at the table you plan to use it and measure the pocket there. I made my pocket a bit too long and it sort lays in my lap. But lesson learned! Thanks for your great tutorial! Hunters star is my next project...
I love mine, instead of just fabric on the back I stitched grip it shelf and drawer liner just onto the portion of the mat that my sewing machine sits on. If your machine sits on a smooth surface it tends to slide around with out this. I just stitched it around all 4 sides before I put the binding on.
+Jennie Wallick Thank you for that suggestion! My machine has a cast-iron body but I know that even as heavy as it is a plain fabric base would make it vibrate off the table.
+Jennie Wallick Great Idea!.. I was THINKING that sliding would be the only issue with this project (and with 2 little ones soon-to-be here, sliding is one thing I fear). THANKS!!
This is my favorite tutorial because it looks easy enough for a beginning sewer like me to make. Thank you for the clear instructions. I think I found a new favorite RUclips channel, you have some great tutorials. Have a great day.
Love your Sewing Machine Pad!!! Can't wait to see Missouri Star Quilt Co at The Roads to California Quilt Show in Upland, Ca. I will be buying some sewing goodies at Missouri Star Quilt booth. So Excited to go and be there!!!!
This is so interesting, when I started sewing (right at ONE whole year ago) I realized I wanted a pad for under my machine (because it's on our dining room table and I wanted to protect the table as much as possible). But what I did was made it wider (by about 1-1.5 feet) to accommodate my notions. Then I saw other people had hanging pockets, and I've thought about it and I much prefer to lay the stuff on the table because many times I have stuff sitting in my lap. Great tutorial Jenny and Merry Christmas!
Thank you, Jenny for this awesome tutorial! I made one today for my Juki machine and posted photos on your Facebook page. Got 2 more to make for two more machines! LOL I'm in love!
Merry Christmas to you and your family. Nice looking family. Thankyou for your quilting video. I have made many quilts from watching your videos. I have made them all for family members. I come from a large family. And some of the quilts I made were for family members fighting cancer, two in particular were already handed down a generation because I have had two brothers who were young pass away. 5 out of my 8 siblings have had cancer. In addition to many of their children,But on a brighter note, the niece and nephew cherish the quilts dearly. Thankyou again! Jenny for sharing all your wonderful videos. Take Care and God Bless! And have a safe and Happy New year as well.
+Beverly Dahlberg What wonderful quilts to make giving comfort to those in your family fighting that awful battle, Beverly. Wrapping up in a quilt made from love is one of the best feelings.
This is the first thing I ever quilted. 8 yrs later and I’m back to make one of these for a friend who just bought her first sewing machine. Thanks Jenny!

Fröhliche und gesegnete Weihnachten für Dich, Jenny, und Deine ganze Familie!
I really like this tutorial. I think I can make one using scraps I have on hand. Thank you Jenny for sharing your time and talents.

Nice to see quilting 'craft' tutorials. We all need a break now and then. Very pretty. Thanks, Jenny.
Thanks
Wow, what an easy-to-follow tutorial for this adorable sewing machine pad!
Thank You!!!
What great videos!!am a self taught quilter and now ur tutorials are my teacher-thank
Thanks for the gift. Your sewing instructions are inspirational-- not only for this project, but also for making other things for my sewing room.
Thank you Jenny for sharing your time and talents. You are wonderful.
Love this project and works like a dream... I stitched a pincushion above my pocket and its my favorite part.
Very wise, truly inventive and useful pattern. Bravo and thank you Jenny. Roseline, Québec
I work the same way as you do. Shooting from the hip has always managed to work for me. I have been using the steam a seam for awhile now and I love how much better and easier my bindings look
Jenny, I love how your brain works. Your tutorials always stick in my brain. Thanks Ma'am
Great Tutorial as usual!
I added solid rubbery drawer liner to the back so the machine doesn't skid on the table and a plastic snap to keep it folded for transport.
Merry Christmas Jenny! Many blessings to the Doan family. Thanks for all you do for quilters everywhere!
My favorite lady on you tube :) Thank you again for helping us out by sharing all those wonderful ideas .God bless your hands xx
Made one today after watching your tutorial last night. Love it and it was a very satisfying useful project to complete. Thank you for always giving your viewers/fans such easy to follow instructions and videos. I used all leftover materials and added a small pincushion with velcro.
I like the care she has taken to explain the list of items and how she does everything step by step.
Thanks for super simple! I need this to keep notions
from getting lost on the table! Thanks for all you and your team do that keeps me sewing!
Fabulous! Will share this video with guild members, so we all can enjoy being organized at our Sew Saturday Days! Thank you
What a great pattern. Can't wait to make this with fabric from my unending fabric stash!
Great tutorial, as usual Jenny. I love that they are always very thorough, but clear and concise.
Jenny, I am so glad I found you!!
Thank you Jenny for sharing this tutorial, very interesting and practical, you are right always looking for scissors and pegs
I love the way your brain works! Thanks for making this simple and accessible
Love this sewing machine pad so much I made mine with straps on each side so it's also my sewing machine's cover. Love it!!!
@Issac Roberto it did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thank you so much, you saved my ass !
@Kash Nicholas You are welcome :D
I love the sewing machine pad tutorial. That will be so handy for your tools that you use all the time while sewing. Thanks!
I love it! Matter of fact, I love it so much I got right on it and made one for myself!! It was so easy! I took it a step further and made a pin cushion as well as pockets for seam rippers. This is such a great idea!! Thank you!!
+MrsBrownGnome How awesome! I love that everyone is getting creative with it!
love making items that help me keep things organized
I made mine today! I bought the fabric at your store and was going to make an apron, but the fabric matched my room and my other mat did not! Love it! Thanks!
Fab idea! And such a quick and simple fuss-free one to make. I'm going to make one each for the ladies at our sewing retreat!
+ella prevette What great gifts, Ella! I'm glad they liked them! :)
i am really a newbee at quilting, been sewing for years, and just loved this project to get my feet (presser feet??) wet, it is fun and easy to make and oh so useful Loved the suggestions for customizing it for all my do-dads.
+Power Tools with Thread we were so happy to find the wonderful Steam-A-Seam :) It is truly a life saver!!

Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge! I love your videos because they are so easy to follow and you have such a sweet personality!
Merry Christmas to you, your family and all your loved ones and thanks for all these lovely videos!
I love all your tutorials. I've learned so much! Thank you, I also love how your iron lifts up when you push it away! Makes me want one!

Great craft!! I think I will make it for a quilting friend for Christmas this year. I like the idea of adding a pin cushion to the side. Thanks for the great tutorials!!
Thank you for sharing this wonderful tutorial.
This is the best thing made for a sewer.Fantastic
Jenny keep it up with your tutorials I just love them. And this pattern is just what I need in my sewing room. Thanks so much.
Thank you Jenny for all your videos. Merry Christmas to you and the entire Missouri Star family.
What great advice BailaCate! Thank you!
Great idea
You can always fold & hem
I am really enjoying watching your tutorials,have been making a few purses,and make-up bags...Thanks
Such a quick and easy project ! Thanks Jenny!
So cute and love your humor!
I love mine, instead of just fabric on the back I stitched grip it shelf and drawer liner just onto the portion of the mat that my sewing machine sits on. If your machine sits on a smooth surface it tends to slide around with out this. I just stitched it around all 4 sides before I put the binding on.
+Jennie Wallick So smart! I was thinking "oh, I hope it wouldn't pull the machine off the table!" Your solution is brilliant!
+Jennie Wallick Thank you for that suggestion! My machine has a cast-iron body but I know that even as heavy as it is a plain fabric base would make it vibrate off the table.
+Jennie Wallick What a wonderful idea! LOVE it!
+Jennie Wallick Great Idea!.. I was THINKING that sliding would be the only issue with this project (and with 2 little ones soon-to-be here, sliding is one thing I fear). THANKS!!
A six pocket tote bag
The Charmed Dais
Have just made one of these,it turned out quite good for a first attempt as I have never quilted before.
Like the steam a seam use for this. Looks like a doable project!
I love this. I just added it to my weekday sewing priority list. Thank you so much for this Jenny.
Thank you, Jenny for this awesome tutorial! I made one today for my Juki machine and posted photos on your Facebook page. Got 2 more to make for two more machines! LOL I'm in love!
Love, Love, Love this!! Now I can find my tools! Cant wait to do this!!
Merry Christmas to you and your family. Nice looking family. Thankyou for your quilting video. I have made many quilts from watching your videos. I have made them all for family members. I come from a large family. And some of the quilts I made were for family members fighting cancer,
two in particular were already handed down a generation because I have had two brothers who were young pass away.
