  • This car is a GREAT value....but can we make it perform even better just by installing a proper drift gyro? That is what I test in this video!
The car itself can be purchased many places:
    - TEMU: temu.to/m/utza0b9cqwq
    - Amazon: amzn.to/4ayj5lA
    The gyro I installed, Futaba GYD470: bit.ly/3GOu1hb
Other gyros I think will work:
    - Yokomo DP-302 v4: bit.ly/3NxiUNu
    - Onsiki Daruma: bit.ly/3GU5Td0
    - Hackslider mini: bit.ly/3RPyuGI

If any one starting out can jump into the hobby with a rwd capable mini drifter for under 200 that's a pretty good deal to me and can always transfer the gyro into a future project if they decide to expand the hobby. great video by the way, was hesitating on these before but seeing this has sealed the deal for me sold😅

@@RoadsideRC I'm about to do my first replacement on mine which is the steering servo because it's locking when you turn left. I just looked up the first 1/18 servo that I could find and I'm just waiting for it to arrive. This is my first rc car and I'm still learning what all the electronics are. Thank you for this video, it completly transformed my drifting experience after I shutdiwn the internal gyro and bought a 30$ gyro and calibrated it to perfection.
The car drifts like a king and according to the gain in the gyro I can make it wobble and make it easier to drift and control or eliminate wobble and demonstrate more restraint driving to drift perfectly.
Thanks, After a few months with the internal gyro having an external one is like getting a whole new car and a great one.

Lol All black, Tinted windows, steel wheels with chrome beauty rings and hubs. But the best part was the LSD rear end with all that 3.0 power under the hood. Troy and others you may be interested to know I tried the YR Hackslider Mini and it works nice. No shake or wobble when you switch the car on, or before switching internal gyro off. The only catch is it can't handle more than about 45% gain without some gyro wobble, but I believe a better servo will fix this as others have found.
At 45% I'm steering manually a little bit but it's actually super fun and a very smooth gyro. For $63 Australian it's well worth it to make it actually drift.
I've ordered a Surpass 9g servo so we'll see how that goes for adding some gain and doing some bigger smoother circles!

    • @RoadsideRC
      @RoadsideRC  6 месяцев назад +1

Agree - I have tried that gyro before and found it very limiting with gain to prevent wobble.
Stepping to a gyro with a wobble-suppression, like a Futaba gyro, will help you run more gain without issues.
I'll be interested in the servo swap!

    • @bensonCP
      @bensonCP 6 месяцев назад

@@RoadsideRC Roger roger, I will let you know when I've tried it. The futaba is definitely the best from what I've seen but I could justify spending $180 Australian dollars to add it to a $120 model lol

      Gday Troy,
Took me a while to get back to this.
So I have the Mazda too now and swapping the servo seems to help.
I think the biggest issue with these cars which hasn't really be talked about as far as I can see is the steering lever ratio.
The servo horn is massive and I think this is the main reason the steering is twitchy.
It seems that the stronger (not faster) 9g servo can get better leverage over the steering and therefore smooths the steering somewhat, removing some wave and twitch.
I swapped the electronics on my AE86 and noticed the endpoints on the new transmitter max out the steering at 50%, which means that the steering servo is not using its full stroke due to the long servo horn I'm guessing.
I've read that making the servo stroke equal to the steering stroke will help tune out wobbles without needing to use gyro software, but I think for these cars, gyro with slow return is the easiest way.
If anyone has modified the steering linkages I'd be interested to know what effect it had

What is the gain in gyro ? The potensiometer sets how much countersteer it gives to the servo if understood right, but the gain i don't understand what it is. I have ordered a cheap gyro by RBR/C that is apparently for the WPL D12 truck. It's just a gyro with manual gain.
What rear toe settings does your car have?
Mine was not symmetrical from the factory so I adjusted it to just over 2 degrees toe which feels good. This is with stock gyro at 25% (the only useable setting). I found going more than 3 degrees toe made the car under steer and 'drag' too much despite being a little easier mid drift.. it just felt smoother with less toe, but I reckon it would be even better with a more adjustable gyro.

YES - there is a HUGE difference in quality of gyro, and it makes a MASSIVE difference that everyone can feel.
It is actually one of the most common mistakes. Folks buy cheap electronics -> get frustrated with how bad the vehicles drive -> quit. Quality components are very important.

I have not taken one of those apart to see exactly how they are wired.

When i first saw their ae86 i was like wtf nah thats not something we need, lets just say they redeemed themselfs with these ones, even mod-able to a certain extent as you showed with the aftermarket servo, which is merely an upgrade even if it means a bit of a work around when you want to run it

Yeah makes a difference obviously you know what better suspension will do……. Also I found before I made my mono and used the kit I found a cheap way to add more pressure was adding two ball post peace’s in the lower arm spots and used small rubber band around them and across the bottom of the chassis might have to try a couple to get the looseness or tightness your wanting but was effective…. As I would have stuck with it but I’m ocd and then I figured out a mono but just for quick fixes
