Hey everyone, today I'm bringing you a pose tutorial for Sirsasana/Supported Headstand pose. This has been a popular request as I know a lot of you are eager to give this inversion a try. In this yoga pose tutorial, I'll go over three different conditioning exercises that will help you develop the strength needed to support yourself in headstand before showing you different ways of getting into this pose.
With headstand, it's super important to remember that most of your body weight is not resting on your head and neck, it's actually being supported by your arms and back. You need to have a lot of strength to safely do this pose.
Please remember that inversions and arm balances can be really fun ways to challenge yourself, but they aren't necessary! There's no rush and no pressure to "accomplish" these poses. Always listen to your body and be really patient with yourself. It will take time!
I'll show you three different ways of doing a supported headstand, either the knee tuck, the leg lift or the float. You'll want to have your mat near a wall to start out with.
Most importantly, HAVE FUN and don't take yourself too seriously!

Thank you for this Kassandra. I have been frightened to try headstand as I predominantly learned and got into yoga during lockdown, online, without a teacher present, and worry about injuring myself. I will definitely give this a go.

What an in depth tutorial. Thank you for this. I'm still scared of doing headstands without a wall support because one time I've tried doing it without a wall and rolled over and landed up wrongly on my back to the point i've strained my neck and upper back. It took three to five days to lose the pain.

Thank you Kassandra for the detailed exclamations ! I'm only able to do the 2nd version (lifting one leg, then the 2nd one), and some days I don't hold more than 2 breaths in sirsasana...but sometimes i can hold 6-7 breaths, and that's huge for me ! Any tips to hold the pose longer please ? 🙏
Little story : I learned to do this pose bc of one of my students. I'm a maths teacher, but crazy about fitness and yoga. This student absolutely didn't care about maths, but wanted to get better in calisthenics, particularly handstand, so we used to speak (and demonstrate, if my outfit was appropriate !) at the end of the class. I know HOW to do handstand but I can't (and never will) bc of a broken supraspinatus. So I gave him some tips, and he was proud to show me some progress vids. And I got envious ! I wanted to go upside down myself too (and not only dowdog😎). So I tried the big inversion that was suitable for my injured body, aka : salamba sirsasana. And we then used to show to each other vids of our progressions😀 Sorry, I wrote a loooooong story here, but it's funny how life makes you take challenges that would have never expected 😀 (please apologize for the mistakes, I'm french !)

Great tutorial, thank you! It worked (with a wall) today! My teacher stresses the importance of keeping the shoulder-width distance between the arms a lot. Estimating on the basis of how you feel it may not be accurate. What she always asks us to do is first grab the elbows with your hands before interlacing the fingers. That's your shoulder width!

Thanks Kassandra. I was able to do the first variation on the first try probably due to the strength in my shoulders I’ve acquired in daily practice with You over the last year and a half. Quick question- Are headstands ever incorporated into a sequence, or flow? I am going to make it a point to come back to this training video - if an opportunity to undertake the pose popped up in flow it would be really cool as well. Thanks again…Namaste ❤

I realized that after a year of working out, my muscles are in pretty good condition (incl. core), but my flexibility is a joke. I can't bring my hips above my head, and when raising a leg, the best I could do was slightly above horizontal. I guess that's what preventing me from achieving the headstand. What exercises would you recommend to improve my flexibility for the headstand? I guess it's actually the same as training for a leg split, but I'm not sure.

Some very confusing queuing going on here, when you said send the hips forward as your legs go up, what you really mean is back above the hips, and when you say tap the crown of the head onto your hands as you go into the headstand, what you really mean is back of your head?? I seriously wouldn’t be learning from this, sorry!!
