I got into pipe smoking not long after losing my grandparents this year. I remember sitting on the couch with my wife and we were talking about a picture of them from their 50th wedding anniversary that we recently placed on a shelf. We discussed some of my fondest memories of them and talked about how my grandfather would smoke his pipe and tell the grandchildren tall tales of his life and adventures. I swear to you I could smell that pipe tobacco, right there in my living room.
I kinda got started the same way. Told my wife I wanted a pipe for Christmas, asked if she minded. She didn’t and told my brother in law to get me a pipe. Which he did. Rest is history. Really enjoyed your story. Happy smokes Wilson
The first time I started my BIL was a pipe smoker. He alway had a pipe rack on the table besides his chair with a humidor in the middle of it filled with Borkum Riff Whiskey flavor. When I started smoking a pipe that’s what I started with. I loved the smell. I later inherited his pipe collection and smoked them until my niece got older and I gave them to her. I started back about 3 years ago and I ordered a starter kit off Amazon from the Scotte company that had what yours had plus a 2 pipe case. I still smoke the pear wood pipe that came with it occasionally but now I’m smoking mostly MM cobs. I still exploring the tobacco selections I have found a few go to blends by I’m still looking
Good video and story, thanks for sharing. Also, you cleaned those pipes quite well! I had a similar journey into pipe smoking, bought my first pipe on my honeymoon, and smoked a house blend from the tobacconist where I bought the pipe. Journeyed into codger blends and kept trying new things over time. Been smoking now for almost 10 years on and off but have really fallen into the hobby over the last 2-3 years. My wife has always let me do what I want which makes it even more enjoyable having her support. Tolkien, Christopher Morley, and Spurgeon have all had an imfluence on me as well.
Great video Wilson! I got into pipe smoking very similarly. I read lots of Tolkien and Lewis as a teenager and was very interested pipes because of that. I got my first pipe as a wedding gift from a friend of mine. P.S. love the missionalwear mug on your desk.
Nice video! I got to smoking pipe with my wife's help too. Read this article in this "catholic gentlemen" blog about pipe smoking and how it can help you grow in faith then discussed that with my wife and on my birthday I got one. Thanks for all your videos.
Crazy! My wife bought me a Peterson system pipe a pipe nail and some borkomriff tabacco at a pipe shop in Victoria Tx in 2010 for my Birthday in Hope's I would give up cigarettes. I had no idea what I was doing and when I quit smoking cigarettes gave the pipe to a family friend because I didn't want it to push my desires back to cigarettes. A few years later and with the help of RUclips and a good friend I was able to pick up a pipe and learn and enjoy without conflating it with cigarettes. So thanks to my sweet wife I was led to the pipe!
Similar story. After spending a few years fascinated about coffee beans, origins, continents, toppings, I then considered tobacco to be a similar natured resource. Without any smoking experience, my first years were awful. But the YTPC kept me going, kept trying, kept coming back to the hobby. Now, no turning back. I still have my favourite coffees and enjoy it with quality tobacco. PS. 1st pipe was for Father's Day from my 1 year old daughter. I think my wife might have had an influence 🤔
Similar story for me. I’ve been into cigars for awhile. I still love cigars, but I was always interested in pipes. My dad got me one of those pipe starter kits like the one you described for Christmas. I too bought a cheap pouch of “pipe tobacco” from a “smoke shop” because it was the only thing open on Christmas Day lol. It was horrible. It’s what I imagine cigarettes tasting like. I went to my local brick and mortar a few days later and bought some Sutliff Vanilla Custard aromatic. Definitely more enjoyable than the RYO cheap tobacco. My next two blends were Elizabethan and Plum Pudding. I’ve loved pipe smoking ever since. I still even use that first pipe from time to time, though I’ve bought several more since then.
I've been smoking a pipe now for about a year. I've got some Peterson pipes, Savinelli, but one of my favorites is an old rusticated Dr Grabow big pipe. Smoking it now while watching. I'm smoking Haunted Bookshop.
Billy, keep it up... I am told that 1 year pipe smoking, you're still in the baby steps. The hobby took me 5 years to actually nail it. But seems like you have quality pipes and quality tobacco which I think is mist of our beginner problems. 5 years of trying, I upgraded my kit and then realised the enjoyment... keep going!
I read The Silmarillion 20 years ago, well I tried. It took forever I kept having to go back and see who was who and who they were related too ect....I planned to try it again but it never happened.
Good to hear your background, Wilson! Does your wife ever ask herself, “What in the world did I get myself into??...” lol My wife bought me my first pipe as well and I think she questions that decision sometimes...😁
Soooo.....it's all your wife's fault! 😉 Just kidding. Thanks for sharing your journey. Amazing how many people Muttnchop touched. I hope he's well. Enjoy your week!
Hahaha yup she certainly is! I've heard through the grapevine that he has been busy caring for family, hence his absence. Hopefully we see him back at some point.
Wilson. I really enjoyed this conversation you were so much more relaxed. I hope you do more videos like this if that fits into your plans. I had a question about the pipe you had last Friday was it a Ashton? Thanks for the video! 😊
Started with the Sil?! Seriously jumping in at the deep end with an undertow, didn't you? It kind of mirrors your pipe smoking journey, in that you didn't quite start with the right ones. But God works it all out in the end! HAHA, nice chat, Wilson!
Is that denatured alcohol!? If you were Presbyterian, you might have a little vodka or bourbon around to clean those pipes. :) My story is similar. After reading The Lord of the Rings trilogy a few times, after reading The Hobbit multiple times, and after watching all the LotR and Hobbit movies, it came down to a scene in one of the Hobbit movies where Gandalf was trying to clear his pipe while talking to Oakenshield. Just the ritual of maintaining a pipe in a fictional movie turned me on.

Yup similar journey!
Always interesting to hear how folks get into the hobby.

Thanks brother! I loved the chat! Keep it coming. Peace
Thanks Jeff!
Wilson thanks for sharing your journey! Spit to clean the bowl rim as you I have found works the best👍🍭🐓👶
Same here! I used to handwipes to clean the rim but saliva turned out to be quicker, cheaper, and just as effective.

Awesome to hear!
Nice chat, Brother! I’ll be getting back to you soon! I was brainstorming ideas out in the turkey woods all morning😁! It’ll be good!
God bless
Glad to hear it!
Thank you for sharing your piping stories and cleaning process!
My pleasure!

Interesting story of starting pipe smoking! Enjoyed it!
Thanks brother!
Great shirt. I grew up in Shawnee.
Also impacted and put on to pipe smoking after reading The Hobbit and LOTR
Very enjoyable story!
Thanks for listening

Super value pipe tobacco
My first time buying pipe tobacco was from a gas station. I aimlessly picked up half and half. The rest is history.
Love you videos as you may know, told you how to pronounce Aran, so Donegal is dunegawl! Keep up the good work
Thanks man! And I'll try to remember those pronunciations but don't hold your breath! 😂 A few of your fellow Irishmen have called me on it as well!
Lol I bought myself a joyodelf pipe to begin with because it was fairly cheap lol not bad but definitely doesn't look so nice lol
Good to hear your background, Wilson! Does your wife ever ask herself, “What in the world did I get myself into??...” lol
My wife bought me my first pipe as well and I think she questions that decision sometimes...😁
Haha I'm sure she does think that time to time!
Btw CP, if you don't mind, send me an email if you can. I'd love to share an idea I have in mind. Thanks!
Great story. Nice beard your sporting Wilson .It looks great on you. Is the alcohol suppose to.be blue to.clean a pipe?
Haha thanks! Yes it's a alcohol/mouthwash mix

I had a question about the pipe you had last Friday was it a Ashton?
Thanks for the video! 😊
Thanks Joe! Ill try to add vids like these in time to time. Yes that was an Ashton 220 army mount, a more recent purchase
I meant to say I really liked the pipe, I had 3 from the 80’s and I miss them.
@@joegodwin2002 I appreciate it! It has been a joy to smoke so far.
What’s up preacher man ! 👋
Hey TJ!
If you don’t mind me asking, what did you use at the end of the video for the outside of the pipe? Is it a pipe polish or protection?
I use Decatur Pipe Shield No-Buff Wax. It polishes it and leaves a temporary protective shield.
Entry level cigars. Yes, my dad would smoke those. In the car. With me riding with him. 🤢
What cleaner are u using? I always use whiskey lol
It is a combo of alcohol and mouthwash.
I only use grain alcohol.
witch hazel works
I'm a newbie, What kind of solution are you using to clean your pipe and how often?
A mix of isopropyl alcohol and mouthwash
@@TheSpurgeonPiper Thanks! Picked some up. How often do you clean your pipe?
Started with the Sil?! Seriously jumping in at the deep end with an undertow, didn't you? It kind of mirrors your pipe smoking journey, in that you didn't quite start with the right ones. But God works it all out in the end! HAHA, nice chat, Wilson!
What's Sil?
What's the blue liquid your using ?
It's a mixture of mouthwash and alcohol
@@TheSpurgeonPiper rubbing alcohol ? Are you doing a 50 50 mix
