Criss Oliva is perhaps the most underrated guitarist of all time. An absolute legend, and responsible for my favourite solo ever. Savatage were great.

What can i say that hasn't been said before? I love Savatage, i love their classic american take of Heavy/Power Metal, i love their more Symphonic and Progressive adventures, i love Jon's voice and work with the keys, i love Criss' solid riffs and blistering solos, i love Paul's capacity of storytelling and production work. They're the band i wish could've reach the Heavy Metal stardom.
R.I.P to both Criss and Paul, both will be dearly missed.

I'm a Swiss old time Sava fan. Savatage are one of my favorite metal band. See them live many time, including an awesome show at Wacken in front of 100000 fans. My fav are Streets and Gutter ballet. I like very much the album with Zak on vocals. Dead Winter Dead is one of my favorite. The only "Christmas" song is Sarajevo but it's ok if you follow the story of the concept. I have to say that I'm a huge concept album fan!

I've been a huge Savatage fan since the mid 80's and luckily got see them and party with them a few times. The coolest nicest dudes. Not one bad album( FFTR is even good imo lol) Top 3 for me is HOTMK, GUTTER, AND STREETS in no particular order. Oh yeah, Paul O'neill personally gave me 2 front row tickets to TSO🤘

Edge of thorns I think will always be my personal number 1. Everything about the album is great. And while Jon is of course one of the greats, with hall and gutter being their standout albums, I can't help but love everything Zak does. His voice is vastly different but it still fits the band tremendously. Just shows how great the band truly is.

Funny how this came out the same day I bought the new vinyl re-release of HOTMK. Of course I bought the original back in the day and couple of those cd releases later on but since this one had a gatefold sleeve and new liner notes... 😁
Can't argue with your listing. Mine would be almost identical. I really like Zak's singing too but Jon is just so unique and his voice can express such a wide range of emotions that there's really no contest after all. Savatage has been one of my all time favourites since the release of HOTMK. Would have been even earlier than that but it was only then I heard the band. Just hoping that they could sort out their schedules etc. and record and release a new album. Even if it was just one last time they ever did anything. I'd buy the vinyl, and the cd and shirts and whatever they'd put out with it.

    Good ranking!
I had to grin when you went through the strongest tracks of each album, because, if I'm not mistaken, you didn't even mention one of their ballads, although there are plenty of those in their catalog. Not even When The Crowds Are Gone or Believe, which are two of their greatest songs. I can just picture you listening to Streets and skipping all those piano ballads like A Little Too Far, St. Patrick's or Heal My Soul, making an annoyed face (although skipping’s not really fun on that tape of yours). I have to say Jon Oliva was at his best ballad songwriting on Streets.
I'm even less a fan of Zak's vocals than you are. Depending on the mood I'm in, I can't get past his voice at all sometimes. I also think that after Streets, the productions got worse and worse (I guess they were digital from Edge Of Thorns onwards), Edge Of Thorns, Handful Of Rain and Dead Winter Dead sound really bad, which is another reason I don't go back to those albums a lot, although there are some really good songs on each of them.
    My top 5:
    Gutter Ballet
    Hall Of The Mountain King
    Streets
    Sirens
    Power Of The NIght

@@ezioauditore7427 Here's my thing. I like the original lineup. I don't like Zack Stevens, I don't like Chris Cafferty or Al Pitrelli. So my bias limits me to the Jon & Chris stuff only. This band has always had this melodramatic flair that for me only worked with the OG lineup. I could certainly be wrong but I have just never been able to shake that opinion for whatever reason.

Thank you Dead Winter Dead is my least favorite ; basically the TSO start album which I enjoy TSO but more at Christmas and not when I want to hear Savatage. Chris Caffrey also seems to be toned down a little for my taste as well. Also finally someone that ranked Streets high and gave love to Poets & Madmen !!! Thank you for that as well totally and completely agree.

I first heard Savatage in '85 with 'Power of the Night' and the Oliva brothers have left a mark on my Metal soul ever since. R.I.P. Criss.
    #1-Hall, #2-Gutter, #3-Power, #4-Sirens, #5-Streets, #6-Dungeons, #7-Handful of Rain.
'Devastation' maybe the greatest song to end an album with ever. Came across 'Before I Hang' a GREAT song on a Japanese import.
Savatage wouldn't fit on my licence plate so I went with SAXON, tells you what I think of Savatage. Also had an ACCEPT plate on my German VW back in the mid '80's.

I must be the minority... I love the records that Zak sings on... particularly where Jon helps with some lead and backup vocals. I thought the last Dead Winter Dead & Wake of Magellan records were killer... mainly because of the lead vocal tandem of Zak & John and the Pitrelli (plus underrated Caffrey) on guitar. Ranked best to worst in my opinion.

This is the closest I've seen you covering and liking progressive metal on your channel, even if I consider Savatage to not be progressive metal. Even if I am salty about you not into bands like Rush, Dream Theater, and Symphony X, at least you love Savatage which does go into that vain of music a little bit, which is all that matters. Here's my ranking
    1. Hall of the Mountain King (1987)

I actually love Dead Winter Dead but I'd probably pick Gutter Ballet as their magnum opus. Jon is a phenomenal vocalist but I also like Zak a lot. I wasn't so sure about him at first, but over time I started to appreciate his style, which is obviously quite different from Jon's. I like his current band Circle II Circle too, even if I miss hearing him go for the really high notes like he did back in Savatage. But hey, that happens to lots of singers as age (and possibly other factors) takes away some of the vocal range.
