  • It's been 100 years since the Baltic states: Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, first gained their independence from imperial Russia, yet aggressions towards the region still have yet to subside. Although it's unclear whether Putin will actually challenge NATO and invade the Baltics, it is certain that tensions are still very high.

      I think with Trump as president and his stance on Nato has led to this anxiety of fear in the baltics state but i don't think Putin will invade the Baltic States it is to risky unless Trump makes an announcement to leave Nato or he threatens the world with nuclear weapons

      lam Kupar Well the fact is that your dear leader Putin is a major threat to world peace while NATO tries to play as a mediator and a protector for the Baltics.

    How is speaking the language of the country you are residing in discriminatory?

    • @RuenscapesReport
      @RuenscapesReport 6 лет назад +5

      Eventhough I do not side with the people that call these measures racist, I do understand their point. In most western countries there are living minorities along thier borders without such procedures.
      For example in northern Germany, in Schleswig, there is a Danish minority, that speaks Danish. The federal state of Schleswig-Holstein even has Danish as an official language in thier constitution. Same goes for German minorities in Alsace-Lorraine/France and the Sudetenland/Czech Republic, Austrian minorities in South Tyrol/Italy and western Hungary, and so on. Even regional languages like Occitan, Catalan, Breton, Welsh, etc, etc. are represented or at least officially recognized in thier country.
      Since the Baltic states are seeking to westernize in thier politics and economy this seems to be a bit of hypocrisy in the eyes of foreigners. Especially since Russia is kind of liberal toward most of its many minorities (eventhough there a quite a few exeptions).

    • @user-kn3of5pp8j
      @user-kn3of5pp8j 6 лет назад +52

      Maurice B Wrong and wrong. 1. You can’t compare the Danes in Schleswig-Holstein to the Russians in the Baltics and Estonia. Danes are a historical minority in this region residing in this are for hundreds of years. In the Baltic’s and especially in Estonia there were no Russians before the Soviet Union. Recognizing Russian as an official language in the Baltics would be the same as recognizing Turkish and Arabic as official languages in Germany. 2. Russia isn’t liberal to it’s minorities at all. It organizes blood baths in Chechnya and wipes its Finno-Uralic and Siberian minorities out. The only minorities they are somewhat liberal with are their Slavic ones.

    • @sirjemalmet849
      @sirjemalmet849 5 лет назад +11

      @Igor Smolovski Yeah right! Russia is gravejard of finno-ugorians. Lets take Karelia, Leningrad oblast, don't even want to talk about Siberia where oil is taken from finno-ugric land.

    • @Gamenetreviews

      That’s not true Riga had a majority Russian population during the Russian Empire. The Baltic states have had a large Russian minority for hundreds of years.

    • @janekslv
      @janekslv 4 года назад +10

      @@Gamenetreviews there has never been majority Russian population before the war, check your facts. Majority of Russians now in Latvia are immigrants or offsprings of immigrants sent to Latvia by USSR without ever asking Latvians whether they want it or not. You can't compare forced immigration without giving voice to one nation with a natural immigration and long co-existing in other European nations. So Baltic states now have a difficult task to integrate all those people. Unfortunately Russia is only making things worse, because it is actively seeding distrust and suspicion. They are doing it for political gains, they don't really care about people here. If they did, they would first take care about their own citizens in their own country where there are abysmal level of poverty, corruption, alcoholism etc.

    Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are great independent countries that deserve to stay free and happy. Also, Latvia and Estonia did make very confusing laws about ethnic Russians, and I’m not saying I agree, but I can see were they are coming from, as Russia did send Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians to Siberia as slaves or to torture. I just hope Russia doesn’t hurt my homeland (Lithuania) or any other Baltic or European country. Peace and unity, god bless.

    I am an ethnical Russian from Latvia, and in my hometown we've been discriminated for ages. Here are a few examples. 2 of my friends were walking and talking Russian, and because of that, they have been threatened to get beat up, if they don't speak Latvian. My grandma could't handle the discrimination anymore, which lead her to move to another town with the majority of the population being Russian. My cousin got in countless fights, started by Latvians discriminating him.
    NATO hasn't really done much good in Latvia either. We see NATO soldiers litter on the streets, driving with high speeds on roads, fight other people etc. usually their excuse for these acts, is that they defend our country, so we should be grateful.
    Since the Soviet union fell and left the Baltic states, ethnical Russians have been discriminated upon, with no the opportunity to leave the country, since the government won't let them.

    About the citizenship: When Estonia regained independence, people who's parents, grandparents or themselves had been Estonian citizens prior to occupation got citizenship automatically (including ethnic Russians, Jews etc). Those who were brought in touring occupation (basically as colonists) and didn't want to leave had to apply for citizenship. Proportionally a large part of them were ethnic Russians, though there were significant number of Ukrainians and Belorussians and small number of other ethnic groups from the former SU.

    Russia has learned its lessons
    -They can`t wait to redirect all of the Baltic Transit to its own newly built ports... the transit which made single greatest contribution to economic growth of so called Baltic Tigers. ( some 20% of their total GDP)
    -They can`t wait to see EU financial support program stopped..
    -They watch as Baltic States DEPOPULATE at staggering rates.
    -They enjoy finding out EU support is spent on building hi-end gyms in villages no longer inhabited .
    -They rejoice at the thought of Soviet built industries withering away as part of EU deal.
    -They are curious how all of the above factors will work together with ever increasing energy costs and Russian sanctions on their agricultural and food exports.
    Russia won't invade the Baltic States as they have no intention of supporting the population.

    • @raceris7309
      @raceris7309 5 лет назад

      Hello there fellow Russian! I'm here to break these points for you:
      "-They can`t wait to redirect all of the Baltic Transit to its own newly built ports... the transit which made single greatest contribution to economic growth of so called Baltic Tigers."
      That is not really true - Baltics got this title once they decided to shift their exports to Western Europe, which really worked. The gas transit did contribute to their economies, I do agree with that.
      "-They can`t wait to see EU financial support program stopped.."
      It won't be stopped, but rather the amount of money they receive will be decreased.
      "-They watch as Baltic States DEPOPULATE at staggering rates."
      I can tell the same about Russia, Bulgaria, Moldova or any other ex-Warsaw Pact member country. According to some studies, immigrants from all over the world are getting back already.
      "-They enjoy finding out EU support is spent on building hi-end gyms in villages no longer inhabited ."
      I don't know where you got this, but once again, it's not true. The amount of people living in villages has been on a decline since early 2000's. They use those funds to build roads, rebuild parks, buildings etc.
      I would write more, but I'm a little tired. You shouldn't be surprised why Baltics are so scared of Russia - throughout their history, they only had bad experience with them. We do not hate Russians, just Kremlin. Russians in my area are a little loud, but by all means, I do not hate them - they're quite warm and nice people. You would be surprised to hear that Polish is the biggest majority in my country, not Russians :)
      Greetings from Litauen!

    Lithuanian here, you really over-dramatize the whole "there are ethnic russians in the baltics and tensions are so high!"
    Truth is, at least here in lithuania, russians are a small minority and pose no realistic threat from within and there are no systemic clashes between lithuanians or russians happening. Russian government itself is naturally trying to use the minorities as leverage and pretext to put their nose in everything. In some cases they use this pretext to invade, but the Baltic countries are seeing that from miles away, that's why they join NATO and actively whistle-blow on Russias agression. I feel like part of the whole culture here is shifting towards being a guard at the gates of europe. People were really messed up by those consecutive occupations...

    Russia would start war with not just the EU but also with the NATO. Russia in all it's might, can not win a conventional war against all three. The result would be an open use of nuclear weapons and therefore nobody would win.
    Even when Russian seperatists would start something, Russia would do nothing, because those three are NATO countries.
    Also Russia involves itself only in areas around the black sea and Crimea. Leave the black sea alone and Russia won't do anything.

    • @marvelfannumber1
      @marvelfannumber1 6 лет назад +1

      Even if in some outlandish scenario neither side uses tactical nukes, Russia would still lose. They wouldn't stand a chance against a NATO force at all and their allies are either weak or unwilling to back them in an offensive invasion.

    • @D.M.S.
      @D.M.S. 6 лет назад +1

      marvelfannumber1 it would be a long stalemate without both sides really invading each other. Until Russia would wait out it's winter, but the NATO would use it's airforce and drones to destroy Russias infrastructure. All it's ressources wouldn't help them, If they have nothing to get to them and there big numbers wouldn't help them without weapons and moral.
      China would not involve itself in such a war. Not with a newly militarizing Japan, Taiwan, Southkorea and the other Asian states and India against them. Also China would loose any economical gain in a pointless war and would fall into a civil war thanks to more liberal influence from Hongkong.
      There is no gain from war. For no one, because the US had to deal with a new inflation, world economics pretty much ends, the middle east would tare each other apart even more than now and the EU had to rebuild almost every country in the east of Germany and handle the refugees. Hundreds of little wars would start after it. Over the whole world. Three generations later we would still clean up that mess. Think about it! We are still cleaning up messes that originated in the first world war.

    • @marvelfannumber1
      @marvelfannumber1 6 лет назад +1

      +D.M.S.
      True, contrary to popular belief a full-on war between countries would be a massive ecnomic drain on everyone and give more disadvantages than advatages. Still, Russia would probably lose if we hypothetically leave out nukes. They simply don't have the resources, diplomacy, population or geography to allow them to successfully push back all of NATO, let alone invade NATO countries. Russia isn't the Soviet Union anymore, they can't compete with NATO at all, which is exactly why the Russian strategy has consistently been to weaken NATO from the inside, because they know they can't beat them in an all out conflict.

      Sprint Right Option Do know what NATO is? It is a organization that was mainly made to deffend Europe against soviet aggression and if one of the countries get attacked NATO has to join in basically an attack on one of them is an attack on all

    Why is it always Russian aggression? All of a sudden Russia has thousands of US troops near its border. With thousand of military bases, isn't it time to view this objectively and not only talk about Russian or Chinese aggression, but also about American aggression.

    As a Latvian Political Science student I would say this: invade - probably not. NATO has invested enough resources in signalling to Russia that it will not take an all-out assault lying down. As in, that if Russia attacks, the entire force of NATO will be behind the Baltic countries. However, you don't need to create an all out assault to destabilize the country. There are propaganda and disinformation options, targeting not only Latvia's ethnic Russians, but also nationalist Latvians, creating an increased sense of insecurity and tension. Secure and stable Baltic states are not in Putin's best interests. When these countries are insecure, with an increasing political standoff between the ethnic Russians and nationalists (who Putin portrays as fascists, playing on historical trauma from WW2) then Putin can portray himself as a defender of ethnic Russians and rally the nation around common enemies. And that is tremendously useful to Putin, whose grip on power in Russia has been loosening due to sanctions, human rights abuses etc. Basically, as long as Putin can maintain his strongman stance he has a better chance of maintaining the sympathies of the Russian people and staying in power. That's my opinion.

    The thousands of NATO troops on the border of Russia doesn't really help ease the tension :/ (not saying it's not Russia's fault but the Western aggression is certainly not helping. )

    • @fabioshire97

    • @Yt_chatEnjoyer
      @Yt_chatEnjoyer 6 лет назад +1

      fabioshire97 yes that's true, but the so called "peace making" countries piling troops on the border isn't going to stop the aggression. If anything it seems to be backing them( Russia ) in to a corner, where it's easier to justify war and violence.

    • @shadymerchant1198
      @shadymerchant1198 6 лет назад

      russia placing an army several times the size of the nato forces on the border doesn't help ease tensions either if russia truly wanted peace they would demobilize their forces on the balitc border instead they continually build it up

    • @Yt_chatEnjoyer
      @Yt_chatEnjoyer 6 лет назад

      John Smith first of, the buildup of NATO soldiers is far larger, and with way more countries backing it. Sure Russia doesn't want peace but we aren't gonna force them in to peace by further mobilization. It's gonna corner them and make them fight or flight.

    • @shadymerchant1198
      @shadymerchant1198 6 лет назад +1

      russia was the first initializer they started the buildup on the border and at present keep an army several times larger then the nato forces on the border this is not an equal response to western aggression but a clear flexing of military might to try and provoke nato

      1. It wasn't just "your" people, a lot of people from Russia itself were sent to Siberia, including my grandad who was Ukranian. It wasn't Russia who was sending "your people" to Siberia, but the USSR. The days of the USSR are long gone. It's like still blaming modern Germany for WW2.
      And yes, you do have to know Russian to get a decent job. Latvia is not alone and many countries in the former USSR do. Let's not play the victim game and pretend that Latvia is the only victim here. A lot of people are, and you can't do anything about it.
