It's also worth mentioning that the Baltic states are European Union states, so they are part of the EU's Common Security and Defense Policy, which includes mutual defense like Nato. That means any conflict with the Baltic states would not only include Nato, but also Ireland, Austria, Malta, Cyprus, and, most crucially, Sweden and Finland. And third NATO weapons appear to be far superior to their Russian counterparts. Factor in renewed concerns in Finland and I think the dynamic has changed a great deal.
Russia capability is in their nuclear weapon. If there is a possibility that nato will invade russia, russia wont hesitate to use it.
@@irham191 well since NATO has never invaded anyone, that's no big deal. The region was almost entirely Russian. Not German at all at that point. Also, Germany was still under a magnifying glass internationally and didn't want to have anything to do with expansion (so it was well timed to be able to say: "Look, they refused it when we offered. See? So rightfully ours for all time.")
Fun fact, not long ago Germans from Russia thought about making it a German cultural center again and started buying up properties and settling there. Once the Russian government found out this was happening they didn't allow them to do it anymore.
It's not something we know for certain happened, it was reported in the media according to some secret inside informant, so nobody knows how accurate it really is. And yes, Kaliningrad had a majority Russian population even back then, but so did Northern Kazakhstan and various other parts which would later end up not being part of Russia when the USSR collapsed. At the time, some in Moscow might have seen Kaliningrad as a liability rather than a strategic advantage.

Well, I think we've now seen that Russia is a paper tiger. Its strength on paper vastly exaggerates what it can bring to the battlefield in practice. It's equipment is poorly maintained, its troops poorly trained and with low morale, and its stores of modern munitions tiny. Furthermore, its vast size is actually a disadvantage as it needs to spread its forces thinly to cover vulnerabilities along an immensely long land border - a problem only further exacerbated by its relatively small population given its size. Add in that its population is aging, shrinking and poor and it has little capacity to sustain a full-scale war. Its economy is almost wholly reliant on fossil fuel exports, and thus very vulnerable, as we've seen. If it struggles this much with Ukraine - a poor nation, outside NATO - I think any direct conflict with NATO will make it look like Iraq in the Gulf War.

7:33 Correction: Suvalki region is not hilly, its flat. Extremely flat. I know I live there. Also there are not that many forests so anyone with superior tank force would take control of it. Deeper in the country you would find many forest - a perfect landscape for guerrilla warfare
I remember looking at topography maps its rather high above sea level in some parts.
Yes it is. I wonder where he got it from that it's hilly O_o
I have been there and it is extremely flat like any other place in baltics 250 meters is nothing and not a problem for an offence. People cannot even do hiking over there because it is not accepted as hill.
And if you realised kalliningrad is a place which is at sea level and surrounded by flat area that means it is extremely vurnerable for an offence and a blockade at Gotland island would choke it pretty much easily from naval supplies. I don't think nato is the one who is vulnerable here.
@@yaenko8963 also it would be interesting how finland and sweden would react during a crisis. Apparently the rising tension push them closer to NATO, instead of farther apart... even a full membership is still on the table. Than you'd have two choking points, and even a possibility for troop transfer between Helsinki-Tallinn, although quite dangerous one would think.
I don't understand. If there is a conflict between russia and NATO, why worry about the suwalki gap? The first order of business for NATO should be the destruction of Kaliningrad. It's already war, why spare an enemy stronghold in the middle of NATO territory? And clearing that threat would essentially solve the suwalki gap problem.
The fact that area is still there is cringe.
@@Dave102693 I ve looked into that, basically Russia has it because noone else at the time wanted it.
For Nato members, the other members are obliged to react. It's like invadind Germany or USA land from a military point of view. It's not going to happen easily.
The most impressive part of this video is that a large scale military exercise by some of the most powerful nations in the world was halted by a minuscule virus.
Training new soldiers is expensive.
That minuscule viruses has killed 165,000 people so far
Sorry I forgot all the lives that China has covered up and hasn't accounted for
Didn’t 1.7 million people died from this “minuscule virus?”
I think you guys missed the point of my comment
In theory when one NATO member is attacked other countries are supposed join the war. The problem is there was a similar pact before WW2 between Poland, England, and France. In 1939 when Germany invaded Poland, but France and England decided to wait and build up the army instead of attacking. I'm afraid it can happen to NATO as well.
waiting to build their armies ? More like England , France just looked the other way and pretended the problem would go away. Like ostriches these countries put their heads in the sand and pretended nothing ever happend. These days Nothing has changed, OBAMA let ISIS take almost the whole of MIddle East.....he was another Ostrich.
Well, USA don't need to build up any army as they already have many times the capabilities Russia have at this time. Considering most of Europe is part of NATO as well, there's just insane difference between NATO and Russian power in favor of NATO. There wasn't really a pact between Poland, France and Britain, but more that England and France guaranteed Poland's independence. NATO is more of an alliance, but yeah, if USA for example decided not to help a NATO country getting invaded I don't think anyone could stop them. It would however be against USA's interests so it would be unlikely
@Albert Moore indeed...

Russia has an economy the size of Florida ,and is in a demographic/economic death spiral!
For us Yuropoors in comparison - Russia has an economy the size of Italy.
Strong video. I wouldn't underestimate how fast the 21st Airborne Division of the Americans can deploy - the US has shown that they can deploy 50.000 soldiers with armored brigades (Striker and M1 Main Battle tanks) within only a couple of days.
Couple of days is too long. American generals agree that Russia could take Baltics in 24 to 48 hours. You know, they have more troops near Baltic states than there's currently Russians in Ukraine. Ukraine is a large country so it can do fighting withdrawals and has a lot of manpower. Baltic states have very low manpower and have no room to retreat.
@@teemuvesala9575 But they can't mobilize themself. We all saw how Russia mobilized around Ukraine. Sure Ukraine is bigger, but the mobilitazion would be to obvious not to react to by Nato.
@@teemuvesala9575 The Russians would be out of gas in a couple of days, so that's long enough. Also, as another comment pointed out, Russia would have troop build up for months before hand. Given Putin's actions in Ukraine, do you really think NATO would just pretend nothing was happening? Possible, but unlikely.

@@nz2191 why you so negative in comments? Realistically speaking Russia losing equipment, men power (which both seem weak not what anyone expected) and economy is falling extremely fast. The size wouldn't matter because they couldn't afford. They would be delusional to try to invade NATO members. By the time everything ended in Ukraine, Russia will be very close to bankruptcy or bankrupt. And Ukraine ain't NATO, the newest fighter jets would be flying rapidly to allies aid. Poland got new ones from USA if speaking about them. Let's just hope Russia is not dumb enough to use Nukes because they for sure will get clapped and that would be last resort. Even now Russia and UK basically spending same amount on military. And Russia is already pretty drained. Russia's yearly spendings on military 60 billion more or less while NATO 1 trillion or more.

Using the term "former Soviet republics" is as ridiculous as calling the United States a "former British colony". The three nations were independent before annexation by the USSR.
Not only, they aren't "former Soviet republics", they are "formerly Soviet-occupied nations".
What's so ridiculous about that? A "former British colony" would've been perfectly adequate if spoken, say, 30 years after the War on Independence. By the way, the three nations you spoke of were independent for just 2 decades (1920s to 1940s). And a part of the Russian Empire for about 2 centuries before that (1720s to 1918).
@@alexrogov7186 How exactly do the two decades of independence devalue these three countries in term of how they should be referred as? Despite only being independent for 2 decades before annexation and occupation by USSR and Nazi Germany, they are still Baltic countries or states; only being de facto members of occupying USSR.
I'm surprised how quickly a profile without a single subscriber or content to go around with gained so much upvotes in such short notice. Did I really ruffle someones nuts?
@@alexrogov7186 Former British colony is technically correct, but it's weird as fuck if someone keeps this as the first characterization of a country every time the country is mentioned... And the Baltics weren't even legal parts of the Soviet Union, they were illegally occupied by it.

@@sylinic6081 "How exactly do the two decades of independence devalue these three countries in term of how they should be referred as?" - seems like you are putting someone else's words into my mouth. The term "former Soviet Republics" is technically correct. That's all I intended to say. Baltic states were member countries of the USSR both de jure and de facto since the actual borders of the USSR were recognised in 1945 by other Allied nations and later confirmed in 1975 by the OSCE. As for the number of upvotes - I couldn't care less.

@@pierresihite8854 The switching is only bad for Russia because Latin alphabet brings those Turkic central Asian countries closer to the already Latin alphabet using country Turkey + also western countries who also use Latin. If war would break out between Russia and the West, i’d suspect Russia would be succesful in the opening moments of war, but as time would go on, the tide of battle would shift due to western reinforcements.
Nato is too big to mobilize because everyone fears a world war. The great war was exactly a network of alliances going to war.
This comment is correct.
European nations also have superior production to Russia and a superior population, thus in attrition, they win defacto.
When it comes to Baltics, Russia couldn't just walk over the area. Baltics are under Nordic defense umbrella, for that reason Russia would have to concentrate most of its army against Baltics which would leave their country wide open in East- Europe.
There are ready plans in Nordics for instant retaliation and moving troops to conflict zone in case that would ever happen.
According NATO simulations only European countries that are capable of instantly retaliate and help Baltics and East- European countries are Nordics btw, that is something to think about. NATO is too politicized and big so its interests are scattered all over the place which causes massive delays because of the internal bickering.

Doubt it. USA is about the only major power in NATO that would have the balls to fight Russia. The rest would find a loophole to claimed they technically helped, without actually doing much. But since Russia is no longer under someone like Stalin (willing to do insane war crimes), the ensuring partisan war in the Baltic would eventually make Russia withdraw.
@xmr7 pt95 They did. The idea that the british and french somehow didn't do enough to help Poland is a lie. They declared war on Nazi Germany and did what they could. And NATO is considerably stronger in terms of manpower, economical capabilities, and stratetig/tactical issues t hand in an eventual russian conflict.
