Has been for a long time, simce at least 2008. And nothing is forever. Just ask the British - they used to rule the world with the pound sterling as reserve currency. One major war (ww2) and it was all over... just like that. Within 40 years they had lost all of their colonies and then some. By now they're barely holding on to rich country status. I really appreciate that you mention specific, concrete actions that the people involved took. I feel like in general all I hear about Trump is "He's bad because X thing he did right immediately now" and then everyone forgets about it entirely as soon as they find the next thing to be enraged about, and it's really hard to hear the bigger picture layed out like this.
I'm not entirely convinced that Trump would consider Taiwan a "freeloader" though, the same way he does countries like Belgium. He has made it very clear that he considers himself a "negotiator" and views the world in terms of what he wants, what other people want, and leverage to achieve what he wants. This is a core feature of what Trump considers his identity and what he sells to people as his brand.
Specifically about his remarks on article 5 that everyone keeps quoting, I've heard the whole thing he said, and everyone keeps leaving out the tail end of it which is very important context. He was bragging about how he successfully got Europe to pay their way. He was, again, talking in terms of negotiating, what he wants, what they want, and leverage. He wants them to pay more, article 5 was leverage, he applied it and got what he wanted - everyone is paying more. I don't think it was a declaration of future policy at all, the way he phrased it was as if he had _already_ accomplished what he wanted, he was referring to his previous term AFAIK.
Taiwan is a different scenario and what he can and can't get out of it and what leverage he has available is different. Understanding the other party and their interests and bottom line is very important to being a "negotiator" - Taiwan's situation is completely different from Belgium's situation and does not present the same opportunities to haggle. Belgium doesn't invest in their military because they think they don't have to and want to spend the money to treat themselves instead. Taiwan doesn't invest in their military because doing so would likely trigger China to invade imminently. Belgium is not trying to defend themselves, they rely on others to do the fighting for them. Taiwan is VERY concerned with defending themselves, and does everything within their very limited power to do so. It's different and the difference would not be lost. Notably, Taiwan's lack of security and need of outside defense is their weakness that can be exploited at the negotiating table, that's Trump's leverage. The thing they want that he has to offer.
What he wants to get out of Taiwan is also not the same as what he wants to squeeze out of Belgium. From Belgium and the rest of NATO, he wants money and military allies. Cold hard cash buying military goods - preferably munitions purchased from American suppliers and pointed at American enemies. From Taiwan he wants semiconductors, the first island chain, and to piss off China. But even more than that, Taiwan itself is a big part of his _leverage_ when negotiating with China. Trump's stance on Taiwan will almost certainly not be about actual Taiwan, but rather how he can use Taiwan to damage China's position as much as possible while compromising his own position as little as possible.

I am a temporary Isolationist. We have lost almost every war we have gotten into since WW2 because we have not had a clear mission and the support of the majority of the country for the conflict. If Ukraine and Israel need weapons, then contact Afghanistan because we left our military aid there. Regarding any other issue, our allies can take care of themselves and if they can't then they are just leeches on our country. The UK and France our nuclear powers, there is zero reason the US needs to be involved in the Ukraine conflict. That is Europe's issue, we have no obligation to get involved unless a NATO member is attacked. So why are we involved??? Why are we involved with Israel??? Israel is a nuclear power and can hold their own. We as Americans have way too much shit at home to focus on. Our allies are on their own until we get our house in order. Then the next conflict we get involved in, needs to be a declaration of war and a clear mission for victory. If not, then there is zero reason for us to get involved. We also need to stop all trade with China and Russia and only do business with our allies. This is not complicated; we just have morons running our country! If the US ever really went to war, like full on wartime economy where the general public at large had a common sense of an imminent threat if we didn't defeat an enemy overseas, our military spending would be more like 150% GDP and whoever it is would be crushed. Our industrial infrastructure, sense of nationality and self reliance on resources is just... too much. It's really underestimated, and pretty crazy to think about how large our military spending and infrastructure already is, how scary it would be if the modern economy configured itself to that of something like in ww2 where all factories had a military or essential civilian purpose. i think russia fears it so they'll push to the inch of the line but never cross it...

The mentioned Trump's quote (8:55) is from 2024 and the Poland's rise of spending for defence is from 2023 (09:03). The change in Polish policy can't be the result of Trumps quote, unless they can travel in time. Similar with other countries. Germany has risen spending in 2022 (09:29). The real reason why Poles nad Germans rised their defence budgets was the Russian agression in Ukraine. Poland has had a very bad experience with Russia and everyone can now see the threat Russia poses in real time.

Denmark exports more than double to the US as we import from US, And have for a long time spent under 2% on defense despite being close to Russia only having a waterway in the Baltic Sea to the east most of the country, trad unbalanced yes, free-riding yes, is that smart when the US need you much less, probably not.

The Scandinavian nations are full of ingrates who trash talk and mock America while conveniently benefiting financially from American taxpayers flipping the bill for their defense budgets. Russia would easily invade your country it wasn't for the sacrifices of the American taxpayers who Danes and other Scandinavians love mocking and denigrating. Ingrates.

Nobody outside the Baltics has any future reason to fear Russias tin pot regime.
So sick of the understatement of EU's crushing advantage over Russia.
We're overwhelming gigantic in comparison. Russia is a bug.
Germany alone has 66% Russias population. And twice the gdp.
EU can squish them if they try anything.
Trump doesn't matter to Europe either way. Biden/Trump, I don't care.

Defense spending by NATO countries *will* be considerably more, because everything costs considerably more. Doesn't necessarily mean they're receiving more kit.

Looking back at his presidency I think he spent a lot of time in the pacific, I don't think he plans to abandon taiwan or any nation surrounding china. You know the country democrats were mad he was talking bad about.

    • @altrag
      @altrag Месяц назад

Democrats were never mad that he was talking "bad" about China. Democrats were mad that he was talking "stupid" about China (and everything else). There are ways to level insults that don't make _you_ look like the fool, and that's what much of Trump's rhetoric did. Sure his supporters ate it up (which is all Trump himself cares about), but to everyone else he simply looks like an idiot when he does stuff like that. Especially when he's simultaneously bragging about how well he and Xi got along and posting pictures of them sharing a giant chocolate cake and whatever.
Its the _stupidity_ we have a problem with. And by "we" I don't just mean democrats - I mean everyone who isn't a frothing-at-the-mouth Trump cultist. There's even a large segment of Republican supporters who are capable of seeing how absolutely ridiculous Trump makes the US look. Trump's not wrong when he says the world thinks the US is a laughing stock. He just doesn't have the self-reflective ability to understand that his presidency is close to the entirety of the reason the rest of the world has that view.
