I remember during my psychology degree which I took in 1974, nearly 50 years ago, Noam Chomsky was already considered a great intellect and leader in the field of linguistics. I have no words to describe my admiration for his continued words of wisdom that shine like a beacon through today's murk.
@@GlennC789 I think Pinker is clearly a very clever man and has some useful things to say on many important areas of debate. I do not have an opinion on McWhortner since I have not read his work.
@Siłerka We accept risks without our consent all the time. We have literally sent people off to war to die, multiple times, without their consent. The idea that people should be able to consent to any risk is a literal impossibility in any working society. But more to the point, if you think the risks of the vaccines are anywhere near the risks of NOT having the vaccines, you've been consuming a bunch of propaganda instead of listening to actual experts who know what they're talking about. Everybody I know has had multiple Covid shots, none of them have had any serious negative consequences, and when a few people I've known did then get Covid -including me - it was mild as a result. That matches what the data experts and serious scientists have been telling us. It's amazing to me what people can be persuaded to believe, flat Earth, a man in the sky watching literally everything all the time, all the crap coming out of Russia, Democrats eating human babies, what an absolute cornucopia of bullshit.
When ancient Greece began it's concept of democracy. demos are the people. The leaders insisted that a city council include elderly to add a long view historically. And please do not include Biden in that crowd.

Just wanted to bring up a few points regarding this interview because i noticed the same issues in some of your questions with Andrew Bustamante. First of all, I absolutely love all your podcasts and your interviewing questions are absolutely stunning most of the time. The amount of preparation you put into your questions is inspiring. When considering political matters, it's often irrelevant to talk about things like who is to blame, is putin a dictator/psychotic/evil, did putin fail to conquer the hearts and minds of the world etc... Politics is about interests so it should be seen with that lens. Most of the times, about money, very often about resources. The questions should be more about which interest is served by this action, what is the end goal of this policy or this war, etc.. Lastly, I was hoping to ask if you'd consider a podcast that mentions the war in Yemen, which has been a unilateral slaughter by the west and saudis. Thank you for your consideration and again, I'm a huge fan of yours.
I guess what is equally relevant is questions about human psychology. I would say a political leader's state of mind affects the decisions he makes. A very fundamental question is whether individuals who make such decisions as leaders are 'bad apples' or are there certain political, social situations that make individuals act in evil ways. Not to mention people who obey such orders or fall prey to brainwashing. As to Yemen, a lot of other countries (such as my own country of origin) are involved in the commitment of atrocities there.
It is also about Human things like Pride, Humiliation, Grandiosity, Legacy etc so it is not only about money, Putin maybe right now richest man on the world but he doesn't care about that he uses money to control people and he uses the money for Power. Human beings are the most vain species in the entire universe, most people will chose Pride and Respect instead of money hence you see in country after country the poor will repeatedly vote against their own interest because they feel disrespected when they feel powerless you can see poor giving power to people like Jair Messias Bolsonaro, Modi, Trump etc who are completely corrupt and would be against their self interest if it was only about money but these people give them something else they give them feeling of respect, power over other enemies (those who look down on them). Hell we are apes, even an ape would go violent and kill it's owner if it thinks it's been disrespected even though owners feed it constantly, there are experiments on that. Putin is no different he is thinking about his legacy he want to be immortal a great leader, money is secondary to that. The CCP gains it's power because it constantly tells people in China that they have been humiliated over centuries by the west by Japan and CCP has promised to get revenge for that humiliation so the people of China will accept anything to get that revenge hence they keep CCP in power. Germany felt humiliated after world war 1 that is how Hitler rose to power, money maybe involved my dude but in the end Humans want status, importance, respect and Pride more.
What nonsense? The main parties in the US are DEMOCRATIC and REPUBLICAN. Not the Money Party, not the Military Party. Real politics is based on values, everything else follows from them.
Noam is the greatest public intellectual to ever live. He will NEVER die, for such spirits - like Einstein and Shakespeare - are immortal. He's also the greatest linguist of all time.
Chomsky is one of the best human beings to exist and I'm thankful he's still here after 93 years. He's been able to teach so many such important information over the decades. 'Manufacturing Consent' is still one of his best. Anyone who hasn't read up on it or watched it should.
Maybe it is better not to idolize people in position? I saw some other comments which comment on “how amazing” Chomsky is at his current age. But that almost sounds perverse when you admire someone for their alleged intellectual achievement. What if you had only limited amount of some kind of life saving medication and you had a choice to give it ti the 93 year old Noam Chomsky or to some person who may not have been as lucky or had the opportunity to be an academic. It sounds like you would save Chomsky and say “fuck you, die” to another person.
"I have a book called Manufacturing Consent" hahaha, he said it so casually. Absolute legend. That's like Tolstoy casually saying "I have a book called War and Peace"
Spot on. Excellent comment dude. Noam Chomsky is a thinking man's esteemed global elder. A truely outstanding thinker. I am preparing myself for his passing I'll be devastated. In 500 years there will be statues of him.

One of Chomsky's great values is that he concentrates on the really important questions and issues and does not let himself get distracted by non-essential or unanswerable questions or issues (so often invoked by propagandists and superficial journalists). It doesn't matter if Putin or the neocons are "mad," "demented," "evil" or even "well-intentioned good guys". Look at what they do and say and what the logical consequences are for humanity.

40:30 Noam is so right about how things started changing drastically in the late 70's early 80's. In 1978 I was 13 living off a highway in Independence Missouri. All that was on a mile stretch of highway by our house was a small quik mart convenience store. As 1978 went by I saw an explosion of fast food places being built. Hardees, Wendy's, 7-11, Quick Trip, Pizza Hut and a couple of others all within half a mile of each other. A year earlier I had been living in a very small town of 12,000 people and the next year in a much bigger city and literally saw the conversion of locally owned stores to franchise stores in the blink of an eye. 30 years later I saw documentary footage of once Chess champion turned crazy person Bobby Fischer walk around aimlessly in 1978, you can see all the myriad of franchise food places being built in the background. At the time all these shiny new stores seemed fantastic but ultimately it looks like it was the beginning of a nightmare..and I'm just talking fast food joints.

I'm not sure why you'd make that comment, I dunno your leanings but would you say to me that a better introduction to politics would be for example, Rachel Maddow? The Young Turks? God forbid Hasan Piker? So many spinsters doing so little research, hell even as cheerleaders they do a shit job. Take a look at any of Noam's older lectures, for example his reflection on the Clinton era and NAFTA, the lectures on the US response to 9/11, probably my favorites were his consistent analysis of how unions have been affected by US policy. Um arguing against freedom of speech. Arguing for essentially disappearing people for not taking vaccines. Arguing for narrative control. Arguing for forcing vaccines on people. Putting them in camps. Etc.
If you were more insightful rather than being a complementary kiss buttsky you would notice he has quite a few flighty featherweight guests. This one was a good example.
Definitely one of the best conducted interviews. Questions were succinct without leading. Answers were not interrupted to cause any digression. Chomsky basically states that US is the biggest threat to civilization on Earth.
To be clear, its the level of power the US has. However, power is a tool. Used correctly we can make the planet a harmonious oasis. Used badly and it's self destructive. Meaning we are the masters of our own destiny. Choose wisely!!!
@@chrisguevara Actually we are past choosing wisely. Chomsky is implying the choice has already been made for the last 40 years, the US has been obsessed with strengthening it's hegemony and this will not end well. no, we can't. 93 and he still thinks profits are the problem.
93 years old and he still thinks the US is the root of all evil. When will he realize that the US is not that important.
I heard China’s oldest critic that lived there died recently. Man, he lived to be 32 which is a pretty good.
No. He's senile and never was insightful.
@@truthmonster3290 what is in your opinion rather the problem?
I remember during my psychology degree which I took in 1974, nearly 50 years ago, Noam Chomsky was already considered a great intellect and leader in the field of linguistics. I have no words to describe my admiration for his continued words of wisdom that shine like a beacon through today's murk.

@Siłerka Well I'd hope so - vaccines of many kinds have been "enforced" for decades because doing so saves millions of lives.
@@GlennC789I think Pinkers stuff is getting better book kind of misses the mark.

You speak of the outer layers which are all leaves on the river that is the human/subconscious layer that Lex typically inquires on.
@@hammedmousavi2297 Yep I do agree that psychology of leaders can be a relevant factor in understanding the political actions that they take
It is also about Human things like Pride, Humiliation, Grandiosity, Legacy etc so it is not only about money, Putin maybe right now richest man on the world but he doesn't care about that he uses money to control people and he uses the money for Power.

As a Russian, I'm glad to hear such a truthful explanation of what was happening in Russia since the 90th from a non-Russian person. I'm waiting for people to help the hell in Ukraine to stop with the second Noam's plan - please, diplomats, talk, please, get joy. Please, don't push to a 'one side win' - it won't finish well. Bless Noam. Thank you, Lex.
Типичный русский. Думаешь можно легко забыть что произошло? Либо вы проиграете, либо "Запад", вы сами выбрали эту игру, вы сами поставили на кон всё, и сами же за это поплатитесь.
There is no winning side in this. The longer there is no negotiation the more everyone will lose.
@@MasterOfYoda I'm not talking about winning. I say the Russians have more to lose for their mistakes.
@@user123qweqw3 I mean, the russians will lose their lives and well being as usual. The americans will lose their global superpower status. The europeans and most of the rest of the world will have massive supply shortages and ukraine is already covered in smoking rubble. I don't think it's appropriate to be cheerful about a vague "X nation is going to suffer" concept especially since nation states are losing their meaning by the day.
I’m such a dunce head I have to listen to his lectures three or four times for them to fully sink in and to understand them. What a great intellect.

ESPECIALLY any fellow american watching, we must change the way we think as act globally. We are not the end all be all.
Absolutely incredible to think Noam is still so clear minded at 93! He uses logic and both historical and contemporary evidence to validate his position. Knowledge > Opinion
He kinda has a bad position and doesn't substantiate with enough evidence. For example he said SCOTUS goal was to make America white nationalists. Pretty big claim, pretty low evidence

I like how Lex takes Chomsky's age into account. Great respect for the craftsmanship of interviewing!
Respectful eastern European roots: respect for your elders. Everywhere but in anglo countries are the elderly addressed as "uncle" or "aunty" or "grandfather" or "grandmother" by younger people. I grew up calling my elders aunty and uncle (South African mother).
I can’t wait to pour a drink tonight and listen to this, while contemplating on humanity’s inability to walk a tightrope of life forever!
Don’t listen too much to Chomsky would be a better use of that malt whisky. Honestly the further from linguistics the guy got the less valuable his thoughts became.
@@Shm00ly Not listening is your strategy? Just close your ears with your hand and shout blahblahblah. That's the way forward, sure. Some would argue with facts or offer counters, but against Chomsky?
@@Shm00ly I really tried to convince myself that maybe it was old age, dementia, etc. that was the reason for his, well, demented takes on this war. But sadly he has always been like this.
Reminder he was a supporter of Serbia in the Yugoslav wars and kept going on and on being malicious about Srebenica not technically being a genocide appealing to his authority as a linguist (a highly ideological linguist at that, lol)... all because he hated NATO and couldn't fathom the US being justified intervening in a war. Not very academic and scientific of him to start from a conclusion and work his way from there.

@@coderentity2079 I think he listened, thus his statement. I also listened for years. His work on media manipulation and propaganda is valuable, if biased sometimes.
Though his stances on geopolitics, foreign affairs and such matters are outright delusional at best and outright disgusting at worst. Unsurprisingly the best global summary of the current state of geopolitics. Noam Chomsky, you've always been and still are my hero

Yuval is a eugenicist so I'm sure he's secretly hoping for nuclear war.
It'd be fascinating if this administration did something more than just blow money and weapons on Ukraine while never talking much about it. More than half our shit gets stolen and sole on the black market because we don't track anything or monitor its distribution...at all we send it and in our minds it made it to the front lines already. The tip of the iceberg being his popular book Manufacturing Consent, but it's not the full extent of the story.
