    Many commentators say that if he cared more about winning, he would have been a more accomplished player. However, I think he just have fun out there and give us a lot of entertainment. He is amongst the greatest, for this reason: The love to the game and entertainment. For Monfils it's not all about the trophies. Such a pleasure to watch him play! LEGEND!!!

      I'm not sure it's about caring about winning. Some players have an amazing talent, some of them have an incredible work capacity. Not everyone is able to endure Nadal's training regimen and keep the will to play. Monfils made the most of what he had and in the end, he's been (and still is) an amazing player (and on top of that, a great showman).

      He's 38 and still ranked 44th world. 2nd best ranked French player still on tour. Still wins a title per year average and has done well in some Grand Slam Tournaments. Yes his style is very energetic and emotion based so it's hard to be super consistent, and impossible to win Grand Slams with it but he's achieved loads in his career.

    This guy has athleticism that no other player has ever had. In addition, he is renowned for his very high technical qualities.
    On the other hand, he has no game strategy, no tactical sense and has never had any other ambition than to entertain the public when he decided to do something other than return the ball without wanting to win the point.
    He had many outbursts which endeared him to the public. He's also a very nice guy.
    I am sure that with seriousness, appropriate training, appropriate coaches, he could have won 1 or 2 grand slams and a few Masters 1000s.

That's what we want to watch

  • @TopeA8
    @TopeA8 2 месяца назад +14

    People are talking about him as if his career is some sort of failure. When Outside of the Big 3, I am actually thinking THIS is the one player I wished I had spent more time watching. Not Murray, not Thiem, not Tsitsipas, not Zverev, not even Alcaraz thus far. I regret not watching more of this guy. He earned his prize money, and he entertained the world. That means a lot MORE than people realise. Look at someone like Jay Jay Okocha in football and what he meant to the world. Don't underestimate the value of entertainment. It is actually the MAIN purpose of sports. The idea behind competition is that it would bring forth higher levels of entertainment, more strategic, more refined, more intense. Yes that is true, but entertainment in its raw, unadulterated form can sometimes be even MORE appealing than pure competition. Thus, you see that what Monfils has accomplished is much greater than you realise, it is just not as easily quantifiable. We live in a world where if you cannot quantify something, people think it doesn't exist. But we know it exists, because we are moved accordingly.

    Watching Monfils play reinforces the idea that technique limits the style and types of play you can make. Essentially, technique teaches you that "There is a proper way to hit the shot", and you should strive to put yourself in a position where you can hit shots with said technique.
    Monfils likes to go out of that box. It feels like he can hit any shots from any position, and it doesn't matter whether it looks good or bad, or whether the technique is most efficient or not.
    The ball comes, he hits it, and it's entertaining as hell!
    Love watching that guy play Tennis.
    Btw, I'm not saying technique is bad on its own. It can obviously be a great thing that allows you to get more consistency, power, and be more efficient with your shots, but it does limit the types of shots you can make (or allow yourself to make). Some of the stuff you see from Monfils you'll never see from 99% of the other Tennis players out there.
    (and ofc Monfils is able to hit shots with good technique as well. He's just not limited himself to that).
