For me, he is the greatest men's player in my lifetime of 72 years. He raised the bar the way the Williams sisters did on the women's side. Nadal and Djokovic had to get better to be able to beat Federer. No one I've ever watched had a mind for the game like Federer. His shot-making alone is extraordinary. His matches are the only tennis player's matches I'll rewatch and rewatch and rewatch on RUclips. I miss him so much. But hope he enjoys life after tennis. He was the greatest ambassador for tennis ever--his conduct, professionalism and respect for the game were all top flight.

I agree with the title 100%......but we shouldn't even look for somebody like Fed....he was that great....he was kind of a gift for us tennis fans that wanted to see somebody who has all the shots, all the strategic genius, then the entertainment factor and down to earth enough to be the favorite everywhere he showed up to play....there was only one Roger Federer...

"The one handed backhand is weaker than the two handed backhand", yet Wawrinka and Federer were consistently top 10 players, blowing through double handed players left and right. You can't get some of the amazing shots with a two handed backhand that you got from Federer and Wawrinka. Tsitsipas being the top back handed player is good, but nowhere near their levels.

Joker being 6 years younger had a distinct advantage. 6 Years in tennis is a lot. Fed didn't have many injuries but the Mono and back and knee injuries definitely set him back. Love Fed. Wow, I miss Federer. I got into playing tennis around 2001 when Fed was just becoming so great. I always loved the look of a one handed backhand and always gravitated to players who used the shot. You can now argue that Djoko is the GOAT but Federer is my favorite player of all time easily and certainly had the most aesthetically pleasing game of all time. Was fortunate enough to see him play several times in Cincinnati.

The younger Federer was the more evident his strokes were influenced by his idol Sampras. Lower racquet ready position especially, more fluid classic takeback, no windshield wiper forehand, less violent whip on both sides. Reminds us how Sampras was his idol, not his rival and Federer himself admitted he never lived and played with the reason in mind to break Sampras’ record. Unlike Novak who admitted his goal was to win the most slams. That Federer achieved 20 grand slams without such goals and just 14 slams as a target speaks for his immense talent, skill, and greatness. Like everything else about the big 3 Roger the king of the court, not just the baseline, did and accomplished many more things the other 2 WON’T EVEN DREAM OF DOING LET ALONE TRY while winning matches against both even well past his prime.

I’m waiting for tennis to grow large enough including commercially, enough that the best of U.S. athletes choose tennis and not only basketball, baseball, football or even golf where all the men’s sports money resides. Maybe someday we’ll see a 6’ 6” or even bigger, faster, skilled and athletic Jordan-like, Magic-like, Lebron-like tennis player with a Federer-like powerful all-court game. I would like to see how today’s defensive baseline players avoid getting devoured by this velociraptor on a tennis court.
When Tiger Woods, an elite athlete, arrived and this happened in golf and he destroyed Augusta National Golf course at the ‘97 Masters they soon added rough and lengthened the course. Many other golf courses could not be lengthened and were rendered useless for professional golf. Again I’m curious and waiting to see results if/when someone/something similar would happen with the limited confines of a tennis court.

    Will someone explain:
The standard comment to a dropshot is on the lines of clever, nicely done, brilliant and so on, whilst the type of shot at 2:17 is generally just called cheeky, as if almost immoral.
Both do generally the same thing - leading the opponent on by disguising the shot selection for the longest time.
Same thing with under-arm serve - it's a good tool to use, sparingly, to keep your opponent guessing.
