Tempted by opportunities in Russia and the EU, one in three Moldovans have left the country to seek work. As communities back home struggle to cope with the exodus, where does the future for Moldova lie?
Since 2014, Moldovans have moved freely within the EU, prompting a sharp rise in economic migration. Raya is one of the 40,000 Moldovans supporting her family from France. "I’ve found cleaning work...that’s how I earn my daily bread", she says. The money earned by those like Raya now accounts for 25% of Moldova's GDP - "without money from abroad", says Raya's mother, "we wouldn’t be able to survive". Yet communities have been left desolate by the exodus, and child trafficking is rife amongst youngsters with absent parents. Dan, whose parents left him in a children's home to work abroad, is grateful: "It was more difficult before; we didn’t have any money at all. Now, since they went away, life seems easier". Yet with the future of migration in the EU unclear, will the sacrifice have been worthwhile?

Sorry for my english, i am from Moldova, and the images that you see in this video are not the hardest reality of my country. Official in Moldova live 4 millions citizens, for real it's just 2 millions, because 60% are in Russia, other 30% in Europe, and 10% in USA. I watched this video with tears, it's so hard to see your country dying.

Your English is perfect. It is indeed very very sad to see this. Moldovan people deserve better. It must be heartbreaking for all these people to have to leave their children behind. If there wasn't such mistrust between Europe and Russia things would surely change for the better.

Crime is pretty high. What differentiates it is that it's population is older than other third world nations, and so it has less young people in the risk zone for crime, mits also has emigration as an solution to it's problems.

Romania has exactly the same problems as Moldova: poverty, corruption and depopulation. Since 1991 Romania loses up to 1.13% of its population every single year. Romania already lost more than 4 million people since late 80s. Imagine its future after unification with such a poor country as Moldova. It is madness.

I moved to spain, where i lived with my grandma for a year and then the rest of my family came along. It's not that i don't like spain, in fact, it's a very beautiful country, but i wish from the bottom of my heart that one day we can return to moldova with the rest of my family, and not having relatives across italy, france, russia, canada or even japan. Were you people asleep for the last seventy years. At least us eastern Europeans experienced Communism at the end of a Russian bayonet. But you Venezuelans elected your Communist Government. I know, the idea of taking (stealing) from the rich to give to you sounded really good. The problem is, that once you get rid of the doers, the inventors, the commercial entrepreneurs, Nothing gets made because theres no one there that knows anything.
So now, you guys will experience that too. You better pray that the US does something to save your hungry boney asses, because it never gets better. Why isn't there a revolution going on in Venezuela?

    • @teddygonzalez87
      @teddygonzalez87 5 лет назад +9

From 1952 to 1958 our country had a right wing dictatorship which produced more wealth and progress than any other government before, however Russian communism already had its eyes in Latin America and with the help of Cuba "Social Democracy" was first introduced after 1958. Every government from there on, inherited the financial "bonanza" of Perez Jimenez' government and with the oil boom, it was the perfect scenario to start wasting money on social programs and populism took control for over 40 years. Obviously in the 90's this model wasn't longer sustainable and when Social Democracy showed its true face, it was already too late. Poverty rates had already skyrocketed and people were looking for a Mesias. That's when Hugo Chavez came in, with his beautiful words and promises he managed to seduce a whole country that had fallen into the socialist trap.
I get your point but what you fail to understand is the power of communism and how it became rooted in Latin American minds. It was all prepared almost half a century ago. The reason there is not a revolution right now, it's because half of the people fled seeking for a better life. My family was smart enough to forsee this and left the country years before the shit hit the fan. The other half of the country who stayed, is just busy making lines for food every day.
USA is not going to intervene because they are the puppet of the original creators of communism.

      +Notebookguy?
You ask why other countries dont open factories in Moldova (MD):
1.) Countries dont run factories in a capitalistic society - thats private business
and that leads us to topic
2.) One of the main problems in MD is corruption, you can buy (bribe) nearly all and everybody in MD.
You thought you bought some soil in MD, ercted a little factory and wan to do business now:
Wrong - somebody paid the guy at the city hall whre your soil is registrated (Kataster): Its no more your - it belongs to somebody else - you sold it a few weeks ago
So you go to court - the judge is bribed to. You have no chance.
Some mold. criminals tried to do this with a BIG german company in Balti:
They had no chance - only after the german government intervened and protested the company was given back their properties.
And now imagine you run a company with - lets say 50 employees only:
      Forget it.
Before the Moldovians dont do their homework, fight corruption and stop stealing the country has no chance.

That's not a comparable case. Unlike Moldova, Estonia could rely on a capitalist powerhouse to prop its economic development, namely Finland. Even now hundreds of thousands of Estonians commute every day to Helsinki to work manual jobs. Moldova only has Romania which doesn't boast nearly as much capital or political prestige as Finland does in Estonia-most importantly because Romania had just as hard a struggle during communism (in fact, in the '80s Moldova might actually have even been _wealthier_ than Romania).

Far as I'm aware, it's about 20,000 people going from Tallin to Helsinki every Monday. I just made two mistakes, that's all. And yes, I know perfectly well the name of the Estonian capital (the worst I do is mess up whether the "l" or "n" should go double but I dare say that's not a major issue) and it was nothing more than a particular choice of phrase.
No need to get so defensive. Almost every former Eastern Bloc country suffers from either mass emigration or mass commuting to more developed countries. Whatever happened to Poland is of no concern. Latvia has proportionately more people living abroad than inside of it because they can't commute to a wealthy nation as easily as you guys. If you swapped places on the map, you would be dealing with the exact same thing.
And no, I'm not revoking my statement that Estonia owes much of its post-communist development to the inflows of capital from Finland. Finland is also Estonia's top import and export partner.

I don't know if this is intentional with handpicked days of production or if it's random, but it most definitely is a strong effect that really influence the viewer towards getting gloomy vibes. And this goes so well together with the whole theme of a "dying country" basically. Brilliant documentary.

The difference is that Bulgaria is in the EU and most of the friends I have met out there have lived and worked in Western Europe and sent money home, Bulgaria is developing now although the rural areas are exactly like shown in the video, I wonder what the future of Moldova will be.

They visited me when they could 12 years ago the internet wasn’t a reality like nowadays and I only heard them by the telephone, rarely because was to expensive. They never give up work hard like the Moldavians do, some times 12/13 hours a day 7 days a week.

It is the same all over Eastern Europe. Over 6 million Romanians left the country over the last years. Romania is part of the EU and the situation is not as bad as in Moldova, but we are not far from that. We have a whole generation of children who grew up separated from their parents. The situations presented in this film are not foreign to me, but it breaks my heart to see Moldova struggling so much. They are our brothers, we speak the same language and for many of us they are still a part of Romania. Moldova is a country extremely rich in resources, but it looks like someone has a vested interested to keep it in poverty.

It is a good thing teaching your younger generation speak foreign languages. If you happen to speak French, Dutch or German, there are good job oppertunities. If you search work abroad to be able to have abetter life for you and your family, have a look at bi-lingual jobs in Bulgaria :) Mostly in contact centers or IT support

In 1993, Moldova had a referendum on whether to unify with Romania or remain an independent country and more than 90% voted to remain independent. IMO, that was a major mistake because Romania now is in the EU and while not prosperous, is now an emerging nation. Moldova, on the other hand, isn't even fit to join the Third World. I wonder if Moldovans regret not voting for unification.

One can't stay unimpressed of the number of idiotic comments bellow. When a nation struggle to succeed due to the incompetence of the government and its sick desire to get rich to the detriment of its own citizens, they must be helped. Every single country is trying to prove one another its power, why don't the simply show their strength by supporting one in a need? They are our European brothers, they deserve to be helped!
Don't forget that not a single empire succeeded to withstand throughout millennia and their fall was felt by all the other nations in the world. But with a little help, they could reborn just like a phoenix. Luckily there are enough examples over here.

Of course you are right, but unless humanity gives up its tribal allegiances and becomes "one tribe" (which I don't think will ever happen), this is the way of the world.

This is a very sad video! It was so heartbreaking to see the young boy's face and also the teenagers worrysome faces. I am from Brazil and I truly wish I could do something to help the people there. Anyone knows how's the situation now in Moldova? I wish I knew how the boy and his so caring grandmother are. This video was made 5 years ago. All my love to the Moldovan people.

Poorest country in Europe, also one of the smallest. Probably should reunite with Romania since they seem to have a real leadership deficit. It will take a real leader to turn things around here. With passion, power and a good heart, this can be turned around.

I see great potential in this country especially tourism . don't loose hope .. trust in your abilities keep your culture which your ancestors have passed on to you after several decades or centuries . Enjoy and cherish them and try to find way to get rid of this situation . If you see problem in you country don't desert it but join the government and correct the current situation. I wish you and all Maldivian all the best !

As mexican i understand, that people leaves their country for better life, most of the guilty is because goverment in their native country is corrupted, Moldova should make commercial agreements with their neighbors, and be less controlled by Russians, Big countries always destroy the small ones, hope Moldova wake up and survive to all this.

Here in Brazil we also suffer from corruption and it is complicated ... But there I think life is more difficult because it is a small country and with little infrastructure ... Mexico and Brazil are regional powers with a great infrastructure ... I live in São Paulo and here are a lot of opportunities just as in Mexico City I believe

Wagner Rodrigues this is the same throughout the world though, Russia has immigration from Eastern Europe e.g. Moldova and Central Asian countries like Kazakhstan... Then Western Europe has immigration from the Middle East, Pakistan, India etc, USA has Mexico and Americas immigration... Everyone is moving north it seems, but historically these countries were colonies of the now host country

Yeah but at least your countries don't have such pisspoor birth rates as we do here in Europe (although I know that Brazil and Chile don't have the best either). Around here, whites simply never have babies above the replacement rate-if a country shows positive, it's only because of the non-European immigrants, mostly blacks and Muslims. And things are even worse in the former Eastern Bloc (although at least in Poland things are slightly mitigated by the incessant inflow of Ukrainians). Once a country with a lousy economy depopulates, it simply starts dying. In Moldova by 2050 the elderly will probably have to be evacuated from their villages or else risk simply starving to death.

When I was 2 years old my parents moved from Moldova to Canada. I have other relatives that moved to France, Italy, Belgium, the UK, the US, Romania and the Netherlands. My mom lived in the countryside and each time we go visit my grandparents who are still there it's a reminder for what my parents fled and the sacrifice that my parents took abandoning friends and family for me and my future sister's futures. All my heart goes to my fellow Moldovans.

India has a similar situation, but there's plenty to eat, loads of Land to cultivate and there's a lot of rich people too. One of the highest number of Billionaires in the world, after US and China.

Chisinau, and Balti, and Cahul, and bunch of other cities are developing as well, but there is a socialism-related problem: most expect to be employed, while jobs aren't as many or decently payed.
20 years ago if you told anyone he/she could become a millionaire just by Farming, they'd laugh in your face, because of the deep preconceptions about agriculture and many other "best practices" which are not being updated already.
I'm deeply sorry that the Government is too short-sighted to provide updated global data on different business types (and trade opportunities valid for Moldova), and of course, cases of corruption and bureaucracy scare people even further to "work hard" (and smart).
