  • With the NHL considering changes to the 3 on 3 overtime format soon, I wanted to highlight why this is a problem and this game between the Washington Capitals and the Carolina Hurricanes is a perfect example.
    In this video, I break down how 3 on 3 OT has changed over the years and why it needs to change.

      For sure. I think if you eliminated the shootout there would be no reason to dick around like this. Maintaining posession to regroup and get the right chance migth still be a thing, which I'm fine with because it's a temporary thing. No third point if nobody gets it within 10 minutes would provide the teams with a sense of urgency and that 10th minute would see teams taking some crazy chances.

      Its not a bad idea, but the NHL had this before going to the shoot out. Coaches would rather take the tie than lose the point so the overtime was a non-event. You have to get punitive and say no points are awarded if no one wins the game. That way you have to play to win to earn points.

      I'm cool with implementing a tie game, with each team getting 1 point. However, I feel like there should be some kind of incentive to try and win. In OT, if you win, you get both points, and the losing team gets nothing. This way, there's always a point left on the table. Both miss on a point for tying in OT, and the losing team does not get a pity point for losing in OT. Winner takes all.

  • @Sultimate93
    @Sultimate93 8 месяцев назад +24

    I feel like a shot clock would break the flow of overtime games and would prefer they don't implement it. If a shot clock violation is just a stoppage in play and faceoff then a lot of teams would decide to just hold the puck and take the faceoff rather than go for a low percentage shot that gives up possession. If you want to play a low event game you can still hold possession to waste clock and if you go over it's not a big loss. It'll just make overtime take longer by forcing more faceoffs without necessarily bringing more rush chances and back and forth.
    If instead you make a shot clock violation a 2 minute delay of game penalty then it's likely to be way too harsh. If you need to register a shot on goal or a change of possession, then you're punishing players for trying to pick corners, even if they're shooting the puck a lot. You're also punishing them for winning races and puck battles. Imagine having a dominant offensive zone shift with a slot shot that hits the post and a rebound put just wide ending with a defensive zone faceoff and penalty kill. Seems really unfair, and if you change it to shot attempts then you'll just have players shoot intentionally way wide so it wraps all the way into the defensive zone where one of their players or goalie can collect the puck to reset the clock.
    If they're going to make OT changes, I'd prefer an over and back rule. It would encourage D to be more aggressive attacking players at the blue line, while a shot clock encourages passive defenses attempting to block or dissuade shots. It also doesn't completely neuter teams that are weaker on the rush, since you can still play a possession game in the offensive zone. I'm sure it would have it's own problems, but I think it'd be both easier to adjust to and less disruptive than a shot clock.

However, what you can do is implement the same rules as in basketball where once you cross the middle of the ice you cannot go back. This would be a good rule for OT. Tihs would mean teams would have no choice but to spend the time in the OZ. Shot clocks or clocks in any shape or form will not work. Absolutely no to the concept of a shot clock. To succeed in OT, puck possession is crucial, but you only need to make a minor tweak and you can look to basketball's "over and back" rule (or half court violation). Once the puck carrying team crosses into the attacking zone on side (past the blue line), they can only move the puck in the offensive half of the rink; pass or carry the puck back into your half of the ice without the other team touching the puck and the refs whistle the play dead and you get a faceoff in the previously attacking team's zone, like icing. If the attacking team feels the need to retreat back from the blue line, the space to control the puck is much smaller, so they are either forced to put a shot towards the net or risk the defending team gaining possession either through a takeaway or the attacking team crossing into their half of the ice. Seems like it would be simpler to rule on as well, it's not line the offside rule and skate position--it's about who is responsible for the puck crossing the center line.

    Here's some brainstorming;
    1) Modify the points system. Make every game worth three points to encourage teams to go for the regulation win. OT wins will divide the three points the same way they do now, two to the winner and one to the loser.
    2) Modify OT. Add two minutes of game time. The threat of fatigue will encourage teams to try for the win.
    3) Either eliminate the shootout or modify it by allowing a backchecker to take off from the other goal line once the puck is touched. If he disrupts the approach, round over. This will stop the slo-mo dangling displays we've seen in recent years. Penalties by tge backchecker count as shootout goals.

    hockey used to be 5 on 5 in OT and ended in a tie. at least it was real hockey. 3 on 3 is for kids on a pond. if its real, its in the playoffs. ive had enough with this stupid OT shit. how to avoid this? 3 points for regulation win. 2 points for OT win 1 point for OT loss. but that wont change either. to think the league has to gain fans by a 5 or less minute overtime that might not happen does not make sense.

    I'm a big fan of 3v3 as it's definitely the most exciting way to determine the winner of a game. Even the shootout, though a lot of people hate it, is a super exciting way to decide the winner from a viewing perspective especially if you are there watching it in-person. That being said I'm sure most fan bases feel snake-bitten whenever they lose in the shootout. A shot clock like basketball is interesting, but I agree with the top comment that the flow of the game shouldn't be disrupted. So to avoid excessive whistles, maybe the NHL should invoke a 'Possession Clock' where possession must willingly be given up every 25-30 seconds, with a shot on goal resetting a team's clock until the defending team regains possession. Some teams might abuse this by icing the puck, so perhaps the NHL should also remove icing in the 3v3 Overtime.
    Just some dumb thoughts I had haha. Even if I don't have the right solution, I'm sure there are ways to make 3v3 even more fun and enjoyable to watch.

    Each team will use their abilities as they see fit. If patience is required to create a scoring chance, that is what they will do. I never want to see overtime scripted like a WWF match by someone who wants to see “action”. Let the teams trying to win a game decide what is best for them, not what is best for sports writers.

    Three on three is as lame as last years stupid ‘all star’ game with the stupid, childish acting that even pre-schoolers would find boring and jump off a cliff.
    5min overtime is like pre-mature ejac….over before you know it.
    Overtime,

    Shootout? Needs a defender to chase the shooter, becoming a break-away competition.

    All kidding aside, I don't know any other major sport which changes the basic rules of the game for overtime. Going to 4 on 4 was stupid, going to 3 on 3 was stupider and all these ideas about a shot clock take the game further down the same stupidity path.
    All you have to do is tell coaches 0 points are awarded for a tie. Ie. to earn points you have to win the game. Teams would have to actually play to finish a game rather than banking cheap points.

    List of my preferred options:
    1. Eliminate OT completely. Tie is a valid game result in any other sport, and in many other hockey leagues around the world.
    2. If for whatever reason you want OT, make it 4 on 4... 3 on 3 is too volatile, so of course nobody wants to make mistake
    3. If for whatever reason you want 3 on 3 (*) leave it be and reap what you sow. New tactics will evolve.
    * if the reason why you wanted 3 on 3 was that it's more dynamic, well, now it's not, so go bak to 4 on 4

    Once u cross the red line with possession and exit the line u cannot reenter with possession, until the other team has had a reasonable opportunity to claim and control the puck, if u take it back fair game.
    If you dump it at the line ie for line changes or dump in purposes and u get control of it again cuz the other team was sleeping then so be it.

    I don’t mind it. Puck possession takes skill. 3 on 3 ot is very European. Puck possession is everything. If we are gonna change a rule I’d rather see a 20 second statue of limitations on offsides challenges. If it doesn’t directly lead to a goal then the goal stands. Any breakdown in ot could lead to 3 or 4 exciting odd man rushes, so watching players have to play perfect hockey to avoid that is fun for me 🤷🏼‍♂️

I don't know. Not being able to leave the zone once you enter might be somewhat interesting. Have to see it in action first though.
