      One of my favorite goaltender moments ever was in my final year of midget (high school hockey in Canada for all you American's). One of my bestfriends was the goalie on my team and the first game of the year he decided to charge out from his crease to play the puck, the player on the other team absolutely steamrolled him sending his helmet flying as he completed a front flip from the hit then just casually flung his long hair back as he skated over to our bench laughing while all our players on the ice went after the guy who hit him. He was the best goalie in our league and there was quite a skill difference between him and our backup so we got pretty defensive about anyone trying to go after him and he was a large part of why we ended up winning the league that year. We still laugh about that hit and the casual hair fling to this date just over ten years later ..... and he too believes goalies should be fair game while out of their crease to play the puck

    The league has it clearly defined. Goalies are not fair game just because they're outside their crease.
    Rule 8.5 - Interference with the Goaltender
    Goaltender interference refers to any attacking player who, by means of their stick or body, interferes with or impedes the movements of the goaltender by actual physical contact. While incidental contact with the goaltender may occur, attacking players must make an effort to avoid contact in all circumstances. The onus is always on the attacking player and players who do not make an effort to avoid the goaltender must be penalized.
    Protection of the Goaltender: A Goaltender is not ‘fair game’ just because they are outside their goal crease. A penalty under this rule will be called where an opposing player makes unnecessary contact with the goaltender anywhere on the ice. Likewise, Referees should be alert to penalize goaltenders for infractions they commit within the vicinity of their goal.

    One of the reasons the league trys to protect goal keepers is that their equipment is meant to protect them from flying pucks where as a forward or defencemans equipment is designed to protect him from punishing body checks. His equipment is tightly fited just for this job, whereas as a keepers equipment is made to allow free movement. You also have to allow for the fact that a keeper can not move as quickly as a regular player, so the keeper is always going to come off a lot worse because of the kinetic energy difference. These are the reasons they try and protect keepers.

    • @jeanjacques9365
      @jeanjacques9365 8 месяцев назад

      For open ice hits it really isnt making much of a difference outside of the helmet that disadvantages the goalies tho it's mostly the assumption they wont get hit that hurts them because idk about newer players but the equipment is really not that much like there is padding on the shoulders, the elbows and for upper body thats about it if anything goalies just lean back from the check so they end up on the receiving end just as any player would they are playing against players that had to thrive in bodycheck opposition since they are 13-14 while they never have thats all.

    Goalie here - we shouldn't be iniating contact, and players shouldn't be able to check us. Main reason is that the leg pads only let you move cleanly in certain planes of motion, so you really can't adjust your body to brace for contact in the same way. It's like hitting someone whose knees were ever so slightly tied together.

    The reason the goalie isn’t free game is because they don’t have the same level of protection. The game would be worse if we more for taking hits instead of blocking shots. We’d also have to change team comps to allow more goalies in the lineup. If a skater or two gets hurt in a game, there are at least still 16 other skaters to use. We’d have to allow at least 5 or 6 goalies be on the bench.

    • @jeanjacques9365
      @jeanjacques9365 8 месяцев назад

      pretty sure the point is more about the goalies staying in the net than it is about really hitting the goalie like in the example there is a collision but not real body check one just braced for the impact. You cant assume you will never be touched outside of the paint now that doesnt mean its free bodycheck just that player dont have to back off from reaching the puck you. play the puck and if a collision occurs (without charging then thats part of the game)

    it seems fair to me that the goalie can't be checked, since it is also super risky to come out like that. any misstep is almost a sure goal. and goalies regularly come out of the crease to cut down an angle, wouldnt be fair to hit them. seems fairly balanced, it's just that a lot of players don't expect stuff like flying poke checks anymore so sometimes they're caught sleeping. On the other hand, I think Markstrom is notorious for coming out to play the puck and letting an easy goal in, so it works both ways.

The Lomberg call, for example, he turned his shoulder into it. It wasn't a simple check. If he just bodies into the goaltender, that doesn't get called.

    That game misconduct was a piss poor call. Even for protecting the goalie. He didn't lean into the hit at all.

    I mean, Lomberg is taking strides right into Raanta, the definition of a charge. Lomberg doesn't have the puck. I think I counted 6 full strides toward Raanta before running into him at full speed. Any player skating out like Raanta getting run over at a full sprint from Lomberg, would be charged. This would still be charging, even if it wasn't a goalie. Just because the goalie comes out to play it, any player can see what the goalie is doing, and Lomberg charged him as hard as you can possibly charge someone. Also, multiple boarding plays that you believe are "fair game". Plenty of goalies are physical. I didn't see the Price hit in this video. That's one of the best goalie hits ever.
    I get your complaints, but the Raanta play is a clear charging. What hockey are you watching? You don't get to just run into a player at full speed. It's a unique scenario, and goalies are always involved, but you seem to not understand that that is still charging. You jump over the goalie or go around. I played forward, then goalie, then D, then forward now that I'm old. Players don't get to charge the goalie coming out to play it.
    If that is a player blocking the empty net at the end of the game, and he steps out a bit and touches the puck and then gets steamrolled by Lomberg at top speed? Do you think that is charging? Or is the responsibility on the player standing in front of the empty net? Lomberg is allowed to plow over that defenseman reaching out to play the puck in front of the empty net?
    It's a charge dude.

    The nebulous goalie impunity impugns my otherwise pure pride in the position. I believe: I keep out of trouble and scrums because my boys “have to” fight for me. And I think: If I’m going to play the puck, I better play it like a player. There will be no cheapshit, crying, or flopping… Just saves.

    Anywhoo, goalies can't be checked as if they are the 6th guy. They don't do hits training like the other 5 guys. Maybe they should 🤔

    Should be lacrosse rules if the goalie comes out of the crease he’s just another man. However I understand the NHL Prioritizing protecting goalies their gear isn’t designed to take hits nor their skates and edges lacrosse goalies can come out and play the ball But they are on feet and have massive amounts of padding goalies only have padding on the front end with nothing on the back leaving them very vulnerable to many different types of injuries

    It's so dangerous and risky for a goalie to skate forward and try to out-race a skater. You really gonna take a car crash standing still? The skater is moving forward at full speed and you're coming to a stop or sliding. That Kochetkov play behind the net is what they should be doing but most of those goalies getting smoked abused their "privileges".

  • @scottykomer9992

    Think of what targets goalies would be if you were allowed to hit them out of their crease. If they were fair game it would be a huge incentive to go after the other team's goalie. Also whats "out of the crease" defined as?. Whats where they make half of their saves. So are they fair game then... if their stick touches the puck in a save. So you can word it as "free to hit when they play the puck" but how to define that besides how they hold their stick. iTs just a giant can of worms and hard to define. And they'll be crazy targets... which is bad news for an already injury prone position.

    Goalies already don't have the same protections outside their crease. Only an idiot would suggest removing those protections entirely by making them fair game.
    It comes down to inertia. Goalies are often stationary. If moving, they're usually not moving very fast, especially compared to, say, a zone crashing forward. This virtually guarantees they will be on the losing end of any collisions, putting them at risk for serious injury.

    I always thought the rule was if the goalie comes out of his crease and plays the puck he is fair game to check, although most players do not check the goalie as the puck has usually been played, or just out of respect

    • @Floydos85
      @Floydos85 8 месяцев назад

      Well, it is hard, because when goalie is playing the puck, he is more vulnerable than regular player (mask, pads, gloves), different skate blades. So you cannot prepare to be hit as regular player. I think the hitting goalie should be monitored in same fashion that are monitored hits player to player.
