I have never seen a penalty shot like this

  • Tonight as the Ottawa Senators hosted the Carolina Hurricanes we saw a penalty shot unlike any other I've seen before. Brady Tkachuk up against Pyotr Kochetkov. If these guys have anything in common, its that they're both a bit unhinged so what could possibly go wrong? Kochetkov made a diving poke check on the penalty shot that sent Tkachuk flying into the boards and he was NOT happy. The two squared up but refs got in the way and in the end, a penalty shot resulted in a 10 minute misconduct for Brady in just a wild sequence! I cover it all in todays NHL hockey video!

    Kochetkov has thrown a poke check in almost every game he's played this season. He's very aggressive, doesn't just sit back in net, and frankly it suits the Hurricanes well. He doesn't have the best save pct this year, but he's denying shots before they're taken.

      @@rhys.ladouceur4107 It's a highly undervalued aspect of goal tending. A goalies job isn't to make saves. It's to prevent goals. If you can do that by blocking a cross crease pass, or poke checking, or angling a guy to a point where he has nothing to shoot at and just holds onto the puck those situations are just as good as saves.

      A goalie isn’t allowed to intentionally drop his stick in the goal crease. It is part of the interference rule. (Please do not argue the stick wasn’t dropped in the crease, but right out of it. A ref can’t have that type of eye sight. It was close enough).
      Allegedly, Koch does this often, and was probably warned by the refs much like Murray was warned last year about knocking the net off. That’s why it was a penalty. ‘Throwing the stick’ was just the Refs way of clarifying what the interference was.

      A little harsh of a declamation. From what I've seen of both Tkachuks, they definitely have their dad's grit and short fuse. However, Matthew is by far a more complete player overall, whereas, Brady is a hothead who should not have the C on his jersey for his continued tantrums and poor sportsmanship. Being fiery and playing with passion is one thing, but his conduct just reflects poorly on his teammates, and he doesn't represent them well. If Brady cut that routine out, and funneled that energy into playing better hockey, Ottawa might actually be in contention this season.

    I've said many times if goalies started being more aggressive w/the poke check players wouldn't know what to do. Wedgewood did it a few nights ago on Kustnesov* in a shoot out, it was a full poke check but he did poke at him as he got in close and the dude shot wide. Hopefully coaches start picking up on this and training goalies. All the fancy moves these players are making they have to look down at the puck to keep track of it and it's the perfect time to be aggressive.

      @@richardprescott5939 Well it's not like back in the 80s they did it all the time but a player puts his head down then yea you do it, it also keeps the players guessing because now they know a goalie isn't going to challenge them. That is why Kutznetsov was so successful he was able to get in very close w/goalies basically just backing up too far and he had a lot of shoot at from just a few feet out. You look at that play and you see Wedgewood not back in as much as nearly all goalie does and he holds his ground and then pounces. Could of probably done it a little earlier if he did a full poke check but I get they don't really teach that so it's going to take some time for goalies to learn it and use it when needed not always.

As someone mentioned already dropping your goalie stick in front of the net is the same idea as leaving it laying across the crease when pulling the goalie. Also, the point of a penalty shot is that the player was interfered with and did not get a fair shot at the net. Which is pretty much what happened on the penalty shot. The goaltender may have been intending to poke check him but it was horribly timed and he basically just ended up sliding at his feet.

    If Brady had his head up and saw Kochetkov coming out that far, the natural response would be to try to swing the puck to Kochetkovs left and try to get it around him to an open net. Unfortunately Brady didnt have his head up and didnt see him out that far and so didnt try to move the puck around him, thus making the poke check connect with his skate.

    The poke check isn't the issue. The issue is whether you can aim for a player's skate - not the puck. Competition committee might have to address.

      The difference is the rules. The goalkeeper may attempt to stop the shot in any manner except by throwing his stick or any object, or by deliberately dislodging the goal, in which case a goal shall be awarded. There are 3 things a goalie can not do : Leave the crease before the shooter touches the puck, Throw something, or intentionally dislodge the net.

    Carolina always outplays Ottawa and figured they could rattle them easily, honestly I saw a very purposeful stick drop. I saw a poke check that did not go for the pick but for the skate.
    I guess any team would be happy to have a goalie either way that kinda swagger, but he’s certainly a dirty one who is confidently doing very dubious things only a goalie could get away with.

  • @maximal2878

    Can anyone tell me why this is legal? He’s going right at his foot with his stick, no intention to play the puck whatsoever. He stops it with his body but just spears his foot. That’s more then dangerous isn’t it?

      @@solarion9802 I‘m not at all a sens fan, I’m just following the NHL and don’t even have a favorite team. I actually kinda dislike tkatchuk but this play just looks wrong.
      And ofc it’s dangerous, we’ve seen many injuries of players tripping over a stick and going into the boards real bad. Just because he’s not targeting the head or so this still can be a penalty right?😅
      His only intention was to get the stick to his foot and maybe prevent the puck from moving over but on every situation anywhere on the ice this is 100% a tripping penalty. You can’t deny that.

  • @klazman7757

    From ex-goalie perspective, Tkachuk kinda did this to himself. Just dont have your eyes on the puck. Not every goalie will just wait for you to skate into 10 cm distance and let you do your thing.
    Like many people mentioned, that pokecheck is not about hitting players skates, but to cover one potentialy vurnerable side. This move is basically a huge flip, and mostly depending on how fast can a player react to it.
    When it comes to the "throwing stick" issue, i looked it up on 0.25 speed like 10 times. We can see that Tkachuk had half of the net completely emty, so i asume that goalie dropped the stick, trying to get himself there as much as he could. However, Tkachuk didnt shoot, instead dodged to the right.

    • @ajpdeschenes
      @ajpdeschenes 9 месяцев назад +2

      Maybe Tkachuk was ooking at the puck, but as a goalie too, I'm 95% sure Kochetkov was aiming at the skate and not the puck. Not that it's something I would do, I just don't see how he could have his eyes on the puck and throw his stick in that direction if he's not aiming at the skate.

    • @klazman7757
      @klazman7757 9 месяцев назад +1

      Respect your opinion, Kochetkov seems like a type of goalie who would do this intentionaly, im just asuming from my own experience. Im honestly not even that suprised about people arent happy about it. Imho the weirder thing was calling a penalty shot in a first place. Idk what is your experience with dropping stick in these situations, but i was doing it very often, not even thinking about where did i drop it.

    • @ajpdeschenes
      @ajpdeschenes 9 месяцев назад

      @@klazman7757 I agree with you on that, the drop didn't seem intentional. For a while, I dont know why I had developed the bad reaction of throwing the stick in some desperate situations. But beside that, curiously enough, I think I have probably a save percentage of 1.000 when dropping the stick! I become so alert in these moments 😅
