Congrats to Sam Gagne on being part of the 2 longest win streaks in history on 2 different teams. (17 game win streak in Columbus, now a 14 game win streak in edmonton)
As an Oilers fan this shit has been an absolute pleasure to watch.. I don’t even care about the win streak.. I want them to play this well come playoffs
Your teams is playing teams that are not even near the playoffs. SOOOOO Are they really playing that good? Not one of the top teams played in those 16 wins.
@@jasonwhitney5136 You have no idea what you're talking about. Philadelphia, Detroit, Toronto, LA, and the New York Rangers are all good teams. All teams also get stretches where the schedule is easier than other times during the season, yet they don't get win streaks like this. If you think a 16 game win streak counts for nothing, you're delusional
@@jasonwhitney5136 Columbus just BEAT Vancouver and as mentioned we have played PLAYOFF teams as in Nashville, NYR, Toronto, LA. If it's so damn easy why is the streak only 17 games (all time) and why isn't any other team on a big heater? Bottom line is you need to WIN the games and they are. No nights off. Maybe watch a few of the games before you comment
Thanks alot from an oilers fan. Class. Canucks broke the oilers back right off the starting gate with great play and oilers arrogance. It's repaired now, luckily. Woodcroft did make some mistakes, but he's essentially a good coach, who will be back in the NHL and i will be cheering for him :)
The one thing I liked about Coach Woodcroft was his ability to catch violations (no matter how minor) during the replay sessions after a goal had been scored. If Jay Woodcroft challenged a play, you were like 98% sure that goal was coming off the scoreboard.
I agree with your assessment here. Knoblauch, Coffey, and the oiler coaches have elevated the team's defense to become true 'firewall hockey'. Instead of gambling on 'just get the puck to Drai and McD' to deliver rockstar goals, they now play like a team of grinding colleagues with level heads. I'm very proud of what Knoblauch and the management have done for this team.
Heads up in the D zone making plays, no longer just banking pucks off the glass in hopes it clears the zone. Also the D hugging the goal posts instead of chasing players behind the net leaving the slot open. Instead of following behind the net they move to the front and the other D pinches them off behind the net. Been night and day
I'd pump the brakes on that for now. If the Oilers stay consistent enough through the rest of the season and they find themselves in a playoff spot (especially if it's not a wild card spot), then I'd agree he's in the conversation. Not yet. 14 game win streak certainly raises eyebrows though.
Oilers were not plagued by poor goaltending. They were plagued by poor overall play, especially in the defensive end, of which poor goaltending numbers were largely a symptom. You can preach about advanced stats until the cows come home, but the fact is, Oilers were giving away ridiculous scoring opportunities left and right, which led to goals, which made the team that was already struggling with confidence issues to panic and commit further mistakes. Goaltending could have been better. But the numbers would have always been better, had their play in the defensive end been better. You have to give your goaltenders a chance to win, rather than to expect them to be the ones to make twenty impossible saves in every game, then blame them if they can't.
The issue with the Oilers under Woodcroft was that Woodcroft switched to a zone defense but never actually ran one before and struggled to implement it. Knoblauch played and coached a zone defense long before he was the Oilers coach and was brought in to run that style. Coffey also has been influential; under Dave Manson the Oilers defenders were coached to simply get the puck up the wall and get it out, and they were to never move the puck through the middle or try and make nice plays. Coffey lets the defense move the puck however they need to and encourages the defenders to make plays or go up the middle. Watch the latest Spittin’ Chiclets episode, Whit reads a text from Oilers insider Bob Stauffer around the 30min mark of their pod and explains exactly why the Oilers had to move on from Woodcroft and Manson
I was one who never counted them out. Though I didn't think that they would win this many and move up the standings that fast. I thought that they would get into the playoffs and need to fight until the last week of the regular season. They may not catch the Canucks, but I think that second place is certainly doable.
They most certainly can catch the Canucks Vegas & Van have played 5 more games than us at this point in the season.39 games left for the Oilers Trailing by 14 points to Van.with 5 games in hand.Oilers all the way.
Very good analysis. I remember watching the early part of the season wondering if the Oilers were cursed. They were outshooting teams 2 to 1 and still ending up on the losing end continually. Nice to see the turnaround.
I think a big difference is the confidence Knob has in the depth lineup. Woodcroft was constantly shifting lines and riding Connor and Leon when they were down playing them 24-25 minutes a game and burning out them before playoffs. Knob has created a more balanced and confident team by trusting McLeod, Fogele, Ryan, Gags, etc
To put it mildly - Skinner has been utterly fantastic, and breaking the record of the great Grant Fuhr says a lot!! He kept them in the game today, when they had no right to be in the game - I think it was 14 GIVEAWAYS in the first two periods!! And heaps of shots at him and the Jackets swarming all over him like a bunch of wasps!! But the thing I like best about the Oilers is that they're playing as a TEAM - and as everyone knows a TEAM will beat a bunch of superstars playing together almost all of the time - just look at the 1993 Canadiens playing the Kings in the SCF in 1993. NOBODY will want to play the Oilers from here to the end of the season - and definitely not in the playoffs!! I've been an Edmonton fan of all sports since my family first moved there in 1960 - the old Flyers, the Eskimos, the Oil Kings (used to go to the old Gardens when Sather and Pat Quinn played) and since 1979-80, the Oilers. I've lived in Christchurch, New Zealand for the past 50 years, and it was hard to get information and results for years, so thank the Devil for the Internet!!
One of the better analysis of the Oilers. However, I believe that Skinner has shown that he has what it take to get the Oilers a Stanley Cup. Tonight, the boys seemed out of sync but Stu kept them in it and they didn't cave AF the first period like they'd done because Christmas. Thanks again for your work and top notch analysis.
Golatending is paramount. When a team's 50-goal scorer goes 5 games without a point, there are 20 other guys who can take up the slack. They could still win many of those games. When a goalie goes "cold" for 5 games......they lose 5 games.
I was so surprised people thought the oilers season was over after 25 games, the oilers have been by far the streakiest team the last 5 years. And when they're on, they go on a heater. Every. Single. Year.
I think.... Draisaitl, my favorite player by the way, scored exact 50 points in.the first 41 games. So he is on track to 100 points this season also. But he had not great luck with his scoring, the goalies were often very strong too. But he becomes more and more successful with every week and the guys he plays with get many opportunities because of him so that they score - and that's what count for the team! Leon will be the man in the playoffs as he the years before was, and with Corey Perry they have now a other playoff expert in the team. I think the Oilers have a great chance going through to the finals.... But all that needs a portion of luck too!
Lemeiux and Jagr were both superstars in their prime when they did the record, the original dynamic duo. If they could do 17 games, these two superstars in mcdavid and drai could do it and better. 20 is definitely possible. Hope they do it

@@kevinmanning4880honestly I'm sure he saw what's going on in Edmonton right now and thought he could get another finals run. I'm sure other teams offered him more money but he thought he'd join Edmonton and help the run continue. Definitely a guy you love to have on the team but hat to play against
That chart of the top 15 win streaks REALLY surprised me! MTL only on there once in all those years of mega dynasties at #12. I'm also a little surprised Edmonton wasn't on there before this year with the SUPER team they had for a decade! Then you have teams like Boston & New Jersey on there twice in 2 dif eras. And Pittsburgh on there THREE TIMES in 93, 2010, and 2013! Not to mention young franchises like Colorado, Florida and COLUMBUS at #2 with 16 straight WINS! Mind boggling. Looks like EDM is gonna challenge for that number one spot.
It’s a bit fair to those Montreal dynasties of old because a tie would result in the streak being broken. It’s gotten much easier to have longer win streaks since the removal of ties! There’s a stat out there for the longest unbeaten streak which I believe is held by the Flyers at 35 games or so if I’m not mistaken.
@CunuckHockey : The script, audio & video editing of this video is better than BIG Networks like SportsNet, TSN & ESPN. Keep up the great analysis & videos! 👍🏼👍🏼
They are a very scary team right now, with too much firepower, unbelievable forechecking, very cool goalies, and an exceptional coach. 15 wins straight proved it. Congrat oilers.
I think the pour goaltending oilers have experienced was largely a symptom of their pour defensive play. If you give opportunities to shoot on goal there isn’t a team in the nhl that isn’t going to exploit that. The defense has regained so much structure. They are getting the changes done which is keeping legs fresh for forwards to get on the back check and not give up defensively. The commitment to playing defense appears to have created some great confidence between the goal tenders and d-men.
Gotta say. For a smaller channel, this was a well edited, well narrated, and well thought out/paced video. On ar with the big boys (SN/TSN etc) Sub Added. Keep this up. Well done.... (oh, and Lets Go Oilers!)
I second this! I too just Subbed and liked this video! Thanks for showing the longest streaks graphic, I was curious about those! 16 wins for Columbus??? Who saw THAT coming? Lmao
They went 14-0-1 to finish last year with essentially the same team. Admittedly, I didn’t predict the comeback to be so quick and strong, but the talent was always there. Those who were calling for Hollands head should now be thanking him for not making a dumb panic move.
They are a wagon! Canucks are really only 3 wins ahead at 43 game mark. Now with the grit and versatility of Corey Perry, the race for 'The President's Cup' is on!
Dont underestimate the D zone changes instituted by Knoblauch from a hybrid 3-2 to a zone, and the empowerment of the D to make plays up the middle of the ice. a Zone D with better in zone puck support, and an empowered D group allow the Oilers to be significantly better at exiting the zone. This is a massive reason for their better defending and much better results all over the ice
You have a 50/50 chance of being right. 46 games last season in the West tied up the final wildcard spot. I for one counted them out early on completely. Glad to see them rebound. However, they do have a challenging last half schedule with a lot of back to back games. They will still need to play 500 hockey the last half and have afew other teams hit some bumps. With the addition of Corey Perry i think they will be in the final 8 and if not be a Cup contender. Good luck Oilers.
Yea I think Paul Coffee is a big part of the defensive play improving dramatically. I think Skinner has found his groove and hopefully carries that through. Not sure bringing Corey Perry into the mix is a good plan.
Honestly, Edmonton has the same issues they had last year. Good scoring even though their PP is not nearly as good as last year, is overall defense and goaltending. We saw what this lead to last year. They have a chance to catch Vegas but I don't think either one will catch Vancouver. But Vancouver is starting to have some injuries, and Vegas has been getting healthier, and Edmonton hasn't had any serious stretches with injuries. All that really matters is getting into the playoffs.
I was saying the same thing about the Oilers. If I were a betting man, at the beginning of December I would have bet the Oilers would make the playoffs. There's just too much talent there.
Knoblauch said post game, to the effect, not running on all cylinders but a Win is a Win. This run to 17 looking shaky last 3 games but for some reason, if 97 and 29 aren't going, guys like 37, 71 and othes are chipping in. That lockdown forecheck is a money maker right now when they are on. They can at least hit 17 if they keep GA 2 or less.
The biggest question going forward into the season will be if Skinner can hold this level or even level up or if he is currently just overperforming and the opponents underperforming against him and the oilers
WTF-How about you advance your analytics, and give Paul Coffey the credit he deserves. The defensive core has improved, and that certainly helps the goalies!
Two very winnable home games before the All-Star break (Chicago, Nashville) then a tough game on the road (Vegas.) I'm going to say 16, but they fall short. If they win that one, they could win against Anaheim to get to 18, but the back to back with Los Angeles the next night on the road is also very easy to lose. Probable 16, best 18.
I just hope they are not peaking too soon and get complacent when playoffs come around. Also what I find encouraging is they seem to be winning games 5 on 5 v on power play like last year and lately seem to be getting more bottom six scoring to help McDavid, Hyman, Draisatl and Nugent-Hopkins. I want to see McDavid go all the way. He’s a generational guy and I hope Edmonton doesn’t waste his career. But also agree I am not sold on their goaltending just yet. Amazing run, keep it up.
It has nothing to do with woodcroft nor knoblauch. It's only because the mcjesus was injured and came back to set the record straight. The team was in shambles because he wasn't on the ice. The team looks up to Connor. You can put any coach in there and they'll have 16 straight wins. Coach is mainly passive.
Oilers played pretty poorly against Columbus last night, wouldn't have won without Skinner. But sometimes when things are going your day they just keep going your way.
The 1992-1993 Pittsburgh Penguins hold the NHL record for the most consecutive wins in a season. However, did they win the Stanley Cup? No. In the playoffs, the defending Stanley Cup champions were eliminated by the New York Islanders, who were then eliminated rather easily by the Montreal Canadiens. Most players and fans would rather have their team win the Stanley Cup. A consecutive win streak for the OIlers is fine for players and fans, but it is no guarantee of Stanley Cup success.
as a canucks fan as much as i want tochett to win jack adams, if oilers keep this up all the way to the playoffs, it would be an absolute robbery if their coach doesn't win it
I dont agree with your assessment that Skinner was the main reason for the turnaround. Yes, he has played better but thats primarily switching from man to man defense under Mansons system to zone defense under Coffeys system. Defense corp play better, goalies automatically play better.
I dont agree with the analysis. The Oilers played horrible defense the first 18 or 19 games. Goaltending didn`t look great, but the quality of chances the Oilers allowed against them was insane. Every NHL player would score on these chances (unless he`s Connor Brown). That`s the big success of Knoblauch, he fixed a D that played horrible and got players like Bouchard, McD, Ekholm, even Draisaitl back on track. I don`t trust the Oilers. They are streaky AF and right now they play on a heater, but that can turn around quickly. Especially as their schedule has been easy. If they can get a streak like this going in the playoffs, they lift the cup. But they are super polarized as a team right now.
I am always cautious judging post season with reg. Whole different sport. Though, part of me hopes that the boys have been getting ready, learning from previous mistakes. in cautious hope, I want them to go deep

"McFairy, McPrincess, McWhiner".... It was sickening ( but, then again, I'm not a fourteen year old).
What was even worse, was seeing all the Flames and Leafs car flags all over the city and thinking have to endure them all summer.
On behalf of all wagon jumpers: "GO OIL GO"
Pls forgive me, I'm a highly flawed individual... I bow to your greatness. haha. 😂
Fantastic Analysis
The signing of Perry reminds me of getting Linseman in 1984. Let's see if it works again.
You're a real one for that Bryzgalov clip
Lmao I’ve used that clip multiple times in my videos 💀 I use it every chance I get tbh it’s one of my favourites of all time
Corey Perry looks like an MMA fighter in interviews haha. His ears just aren't cauliflowered that much
Corey Perry is a Stanley Cup playoffs warrior, we are glad he chose to come here.
@@kevinmanning4880honestly I'm sure he saw what's going on in Edmonton right now and thought he could get another finals run. I'm sure other teams offered him more money but he thought he'd join Edmonton and help the run continue. Definitely a guy you love to have on the team but hat to play against
great video my man! Lets go Oilers!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the vid. And go Canucks go 😉
That chart of the top 15 win streaks REALLY surprised me!

Great video, keep up the great work!
Thank you! Will do
You make absolutely phenomenal content man!
I appreciate it man! Good luck with your videos as well, love seeing more hockey content out there!
They are a very scary team right now, with too much firepower, unbelievable forechecking, very cool goalies, and an exceptional coach. 15 wins straight proved it. Congrat oilers.
What's impressed me this year vs last year is the depth scoring. It doesn't seem like they are being carried by McD and Drai as much.
Wildcard teams? Baby we are gunning for second in division lmao. Already ahead of LA
nicely narrated!!!
14 baby!!! Well done sir!
Gotta say. For a smaller channel, this was a well edited, well narrated, and well thought out/paced video. On ar with the big boys (SN/TSN etc) Sub Added. Keep this up. Well done.... (oh, and Lets Go Oilers!)
Thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it! (oh, and go Canucks 😉)
I second this! I too just Subbed and liked this video! Thanks for showing the longest streaks graphic, I was curious about those!
16 wins for Columbus??? Who saw THAT coming? Lmao
@Trevorious2010 Sam Gagner saw it coming

What a wildly entertaining year this is! From expected contender to one of the worst records, to a (as of Jan 29) 16 game win streak!
Deserve more subs, good video
I appreciate that!
Engagement 🏒🥅
Up!
They also have a lot of games in hand, on most teams
@@johnfive2440 hence the litany of "back to back games." Playing night after night takes its toll and the boys need to rest.
we just gotta worry about Nashville and Vegas breaking the streak tbh, hopefully the all star break doesn`t kill the momentum fingers crossed
And here we are, one game away from winning the Cup! Go Oilers!!!
When a team has a streak like this going, it's usually a weaker team that halts it, probably because they come in overconfident.
Nice video. Nice job!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
Yea I think Paul Coffee is a big part of the defensive play improving dramatically. I think Skinner has found his groove and hopefully carries that through. Not sure bringing Corey Perry into the mix is a good plan.
I don't think it was a hot take to say one of the best teams in the league was going to turn it around 15 games into the season lol
All that really matters is getting into the playoffs.
its a great time to be an oilers fan
It's unlikely to be to the same thing but its like when the Blues went from dead last to the cup in 2019.
Oilers now have 16 straight wins. Unbelievable!
I was saying the same thing about the Oilers. If I were a betting man, at the beginning of December I would have bet the Oilers would make the playoffs. There's just too much talent there.
They winnin the cup finally .
Why are you calling them a wild card team? They aren't in a wild card spot.
The biggest question going forward into the season will be if Skinner can hold this level or even level up or if he is currently just overperforming and the opponents underperforming against him and the oilers
crazy to think they have 3 top 20 lines in those statistics
New to the channel. Great value all around. You know your stuff.
I NEVER LOST MY FAITH AND NEVER WILL!
Bryzgalov has the best answers towards media during scrums.
Man hope they build on this run right through the playoffs and not have this be the peak of the season . Canucks or oilers for the cup cmon baby
Just a note about the Penguins record of 17 straight wins. That streak only ended because the season ended.
So what
goaltending is important but the real change is defence.
Go Oilers all the way to the playoffs 🎉
14-0 and still going strong!
15!
I can't understand how they aren't doing better. It's definitely a GA problem as their offence is great across the board
If you don't know what you're talking about, just stay quiet.
I live in edmonton so I understand but if your watching in January or February of 2024 they are the best in the NHL now
This the numbers guy
Make it 14 in a row now haha
I’d love for Edmonton to challenge the win streak record, but I think Nashville or Vegas are going to end it
Oilers played pretty poorly against Columbus last night, wouldn't have won without Skinner. But sometimes when things are going your day they just keep going your way.
I used to think that they would have made the finals
But they signed Corey Perry
I think it's crazy that you think they're going to take a wild card spot.
it is crazy they have made it this far.
In an insane world, is it not reasonable to expect more insanity?
The 1992-1993 Pittsburgh Penguins hold the NHL record for the most consecutive wins in a season. However, did they win the Stanley Cup? No. In the playoffs, the defending Stanley Cup champions were eliminated by the New York Islanders, who were then eliminated rather easily by the Montreal Canadiens. Most players and fans would rather have their team win the Stanley Cup. A consecutive win streak for the OIlers is fine for players and fans, but it is no guarantee of Stanley Cup success.
Pov your watching this after the playoffs
as a canucks fan as much as i want tochett to win jack adams, if oilers keep this up all the way to the playoffs, it would be an absolute robbery if their coach doesn't win it
This is ageing well
I dont agree with your assessment that Skinner was the main reason for the turnaround. Yes, he has played better but thats primarily switching from man to man defense under Mansons system to zone defense under Coffeys system. Defense corp play better, goalies automatically play better.
The Oilers just beat the Blackawks 3-0. Their winning streak is now 15
Perry on your team seems to mean at least Conference Finals.
Though, part of me hopes that the boys have been getting ready, learning from previous mistakes. in cautious hope, I want them to go deep
perry such a good pick up .. LETS GO OIL!!!
