This did start the truck for me, preventing a ride in a tow truck, but it did have me ride in an ambulance. A word of caution to those who try this, don't stand between 2 vehicles doing this. I stood in front of my truck, behind another car in the parking lot, to keep my face away from the sparks. When it started, it jumped forward, pinning me. I don't blame the video poster at all for this, but wanted to share this as a warning to others. Thankfully I'm all good, with no injuries other than some bruising.
Holy crap! Thank god you're ok!
I did this before too on an old 4 eye mustang, left it in gear and crossed the solenoid and the car rolled over my foot lol stupid of me in a rush of course … but yes be careful for sure!
@@23redwings23 my truck was in park when I did it. It didn't move forward a ton, but maybe a couple of inches. Enough to pin me though. I'm glad your situation wasn't any worse.
@@pat2595 truck one pride zero 😂😂
@@GettinJunkDone Since everyone is getting pinned you should probably pin this comment 🤣 Thanks for the tutorial 👍🏽
Simple video but VERY informative. Alot of people try to make this complicative video and lose focus on the main point . This video was a perfect example of simple and straight to the point. Thanx!
I've done this repair a few times on various cars there are two things to keep in mind. The first is that the two spuds are copper (sometimes they have a silver-grey coating but they are copper studs) and they can be twisted off very easily, use no more than 60 inch-pounds of torque. Second, the truck in the video has only a few wires going to it, on a Lincoln or later model cars there will be more, not only do you have to make sure that wires from stud (A go bake on stud (A you also must carefully note the order and angular alignment and put them back in exactly the same way. If you put them back sloppily and try to make them seat by torquing the nut you will twist the stud off.
Thank you for saving me tow and mechanic. Video well articulated and to the point. You guys have saved people huge amounts of time and dollars.
Agreed. Very helpful video.
Got me home after work, stranded in a bad area after dark. Thank you!
That's what its all about, good work!
Thanks for sharing that video I was just at a gas station and an F-150 was stranded there look pretty stressed out I started helping him to troubleshoot the issue I looked up the vehicle and the issue that is seen to be having and your video popped up after about the dude was there like 30 45 minutes came across your video started like a champ
Awesome job! Glad it helped!
Thanks for the video. My 89 f150 did this out of nowhere at the bike trail yesterday. 1st video that popped up on my Google search, got me home and going to change the solenoid today.
Great! Glad you got off the trail safely!
Thank you. I have a 1991 Ford Jamboree with this issue and I'm learning how to fix things myself. Your video is hands down the best as far as explaining and showing without a lot of fluff thrown in! Greatly appreciated!!
Thanks for watching and the kind words!
@@GettinJunkDone you are more than welcome. Turns out it's the ignition (fingers crossed). Changed starter first - didn't work. Changed solenoid - still didn't work. Now I'm told it should be ignition.
I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, you saved me lots of grieves, money, and frustration. I bridged the terminal it started right up. thank you thank you sir
Thanks for watching!
I was trying to get home from football practice, was stuck for almost 2 hours and bam! Problem solver 😎 it worked for my 94 F-150 Flareside
this also worked on my 99 expedition with a 4.2 all I did to diagnose was the screwdriver test. thank you
This is an excellent video. I was hearing a click about half the time, so the solenoid wasn't completely dead, but it wasn't closing the circuit. My truck starts fine now. The job took me about 30 minutes
Good work, thanks for watching!!
CRAZY!!!!! I did what you explained and this is what happened to me. It was very late at night almost morning. I was parked in front of the house. Jump it and it lunged and knocked me to the ground. I hit my head on the pavement and was out cold. I don’t know how long I laid there but when I came to I was under the running car. I crawled out got up looked around to see if anyone had seen what had happened. No one was up. So I got in and drove away. I never thought this had ever happened to anyone else until I read the comments.
This HELPED ME OUT & KNOCKED ME OUT THE SAME TIME. thank you for helping!!!
Omg, lol
Moral of the story stand to the side of the truck
Thank you for clear and understandable instructions. They are a huge help
2019 it worked for my 2000 Ford F-250 i was almost stuck at my kids school until I stumbled across this video..thanks a lot!!
Thank you so much for this video! My 97 ford explorer was doing this, no start/no crank. I could not find the dang problem. I came across your video and gave it a try. Started right up
Thank you! A family member has a 94 Bronco, same engine (i believe). tried explaining to them where starting solenoid was and decided to look up a video to send them when I came across this amazing video that explains and shows everything so simply. Curious if you’re familiar with Volkswagen
8 years later and you still the man . Fixed it 👌🏾
Glad it helped, nice work!
Ha! You saved the day .. been trying to tap the starter , get it in park ( light for dash showing what gear your in only showed in reverse, towed it to unlock the gear etc. Watched your video and there was no sparks at first . Then I tapped it and cleaned the right plug and then sparked , jumped in and it started right up! Yay saves me 165 to get it towed . Thank you so much 🙏
And this is what it's all about! I'm glad it helped and thanks for watching!
Thank you!!! This video helped me pin point my problem.
My truck is broken down @ work I was going to replace the starter but now I think this is my problem co click nothing same as you diagnosis Thanks, Man!!.
Man you help me out I thought I was stranded my cylenoid screw was loose tighten it up and it started right up, good content
Thanks man. You saved me from having to pay for a tow. Two thumbs up on this video.
Glad it helped!!
This was a very helpful video. Thanks for sharing.
For people trouble shooting here, check for corrosion in your wiring. Make sure you have good contact between the battery and solenoid. Make sure your battery connectors do not have corrosion. Make sure you have a good ground contact to the chassis, too. There is a negative (black) wire that goes from the negative terminal of the battery to the chassis. Make sure it is not corroded.
Also, make sure your relays and fuses are not corroded and are making good contact. Just taking them out and putting them back in should fix any corrosion issues, but I would clean the terminals if you see corrosion on them.
Before jumping those posts, be careful to be sure it is out of gear if you have a manual transmission, and remember it will crank but not start if you don't have the key in the run position
Exactly! Thanks for the additional info.
Ha I knew about how your suppose to leave the key in the run position, and I still spent about 15min wondering why it wouldn't crank.. But yur comment made me double check it.. 👌Thanks haha
Thank you!!! Thank you! You saved me from walking home in the middle of the night and to save me some money. Greetings from Slovenia.
I have a '93 Ford Explorer, would click but wouldn't start. Replaced the battery to no avail. Tried bypassing the solenoid as suggested in this video and it started right up. Thanks!
Thanks you gave straight answer to question without bunch of bypass bs.
Glad you liked it!
Thanks for this I had this problem so many times.
Dude you’re the man. I jumped it and It actually started my truck and now the starter relay works. WTF!! I got another relay just in case but this saved my ass
Just want to say thank u for the tip! Saved me hundreds!
Thanks for the video just bought a bronco it was fine the next day nothing this video help me alot
Just just worked for Me and my 93 T-Bird Project Rightnow ,thanks Bro😁👍😎
FYI I have a 94 fleetwood southwind rv w ford f53 engine. Thanks again
Always take a picture of wiring so you know what goes where 👍
My 98 expedition turns a half way an stops, sounds like the motor is about to lock up. After a couple of tries it fire's up. Wondering if that could be the starter..
You did such a great job filming this. Thank
man your the best you just showed something cool and very helpful
This fixed my problem on my 1990 bronco! Thank you!
Awesome! Glad it helped!
Dude thank you so much, I have an f150 that’s been sitting for years and this did the trick! Thanks man.. now for the belt that I discovered is ripped up once it finally started lol.
Hey thanks for the reminder on the bridge, I got no start or crank so I'm hoping I fix it!
Good luck!
Many thanks go out to you for your help. Our 1988 Ford Ranger would not even click. I prayed for an answer and looked on RUclips for answers. Battery was checked and was fine. It was the starter solenoid. Eighteen dollars later and it was fixed! what a relief. Cannot say enough thank yous!!!
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching!
Worked for me as well, had a mechanic scheduled for tomorrow, got to cancel and spend $20 to fix the problem
Thanks Joe! I thought I was going to have to replace my starter for $250, now I have a quick easy fix for $30.
Glad it helped!
Thanks for getting me getting me unstranded. Now to get a new relay.
you definitely saved me. thanks for the vid.
If bridging terminals off starter relay, can I use like that or will it leave me stranded
Can you help me please. 1975 Pontiac Catalina 400. I had a bare spot on the starter Power wire it got accidentally grounded out it's the 2nd thicker wire runs from the battery cable directly to the starter. Taped it asap after disconnecting the battery. Checked all fuses and power. Power when ignition is turned over but no crank no start. It's a basic two wire system. I know for fact the ignition switch is good it less than two weeks old. Starter is new unless I fryed it. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and great video.
Thank you worked like a charm on my 97 ranger
My 79 won't do anything if I try to jump the solenoid and it started twice but starter was staying on and wires was smoking.last time it started and shut off just fine idk what's wrong
Worked on my 2001 Expedition, saved me from having to wait 3 hours
Hi. Is it still the solenoid when trying to jump start. With no crank or clicks?. Do I have to replace solenoid and the starter. Battery only a year old. Has warranty. I hope. It's for a friend of mine. Thank you for your help and time. Thank you for posting this video,😇
I have a 1985 f350 and getting a click from the the starter relay but no crank will it still be the same situation?
Worked on my 97' f150
I just replaced this. I have no crank at the key but when I bridge the gap between the studs I have crank, I also have power going to the solenoid.
I've had a 1998 Nascar F150 5spd manual, a 1999 2wd & now 1999 4wd Expedition ALL run into the same issue. Love the late 90s F series but like clockwork that solenoid will fail at some point. Easy fix though.
Does power @43 seconds go from left to right ? Or as long as one side is on the other then it’ll work..as far as negative and positive side of solenoid ? Thanks I have a hot wire from alternator, would bad alternator cause that? Thanks
I tapped the connections with a screwdriver but it didn't start however it sparked a lot does that mean it's still good
Hmm I was thinking it was my viper alarm..I'll try this when I get home..it's actually starting now..I wonder if the silinoid got wet and itbl just needed to dry 🤔
I just want to say thank you!!! I’ve been trying to figure this no start issue for three days and this was my issue. The screwdriver started it right up! Sucks I already replaced the starter but I guess on a 25 year old truck it can’t hurt to replace it anyway! Thank you!!!!!!!!
Glad it helped! THANK YOU for watching!
Hey, quick question, I’m not getting any voltage from the igniter wire. Can it be a cut wire somewhere? I replaced the key assembly but didn’t solve the issue. Thanks in advance.
Ok what if i try and start my truck with starter solenoid and it trys and crank over but dont. Would that be the starter then
You are a legend! Thanks so much mate.
Is the key turned in the ignition when you do this?
So if I changed a solenoid on a friend's truck and when I went to start it, it worked but the battery light is on and wasn't on before I realized the Solenoid what could be my problem
this worked for my 2.9l 5 speed manual 1990 ford ranger (no crank, no start issue)
YOOO MAN YOUR THE BEST so many other confusing videos so simple made my day 🤙
This help me a lot! Thanks
Dude, you are legendary. Thanks so much for the video!
Great video only other piece of advice for people watching is to take a jumper cable from the positive post of battery and put power to the S lead (top wire that you see him pull off) and this will simulate signal from the ignition switch. If you just screw driver across the leads this is not proving that you are getting signal from the ignition switch....if you do not check to see if your getting signal to this S lead when you are trying to start the vehicle then your problem could possibly be faulty ignition switch in the column or failed clutch/neutral safety switch. Hope this helps
Excellent point and definitely something to consider. Thanks for the great comment.
This comment saved me. If you guys can't get it started by bridging, try jumping from positive terminal to that top post.
@@elid9196 I jump mine from the s post to the cable post running to the starter.
Ok so my 93 f150 4.9 5 speed won’t crank. Tried to jump solenoid. Nothing. Checked wires to starter not thing. Any ideas?
i have a 2002 Excursion 7.3 Diesel. Can not get it to start keep blowing fuse for starter motor. IF relay is bad, will it blow fuse?
What would cause the starter relay to click really fast no start or crank even when bridging
So I'm assuming if I do this I got the Sparks and everything but no start. Would that indicate my starter is bad? All I get is a clunk from where the starter relay is when I try to start it.
Wouldn’t throwing power to the ignition terminal test the relay?
Any ideas if there's no power to the solenoid? Brand new battery.
thanks for clear video, hope this is my problem, I'm getting no clicks when turn key
Did it help?
turns out had broken smaller red wire going into starter @@GettinJunkDone
My ranger starts but it makes a weird z(ing )noise sometime and won’t crank I tell I lock wheel and turn key any idea what it could be ?
Hey Everyone, thanks for watching. Be sure to check out what's happening with this truck nowadays. I'm completely rebuilding it from the ground up. You can follow this link for the playlist. Thanks!

I like the vid. I do believe part of the info is incorrect unfortunately. Because my old solenoid, as well as the brand new one I just put on, both will still jump the car started. So I do t think it’s accurate to say if it jumps off the solenoid it’s a bad solenoid because my brand new solenoid still does it
It's supposed to, that's why the new one does it. The old one might now be bad.
If a new solenoid doesn't get the truck started, the solenoid wasn't the problem.
This person said no matter old or new solenoid it only starts from the solenoid the solenoid isn't the issue it's probably the neutral safety switch.
Just replaced the solenoid and truck still won't start. Tried the solenoid jump and it doesn't crank nor make a spark. What might that indicate?
Is the relay suppost to click when i turn the key?? It clicks but nothing with the starter .. i got a new one and i put it on now it doesnt click
Would replacing this part also help with an issue in which the battery isn’t getting a charge from the alternator? After replacing both the battery/alternator and still no charge, I tracked the issue to this starter relay and the wiring running up to it from the back of the alternator? Thanks in advance!
+Joe Robinson, I have a 1994 Ford Explorer. With the key in the run position I only get sparks when touching both terminals with screwdriver on the starter relay solenoid. Should I just replace the starter relay solenoid?
This is my question! What worked for you?
Will the ignition wire still be hot if solenoid is bad ? No power to the S terminal. It's on a 1975 Pontiac 400. If my believes are correct the S Terminal wire runs from the ignition switch on the column under the dash to the starter solenoid. So no power do I have a bad ignition switch. Thank you
The ignition wire will be hot if ignition switch is good
awesome, that was the problem, thank you so much!
Thanks it's really help me start this truck
Great! Glad it helped!
I bridged the 2002 F159 firewall starter relay It sparks but no start ?
My F-100 did nothing after driving fine, so I did the "Solanoid Bypass" and it fired right up. So I have a bad Solanoid and not a bad Neutral Safety Switch?
Do you leave the ignition switch on position and in neutral or how ?
I went out and bought a new starter relay today installed it and it still will not start or no clicking sound. But it will start if I Bridge the two posts with a screwdriver. What else could it be please?
Super helpful I appreciate your video!
my 97 f250 has good battery, when i turn the key it clicks and the power goes out until I pull a lead off the battery and put it back on. I think there is a bad connection or a incomplete circuit somwhere. Any suggestions.
If the solenoid clicks when you jump the terminals with a screwdriver or whatever its an internal problem.
My 86 F-250 does the same thing when it sits for extended times. I just sit there and keep clicking it eventually it will fire off. If i drive it more frequently the problem goes away.
So keep it in mind if it clicks dont be deterred keep trying!
I bridged the 2002 F159 firewall starter relay It sparks but no start ?
Sometimes a no sound Dead Silence when trying to start the vehicle turns out to be a faulty neutral safety switch, that's happened to me on the few occasions.
Is this on a manual???? If it is a manual then where is it located.
Bypass that ho. Dangerous, and allows the truck to start in gear, but no more issues with it
WHATS THAT BOTTOM POST FOR THE SMALL ONE
i get sparks and a loud click now from starter, but no turnover....not sure if starter or battery at that point
This happen just yesterday on my Ford Ranger 1995. Have to wait until Monday to get the part. Thx for the vid
Update, hope someone can help me. We bought an aftermarker one and there was no way we could get it to work. Besides the fact that I can turn my truck on with the screwdriver I have blown the fuse of the starter relay, I don't know if the fuse went off by the failure of the relay or something else
I have a question i recently changed my fuel system on my 92 mustang gt and now my car don't wanna start it cranks but it wont start any suggestions will be highly appreciated i think it might be the ignition module tfi.
Prime fuel pump to get air out of fuel line
What if h do this but it just sparks and won’t crank won’t start at all and u have replaced this part and started it by bridge 3 times then back to just sparks
Would this cause fuel pump no power?? Fuel gauge not working as well.
