  • Was having intermittent starting issues on my 1995 Ford Ranger. I threw parts at it for a while, then finally resolved the issue with a short piece of wire. I'm posting this video because the problem seems a little more common than it should be and I hope I can help others with the same issue. It's a departure from my usual videos, but there's more to life than shooting, and ranting I guess. :-)
    Just had someone that saw my video go one step further and really give you a good look at what you can do to fix this issue. Please go watch and like this video.

    Had This problem for 2 years but only in the summer. I could let my 1995 Ford Explorer sit for 10 minutes then it would usually start.I took it to the dealer and they said it was definitely the fuel pump (they wanted $950 to change it) I said no thanks , it has to be the relay , replaced that. It worked for 3 months ,then I really got suck , It wouldn't start jump or anything , so I had it towed home.Long story short, it would start once and that's it . So I had Big O change the fuel pump. Went to pick it up and it wouldn't start. They traced the problem to a broken wire under the relay, But recommended I change the whole fuse box!WHAT? So YOU Are Much Smarter Than The Ford Dealer Mechanics And The Big O Mechanics!!! THANKS !

    I'm having the same issue with 94 Ranger 4x4, 4.0 V6 and this looks like it could be the problem. Whether it is or not, I want to thank you (after going through a lot of time consuming trouble shooting procedures) for taking the time to make and post a video and to save hundreds of other people from having to go through all the same trouble you did. Good luck to you in this life and the next. Ken

    I have a 2000 Ford Windstar van with an intermittent start issue. If it fails to start in a quiet place you can actually hear that the fuel pump does NOT kick on when it fails to start. Issue has been to try to teach the main driver (the wife) what to listen for and give me the data. Typically you can turn the ignition on and off a few times (it cranks over fine of course) and then if you can hear the pump kick in it will start right up. I knew that it had to be something silly like this, as the pump pressure was fine and I had checked the relay and all the wiring between the relay and pump. It just did not not make sense. It is so intermittent that it was almost impossible to diagnose. This video makes PERFECT sense this Guy is a freaking genius LOL

    Really happy to hear the video helped you Alex. The 2.3 is one of the best motors Ford ever put into anything. Thanks for the view and comment. Over 300k on your Ranger, that's pretty impressive man. 99% of fixes are simple things, it's just not simple to find them most of the time. If I had all of the money I've spent on parts that did not need replaced over the years I'd take a nice vacation. :-) Again, glad the video helped and thanks for sharing the comment.

    I'll be looking into this fix soon. I have 2001 3.0L V6, 107K Today was the first time I had a problem. Engine was warm. I made a quick stop, come back and the engine cranked good and would start, sort of, but it never reached idle speed, maybe only get to 100-200 RPM for a few seconds and then shut off. I tried startomg it a couple of times over the course of abt 45 min., then it started and ran well and I drove home. Mahalo.

    Thanks Neil. My son called on the road (or the side of the road) with the same problem. Like you, I suspected the ignition switch. My intent was to google and text him a picture of the switch. I came across your video, and just messing with the relays got it work. This happened a couple weeks ago, and at the time we verified we had spark and fuel, then out of the blue it just started working. When he gets home I'll verify the integrity of the wires, and connectors, but thought you'd like to know your video got him quickly back up and running.

    My intermittent starting problem in the equivalent Mazda B3000 proved to be a couple-dollar relay controlling the fuel pump. At the most inconvenient times it would decide to not operate when switched, leaving the fuel pump unenergized. The engine would turn over and over and over, but with no fuel, it wasn't going anywhere. I had it towed home and to shops multiple times after which it would not always show the bad behavior. If it did, the shop would always find something to replace, but I--finally--noticed when it worked normally that I could detect the faint whir of the fuel pump when the ignition switch was turned to the ON position, before proceeding to START. I learned that if I didn't hear that whir, it was never going to start. That ultimately led me to the replace the relay, after which no problem with it again, ever.

      I've got a '92 Ranger...and if you ever get the gumption to investigate your negative battery cable, pull it completely off the truck -- WITHOUT cutting it; it is possible, I've done it -- and ask yourself: Why on Earth would any engineer make a cable that could corrode from dust, dirt, cold weather, and water, and spider that wire: A) Through a harness connector that feeds all your system grounds; B) Is a frame-to-battery ground; and C) Is the return side of your starting circuit?!?
      Because, let me tell you, that is EXACTLY what I found after deciding to redo my negative battery cable (pursuant to good maintainence procedures). I swear....sometimes Ford really has no idea what their engineers are thinking.

    Neil, this really worked. I was having intermittent no start condition for over a year, 1996 ford ranger 4.0 2wd super cab. Also rough idle and sometimes stalled when parked for 30 minutes or more after it warmed up, and tried to start while still warm. Anyway, I applied your fix (I also soldered a wire to the 85 terminal of the relay, and hooked other end to ground on the body under hood), and it worked extremely well, both problems solved. Many thanks for diagnosing this problem and sharing your method with us.

    1997 Mazda B-4000SE 4.0L V6 here ( same as a Ford Ranger XLT) - mine suddenly one morning after using all day before would NOT START (it's happened before a few times), cranked like nuts, no "fire". What did I find? It was the F'ing Fuel Pump Inertia "collision" switch mounted on the passenger side inside the firewall. No truck impacts, no bumps, no anything that should have tripped that Inertia "collision" switch!! Fuel pump is fine! Beware Boys, ALWAYS ALWAYS check that damn Inertia "collision" switch FIRST on ANY Ranger or Mazda B-Series!! A kick of a foot, a package you have on the floor bumping it, could easily trip it! Push the button down to reset and GO!

    Its always wise to take the 3 ground wires 1) firewall, 2) drivers side inner fender, and 3) radiator support ... and remove, sand them up, and re-attach them as ground wires (especially after years will create problems). Worked on 99 Ranger and it would die and then need to have the key turned off and then re=started immediately just going around the block once. After removing the snap connector on a bunch of under hood spots and removing ECU and squirting electrical cleaner on all the connectors and pushing them in and out 3 times, to get rid of corrosion, that didn't work, swapping relays to the ECU relay didn't work, but making the ground connectors shiny again did work, drove it around the block 4 times without dying. Truck now has different problems but, someone might consider doing as I have and see if it helps. Did relieve the fuel line shrader valve and worked temporarily.
    Good job on the nightmare that is electrical malfunctions in cars.

    Had the same problem with my '95 b2300. Slid the bed back to replace the fuel pump, and also replaced the fuel filler neck. Still had the problem. I had switched the relays around too. Sometimes I could fool with the relay and the truck would start. Last time it acted up, I pulled the relay and cleaned the prongs. I then twisted them just a bit. I then sprayed a little wd40 on them and pushed the relay in and pulled it out a few times. did this because I think the truck had sat for a long time before I got it. It had a few dirt dauber nests on it here and there. So far, so good!

    Wow frustrating don't say enough... on my 97 ranger for years my gas gage hasn't worked... so when the intermittent starting issues started occurring and it would die on me going down the road, even at 70 mph, but i was able to kind of pop start it and get to where i was going. I figured it was the fuel pump had finally slipped on the proverbial banana peal and was dead ... so I replace fuel pump and filter and it ran fine, for a day or so, so I replaced the fuel pressure regulator, and the clicking of the relay continues... now I'm going to look at that wire... gonna be so mad at myself if that wire connector was all that needs to be adressed.... but I guess after 20 years the stuff I did replace needed to be replaced soon anyhow... thank you for a possible easy fix on this most annoying problem I have been pulling my hair out with.

    Thanks for the post. Carbon copy of issues I'm having. Truck will start and run perfect and then have intermittent issues with no pattern. Could have had 100 good starts, then issues. Happens cold, happens hot, totally random. Usually can remedy by pulling relay and re-inserting few times, which only leads me to believe that much more that it has a electrical connection issue @ the relay box.
    Anyway, thanks for taking the time to put this up, will be digging into this next couple days to see what I can uncover

    Mr. Neil I believe you are my lifesaver my friend. I have a 1994, and this is happening. It happened a few years ago also, so this will be what I try first. I couldn't, for the life of me, remember what it was the mechanic replaced (fuel pump relay). I have noticed that my truck starts great, and occasionally with hesitation, and then the other day it just cranked, and cranked, and cranked, but didn't start. I waited about half an hour, and wolah! it started. I'll be checking this out soon.

    If you click "show more", you get a link to another similar video. I tried your solution on my 96 explorer and blew a bunch of fuses just like the guy in the other video. At that point, I pretty much did what he did, and found the connector that you grounded all worn out. I replaced it, the blown fuses, and all three relays as well and the problem was solved. The ground solution caused me more problems but it got me looking in the right spot. Still saved me a lot of money though, so thanks.

    Greetings, I see this is a really old post of yours. But, after basically losing my mind with my 1995 Ford ranger 2.3 L 4Cyl. I have been having the whole no start crap for nearly a year. My first instinct was relays too I swapped them around and seemed to not change anything, here is a list of things I have done in the last year to fix this problem in the order tried.
    Relays, Fuel filter, gas pump, timing chain, alternator, fan belt (it was tearing), Catalytic converter, new fuel neck, fuse's, cleaned my throttler intake, cleaned my tank and engine with Sea form, checked and cleaned my mass airflow sensor, and as of yesterday morning replaced all spark plugs, wires, and the coil module. When I was done I went to fire her up thinking this HAS to work .. nothing. Am pissed I let it sit over night with a trickle charger on her cause I have not driven her in 2 weeks cause she won't start. I get up in the morning still she cranks but, don't wanna roll over I try 4 times to start her up on forth try I just pump the gas as fast as I can. I can feel her choking and suddenly BOOM she rolls over. I idle her for sometime then quickly get to driving her around town. Get home nervous but, I shut her down. try to restart .. np. shut her down .. restart NP. I go in the house for a couple hours then, decide to fire her up to see if I can make a run to lowes.. the bitch won't start! Am so fed UP with this issue. BTW all auto diagnosis come back clean nothing is wrong with her.. do you think this is also a loose ground in my relay?

    Neil, you're a freaking life saver! Thanks for the vid. This was exactly the problem on my wife's 1998 Ford F150. I used a tester on the fuel pump relay plug, and sure enough only one part of the plug lit up; the other did not. I ran a ground from the plug to the fender, as per your video, and it started right up! Thank you! Now, if you can help me figure out why the dashboard on my 1998 Ford Ranger stays on, even after the car is turned off, that would be awesome!

      @ndcouey70  3 года назад

      Thanks for the view, comment, and kind words. Glad you got the wife's rig going. As far as those dash lights I'd start with the wiring on the switch. If something there is grounded that isn't supposed to be it'll complete the circuit all the time. Could be a bad switch, but with 90's Ford's it's usually a wiring/ground issue. Good rigs, but electrical issues will really eat up a lot of time troubleshooting. Good luck

    I changed my ignition switch and was about to change the crankshaft sensor but a friend pressed the valve on the fuel rail while I it was messing up and I was cycling the key on and off and no fuel came out. Oh my I just came to the part where you said you weren't getting any fuel. Thanks man! I was just about to order a fuel pump. I'm going to try your trick with the ground wire first! Mine does have slightly different symptoms though. Whenever it wont start I shut it off and wait 5 or more minutes and it always starts. Also many times it will run very rough at a few hundred RPM's for a short while and either die or start running normally. Another friend says that it's the fuel pump about to go out and that it's overheating and because it's sitting in a tank of fuel it cools down very fast in the 5 minutes and then works fine. At this point it could be either thing or something else all together but I'm definitely going to try grounding the wire you pointed out before I buy any more parts...

    • @surfstev
      @surfstev 5 лет назад

      I forgot. My friend said he heard the relay for the fuel pump clicking on when I was operating the key so mine probably really is the fuel pump. I like you idea with the test light but I think I can use my mechanical multi-meter to do the same thing.

    Thanks for the video. 600,000 views... What does that tell you? Awesome. Sounds like my exact symptoms. Will have to check it out. I saw another video from a full time Ford Mechanic that said that the master ground connector by the battery to the frame of the vehicle could get corroded and would produce the same sort of intermittent starting issue. The master ground connector was connected with an eyelet to the frame with a bolt. The threads of the bolt were the only connection because the frame was painted. He removed the bolt, sand papered the eyelet, and sanded the paint off the frame then coated the connection with battery grease. The bad ground would kill the fuel pump, or the PAT (Passive Anti Theft) system, or any other electrical system intermittently and really confuse the owner. Will report back what happened. Thanks again.

  • @edanderson8274
    @edanderson8274 10 лет назад

    Had the same issue on 1996 4.0 liter XLT Explorer. It was same ground wire that caused intermittent crank and not start issue from wire on bottom of power dist. box. Also had a a/c blower that quit from a ground under power dist. box. Found that out after chasing wires all over under hood. For some reason, older Ford's dist. box's seem to develop problems there. Thanks for the tip!

      @ndcouey70  10 лет назад

      Thanks for the view and comment. No lie, Ford laid an egg on the wiring of these vehicles. The shame of it is that they are great little trucks and the little bit of coin they saved on wiring could have made them exceptional trucks.

  • @ndcouey70
    @ndcouey70  12 лет назад +1

    Thanks for the view and comment. The fast idle circuit is controlled by the ECU computer if memory serves me. Another thing that might cause the issue you describe is a dirty mass airflow sensor. "I'm sure there are a few other things that could also do it like the throttle position sensor and camshaft position sensor" The little trucks run great when they run right, but can really make you want to scream at times. First thing I would do is unplug the ECU and spray the pins with contact cleaner.

    • @ndcouey70
      @ndcouey70  8 лет назад

      No idea on the ECU fuse blowing. I'm not a mechanic, but my best guess would be a different issue, possibly camshaft position sensor, throttle position sensor, or the impact sensor thing under the carpet on passengers side floorboard if it's shutting your rig totally down when you give it gas. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me see's your comment and chimes in.

  • @ndcouey70
    @ndcouey70  11 лет назад +2

    Thanks Jeremy. Great point about bridging the relay to drain the tank. I think Ford just went cheap on the wiring and everywhere there is a severe bend it ends up breaking inside the insulation which allows it to gap jump and make contact at times but other times not. Mechanically they are solid rigs, but the electrical woes make them unattractive.

    I have a 95 Ford Ranger 4 cylinder 5 speed and mine was doing the same thing not cranking or it will go dead while I was driving it. Long story short and after many many parts and money spent come to find out it was a wire that had come unattached underneath the fuse box.. Attached it no further problems. And it was not blowing my relay switch but it was blowing the 30 switch that's closest to the relay. We Bridge the switch with piece of foil and it cranked and that's what gave him the idea to look up under the entire fuse box and he found that the wire one of the wires was disconnected or barely hanging on
