  • I have made a new video that clears up some confusion about the connections on the starter relay here: • Ford Point type Igniti...
Unfortunately youtube does not allow the update of a video where you can retain the view count. So the suggestion was to make a new video and link to it in the original.
Many people have had problems troubleshooting their 1960s era Ford ignition systems. This video hopefully will provide an understanding how a points and condenser ignition system works.
Be sure to use the identification of the connections on your starter relay as they may be in different positions from the examples shown. I have added a warning overlay at the beginning that will describe several types of starter relays.

We need more people with this sort of knowledge I'm a young mechanic and listening to a real voice is heaps better but the fact that you went through the effort to write script and to have a robot say it shows your dedication I aspire to be like you

dont worry about the pauses Richard. The information value is what matters and you are giving it out for free. Thank you for that! I do appreciate that you are trying to accommodate everyone!

Your a life saver I’m having trouble on a 1972 ford f100 v8 and know you solved my problem I can get it started by grabbing the starter cable and directly connecting it to the battery but every time I try and start it inside with the key nothing happens thanks again god bless

Great video, but I think you are doing great without the script reader. They don't have to watch the video if they don't like it. Your knowledge has helped me more than you know. Don't stop the videos!

Thank You Richard. This is a useful video. I understand that 12 volts are applied for a stronger start and that 12 volts tended to overheat the coil. This is why the normal run circuit goes through a ballast resistor and normally supplies only 9 volts to the coil. But in the 60 years since then, certainly various plastics and other materials have become good enough to simplify this circuit to only use 12 volts with no ballast resistor. What are your thoughts on this? Does 12v chew up points faster or cause other issues?
Im rewiring an old Ford Taunus v4 and was thinking I’d just keep it simple. Plus I have not located a ballast resistor / resistor wire and need to buy a new coil anyway. This my first motor with points ignition.

Hello Richard. The battery on my F150 4.9 Cid 300, the battery gets too hot and is stalling, I have to wait for it to cool down and it will start again. I wonder if I can get a bigger Starter Relay, one built for an F350 may not overheat the battery. Thank you.

Hi I liked your work behind through the Microsoft video…I have a 1960 Thunderbird 352 and for two years can not figure out the reason(s) for why the charging system refuses to charge.
I have replaced the generator rebuilt twice, the new regulator twice, the new coil is replaced, the new battery and getting ready to put a new regulator a third time because it stopped working. The only thing I didn’t do is change the starter relay and starter. I need your help. Can you do a video on the old charging systems of the ‘60’s?
I’m trying to save the integrity of which it was intended without updating it with an alternator.
    Thanks, Rob

Thank you for your video. This is a question about my car stalling after 30mins when it idles. I have a 1963 Ford Falcon Wagon. Its all
factory no upgrades. I have tested the ignition coil, my voltage at the coil when the
car is running is at roughly 10 volts at the positive lead. Their is only one wire attached to that lead when the car is running. Per the
falcon manual my old coil is within the parameters when taking an ohm reading. I am hoping to avoid installing a primary
resistance wire. I have the wiring diagram, the primary resistance wire location is in question, is it under the dash at the ignition switch?
The wire i bought is a long 3' wire. I also purchased a new ignition coil, it does not say "use with external resistance wire" on it. Can i use it? I like the way you talk.
