I have been a welder for over fifty years. For my hobby I have built drag race cars for as many years. I am very particular in my work on these cars. Still to this day, I build custom cars and trucks. I have seen seen some bad work, but you are a builder / fabricator that does excellent work. Your work is priceless !
Your skill level is so incredibly impressive, thank you for putting these videos together. It’s really cool to watch a master work at his craft and walk us through the process!!
I finally see someone with the same philosify when it comes to doing brakes and suspensions. A lot of owners I have known over the years used to ridicule me for doing cam bushings, and new slacks each brake job plus drums. Some of them would even chisel the brake lining off and rerivet cheap lining back on to save a few dollars. Your quality is about the best I have seen, using used frames and parts. You need to be teaching the next generation of techs at a votech center. Enjoy Memorial Day. Bill
@@j.c.smithprojects you would be an EXCELLENT instructor! Had an automechanics instructor at community College that was very adamant about doing things right, and he would swear like a sailor to make some of his points. But that was in 1978. Not many snowflake "angels" can take that anymore.
@@leejohnson6173 it depends all on preventive maintenance & how long the brakes last till next replacement. If the slacks, bushings & S can NEVER get greased till next brake job... they could be worn out by next brake job. Just saying....
Every time I watch one of your videos J.C. it makes me thankful I don’t live in the rust belt. Im no professional, but I can tell that every weld you burn in sits real flat and has great penetration every single time. That welder of yours is a great piece of kit. and the homemade brackets you made look perfect. See you in the next one👍
I agree with you. I came across him two days ago and can't stop watching him at work. A real professional and master, very knowledgable and working with his wife and how he explain things, is so cool ❤
I like your attention to detail when you’re building any projects you’re very thorough and nothing is left untouched and built to your highest standards. Thank you for sharing looking forward to seeing the next episode.
Holy crap JC....the sheer amount of work going into just that lift axle is mind blowing. Let alone the hundreds of hours you gotta have in the truck as a whole....this guy better have deep pockets. I know you said his budget was shot many videos ago and you're into this project deep outta personal pocket...I hope he can get you squared away.
Thank U 4 bringing us along J.C., your fabrication skills are A1 first class! I was surprised this trk. only has a 12k lb. steer axle under it. Plz work safely my friend.
dont mean to sound like a broken but it is such a joy to watch someone who cares so much about the quality and end result of a projuct thanks so much for sharing the video
Great video J.C.Smith really enjoy watching you do the frame stretch on this truck. One more part almost completed the lift axle. Looking forward to your next video on this truck stay safe J.C. Smith.
Well done on new brackets Over the year's I have been watching you, with all the old part's you have, you have saved yourself lots of cash by making stuff out of scrapped vehicles. This in it self can pay for materials you had to buy and make a small profit and help pay bill's.
Thanks for another great video on this project, I have a feeling by the time you are done with this build the original one won't get it's rebuild any time soon. A, you won't want to deal with this garbage again and B, the guy won't be able to afford it anyway, so it'll do you a big favor getting out of it. Yeah I get what time and parts are worth doing this project, I just put 3K of parts in a 1/2 ton truck of mine and a $120 an hour for a morning of somebody else's shop time for a couple things I couldn't do myself . That would of been another huge bill on top if I hadn't done most of it on the side in my spare shop time. Take care.
33:27 needling your work is good. That peens the surface, pinning a weld is good because it relieves stresses built up and makes the weld less susceptible to stress fractures. If you go look at how they work the welds on Battleship Texas (drydocked currently, with videos online) you can see them weld, and then needling their welds as they go.
You keep saying "I am not a welder"... Well yes you are. You are the one that is holding the gun and doing the work. I agree it is nice to have friends with the knowledge but I have to believe you have soaked up quite a bit of that knowledge too. I mean to look at your welds they appear to have been poured in place. No my friend don't sell yourself short. Damn fine fab work and welding...
This has been such a detailed video series.....love it but i worry the owner will not appreciate the work and the quality when he gets the bill.....hopefully he will realise that cost is soon forgotten but quality never is long term....great work 👌
Can't wait for rest of drop axle install. Have a project that will involve a drop axle... or 2! 😆. And they are used axles... but in a limited use capacity (ag)...
I think the this job deserves a plaque on the frame that lets everyone know who built it. I think that it would increase the resale value considerably.
@@j.c.smithprojects obviously, you take pride in your work and you should. My father always told me to be willing to sign my work no matter how insignificant it might seem. Good job JC!
Every once in a while, open both the welder and the plasma cutter's boxes and throw some compressed air at them to blow away the dust (make sure you're not blowing any water inside them tho). All that dust metalized and a bad idea to be left inside.
Love the videos! You’ve forgotten more about setting up a truck than I, or most folks, will ever know. I don’t suppose that it would do a bit of good to mention that you should wear gloves when doing any kind of metal fabrication 🤔? I like the Black Stallion drivers gloves. Light, pretty good dexterity but decent protection.
Re; the lift axle pressure control panel. Some states frown on the pressure control being mounted inside the cab. The actuation switch about has to be within easy reach of the vehicle operator, but not the pressure control. Might be worth checking out.
For not being a welder you can stick metal together pretty good. I wish i had thaf skill i guess i need to buy a welder and find time to practice. If your still looking for the air bags call Toledo Spring they usually have a good selection in stock. Not sure if they do shipping or not but if not i can help you get them shipped to you
So I gave up on a lift axle after what I thought it was gonna hit the drive shaft but now thinking it may of been sitting to high. Dang wish would of looked at that more before gave up on that project. I was thinking since it was single axle and drive shaft comes down more it was the issue.
Hey JC, question, even if that lift axle was in great shape and had the correct mounting height for this truck, you would still had to cut and modify for the new frame width due to the outside "L" stiffeners added? That turned out extremely nice, great job!
My driveline guy says a balanced driveline is a cheap driveline. He pounds them straight with a hammer. Considering my half cab crane Carrier rig drives as smooth as a BMW with 3 drivelines he made i believe him, wasn't all new parts either.
I have a bunch of Snap-On screwdriver handles that do/did that. Got them all warrantieed. At least the Snap-On dealers were embarrassed. Craftsman don't care.

this is actually intended to be a pusher axle. mounted in front of the drive axle. the dip in the axle tube is there to accommodate the drive shaft.
