Replacing the top canvas for a Mercedes CLK Convertible A209 is not an easy task and it is expensive as well. There 2 more options that can fix this design issue temporarily or permanently, in this video I used the easiest and the most cost effective way of fixing this problem. Please comment your experience and feedback so others can use as well. Thank you.
My '03 CLK top shrank after washing and the seam began separating below the corners on both sides. I used Scotch-Weld Rubber Toughened Instant Adhesive RT5000B black cyanoacrylate. After 24 hours curing, I reinforced the seams with 4-inch wide black canvas repair tape for outdoor gear. Make a paper pattern first to ensure fit. I firmly hand pressed the tape in place and secured it by rubbing the entire tape surface firmly and thoroughly with a smooth stylus, particularly on each seam edge. It's fairly unobtrusive, considering the option is a bit of glue bleeding despite careful masking and challenges matching the old seam fit perfectly. Will waterproof it and see how it holds up for this winter and next summer's 100 degree temps.
That is an excellent repair. Will be interesting to see how it stands up to regular usage , going up and down, sun and rain, etc. Can you do a 6 month review of the repair to show how it has stood up to use. What do you clean the roof with, would a very light oil do any good on the roof, help to keep it soft? Also could you use a black boot polish to recolour the repair and roof. Excellent video.
I definitely will post a video later to update about all the repairs and the overall condition. For cleaning and protection I have heard 303 Fabric Cleaning and protectant kit works great.
$20 professional stitch kit on Amazon. I will learn that special stitch they use and put the top down 1/2 way and stitch the top to the current shrunken size to reduce tension on it. It only needs 12” max. I’m confident it will be better long term.
Very interesting video! Do you perhaps also have a solution for that waterbag coming out besides the window in the back? Also a very known, and as I heard, expensive repair?
GOOD VID....I DID MY ROOF ABT 2 YEARS AGO WITH GLUE AND STITCHES. JUST A SUGGESTION....TRY FABRIC SPRAY PAINT FROM WALMART IN COLORS...DOES WONDERS FOR THE TOP
this will be excellent... I have to remove the main cylinders and fix my rear window regulator ( While there replace both) my passenger seat belt presenter isnt working and my drivers (US) seat belt is sluggish maybe can rewind that while in there and if I can get headliner down to stitch up the top would be EXCELLENT @@BenzAddiction
@@bobbyz23Easy for you to say shoulda coulda woulda. You only sound like a blowhard and a know-it-all. If you've fixed your canvas top with Gorilla and it worked then say so. If not, then why would you say anything at all. I'm not sold on Gorilla products.
@@bobbyz23 Should coulda woulda. Blah Blah Blah. If you've used Gorilla for the same repair and it worked then say so. If not why would you say anything at all. Gorilla products have not given me good results.
Just finished the glue up and its pretty much cured but waiting til tomorrow.. I used a product called Gear Aid Seam Grip which had great reviews for this kind of work.. on amazon. Its UV protected and of course waterproof too. After applying it, it really looks like shoe goo which may would work great too .. i dont know about shoe goo's UV protection however.. Ill definatly be watching for video on how to remove headliner to sew up that fabric for good... Ill be replacing my pneumatics also so I can actually let down my top but unfortunately for me... 3 weeks into owning this car recently, the rear quarter panel regulator broke... will be doing that soon too...

I’m thinking of stitching it. It’s only 11” split so far. The glue I tested on fabric seems to come apart after clamping 20 hrs

Muy buena la intención. A mi me ocurrió lo mismo. Clk 350 2009 . LO envié a coser de lado a lado y resuelto el problema. 👌🇵🇷🤗
Yes, then again you have to take it off completely. Also after 20 years most of the taping and strings are gone...

How long did the Helmar Glue last?
As soon as sun hit it, it melted.
@@BenzAddiction Should have used Gorilla fabric glue
@@BenzAddiction I'm sorry you went to all that effort for that result...
