I flew an impromptu race-course at three different camera uptilt angles: 45, 55, and 60 degrees. Obviously, the quad flew faster at higher uptilt, but what other effects were there? This video shows my stick inputs and OSD (voltage, amps, etc.) so you can see for yourself.
Why it's harder to maintain altitude at high uptilt:

60 years of experience and your smoke stopper still saved my butt! Thx for the tip.
Smoke stopper. Don't plug in without one (unless you're actually going to fly LOL).
Checking in everyday to see if there is a review of the Hawk 5 :D
Still waiting
well looks like its time to upgrade my uptilt since my crashes arent half as spectacular at 40 degree uptilt as they would be at 60 degree uptilt :P did you leave a link where to buy uptilt at? :P i totally want to buy some now!!!
oh wait i found a video about a store selling uptilt, ruclips.net/video/dQw4w9WgXcQ/видео.html buying some now :P
@@MindOfBoomBoom you got me
Joshua your skills have come so far very impressive. Appreciate you reaching out to everyone getting into the hobby or those furthering their skills along the way. You're definitely our quad Guru when it comes to just about anything we need to know. Keep it up brother very much appreciated.
Dam fast, now I`ve got a drop in my trousers. Very good flying. Thumbs up!!!
Nothing like having a place to fly. My house sits on about 3 acres of mixed trees and field. Plenty to keep you busy. Only climbed about half my trees so far.
jeramie bentley to get your quad out of them? 😂
PropStrike RC (psst - that was the joke, dude. ;-))
UrLawyer lol it’s Monday, gimme a break 🤣
I've lost 10 lbs since i started FPV. Canceled my planet fitness black card.
Joshua i have a challenge for you, fly with 90° uptilt ! 😃
Omigirl just posted a video of this they also did 110 degrees it was nuts
who needs yaw spin!
I have also noticed a difference in where your camera is positioned makes a difference in how much angle you have ie if you have a frame where where the cam is closer to the Center of the frame you tend to want more uptilt than if it’s on line with the front motors
Very impressive sir, seriously checked my RUclips playback setting twice to make sure I was on "Normal" speed, that thing is cooking!
Greetings Mr. Bardwell, I come to you hat in hand in hopes of solving a problem I'm having with my Emax Hawk 5. I'm relatively new to the game of drone piloting but am a fast enthusiast. I have to also say I've learned a lot watching your you tube videos, from using simulators, learning to fpv, beginning acro flying, etc. Having picked up an Eachine EX2 mini, JJRC Heron X9 and a couple of other toy grade quads in a years time, I figured I'd go ahead and get real and purchased the Hawk 5. However, after several months of wrestling with it still no maiden flight. The problem I'm having about $500 in after purchasing quad, a Taranis QX7 and all the peripherals, is I can't get the control sticks to register in Betaflight. The switch and beeper settings move the graphic bars just fine in the Receiver tab but I get nothing for throttle, yaw, pitch and roll when I manipulate the sticks. Everything else checks out in the other tabs, ports, config, etc. and the motors spin up just fine too but after meticulously creating several clean models it does the same thing each time. Apparently the the flight controller is receiving commands from the XM+ receiver since the AUX channels are working. I also just bought a Tinyhawk Freestyle just to ensure it isn't a problem with the transmitter. The Freestyle worked swimmingly minutes out of the box and flies great. I'm stumped so I opened a service ticket with Emax and the nice gent working with me although diligent seems close to his wits end calling the problem "very strange", so I'm hoping you may have an idea or ideally just know what the solution might be as you are heralded in the community as the go to guy for knowing it all regarding UAVs. Any ideas O wisened sir? Your grey matter would be greatly appreciated in this matter. Thanks much.
Doug, please email me joshuabardwell@gmail.com
Thnx JB, took mine out yesterday, really surprised, soo light compared to my usual birds, fast and smooth
I have a hawk 5 and I made the mistake of buying a micro eagle cam . It's a great camera, but the connector bumps into the FC at 30 degrees (ITS DRIVING ME NUTS). I plan on doing some drilling to move the camera forward, but I'm afraid I'll lose my camera protection. I still think everyone getting into FPV should buy this. It's a little powerful for a beginner, but it's durable as hell and you can't beat the value. There were some OMG crashes that only resulted in a slightly bent prop. Just buy the thing. It's smooth and fast out of the box. This video is what sold me on it. After flying for a couple weeks, I can tell you that this flies even better than the simulator. It turns like it's on rails. That's what people keep saying, and it's true. Very easy to control. I do notice slight prop wash at max throttle punchouts, but I'll be dealing with that later while watching another Bardwell vid. : )
Looked to me like cornering, response, punchout, and propwash were also affected. Love the content, thanks.
Propwash is affected because the quad is simply moving faster. Cornering is affected because the altitude control is way more sensitive to throttle and pitch input at higher uptilt.
Joshua Bardwell Farm Race Track. Just get it into the simulators plx. Awsome to watch, JB.
MarreMachine it's in Liftoff! 😁
Damn I’ve noticed a huge improvement in yo skills that was rippin
never really seen you fly like that either you're getting really better or I'm just used to watching you do tutorials this was great I loved watching you fly and I love watching you land that was something!!
YIKES! I'd be more shocked but after your Matty video mentioning his 60 degrees of camera up tilt, I tried it on the Free Rider FPV Simulator that YOU taught me how to fly quads on. THANKS!!. And was amazed. A tad horrified, At those tilt angles, you are COMMITTED to going fast when lapping a track. If you try and slow down, you can''t see where you're going. Nitpicking, it doesn't make the quad go faster. It just makes it have to go faster when holding altitude at the 55 degree pitch angle t that will appear level to the pilot. And altitude doesn't get tricky because of the throttle sensitivity, it's because when you have up tilt greater than 45 degrees, more of the lift vector from the props starts to go in the horizontal (go faster) direction, and less goes in the vertical (go up) direction. At 90 degrees, no amount of throttle is going to make you go up. At zero degrees, no amount of throttle will make you go faster. So now fine throttle movements aren't going to do nearly as much as with much less tilt, but yeah, it's gonna be really sensitive to pitch, and you might need to change pitch for a quick altitude adjustment, which could make for some nasty behavior with overshoot, and the pilot induced oscillations, as the pilot tries to correct. So fine altitude control is a bitch. You should have done some acro moves, because like your other video showed, it can put maneuver's in a different world, because as you pointed out, you're looking into looping maneuvers, to make rolls appear like rolls even takes some finesse, because of how much roll turns into yaw from the camera view, and when climbing vertical obstacles like buildings, a steep camera angle makes it look like you're flying up the buildingn, rather than climbing in a hover next to it. And flying up it is a cool illusion. When I first saw Matty do that loop following the square underside of that bridge, I was like WTF?
QUESTION: WHAT UP TILT IS GENERALLY USED AT THE TOP LEVELS OF GP RACING? PRETTY HIGH BY NECESSITY, BUT THIS HIGH? OH AND THE GUY BELOW IS TOTALLY WRONG. PEOPLE ARE WATCHING BECAUSE OF YOUR GOOD LOOKS, BECAUSE THE CONTENT IS PRETTY LAME ONLY SO SO.. YOU FLY GOOD TOO. THE SKIRT LIKE OUTFIT PROBABLY ACCOUNTS FOR HALF YOUR SUBSCRIBERS!! LOL I have an extremely sarcastic sense of humor, BTW. LOL
Uptilt varies - Thomas Bitmatta flies closer to 45, and shreds. Evan Turner has been recently experimenting with sub-70, but flies that much or more. ~70 is Shaun Taylor's happy place. The high by necessity is that when a lot of the lap is sticks to the plastic, and only +/- 35degrees vertical FOV, you need more uptilt to see where you're actually going.
Great proximity Rippin', Liftoff does a really good job at letting you change camera tilt. I tried 50% tilt and I crashed on takeoff, Liftoff has been a great way to practice tilt changes.
Nice, I usually lower my camera angle down on a tight track and raise it on a fast track
Damn Joshua I didn't know you had it in you. I'm liking the idea more up tilt. Way more aggressive. Thanks man.
Hey Josh.... I think you do a great job on your videos.... I've been real busy and haven't been following the hobby to much but now have just a little more time.... so anyways I wanted to comment on your video of camera tilt since I just saw your video.... I've been flying at 72degrees and I must say it is the most controllable of the tilts once you get used to the speed... please try it out... I just bought a Hawk 5 and I'm re-drilling the holes to achieve this angle.... Happy Flying!
at 60 degrees plus, pin the throttle to max and then its all 'right stick flying', roll to control direction, pitch to control height... the left stick is just to keep the picture horizontal for your youtube viewers ;) Nice flying!
Something I'd be interested to see would be a lens comparison between the classic 2.5mm GoPro lens and these new micro ones to find out which are equivalent.
Camera tilt is more than most think, if you have a very high angle, and you obviously are flying so you can see straight the whole quad reacts seemingly different due to the angle of the quad.
Uptilt does not make the quadcopter fly differently. It makes the pilot fly differently
Duh...
Duh...
No, I don’t think so. My thinking is the more that camera is tilted the more you, as the pilot, fly at a much steeper forward pitch angle. The more forward pitch angle you have, your Yaw, and Roll control act upon the quad differently. It’s the axis that changes flight control.
Duh...
Duh...
Okay, now landing at a 55 degree uptilt can be challenging! That’s why we need the Bardwell bifocal camera lens, whereupon you the pilot can see a lower tilt for landing!
I'd be down to see a DVR pull of the same.
Wow, you have jumped up a level or two on your flying skills. Impressive. Good job
Josh! I don't know if it's just me but it seems like your piloting skills have increased 10 fold in the past 2 months. Great flying brother. 😎
Great flying show, Joshua! Awesome! 😀
Joshua, thanks for all your help..👍
I was wondering how you blended in the stick overlay. for me this is a great tool for analyzing my own flying. I'm struggling with turns and holding altitude, and I'm not sure what I'm doing on the sticks when these problems appear
so, can you share the secret about this overlay?
I can't wait to get mine in the air once and for all , you ripping it , nice property man. keep up the good work
I keep mine around 55-60 degrees. I just cant bring myself to oitch forward to accelerate hard and I start ballooning corners at lower tilt, I found when I had my camera angle up to those higher angles I was a lot more consistent in keeping the quad low to the ground and at the same altitude around corners for how much roll / yaw I seemed to mix.
I can keep a steady altitude with lower cam angles but I just cant really pitch the nose forward for whatever reason, its like a mental block, I just fly to the speed the camera angle carries as I seem to just prefer keeping an even level horizon and not tipping forward
Hey Josh! its been over a year since you reviewed the EMAX HAWK 5! Would you still recommend it? Would it go well with the Jumper T16?...Richard
Yes it's been a great quad everyone loves it, bt I'd recommend building your own so you know how to fix it when you crash it and break it.
Yeah JB rip those packs!
I can't wait for the review!
Could you do a quick once over of the baby hawk 3in? (i'm thinking of getting one and i'm wondering what batteries I should get as well) Thanks!
i keep mine on about 40 deg used to do about 50 but after using 40 i love it
Dude I like to see 90deg tilt!! Would love to see Josh ripping around at that angle!
try 90 degrees in a sim it's awful lol, everything feels so wrong
90 degrees is fun, as long as you remap the controls a bit (yaw becomes aileron). It's like flying a plane, or more accurately, a missile.
Dude, you need some vertical component to thrust... 89 degree uptilt.
Jesus man, send it! that 45 degree run was nice :)
Love the audio woshes, too.
To me, the steeper camera angle should make for a faster quad. But from this video it appeared to me that you’re far more comfortable at 45-50 degrees Cam angle. I have tried flying with steeper angle but it just puts me out big time. Dial it back, and end up flying faster! Great flying Bardwell!!!!
Yup. Higher angle is only faster if you can stay smooth.
Joshua Bardwell 100%. Keep up the flying man. Would be great to see some more race footage on your channel. Your doing great
Hot flying! How many quads have "landed" inside the woodshed I wonder?
Damn good flying bro, love the bug splat, looked like a big'n
Nice flying Josh!
Fuck yes. Great ending, I liked the dicussion, then the "see for yourself" awesome vid Joshua 👌
Wow outstanding performance! Great flying. And I think somebody should call the lipo authorities because you are obviously abusing those batteries minute and a half, destroying them. Keep up the great work I love it
Yeah this definitely made the Thunderpower cry.
That's a tough batt in the 45 degree clip
Emax seem to be trend setters with motors in my opinion. First to use n52 magnets and now they are probably the first to stop using them in pursuit of a smoother performing motor for ultralights.
Can't wait to get my hawk 5 in. Great video JB!
Awesome flying ridiculous how good you are
Wow, Pretty fast! Did you want to race when you started? I do even though I know Im not fast enough it would be fun to see where I stand with other with about the same experience.
my personal opinion is the more up tilt the better for me to control n less yaw input for racing
Just added to my wish list.. Time to work some Overtime$$$.. Good video as always... Cheers 🍻🍻🍻
Joshua, what are you recording from? The Hawks built in camera? Or do you have a GoPro sitting on top? Or, is it from your goggles?
I just ordered my Hawk and I need goggles too, but was wondering how this crisp, clear video is being recorded.
So many questions, as I’m completely new to all of this...
Thanks and great video as always!
This is GoPro footage, mounted on top of the Hawk. FPV footage is nowhere near as nice as this.
perfect flying and track ...
Rewatched and realized you explained the yaw at the beginning of video.
i have been using 35deg for a long time but since trying steeper angles on the velocidrone simulator I'm finding 45deg makes throttle and altitude easier to manage, hope it translates into reality when i get the time to test it.....
Is the hawk 5 still relevant? Found a good deal. I normally run Five33 switchback but for a good deal maybe a practice drone?
Sweeeet! So far I've only flown this bird in our open field while I try to keep up with my Hawk 5..sadly I'm still flying way behind my "Bad Girl". Fantastic flying Joshua! We've had such crappy weather here in "Bravo Foxtrot" Colorado It's been to windy to get in any meaningful practice. Now for my Cam tilt question, Since the guy that bought our land took down all the trees, I now find it to be very difficult to keep my situational awareness at high tilt angels any tips on that?
And to what Space Cowboy FPV posted, That's how these Colorado people are, bloody rude and worse. This month is crawling by and I have to part way through May until I can blow this pop stand for a better state and the house I'm paying rent on just to keep. (Yea this move is costing me lots of good money I could be spending on...hum..erm.. More FPV gear :)
Thanks on the great video on what my new "Bad Girl"
Some pretty nice flying there JB :-D
Awesome flying !
Nearly no propwash and it looked like you were flying into a trampoline going around the shed... firing right out of the turns!
Looks great! I thought you were going to roast another pack there for a bit on that last run!
From a Noobs point of view. The hardest part of flying with a lot of up tilt, and I'm running about 45 degrees, is nailing the landing or as I call it controlled crashing. I'm sure I'll get it with more stick time.
just preordered one via your affiliate link. Keep up the good work :-)
Thank you very much :-)
Dear Josh, Did I miss Hawk5 review ?! I cant find it in your channel !!
please talk about it and New FrSky X-LIte Transmitter please, thanks
excellent, you have to factor in that your balls have a constant stream of cool air there by avoiding the hot balls / bad decisions scenario.
That's the most balls I've seen you rip in a while. Nice work. Are you done with the "you're going to learn something today?"
GREAT FLYING That is one fast drone!!! GREAT CHANNEL!!
👍👍👍
That’s is great! Does it appear faster also because the angle of the GoPro is the same so we get more ground in shot?
The angle of the GoPro is the same and that definitely might be affecting things. But you can take a stopwatch if you want and see which laps are fastest.
You didn't mention 15 degree uptilt at all? RIght now I'm at 30, and feel like I should either be at 15 or 45.
Hello Joshua, thanks for your video. I would like to see in your review, some things i'm interested in. First, do you use the stock receiver ( XSM+) on your hawk 5 ? Then, can you share with us your configuration ( filtering settings + PIDS ). I bought this qwad last week but as I cannot use telemtry I can't tune it on the field and i'm not so satisfied with the stock pids. And last, what Gopro mount do you use and do you turn on the stabilization on your Gopro ?
Thanks for your work :)
This is 100% stock PIDs. IMO they are great and do not need tweaking at all. What don't you like about them?
I don't use stabilization on the GoPro at all. I don't think it's good for FPV.
I heard high frequency oscillations from 75%-100% throttle. But maybe it is normal because my gopro is not well attached as I didn't receive my special gopro mount with screws. Okey thanks for your comments, can't wait to see your review about this qwad :)
That thing duckin diggs cant wait for mine and question are all theses flights with emax hawk 5 i've heard that you are limited on the camera angle with that model is that true? (was the 60 degree flight the hawk 5 as well???)
Seems like you got a lot better since you went full time
Great video. I need to get one of this little racing fpv quads. I’m new to quadcopters in general just got a mavic Air about a month ago and love flying it in sport mode but really hate the delay and don’t want to crash it. What googles and transmitter do you use? This video feedback is amazing.
That also, was an action cam recording the flight. The feed in the fatsharks is not that clear. Nor is it true HD. The Hawk5 comes with a dipole antenna. 200mw.
That video is not what you see. Its that bottom static covered image with the battery voltages is what you see (though he has his cropped, its not a little bar, its pretty much the same as the Go-Pro, but super static covered and low resolution). Lower resolution = lower bandwidth required = lower latency for a fixed bandwidth.
sounds like tires are squealing when you go around corners with that 55 degree
JB I NEED UR HELP!! I have QX7 my channel endpoints set up perfectly at first. Now their off by quite a bit. I know how to adjust it but I don't have enough. I went in and changed the rxrange on those but I won't to know if there's another fix. Thanks, love ur support to the FPV community.
If you haven't yet, try re-running the stock calibration (Long press menu, then page ~7x to get to it).
Yes I have done that too. I'm just not sure what's up with it. Thanks for the input
Thank God for muscle memory! 60deg+, could help trailing the breadcrumbs to find your way home.
Nice vid!
Top gun pilot yoo. Crazy skillz man.
You were blasting around there matey, your going to need a bigger garden soon. To quote Stew that thing RIPPED,, Just check her out at banggood she not only looked and sounded great in your vid, she looks very cool and comes with the Magnum F4 Tower System and Dshot 600 esc'c .... This Beast has gone to the top of my to buy list. Great flight JB
Hi, i have been following your channel for quite some time now...and i would like to ask you what battery size would you use/recomend for a 150mm quad?
Thank you sir. Very informative. Also nice rippin' !
I was hoping you would try 75° LOL. I run 60 normally and I did 75 the other day and it was insane
what battery are you running there? I'm impressed at the lack of sag even toward the end of the pack.
Thunderpower Adrenaline 1600.
Joshua Bardwell 1560 out of a 1600? Did it live to fly another day?
You get more drag on the camera angles than others. Plus you are looking at different fields of view and fly different.
Loving your videos
Dude! You need to try the same setup with 5s!!!
Ya just gave "ghost branch" a whole new meaning!!! Looked like you went through it like it was a ghost???😱
Pretty sure that was a bug.
I have that one & she is one monster ripper!! Did you fly it with the stock Pids? Looking forward to the review of it
Totally stock.
Joshua Bardwell Sweet. Thanks much
Was that a Bug that was destroyed on the camera lens? 😂 55 degrees of pain!
is that the shack you keep your bad behaving quads in? trick to flying slower with high uptilt is to focus on the bottom of the picture.
Hey, can you test and review Eachine EV800D goggles ?
Check my Ultimate FPV Shopping List at my web site. I recommend them.
Hi! Is it yourself fying? Nice one!
That thing is insane! Can anyone tell me why I gey battery low warnings when I go full throttle even with a fully charged battery? I'm using tattu 1550mah 70c 4s and funfly 1500mah 100c 4s. Both do the same thing
While I'm here I noticed you barely touch your yaw but slam your roll. Rewatched and realized you commented at beginning of video.
You were ripping pretty good dude. Get some gates in that field!
SWEET JESUS! JB.... you gotta start racing....
Nice flying!
I want this quad. It looks great on every single review I've seen. Too bad I can't afford it right now :-(
Wow!
You were going pretty,,, fast !!!
My Hawk5 gone crazy, when i arm it just jumps and flips over, or if not i can fly for 10 seconds and then goes crazy rotating and failsafe. What could it be?
