I hear the part about the trained gorilla’s and the top plate screws! Mine were on so tight, that it wedged the left-side FPV camera tab into the top plate slot, to the point I couldn’t get it to budge. So, I had to take the camera screws out, and work the FPV camera holder out from the bottom of the frame. Once I finally got it loose, I just lightly sanded that left tab so that it fit to the top plate properly! That all said, this is a very nice quad! However, well, let’s not talk about how ridiculous it is to get the RSSI to work with the XM+ receiver.
Just got mine! It bound ok with old DJT D8 but it says "disabled" when I switch into arm in Betaflight. Off Betaflight it chirps when armed but no motor action. I remember now how fast changing tech can be frustrating. Uploading a video right now.
This is really excellent! I just received my hawk yesterday and I’m awaiting batteries, etc. this is my first BNf and it is freaking awesome! Can’t wait to get this set up with my QX7 and have everything dialed in… By the way, what kind of go pro mount are you using? Or, are you using one at all?
Great Video review as always Thank You .this one just made my top3 pick ,before I choose what quad I buy Being new to the hobby … What did you mean about the antennas ,Left Handed /Right Handed ? . about the receiver ,it can be changed for another that works with my remote easily ,yes ? What with the FPV power feed creating interference ,should I add my own micro VRegulator boards in ? You have soo many vids I have to watch to learn basic & alots more .Thank You as many times as you have vids =D
If you're new to FPV then please see the 'Introduction to FPV' and 'FPV playlists. Lots of details and tutorials in there that help the newer pilot. The answer to your questions are: 1) it's how the antennas are polarised - have the same on both ends. 2) Yes it can 3) If you pick a decent VTX and mount it with care, no. :D
Thank You for the reply and yes I am looking true your video's and learning alots . There is megaton of knowledge in them for that reason I don't look too many too quickly .a slower pace is better for me so that I remember what I learned .Sometime I need the information quickly so I ask about it . On another subject Contratulations your getting closer & closer to 100K subs , It shows that your work is just awesome and of exceptional quality ,Thank You , Cheers
with all these uppercrust components I'm a little surprised they went with an xm+ Also for this much $ a new feature like camera control would be nice. I'm using a CLR4S with that it's great. Great review!
I'm a big fan of the CLRacingF4S here, the latest build used one and I'm planning to pop one into the next build too - they work great (if you're using the V1.4 or later ;) )
Painless360 I've got V1.2 is there a drawback with that? Ah I see death roll with certain esc's None here but I do have intermittent arming failure..... Armattan has been troubleshooting this
The main problem was the issue with ESCs and a flip of death. Only certain ESCs caused it. On the V1.4 there are some improvements so this doesn't happen..
Nice review as always! So whats the experience? Do you think these new LS 2206-2300kv motors are amp hungry? Can I use Kingkong 5040 tri blades with them? (have dozens of spares) Will order Avan props later. Can you also please suggest me a budget-friendly Lipo to use with those emax motors? I've 4 of them. Thank you!
Hey, I'm really new to this, where can I find a backup of the Betaflight 3.2.2 stock configuration for the Emax Hawk 5? I flashed 3.3 onto it and lost all the tunings and settings. Thanks
Painless360 i meant the stick feel... i know the super rates will make it faster. I felt the stock setup i think the rc expo slows the response. Maybe ill lower it from 0.10 to 0.02.
I just looked again at BF and my stick assignment on controller are way off. throttle is roll! and throttle up is pitch. My tx is standard mode 2 the 5" hawk rx channels are different. Fully confused now looking for hammer soon. LOL! Maybe receiver mode issue.
Well I got it set to AETR1234 It defaulted when I reset settings to brushed esc protocol now I can't find the Hawk Pro cli dump to reset it to factory. I tried dshot 300. Not sure I want to fly it now as reset may not be Hawk Pro settings?
Bought one after seeing Kabab's review. Was surprised because he said it came pre installed with butter flight, but as you saw it doesn't. Since my other birds are all running butter, including my Kopis1, I installed it on the hawk 5. I actually like the stock tune better than the one in beta flight. It feels more locked in. What's your opinion on the hawk versus the Kopis1? And keep up the great work! Aloha!
The Kopis 1 VTX is controllable with the OSD, LEDs, better options for mounting the antennas easily and larger camera mount. Both are great models and fly very well out of the box but the Kopis is a little heavier and easier to setup for a new pilot..
Painless360 I agree, Kopis is right of the box easier to fly and comes with very good components. Even at 50 bucks more, a better choice for novice flyers. Can be changed easily with a proper tune and motor/ prop combo for aggressive freestyle. The hawk is less forgiving, lighter and out of the box would appeal to racers. I put Dal T5046C's on mine and doing light freestyle on a 4s 1300 gets me about 5 minutes.
nbl23 rssi can only be given out via osd but you need to flash your xm+ with the newest firmware to get rssi values on channel 16. You also have to configure it in betaflight on your reveiver tab. Since the first 4 channels are roll, pitch, throttle and yaw your channel 16 will be aux12. So set rssi output to aux 12 and do the fw upgrade on the xm+ and you will have a working rssi output on your osd
See my videos in the Introduction to FPV series. Polarised antennas are polarised in either a ‘left hand’ or ‘right-hand’ direction. You need to make sure that both the FPV transmitter and the FPV receiver are using the same type for the best reception and range.. all of my antennas are right handed..
not always. bec matters (i see this quad's vtx 's input voltage is 5v), i have wraith32 v2 which have tons of capacity and filtering , but i get a lot of throttle noise when matek hv is connected directly to vbat (and no noise via onboard 9v). motors -2207 2500kv iflight ion. anyways, have just preordered this model, i want to try something lightweight floss-like with battery mount versatility (even thou consider myself as experienced builder. the machine is still needs to be completely reassembled before use though (().
I find the same thing on my builds - using something like a good 9v on-board voltage regulator avoids that need for lots (or any) capacitors. I avoid kit that means lots of extra ugly caps ;) Best of luck with your new purchase!
@Painless Jesus Christ m8 !!!! I cringed sooo much watching you remove those top screws .... lol. Looks like someone in China was off sick the day they did Torque wrench settings ... lol Surprisingly Tanky BNF.
That quad looks very nice! Looks like you put it through the paces, too! Thanks for posting this comprehensive review!
Nice looking quad very well built great video as usual thanks Lee

I've had an fc quit after hard crashes- sometimes the impact screws up the camera even though indirect. Sounds like a good quad.
Kevlar Battery Straps Mate!! Readily available now and very Cheap to boot ;-) I still haven't flown my Hawk 5 yet...
Thats a hott quad! Nice job as always Emax! Nice video as well to you sir! Will be purchasing asap!
That machine looks amazing 😉
Thanks. Why on minute 7:53, do not appear Maximum Arm Angle option?
Just got mine! It bound ok with old DJT D8 but it says "disabled" when I switch into arm in Betaflight. Off Betaflight it chirps when armed but no motor action. I remember now how fast changing tech can be frustrating. Uploading a video right now.
Please watch my Quadcopter building for beginners for all the setup steps. Best of luck!
I was hoping you were gonna review this model.thanks bud
Another great review there Painless !!
Thanks! :D
*Great Review! I've heard nothing but good things about the Hawk 5.*
I'm impressed with it. Thumbs up from me! :D
I didn’t use one. Such a fun model!
Really?!!! WOW! So, are you saying this is being recorded to your FPV goggles?
Saw this over on your THINGIVERSE and I noticed those PROPs ...... sweeped tips very nice !!!! Did it cut down on Vibrations ? ... Cheers
The biggest reduction in vibration you get on most builds is achieved by simply balancing the props. Happy flying!
I have read it can only be used in d8 mode on the taranis which is a pain in the arse as I’ve just updated to use the tbs crossfire
The receiver in this model? That’s not the case. D16 works fine..
How do you install spm4649t for Spektrum?
Im in.. gotta have one now.

My model would be approximately 570-620grams (all up weight with 70grams Action cam & 1500mah 4s)
Motors are fine, props seem to pull a little more than the DALPROPS I normally use..
Hey, I'm really new to this, where can I find a backup of the Betaflight 3.2.2 stock configuration for the Emax Hawk 5? I flashed 3.3 onto it and lost all the tunings and settings. Thanks
The rc expo makes me feel like the response was not quick enough. Removing the rc expo to 0.00 will make it respond faster yes?
It will, but upping the rates in Betaflight will too..
Painless360 i meant the stick feel... i know the super rates will make it faster. I felt the stock setup i think the rc expo slows the response. Maybe ill lower it from 0.10 to 0.02.
I'm having trouble with the antenna keeping it connected to the VTX. Can you show us how the best way to route that antenna
I don’t have he model as it has been given away as a prize. Best of luck!
I just looked again at BF and my stick assignment on controller are way off. throttle is roll! and throttle up is pitch. My tx is standard mode 2 the 5" hawk rx channels are different. Fully confused now looking for hammer soon. LOL! Maybe receiver mode issue.
It'll be the reciever channel mapping needs changing in Betaflight. See my builds...
Well I got it set to AETR1234
It defaulted when I reset settings to brushed esc protocol now I can't find the Hawk Pro cli dump to reset it to factory. I tried dshot 300. Not sure I want to fly it now as reset may not be Hawk Pro settings?
I usually show the Betaflight setting in my review of any model.. Best of luck...

I have a kopis 1 and now bought the hawk 5. How do you change the channel and power on this? no documentation that I can find yet. Also RSSI ?

Nice video was wondering how long it took to come in
'to come in'? Sorry, I'm not following..
Whoa look at ,Lee turning fancy pants :).
I am hoping they start selling the frame.
I want to install the unify pro v3 on the hawk5. Can someone post how to for this? Would be awesome!
See my quadcopter build series - I have over 10 on the channel, I've used TBS product in a few of them too. Best of luck..
You said that the pagoda is left and for left handed So i cannot use it? What did you mean about that?
See my videos in the Introduction to FPV series. Polarised antennas are polarised in either a ‘left hand’ or ‘right-hand’ direction. You need to make sure that both the FPV transmitter and the FPV receiver are using the same type for the best reception and range.. all of my antennas are right handed..
i see it has pretty clean fpv feed...
It sure is! If you're using a good regulator to power the FPV gear you don't need lots of capacitors..

Looks like a good deal for a bnf
Can you use a dsmx receiver on this Qwad??? Thanks
Yep, as long as it support SBUS..
Really nice model! Looks awesome! 😊
Would u happen to know the width of the arm?
No, sorry this has been given away as a Patreon prize recently..
I only have 3s batteries will this fly well on them?
It would, but not as well. If you're going to buy an expensive model like this, and spending an extra $15 on the battery is worthwhile.
I agree, looking at the options on Bangood and Hobby King.
What battery where you using?
1300mah 4S LIPO battery
@Painless

Surprisingly Tanky BNF.
I had the sound off for that bit so the grunting and swearing wasn't in the video too! :D
This in comparison to an armattan rooster....
It's a personal choice. I prefer the Rooster/Chameleon but then they have better antenna mounts and that Titanium cage for the camera..
@@Painless360 Rooster is dubbed the price
Great review, unfortunately as much as I enjoyed watching this video I just can't get excited about this quad. I just don't like the look.
They are selling different designs for the housing instead of that boring looked.
first
It Freestyles great, check out my edit! Would love some tips on how to improve!
