Maher [I assume], opposes the Tax cuts because 'they help the rich'
Ben says the Tax cuts will hurt him
Now if Maher really thought the tax cuts 'HELP the rich', and the tax cuts 'HURT Ben'
Then Maher would asssume that Ben is POOR
But because Maher concluded that Ben must be RICH, means he must not really think the tax cuts 'help the rich'
Or Maher must be thinking Ben is lying

I thought so too. Pretty sure it's not a matter of keeping up, but peer pressure. Maher went a little hard for a minute or two so he set the tone...kinda hard to be the first to applaude "the other guy" on a talk show like that. Got to give them both credit though. Shapiro kept his cool when Maher was getting hot, and I think Maher read that. It ended up being a really good interview. There's always *some* kind of common ground to be found, right?

It didn't age well for Shapiro either. Shapiro thought the damage done by Trump to the social fabric had already reached its climax at 6 months in, boy was he wrong about that. One attempted insurrection at the capital later. I do agree that Maher seems more polarized than Shapiro here though.

I love Bill acting like he really put it to Ben during this segment. This was easy sailing for Ben. Bill has avoided having him on the show for obvious reasons (his supernatural debating skills), and it's nice to see these two sit down finally.

Ben was back for the panel with Malcolm Nance. And Bill went on Ben's podcast. So, yeah ... I don't think Maher really avoided him. Easy sailing? Well he looked like he was backed into a corner, when he said Trump wasn't the thought president. Or when he said the constitution is a durable document, when Bill asked him if he thinks Trump respects the rule of law. I'd say otherwise he handled himself pretty well, but he did admit to some things about Trump that he probably
wouldn't have otherwise.

Ben was extremely divided on Trump, so he was never backed into a corner about him. Maher needs to give it a rest on Trump. He blathers on and on about him, and it gets really tiresome. Ben Shapiro doesn't abuse supporters, and when he is (for example) on a college campus where he will have supporters, he often times tells them to quiet down and let the person speak. In fact, recently he had a talk with one of the Democratic candidates here:

There is no abuse of a crowd, at all, he doesn't let any audience come on stage. Shapiro, as well as many right-wing debaters, don't follow suit with the precedent set by left-wing debaters, they don't abuse the power of a crowd and they, in fact, tend to shut them up when they're in a serious debate.
That’s why I prefer interviews and discussions like Charlie Rose where there is no audience they stop Bens momentum and add try to add more weight to bill mahers argument when there is none

I can respect Maher for having Shapiro on, most people are afraid of him. A lot of people hate Shapiro simply because he's a conservative, but I haven't found a more fair conservative to date.
That statement is a sad indictment of conservatism as a whole.
A lot hate Shapiro on first sight. I know it is unfair and not true, but his facial expression when he talks and even the tone of his voice and his fast talking style make him look like an asshole. I know he is not, even though I disagree with him on some things.

The literal definition of conservative is "holding traditional attitudes and values and cautions about change or innovation, typically in relation to politics and religion. A conservative is just an individual who is cautious about change. Not somebody who is a trump supporter.
Bill Maher only thinks there are two Political Parties, there are actually 5 different parties. Each and every person in those other parties looks at the policies of Democrats and Republicans and choose which candidate better represents their key issues.
Ben’s a class act. I respect him a lot for being willing to face a hostile audience and keeping it cool.

Bill’s arguments were based on investigations being factual while in reality, no conclusion had been determined. These are the grounds for so many arguments that the Democratic Party lean on. Would love to have Bill and Ben rewatch this interview and then discuss the outcome along with provide insight given the current policy shifts.

By "paying lip service" as you say, what it seems like you're referring to are the disagreements Shapiro has with Trump, but then you suggest that those disagreements are irrelevant if Shapiro agrees with Trump on "100%" of what he does. That would be logically accurate, if that were the case, but I want to be fair to you and assume you mean "most," (like 80, 90, maybe 99%) and not "all." Because even mentioning this lip service is an admission of 1% of Shapiro's dissent. So, I want to give you the benefit of the doubt, and assume you're not really identifying clearly what it is you are complaining about. Otherwise, I would be forced to conclude that you don't allow for anyone to have a nuanced political view, except for yourself. But I also know that isn't a fair assumption for me to make.
The best excuse I can come up with is how I I've used some loose language before, said some things that I wouldn't really stand behind, especially at the expense of being revolting for a joke, whether I think it is funny or not. I appreciate you're overall sentiment, recognizing bias and calling it out, but I don't agree with that level of polarization. Politics aside, we can all vibe with one another under the right circumstances. We don't have to rise to that level of vitriol we see in the media every day. I like Bill Maher, even though his politics and comedy can frustrate me, and I can call him out on a million hypocritical things, and sometimes I do, but at the end of the day I appreciate his enthusiasm, and I don't doubt his sincerity.
You can, of course, have any opinion you wish of Ben Shapiro and other conservatives, including doubting their sincerity. I just hope that isn't the actual case, because we all deserve to be taken seriously in a political discussion (or any intellectual discussion), but that will be harder for you if you are the one deciding what everyone believes. I'm sure you don't treat people in your life that way, so I'm going out of my way to recognize your comment as an oversight on your part, and not a true reflection of your beliefs or your character.
