It's no longer a university of intellectuals, they started promoting affirmative action and diversity, feminism and identity politics... Now its just a bunch of children that see themselves as victims. A decade or so ago, you'd never imagine that in Harvard or oxford, students would be teasing other students in a formal discussion such as this one, saying no when someone asks if the crowd can hear them, and applauding someone for an insult they threw at their opponent. If these are the future leaders of our nation, we're doomed.
Hearing these arguments from Oxford students just reminds me, it doesn't matter how intelligent you are, just how much money your parents have.

Engaging in debate fairly relies more on overall ability to play fair than it relies on intelligence. It’s about refraining from the dirty hits and going for the fair ones, and letting your opponent do the same knowing it might hurt.

Look at the state of the current student bodies and recent (past 10-15 years) alumni as opposed to what it used to be pre 2010 and there’s your answer. Also Oxbridge has been desperately and frantically enrolling ‘diverse’ students for the past decade and a half so much so to the point where being Muslim or black - regardless of your grades and moral values - gets you an instant tick. Oxford alumni here-- this was a bad showing from the Union. The lack of basic respect shown to Ben and the utter hostility of both the Union officers and the crowd makes them look extremely childish. Instead of having the nuanced discussion a topic like this deserves, we got this display of emotional fragility, grandstanding, and failed "gotcha" moments from a few students who clearly think too highly of themselves. What a shame.

It was more than obvious, however, that in this time of "emotional fragility" and myriad deaths in Gaza everyday, that the majority of the community did not want to hear what Ben Shapiro had to say. He's a known propagandist, just from his lack of address of how Israel funded Hamas, and his reliance on sarcasm and patronising behaviour to get him to seem assertive. His methods are obvious. When you know him as the man who wrote both Anti-Arab and Anti-Palestine tweets years back, and the man who stormed out of a BBC interview, not debate, it does not shine the best light on him. In times like this, you will see the worst of people, and you cannot blame them; I have no respect for a liar and a man who argues with young adults for a living. If he had some self-respect, he would allow his own ideas to be challenged by people on a similar level to him in terms of knowledge.
Ben lowered the tone from the get go by saying that one of the students had a "bullshit argument". His way of debating is aggressively arrogant & his constant attempt to intimidate and undermine the opposing argument says a lot about his character. Considering that he has a global platform & behaves in such a despicable way says a lot about "the bullshit" being consumed by those who refuse to educate themselves.
That simpleton, Shapiro, should never have been there. That's the tragedy of Oxford ...the guy is Z list intellectually.

The fact that we are seeing literally one of the strongest academic institutions in the world showcasing students who believe emotion and fact are the same, is one of the most disheartening things I've watched in a long time.

In politics emotions have mattered more than facts forever. In fact they exactly teach that it in university's debate groups how to evoke emotions in listeners to help support your point and all these populist politicians with posh accents begin to pick up their skill of talking bullshit and get away while in universities like Oxford and Cambridge. That's because while on one hand these institutions are indeed putting out scientific work that is genuine on other side of it - these institutions are also play club for rich and clever boys where they are learning to game the system.
