@M. Smith He did. He gave questions challenging Shapiro and his beliefs, that's what journalists are supposed to do. This was a news interview, not a daytime talk show interview. It's not Neil's fault that Shapiro didn't just answer the question, and instead decided to attack the question and the questioner. Really, that shows how Shapiro isn't really all that good at debating too, he can't focus on the topic, and instead seeks to discredit the opponent and invalidate the question rather than address it with real facts or logic.
@M. Smith Otvali, tovarisch - all Andrew did was, y'know, ask it to explain and justify some of the things it has said in the past, and COULD it? Suggesting women should face imprisonment for getting and abortion is at best backwards, at worst stone age mentality. Human rights are not a matter of opinion.
@@ejl1000'Human rights' as of 5 minutes ago. Abortion has been illegal for most of human history across societies. Unfortunately, this even meant punishment for late term miscarriages - though exceedingly rare as they are. Maybe you can find exceptions to this rule, but it's a rule. Only very recently have we had the abortion pill, for example; risky cocktails were the choice before, and were generally illegal before the mid-20th century. It is a disservice to the wisdom of our ancestors to offhandedly disclaim them as ignoring 'human rights.' I would argue abortion is not a human right; and this is not a settled matter. Human rights, as we think of them in the West, come from God. This is from Voltaire, Locke, etc. So to use that argument in a secular way is ironic, to say the least. Medical abortion is a relatively new concept and the discourse on its humanity continues. Frankly, the science is clear: the DNA is unique to the 'fetus', and more and more we have better imaging and proof of life at very early stages of development, where historically we had to rely on when the baby could be felt kicking (known as "quickening.") And you know, many historical state laws used quickening as the benchmark for life, so the ways of some states today to allow elective abortions at any stage of life would be considered barbaric to them.
@@fm1615 Voting rights, segregation laws, a lot of things have not been part of the legal systems of the world for centuries. The concept of human rights was put on paper and oath to be followed by the nations of the world in the last century.
That was not political discourse, that was a slew of leading questions and quotes taken out of context. I have serious doubts about your intellectual capacity if you think Shapiro “lost”
@@jlondono7 I think the thing is that, there is no one lost. The purpose of the interview is just one person asking questions and the other answers, so that people can know more about the topic, which can a person, a book, or an opinion. This is the purpose of the whole thing. There is no back and forth interaction, it's supposed to be only one way. The only thing Ben "lost" to was not the debate, he didn't lose to the debate or argument, cuz there was none. But he lost calm and lost the interview. Tbh, the one being attacked here is not Ben, it was the BBC interviewer the whole time. About questions taken out of context, these are perfect opportunity for interviewees to fill in the context and extend that context to resonate with audience. Elsewhere on the internet, people will literally encounter and read these quotes out of context in everyday life (because they are too lazy to do more research), and Ben would have no chance to explain it. But here Ben was given this very channel to show it. But first he had to take it as a debate, and then had to take it personally. If your opinions can't be confronted by an interview that you lose temper to, idk how i feel about that. Edit adds: In summary, he is not good at this interview thing and he lost calm.

This is one of my favourite US politics-focused interviews in the last 10 years. Andrew Neil completely exposes the growing anger and "coarsening of public discourse" through an interviewee slowly becoming aware of himself and getting unreasonably angry in the process.
stella Andrew Neil has been a hardcore conservative since he was like 5 years old. He was a proponent of every possible war that was ever on the agenda Iraq, Afghanistan etc, called Bush and Blair’s plan masterful, he denies climate change, he’s on the right when it comes to any issue you could possibly think of. I really don’t know what’s to the right of Andrew Neil. That’s what makes this hilarious.
Samuel Díez well, plenty of people have called Shapiro a nazi, so that makes him a so called nazi. Just because the dude doesn’t agree with the far left about socialism, that doesn’t make him conservative. Do you consider either of the Bush presidents to be conservative? Because they were most definitely not. How about Nixon? Their labels don’t line up with the ideology of conservatism. Conservative doesn’t get to change from person to person; it’s about individual rights, so it doesn’t matter what label someone uses when their ideology doesn’t fit the definition

He was provided a hypothetical and had a complete meltdown, then got mad because he wasn't allowed to monologue off his pre written talking points. The fact that he folded like a house of cards to a hypothetical is pretty indicative of his entire style of derailing any sort of reasonable discourse in a discussion. It was legitimate to look at his former positions. Unlike U.S. media you do not get a book promotion and free airtime (does he know what ads would cost at that spot ? With the BBC and one of their high profile interviewers). He will have to endure that it goes beyond polite questions about his book and the very recent past. To all of the Shapiro fans complaining that Neil is "digging up" all these old quotes to make Shapiro look bad: Shapiro was on the BBC to promote a book where he argues that one of the reason America is on the decline is that political discourse has gotten too toxic and laments the fact that the Left and Right cannot have a civil conversation anymore. A casual Google search will show that Shapiro has also spent his entire career belittling the Left as being overly sensitive little snowflakes who hate facts and argue with emotion. Neil was giving Shapiro the chance to explain the discrepancy between his previous inflammatory statements and the book he is currently selling. Instead of doing that Shapiro doubled down on his combative nature, ironically doing everything he is constantly accusing the Left of. Shapiro could have avoided all of this by just being more honest about the fact that he's a controversial, intentionally divisive conservative firebrand and wrote a book about that instead of trying to pretend that he's this unbiased purveyor of facts and logic who treats both sides equally.

You've seen too many chat shows masquerading as interviews. There's a real difference.
I think this shows the difference between US and UK interview bias. When Neil challenges him, Shapiro assumes he's from the left. In the UK Neil is considered to be right of centre. No interviewer worth his or her name should 'go soft' on anyone, even if they hold the same opinion.
To be honest, I've never seen Andrew Neil fail an interview Left or Right. Ben Shapiro spat the dummy. I agree with him on very little (especially free speech) but Neil caught him imo.
Neil is right of center in the UK, because the UK is much more left politically than the US. Which, follow me now, would make him left of center in the US. As seen by his blatant politically leanings (to the left) in his questions.

When this notoriously right wing conservative reporter is inquiring an OPPOSING VIEW to Ben’s narrative, he allows Ben to showcase his beliefs as juxtaposed against contradiction, which is excellent journalism.

Shapiro in a nutshell...
To all of the Shapiro fans complaining that Neil is "digging up" all these old quotes to make Shapiro look bad:
Shapiro was on the BBC to promote a book where he argues that one of the reason America is on the decline is that political discourse has gotten too toxic and laments the fact that the Left and Right cannot have a civil conversation anymore.
I've seen Andrew Neil debate with leftists, and he does indeed do the same thing with them. He puts difficult questions to them. To me this just demonstrates the polarity of US journalism; you're either a leftwing or rightwing journalist. No room for the middle.

Liberal, no wonder you side with Ben in this video. I happen to agree with Ben’s perspective in many issues including His Pro Life stance but EVEN BEN HIMSELF ADMITTED that he did not conduct his due diligence in this matter. Unfortunately, a highly polarising approach in journalism has become a hallmark of US reporting and that is simply untrue in many other news outlets across the globe. When this notoriously right wing conservative reporter is inquiring an OPPOSING VIEW to Ben’s narrative, he allows Ben to showcase his beliefs as juxtaposed against contradiction, which is excellent journalism. Instead of calmly explaining his views and addressing reasonable opposition he chose to be emotional and take the questions as a personal attack. Isn’t Ben the one who said that “facts don’t care about your feelings” and yet he treated an interview as a debate.
Hamsterking101 Also, it speaks to Andrew Neil’s maturity and professionalism that he is able to remove his own beliefs in the equation and instead ask questions that challenge the guest’s beliefs regardless of what those are. Honestly, your Fox News, MSNBC, CNN etc. Should take notes!

“I’m the interviewer, you’re the guest” is fine when it’s a straightforward interview, not when it’s one that includes politically biased questions, such as “the dark ages of the republican platform” or the “popularity of a $15/hr minimum wage” or “the left are the only ones with new ideas” or plenty of other biased, false premises. Then it becomes a political debate. But the interviewer wanted to present these biases AND have Shapiro follow the protocols of a straightforward interview. So, he's the disease AND the cure, now? He wrote a book whining about the political divide he helped exacerbate. What he doesn't do is introspection to include the fact that HE has helped to promote this divide, and not only his loudness, or his zealotry, but his ignorance. He's a dishonest person.

And Andrew roasted him back in the same manner😂
This is what happens when trying to interview someone from the same side of the political spectrum but using the opposite point of view so the person being interviewed can justify their beliefs. It’s a serious problem in the US by both the left and right unlike the UK where we are generally prepared for those sorta interviews
To the United Kingdom's most right-wing journalist, on the WORLD'S BIGGEST NEWS CHANNEL - brilliant, wasn't it?
When Americans think they know it all but are ignorant of the rest of the world's views. So self- righteous about their own bias and incapable of rational debate. Talking fast and over others means you are not listening and are avoiding supporting your point of view against questions or criticism. Andrew Neil asks the questions on his programme. (He is well versed and very adept at his job - I say that not being his greatest fan).If you have not got sound means of proving your point, don't meet with him. If you do not know who you are up against, be wise and do your homework first! I don't care if you've written a book, Mr Sadler; viewing you here you are just so much rattle and noise with poorly argued substance.
Ben is right to say that, he is way bigger and more popular than this loser of a reporter.
... not ALL Americans think like Shapiro...I guess the people with more sense stay clear of opinionated nonsense. The wonderful interviewer was giving Shapiro an opportunity to defend his position. Instead he attacked the interviewer like an angry school child.... and spoiled and entitled to boot!!

The one thing that this guy said that held anyone meaning. Ben this entire time was staying crap like that. He had that line ready bc bbc knew that questions bringing up someone’s dumb past and questions that don’t provoke any thoughts at all would make Ben mad since it was a waste of time. I feel like anyone would be mad if they cleaned up and did everything to go on the news just for it to be a waste of time.
