I'll take your word for it 🙂👍
Question. How long does this take you?
Can we just appreciate how Jake made Monster Medusa forward facing and Pretty Medusa glancing to the side just like he mentioned in the video.
Just noticed that
I didn't even notice.
The small details that make things the best or the worst :)
I didnt even notice that, thanks for mentioning that
@@WorldWeaver yes
I like that you took the time to give the Roman gods unique designs instead of using the usual ones. They were originally different gods than the Greek pantheon.
Certified Percy Jackson fan.
@@QuartzIsAnOxide but in percy jackson they are the same with diferent personalites, that is not accurate to how the mythology worked in real life
@@sonofcronos7831 They're also described as wearing different clothes from what I remember. At one point Percy even points out that Bacchus looks skinnier than his Greek counterpart.
@@QuartzIsAnOxide i actually do not like the portrays of gods in percy jackson when refering to the roman part. Like, Helios being forgetten was not true, and not all the roman counterpart were more "disciplined" (the fandom puts in this way), especially Neptune and Volcanos. Also, i trought Dionisius portrayl in the first books was already influenced by Bacchus? In archaic and classical Greece Dionisius he even had a beard and he was skinny (while in lighting thief is the totally opposite), while later he was portrayed as more jovial, beardless and not that skinny during the roman period and in rennascence (and this period was influenced by roman mythology, not greek).
It would be interesting to see Jake make a mythconception video on this
It's also important to note that Ovid was anti-authority so always painted the gods as tyrannical jerks. Hence him writing Medusa as a victim of two god-based atrocities
Yep Poseidon should get saul to sue for damage to his image
Yeah exactly, Ovid's anti-authoritorian themes were very prominent in his book Metamorphoses (lit. 'Transformations'), which was meant to give subtle political commentary.
Yes, that's also visible in many if his writings, like his version of the tale of Arachne
Ovid is pious to the gods in his other works. Metamorphoses covers love stories (with exception of a few ones). Love between equals will always lead to a good result, love between a superior and a inferior will lead to disasters. This is why love between gods and humans leads to tragedies, where the human or nymph by the end is desuhamize literaly, to become a plant or animal or monster. But there is also stories between humans who also leads to tragedies like Narcissus or Tereus. So saying that the book is anti autoritharian is a very simple review of a book about love tales.
@@msicvbes4977 the book is not about politics, is about love. Love between equals=good, love between a superior (someone that tries to control or possess his partner) and a "inferior" (the one possessed by his partner)=a inhuman metamorphosis. This is why he uses gods more often since is clear that gods are intented to be this superior force that controls you. But he also uses human people as well like Narcissus and Tereus to show that humans also leads to inhuman metamorphosis.
I once had an idea of a movie that starts with Perseus slaying Medusa and putting her head in a bag, and the first words spoken are Medusa saying, “Fine, you win, can you let me out now?” And it becomes a weird road trip buddy comedy. 😆
You just described the game Lollipop Chainsaw.
Zombie outbreak happens, main character’s boyfriend gets bitten, so she cuts off his head to save him from turning and carries it around on her belt.
@@isaacevilman7586 You have a point! Though Perseus would probably not have a chainsaw. Also, there's a talking head in God of War, and a few talking skulls in other games!
I like that idea. And do baby versions of Pegasus and Chrysaor tag along, calling Perseus 'Dad' all the while?
Can I be honest? I like the idea. I would defenetly read it, or watch it. Sounds fun, especially if both Perseus, and Medusa sometimes naret it, which sometimes over lap, and they eather agree on something, or arguu about it, or something similar.
instead of Medusa, maybe incorporate her 2 immortal sisters and have Perseus decapitate her instead
Dang! You beat me to it. I've been doing research for this exact kind of video for a few weeks now. Nice job though. This argument pops up a lot in my comments too so it's good to get the full info out there.
You made me love mythology
It’s the mythology guy😮
As a fan of mythology itself, it is refreshing to see someone manage to cover every single aspect of tales, not just from one source. And it really shows how people will evolve certain stories to try and fit it into a narrative to be more accecptable to the times, rather than keep it to what the orginal lessons were attempting to teach. Whether Medusa was orginally a monster from birth or turned into one, I think it's fasinating that her symbol managed to come full circle as a face that represents protection and wards off evil. Alibiet for different reasons for a certain group, but it's one of the few stories from mythology that managed to keep it's orgins in some way.
Out of curoisity, I know you did some videos about Persephone and Hades and the story about them, but would it be possible if you could cover the REAL story of Hades and Persehone and explain why many people might interput what was once considered an empowering yet tragic tale of a mother and daughters lost rapture, to that of a forbidden romance of the god of the underworld with innocent flower girl? I would love to see your take on that topic!
I'm definitely gonna make a Hades and Persephone deep dive. When I have the energy...
@Ian McNicol I'm a Classics student, and one of my teachers (literally the world's leading expert on Underworldly gods in ancient Greece, Dr. Ellie Mackin Roberts) said that OSP's video is probably the most discouraging video she's seen on Hades and Persephone by virtue of: "not one thing about it being correct" 💀
@Ian McNicol From what Dr. Roberts said the "Bronze Age/ Mycenaean Persephone" discussed in their video doesn't exist and was likely Perses-later the father of Hekate. Early scholars first made the connection between Persephone and the Mycenaean record based on loose etymological similarities, such as the words seemingly looking alike when transliterated. I'm not sure about the details, as the Bronze Age isn't my area of expertise, but Dr. Roberts emphasized that the methodology used to make the connection was flawed and long outmoded. That's another thing, too: we know more about Despoina than they let on, and many of the connections they made weren't right. Despoina was an Arkadian goddess who was worshipped alongside Kore-Persephone, making them separate goddesses.
@Ian McNicol My biggest issue with them as a Classics student is that they don't reference their sources. I know for a fact that they use Wikipedia (which isn't nearly enough when you're making historical videos), and it doesn't take very long to put some links in a description, but they don't do that. This creator's video is fantastic, but I also wish he would put together a "works cited" in the description lol
Like the essay!
I'll wait 10+ hours in the name of Jake Doubleyoo, it's so worth it.
We shall do it together, comrade.

The roman characters having a diferent design is so dope!!!! I wish we could see them all!
I kinda prefer the version of Medusa where she was always a gorgon because then the whole shabang where she and Poseidon went at it in Athena's temple would make more sense if Athena would be more pissed that a monster defiled her temple like that.
Same. Especially since scholars are theorizing that Medusa was originally a goddess worshiped in the area that part of the story until people started worshipping Athena, so it can also have a revenge angle.
Wait, if the latest version is Athena granting Medusa the ability to turn men into stone to protect her, how do they reconcile that Athena is one of the gods who helped Perseus in his quest to slay the gorgon?
They don’t care about that tiny detail lol.
In a video about the birth of Pegasus, there was an argument about Medusa's curse and whether it was a punishment or a gift, during the argument, someone asked the same question as yours, and the commenter (who the argument started in their replies) said that Zeus forced Athena to help Perseus
@@Tutyluly yep, sounds like Zeus
@@Tutyluly Would that be the first time Zeus forced his favorite daughter to do anything?
Blame Ovid for starting the garbage in the first place.
The fact that you came up with new designs for The roman versions of the gods is amazing, the effort you put In your videos is very admirable
fr,Neptune looks more intimidating than Poseidon’s art (no offense to Poseidon)
HADES depiction with Dusa is easily my favorite take on the character, turning everyone's most hated Castlevania foe the flying Medusa heads and turning her into a shy but hard working loveable gal that I totally own a plush of because shes awesome XD
The fact that floating head Medusa actually seems to have a mythological source just makes her better
@@sylvanas9329 im curious if the folks at Konami back in the day knew that about Medusa's origin or if the whole floating head thing was just a really lucky coincidence, with them being japanese in the pre "look up whatever you want on the internet" era, I'm not sure how likely it is but its still neat
I know Ovid probably had it rough, but I just think it's kinda pathetic that he reinvented Medusa's backstory just to make Athena/Minerva look bad out of spite. It wouldn't be so bad if it hadn't become so "influential".
Actually he says that she was transformed "to remember the crime". Is just like Zeus creating constelations for some evil folk like Orion, to preserve the memory of the crime. It is odd for us today, but in anciet times, people liked to use constelations or statues (like the gorgonion statues) to remember people that the world could be a awful place and that we need to ward of evil. Also, Ovid himself was very pious towards the gods in his other works, is more in metamorphoses were he invents the awful versions, but because he was "anti-autoritarian" is very unlikely, altrough it still could be.
@@sonofcronos7831 Did he write those other works BEFORE he was exiled or after?
@@videogollumer Ovid metamorphoses was written before his exile, while Fasti he never finished because he died in exile. But in fasti and other works he do not bash the gods. Metamorphoses is a book of poetry, it portrays love between human characters in a good way, ending with a happy ending, or ending with a tragedy, normally by external things to the couple. But it potrays love by gods as terrible, r4pe or just awful in general. He even finished his work saying that not even Jupiter could destroy it (and he was right).
So he see myths just as a way to tell stories, he clearly did not believe in them, but he believed in the gods, at least he had nothing against them. He invented the stories and tries to portray the gods as horrible as he can in order to elevate human love, not out of spite against autoritarianism. A guy that really liked to bash gods was the writer Lucian, not Ovid.
Personally, my favorite version of Medusa is from the Fate series. It manages to blend the older interpretations with the newer ones very well. While the most famous version of Fate's Medusa is a beautiful woman, there is also her future self, the Gorgon who looks more monstrous. In her series debut, she is a protector of a young girl who helped carry out her wish, but that didn't mean she was passive considering she fought for her and, in some timelines, even dies for her . The sequel to that original series also gave her more backstory showing that she started a beautiful woman that turned monstrous to protect her sisters, only to devour them. Her death at Perseus' hand is seen as both an epic battle and a mercy kil considering she was nothing more than a writhing mass of snakes when Perseus got to her. In the series where her future self debuted, she was mistaken for the mesopotamian earth goddess Tiamat, showing that they didn't forget her origins as a goddess.
To recap the blending of old and new interpretaions, we have:
-Protector
-Protector of women
-Willing to use violence
-Beautiful woman
-Terrifying monster
-A mere human
-Seen as a goddess
When seeing all that, it makes sense why she is my favorite interpretation since she isn’t shown as merely a tragic figure, or a terrifying monster, and is instead blended beautifully into a new character who takes everything into account from being a protector of women seen in the modern day and being seen as a monstrous goddess all the way back from her earliest iterations
Let's also remember the use of her.. being like, an adult? Compared to her sister's looking youthful because, it's better immortality to stay young than age because if you age while immortal it ends up being a curse
So basically they used the kitchen sink approach and it actually worked. Great job Type Moon!
@@nkyfong Honestly, the "kitchen sink" approach has been their M.O. from the very beginning, and I LOVE them for that. TM/the Nasuverse is the main inspiration I draw from for my own books.
Jake, 10/10 on the new character design man, well done
Agreed but I will miss the soulless of the old design
I honestly prefer the old design, i feel like the new design breaks the inmersion that the one drawn as another character had
i mean you can just imagine his character having no white in his eyes and you now have classic jake
His new design scared me for a bit ngl, he starts off with the pupils and no whites and then BAM, now you have less-soulless eyes.
I liked the old character with its simplicity and those eyes with no pupils
You should make a video explaining the Roman forms of the gods
I agree
That's good
They were different gods before being merged with greek ones in the IV century B.C, but even after the merger they were still diferent (Jupiter for example was more democratic than Zeus, ruling together with Juno and Minerva instead of alone like Zeus, actually you can see Jupiter as a wiser Zeus after thousands of years, changing his way after thousands of years, this also applies to others). So yeah it would be interisting to see a video.
The idea of ‘Roman Forms’ of gods came from Percy Jackson. They were different gods in Rome before greek god incorporation. Even after Greek god incorporation, the ceremonies were different even if they shared stories
Make a video about how the Medusa myth has been confirmed by modern quantum physics. Its called the Quantum Zeno Effect.
5:00
Am I missing something, or did Homer just pause mid-writing to say Danae had marvellous ankles 😭
It's just how Greek writers would describe women as beautiful.
It probably has something to do with the rythm, a lot of characters have these kinds description
I saw an online photo of a contemporary sculpture of Medusa holding Perseus's severed head. That artpiece was obviously of the 'medusa = righteous feminist rage" mindset, but it really didn't sit well with me how Perseus was being demonized in this line of thought, Perseus who is the one Greek hero I know of who had the least hubristic tendencies. It was all a very much 'trying to empower one group at the expense of another' kind of approach to a very ancient story from ancient times
I think I know that statue and I had the same dislike, though not for the same reason. I dislike it because I've always heard the "Medusa was always a monster with 3 sisters" and that kind of interpretation is just weird for me. As I learned more of her, it just didn't work in my eyes. Like, what about her sisters like Stheno or how she turns everyone to stone regardless of who they are, or that she kills people a lot by doing that?
Same. I don’t mind the statue but I’m of the belief that we need a new retailing of the Medusa story where people don’t demonize Persuse. Because man was a kid trying to save his mom from a creep, he’s not the villain if anything he’s a victim who was sent on a suicide mission. So what I’m saying is I think people severely miss the point when they demonize him to and not the actual creep in this story.
Plus all Perseus wanted was to stop a nefarious king from forcibly marrying his mom. He likely didn’t even know anything about Medusa other than why she was dangerous.
I remember hearing the story of how Medusa was turned into a snake haired monster & also that she had sisters that were also gorgons but never heard anything for how they became such, this clears up so much.
Thank You Jake.
I guess the Athena turning Medusa into a gorgon as a gift doesn’t make sense as if I’m remember correctly, all the versions of the perseus myth I’ve heard or read have Athena helping Perseus
I like how Jake is literally baking ice
He's melting/stiring it in a frying pan.
I'm pretty sure the more modern version of Medusa, with her being turned to protect her, is from Tumblr.
Stories like medusa are so cool to me because over time they change and sprout so many branches of lesson and symbolism to them as tales. it's why the minotaur is my favourite story because with all the tellings ive read and collected over the years it could be a story about violence, guilt, fear of something outside the norm, gender expression, prisoners of war, child abuse, hell in some tellings the minotaur is a woman in love with theseus. It's honestly so awesome to me how ancient fables like these change and grow so many legs that they're practically the millipedes of classical mythology. ^_^
i can see into the future this is gonna be good
Thanks for telling us
You don’t need to see into the future to be able to tell that
The new animation style is so cool!
the eyes horrify me
I love the new jake character. I love it when I can watch a creator change and evolve overtime. Keep up the great work Jake, and just know we love your content.
Thank you so much for doing a deep dive on Medusa, she's my favourite mythological character ever and there's just so much misinformation about her and people claiming the version of the story they are familiar with is the original or the right version.
There's like 9 people waiting
ARE YOU GUYS GONNA WAIT UNTIL THIS GOES LIVE???
Yes
The old Jake design was already nice, but I'm really loving the new one even more
I love the old fashion mischief making look of Medusa. It just looks like some lil gremlin that would just jump around monsters biting at them and just being like a rubberhose cartoon menace until the monsters of the world were scared off.
The first time I ever heard that version of Medusa you were referring to, where her power was a gift from Athena rather than a punishment, was in the remake of Clash of the Titans. Io was talking to Perseus and the soldiers from Argos as they were taking the boat to the underworld. I had heard of several people suggesting she was a tragic victim, but that movie was the first time I'd seen anyone put that spin on the story.
I definitely remember hearing it the more modern version from Tumblr, I think they also made up a fake deity too
How dare you blaspheme against Mesperyian
Love the new avatar and emphasis on evolving and changing mythos!
Fascinating history, thanks for bringing it to us!
Well researched and fun as always, Jake. Thank you!
I wonder if using a gorgon’s face to ward off evil is similar to how modern Greeks use the evil eye to ward off bad vibes. It’s less “this thing will protect me from evil” and more “I keep the symbol of something evil/malintentioned close to me to discourage any other evil/malintentioned energy or event from harming me”.
Couple of modern language quirks - ‘gorgon’ in modern Greek is also used to mean mermaid, and one of the words for jellyfish is ‘medusa’.
4:38 the text makes me imagine that chrysaor and pegasus weren’t born from her neck but instead they just showed up and said “hey”
As a Classics undergrad, I usually can't stomach videos on ancient Greek mythology (the misinformation ruins the experience for me) 😭 but this video was fantastic! The animations are also super charming
8:35
I believe it may have originated as a creative writing Tumblr Post.
It fits our writing style and broadly how many of us enjoy a twist on ancient stories.
Plus, I've heard something similar said on Tumblr several times, so it's likely from us.
Seconded, the first place I saw the interpretation was tumblr.
I may have seen a different tumblr post but I seem to remember it claiming that this was the original version of the story which would imply they heard it somewhere else unless they were purposely trying to change the myth.
Im glad you added the note about how gargoyle an gorgon don’t come from the same rt cuz i thought they did learn something every day
Your animations have improved greatly!
( Also the fact you used new designs for the Roman Versions shows your dedication!)
ima be honest
while you should keep the smaller more chibi-like characters for the stories themselves
your appearance in this specific video is too adorable not to make your default
I always thought that Chrysaor's nature is something of a lost facet of the mythology and that all we really know is that his name means "He has a golden sword". I think I've seen the boar depictions but I'm curious as to whether you suppose there might have been another version of him where he had hands and wielded a sword.
This is one of my favorite channels and I had so much fun watching this
I get so happy and excited when Jake posts😭💗💗
I like this new way he’s animating, his videos 10/10
So as a sex worker (Dominatrix, Onlyfans, etc) this was really, REALLY interesting because Medusa has gone on to become both a feminist icon, but an icon for sex workers who’ve been assaulted, but can’t or are too afraid to report their attacker because the form of sex work they may have been engaging in to survive may not have been legal (ex. Onlyfans, P0rn & Stripping being legal compared to FSS which is illegal), so there’s always the very real risk of the assaulted sex worker going to jail instead of their attacker, hence the reference to modern day Medusa being assaulted and her attacker not seeing justice.
So hearing the differences in the original story is amazing and this video was so needed.
The attitudes surrounding sex work is absolutely vile
SWERF needs to take as much vitriol as the term TERF already implies
@@jmurray1110 Agreed❤
I don’t say much but dang it Shirou Emiya.
@@jmurray1110 The unevolved dregs of the Second Wave have MUCH to answer for.
While I agree that sex workers deserve to be able to do their jobs safely, this interpretation really rubs me the wrong way. It paints Thesus as a monster for killing her and I really don’t think that’s a fair interpretation. With the exception of making Thesus look like the bad guy,I think it’s a good interpretation although it does ignore the fact Medusa turns anyone she looks at into stone (from what I’ve heard, her sheer ugliness turns you to stone,it’s not like a magical gaze) so it’s a bit more than a defence mechanism
Thanks! Your videos are really fun to watch and well-researched! :)
It's funny how medusa went from a race of monsters to a unique creature back to a race of monsters
As a greek I'm very conflicted on the subject. On one hand, the fact that the myths of my ancestors are not only still remember but inspire people across the world brings a lot of joy. On the other hand, the fact that the most prominent version of the myth (Medusa's myth) now a days is the one who was created by an Italian as a way to throw shit to his former boss and has not only portrait our old gods as jerks but it has starting to give rise to a villfication of one of our most prominent folklore heroes is somewhat disheartening

In Sardinia there are different legends about Medusa and in those cases she is just a beautiful queen who protects her relam after her father (Phorcus) death against Atlante, and then she was killed in a battle.
Medusa (or better Mèdousa) means protector in Greek
I like the addition of your avatar in the video! Maybe your should include him more often

its probably already been said but i think the original interpretation of medusas transformation being meant as a way to protect herself is I THINK from tumblr
I took an art history class and we learned a bit about why Medusa was put on shields
I can't remember it much, so I'm glqd this video covered it!
I like how Ray Harryhausen brings back the monstrous Medusa somewhat with the body-covering scales and the serpentine lower body in Clash Of The Titans (1981). In that movie, Perseus rides Pegasus _before_ killing Medusa, which is interesting to contrast with the mythic origin of that winged horse.
Another small corner of popular culture - Dungeons & Dragons - has also complicated matters by using the name 'gorgon' for a metallic bull-like monster that medieval bestiaries called the Libyan Bull. Having done that, they then called an entire race of snake-braided women 'Medusae'. So confusing.
I can wait.
Im not sure if Im terrified or amazed by your new design

The strange thing is that D&D calls the snake-haired monsters in the game "Medusae" while they use "Gorgons" refer to predatory stone bulls who petrify creatures with their breath, smash them, then eat them.
I think D&D did this because Gorgons in classic greek mythology are considert two different typ of monster. The Three gorgon-sisters and then an gorgon-monster that exist with no relationship to them.
@@doncalicula7938 I looked it up, D&D seems to have based it on a variant of the Catoblepas that has petrification breath, which has been referred to as an "African Gorgan", while the monster D&D calls "Catoblepas" is based on the variant that has a death stare.
@@videogollumer Ah, I forgot about the Catoblepas. But this makes sence.

Despite Medusa's origins may or may not be, I do love that she's now seen as a symbol for survivors of SA. It's super important that victims of crimes like that have something positive to unite them and give them strength.
