I wish I had a guide like this when I started playing last year. I'm fairly new to this game and in no way am I an expert. However, I know enough to teach new players the basics and I hope this guide helps you get started. PoE is a 100% free-to-play ARPG and is in no-way P2W. The only microtransactions are for stash tabs and cosmetic items.
ONE THING I FORGOT TO MENTION. The chance of you finding Chaos Orbs early on is very slim. Try to get a character to the end of merciless difficulty where you can really start farming orbs and buying gear to build new characters. Do not get discouraged!

Hi, i started playing this game and i get lot's of objects and i have no idea if anything of this is useful. Well i guess you can always exchange for scrolls etc at the sellers but what am i suppose to be keeping?
So many different weapons and armour with different slot combinations. Not only that they also have variety based on being magical or rare and even Quality.
I am so confused. And sometimes i feel sad throwing away something with high quality etc even if it is a low stat.
What is your advice?
95% of the loot you find is vendor trash unless it's got 4-6 linked sockets or has a unique tier counterpart that is worth value (such as Gold Rings or Sorcerer's Boots). Rare (golden items) are the ones to look out for. Identify them ALL (unless going for Chaos Orb recipe) and see which ones are viable to your build (or a build you may want to run in the future).
If it is armor and doesn't have any +Max Life or + to Elemental Resistance, it is garbage. If it has low +Max Life or single/low +to Elemental Resistance, it's still garbage. This is what you look for in items (Max Life > Elemental Resistances > Linked Sockets > Everything else). You want HIGH numbers rolled on them (30+), or else it's garbage.
If it is a weapon, it really depends on the build you are using. For example, if I'm running a Summon Raging Spirits build, I want a wand with + Cast Speed and + Minion Damage. If I'm running a Reave build based on high critical damage, you'll obviously want + to Global Critical Strike and + to Critical Damage (and maybe some elemental damage to increase your DPS). Use your best judgement with weapons. It's most likely garbage unless it has mods that pertain to a specific build.

As a tip to other newbs since many seem to be confused: don't sell or use up anything before hovering over it and reading the description or heading over to a vendor and seeing if it can be used as currency (for orbs and such)
Also! Once you start playing it's really not that complicated, but if ever in doubt: Google it or ask around in world chat (the players are pretty nice about it...most of the time :p)

if you enjoyed diablo 1&2 and youve played with the complex skill map in FFX then youll learn fast on this game, prefix and suffix and item hunting is an old diablo 1 thing, im loving the currency system though, it's definitely unique

This video was very helpful this is my first RPG game and I love it but had so many questions haha this cleared a lot of the confusion. I'm currently building a lightning focused witch and am pretty close to ascendancy, going to do the elementalist
Elementalist is a strong choice, probably the best for elemental spells (self-casting). You should use Arc, it's extremely powerful and if you build your character well enough it can conquer everything in the game. I'm sure there are plenty of guides for Arc Elementalist.
@@UglyStru I actually am using arc! I'm not following any build, kind of doing my own thing. I'm putting a lot of focus on my energy shields with my gear. For AoE I'm using ice nova, can you recommend something that might work better?

Nice video bro! My friend has been playing this a while and I just started yesterday on Xbox. Tried having my buddy explain the basics of the game and he just ended up confusing me. I was asking him if damage if based of your attributes at all, if I should specialize in strength or intelligence or be a hybrid. He tried telling me attribute points dont matter, I'm thinking how do they not. This helped clear things up for me, appreciate it
Attributes are VERY important. There are attribute requirements on almost every piece of gear and skill/support gems. They don't really help with scaling damage (unless you're using a unique that gives you some buff based on x amount of attribute, such as Hand of Wisdom and Action claw or Shaper's Touch gloves).

Since I didn't really understand half the things you said, I think I'm just gonna jump in and play. I will make mistakes, and learn from those mistakes to get a better understanding of how certain things work in Path of Exile.
Play for a few hours and then come back and you'll understand most of it.

This will not be as helpful for Xbone version. They are remaking the game entirely and its gonna play completely different. Less mobs, four flasks, some abilities like blink arrow and flameblast probably won't work, etc.

At the very end of the video, you use a Scroll of Wisdom on a Unidentified Chest. I had no idea that's how that worked!
Oh yes! I like to do that on Strongboxes and such that may freeze me or explode. It's nice to know ahead of time so I don't get decimated..

I started with a Witch and going the summoning route, its working out so far pretty well...but how is it towards end game? Trying to relive my days as a Necro on D2 lol
Holy shit GLHF. Summoner isn't a cheap class, I wouldn't recommend it as a starter as you will be having trouble unless you farm currency late-game :p

I chose a Cyclone Marauder but if you don't want to go melee, I'd recommend a caster class (Witch, Scion) like Spark/Orb of Storms with high Life/EnergyShield

I really need to get back into this game. I feel like I am far behind at this point. Also, I like how a lot of the unique items have a downside to using them, making them not too op, unless that has changed in recent times.
All of the uniques are pretty balanced. Some feel almost required on certain builds though (like the Belly of the Beast chest). The most OP ones cost a ridiculous amount like 100ex for a belt. Not worth it lol but a new league starts this weekend :D

Whooooa--Slow down! How did you get that map up? Where did you get the healing potions? How do you use attacks? Where am I supposed to go and how do i get there??
1) Tab key for transparent map. U for full Act map
2) You find them as loot or can buy them from vendors.
3) I explained this. You put the gem in the socket and bind it to a key in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
4) Read the lore, read the map.
Really nice video,helped me get back into the game. Quick question tho,what class do you recommend for begginers? Something not really that hard to play and that can solo.
Hmm, I'd avoid melee builds and full Energy Shield/Chaos Innoculation (It's a passive skill that reserves all but 1 HP but makes you immune to chaos damage). Those are very expensive and require good gear to solo. I'd recommend a Spark build with high life and armor (probably Templar). Flame Totem build is good too but is very boring to level.
Noob here, why avoid melee builds? I just started playing as a marauder and the whirlwind build looks fun, is it expensive or difficult? I'm only level 3 or 4, might actually try Templar instead.
Melee builds get very difficult in later parts of the game where it's very easy to get one-hit killed or take a LOT of damage very easily. It's best to find a build where you can keep your distance from bosses. For example, Izaro and his pet.

It's not for everyone. Don't force yourself to play it if you don't like ARPGs and spending a ridiculous of time calculating math, planning a build, or dying at Level 95 in Hardcore mode while Global Chat just screams "RIPPPPPPPPPP"

Magic items can have only 2 attributes? But i found a few magic items with three attributes?
Has this changed with 2.4?
Some of them have implicit modifiers (exclusive to that item) and can roll an additional two if it's a magic item (so a total of three). Also, some mods get added together as one big mod (like staunching flask mods will have Immunity to Bleeding AND Removes Bleeding on Use but that only counts as one mod).

Yeah, I understand and kind of expected that for a lot of people. Take it slow, one thing at a time. Pretty much, hoard all currency, look for high life and elemental resistances on gear, and stick to 1-2 main skills on your character. Don't look at the skill tree and you'll be fine =)

Why do you dislike this game?
Its not really if you ever played an ARPG before. If you just play through acts 1-4 normally and then come back to this you should have a good grasp of all he said by then if you are a complete newbie. Don't forget this game is designed to be played for hundreds and hundreds of hours, of course there will be a lot if you take that all in at once. Just play the game dude, get a sense of it and its systems, and it will make more sense. Game is awesome and worth a buy.

I don't know what you are saying. Press "P" on your keyboard to enter the skill tree. Each time you level up, you are given a passive skill point, and you also get them as quest rewards for some quests.
Help me out please! :( apparently I made a really bad character (all the way up to lvl 70 no less) what should my skill tree look like if I want an evasion based shadow that specializes in daggers?
It depends on what kind of daggers and attack skills you're running. For example, if you're running Blade Flurry, you'll probably want to use 2 Widowmakers and spec your skill tree with phys/chaos damage with daggers and crit.
I always played arpgs solo or at max duo with a friend and intend on doing so in poe as well. Will i ever be able to get a good char and clear endgame content without trading or partying up for some farming? It sounds like this game is pretty much impossible to master wihout trading.
SSF mode, lad! Solo-self found. There's a lot of support for it and the devs make it very much possible to beat end-game content in SSF. You might just be limited on the builds you can use if they require specific uniques you can't farm.

I was awful at the game back then too. Look at me not using Heralds, or GMP, or Quicksilver Flasks, or literally doing anything to get more DPS and clear speed... Why does this video have views...
Nice information for beginners. However, Regal Orb information is "entirely" wrong. They don't upgrade a blue item to yellow item with up to six mods. Regal Orb sure upgrades a blue item to a a rare (yellow) item, but it ONLY ADDS ONE mod while doing so... 15:46. I hope not many people have been disappointed.
serious noob question, but I started playing yesterday, and I can't figure out how to sell items without having to drag and drop them individually into the vendor window, i tried left click, right click, etc but no luck. please help XD

So, if we need to focus on life and life reg, the best character to start, is a strenght character?
Kinda sorta. Strength characters are usually melee builds so it's a lot of close combat that can get you killed easily, but it's much easier to find good gear for a strength/melee build than anything else. I started with a Cyclone Marauder and it taught me a lot about the game so it might be something to look into. It was a very tanky build and I rarely had to worry about survivability. I did a bad job at allocating points towards DPS though so I struggled at killing things.
Any build you start with should be okay as long as you put enough passives into strength and life. For example: I had a ranger which is usually fully Dexterity-based, but I made sure my gear had added strength and life and made sure to go for all of the strength/life nodes in her skill tree.
tl;dr Strength is usually for melee but is necessary on almost all builds, melee or not.

I just started playing this a couple of days ago. The elaborate and extremely flexible skill and passive system is what finally convinced me to give the game a shot. Come to find out, you're more or less pigeonholed into considering non-HP passives as nothing more than novelty on your path to more HP.

Not necessarily. If you're running an ES build, there isn't much you need to pickup in the skill tree in regards to ES. Most of that comes from your gear. You obtain over 120 skill points, and assigning them all into DPS nodes would just be unbalanced. GGG does that so players learn to balance DPS and survivability.
EDIT: Sorry, just putting it out there that I'm not looking to nitpick / rant against you or anything, just speaking from what I've seen, which naturally is uninformed from actual experience with how end game functions.
From the language used in this video, as well as a number of other resources I've poked around at regarding the game, the goal is explicitly aiming for the big HP / survival passives, while only grabbing offensive stuff along the way as is convenient. Seems to suggest a far greater focus on defense, rather than offense, which doesn't happen to scratch my personal itch for elaborate damage builds.
Absolutely I can understand enemy damage being at a point to strongly encourage the progression of one's defenses, though on the outside looking in, the focus seems way more heavily skewed to defense, is what I'm saying.
What makes the game so good IS scaling offense though. Having amazing DPS while being able to maintain survivability makes it so complex and intricate. It's a brain teaser. I actually spend 95% of my time playing planning a skill tree, socket links, which unique item I plan on making my build around, rolling shit with currency, and selling stuff (the game's economy is really cool with poe.trade being a thing). Then the other 5% is actual combat =P It's more of a strategy game than an RPG lol

You can bring up the microtransaction menu, right side is your current character and left side is what MTXs you have available. Clicking one will apply it to your character menu on the right side.

Why do you bind the click as the footprint? Does it offer some kind of advantage?
Just easy to navigate. I bind movement to left click and my main skill to right click.
You want to ensure that you have movement hard binded just to avoid situations where you're trying to move out of a dangerous situation and instead your character is busy trying to hit something with basic attacks. It offers an advantage in that when you click that bind you will move and not do anything else, which could be the difference between surviving and dying. And yeah even on softcore dying matters at higher levels. Hope that helps :)
What's a wekey?
So i have about 15 hours POE now, and a friend of mine helped me understand the game but i was still confused, but watching the video clarified alot of questions i had. So far im going for a build that uses the flaming skeleton heads for the witch, raging spirit or something like that. And I was given some good gear from him, but my strength and dexterity stats are wayy to low to equip it.. The gear had maybe 60 required dex and str to equip, but I only have 25 on each, how do i increase those stats. So far im level 40 with about 150 intellect and 25 str / dex. Please help because alot of good gear i have with many sockets require alot more stats in those 2 then i currently have.
Don't level your gems up so high. SRS is a good build. If you're a witch, you shouldn't use dex and strength required gear. Use intelligence gear. Witch has easy access to the best energy shield nodes on the tree. You might eventually need some strength if you plan on using a good staff or something, but you don't really need good gear until late-cruel difficulty. Just farm the Dried Lake until you have enough currency to buy some good fitting stuff off poe.trade.
Why do you have 3 hotkeys for walking?
I had no other skills to put in those slots, and my autism was forcing me to put something there so it wasn't a null space.

Yes, it's done the same way. Steam installs the game in the same location.

Im only level 8 and i feel like you shouldet get a item filter untill later on into the game because when you are low level its good to find random things on the ground to just sell.
The Item Filters adapt with you as you level. For example, at a low level it won't filter out Driftwood Wands and shit like that. But once you reach higher levels, it will start to parse out the lower level items.

LOL I have them equipped (usually), I just forget to pop them in lower-tier maps (sometimes I forget it'd be nice to have a bit more defense/DPS).

Unfortunately not, lad. Everything you see in-game takes place on their servers, we just interact with the servers per instance.
How do we go into multiplayer with our friends on xbox? I can get my buddy in my group but I don't see him in game. :/
If it's anything like PC, the game is instance based. This means you have to join the same instance as him. If you're in a party together, this would just involved going to the same location on your map as him. Or if you're doing end-game maps, you just have to go to his hideout.
Okay okay, they just released this on Xbox 1 not to long ago so we were trying to get into questing with one another but now I see how it works. He said if we cant quest an what not with one another then he wont play it. >.>

could you tell me what endurance charges do and what they are good for? and also what classes use them more
Endurance charges are stackable buffs (you can see them by the light red orbs that hover around your character). They only last a few seconds, but they're very defensive. They give you more physical damage reduction and elemental resistance. It isn't much, but some builds utilize them with certain uniques or other skills (such as Immortal Call which consumes all of your endurance charges and makes you immune for a very small period of time). Endurance charges are mainly used with melee/strength based characters.
Power charges are another type of charge you could acquire which raises critical hit chance. Frenzy charges increases attack and movement speed.

Nah man, uniques drop so fucking randomly it's nearly impossible to really "farm" for them until you get to end-game raids like Atziri (Apex of Sacrifice). Low-level uniques drop at random as you're leveling, but they're so cheap to buy that it really isn't worth the time and effort. High-level farming areas consist of Merciless Dried Lake in Act 4 and Izaro's Labyrinth.
The gear that drops does it become soulbound at all? Can you trade any item you get at any time? And how the fuck do you get pants for a marauder, im lvl 22 and havent had pants yet. sorry im newbie with PoE.
You can trade any item at any time, and any item could be modified at anytime as well unless the item is mirrored or corrupted. Pants aren't an equippable item. Your body armor is all one piece (torso, legs, shoulders, etc.). It's actually a running meme because armor for marauder builds usually doesn't consist of pants :)

Yep! You could also roll them as you would any item if you see them. You can use transmutes, alchemy orbs, chaos, etc.
any build ideas?
I'm currently having TONS of fun with Ziggy D's Vacuum Blast Rain build. It's a very powerful close-combat archer with a sort of "Rain of Arrows" attack. It's a pretty cheap build, tons of fun, very powerful and I haven't even gotten to the end-game yet. I also tried making a Spark Scion and Flame Totem Templar but both of those got very boring to level with.
I plan on being ballsy and starting the new league with a Phys/Crit Reave Shadow (self-built). It didn't work out last time I tried it, but fuck it. It looks fun. If it works, I'll post a video.
