MultiVersus is now out in soft launch as of the time of me writing this, heck you can even earn trophies on playstation! So since its semi, sorta out now, I figure good as time as any for a Beginners guide! Now if you are used to smash/platform fighters in general a lot of the concepts will probably already made a good amount of sense to you so use the timestamps to skip around to whatever makes sense for you. As someone who is much more on the traditional fighting game side of things compared to platform fighters I do have to say, I dig it! Maybe its the 2v2, maybe its the savagery around the only way to not get hit, is to not be in the way, maybe its just jake the dog, but I like it! Hope this video can help you out! ***CORRECTION*** later in the video on the combo section, you can dodge out of strings/moves early due to the attack decay feature, which lowers hitstun, not due to the higher damage of the opponent. My bad!
Yeah il watch this on july 26
When is hard launch?
@@eSKAone- no idea, they got no announced date. This is basically launch though, like I can earn trophies on playstation and platinum the game if I set my mind to it.
@@rooflemonger Yeah but beta will end right? So it's no lasting pleasure at this point in time.

More Multiversus in the future? maybe!? As always on this channel we sorta play it by ear, god knows how I ever made it this far honestly lol. Evo is soon! Expect lots of goodies there and naturally full coverage on the channel when it all drops.
More multiversus
Glad to see you covering this game, your alpha stream is what convinced me to try it and it's a lot of fun.
I hope so 😺
Yes please, this is my new favorite game and your my favorite fgc commentator. Haven't had this much fun since dbfz
Yes please! :D
I always admire your commitment to making beginner resources for -basically- every new fighting game. Now, If you'll excuse me, I'm gonna get out there and play some Multiversus.
The attack decay made certain combos not extend that actually would at those healths. That created a variable that brought false info. Attack decay does less knock back, and less hitstun
I have already updated the pinned comment about that, yes. my bad.
Recently started watching because kof15 is my first fighter and I was so frustrated trying to figure it out bit your long, in depth videos have helped me so much
it's nuts how fast you are with these. as someone who sucks at evaluating characters and systems, but does enjoy picking up new fighting games, your work is very appreciated. eased me into strive, into dnf, now this. :)
This is my job so I treat it seriously, I pulled an all-nighter to make sure this guide was live
@@rooflemonger and you're a god damn legend for that! much love man
Sick guide Rooflemonger, as always, your community resources are best in class and I hope that this content brings in a ton of new viewers to your channel!
well thank you for the kind words, appreciated!
Love the guides - keep em coming bro
Wasn't expecting a guide but glad to see it!
Great video! You explained it with great detail and I was engaged throughout the whole thing, nice job! Keep up the good work!👍
New to your channel, excellent quality video. This game looks so fun!
I absolutely needed this, thanks.
I think it's an excellent beginner's guide on a platform fighter coming from someone who doesn't play as many platform fighters! ^^
If I may, there's one thing I wanna point out, notice how when you landed the same move 4 times in a row, you get "Attack Decay" for that move. (kinda similar to "Staling" in Smash) And from what I'm seeing here, your move's now doing about 2/3s of the damage and its launch rate is weaker as well, so it might be good to try landing different moves to get rid of it if you want to finish your opponents off with them!
yeah updated pinned comment about that, misread the situation that was happening. Happens when you are working on no sleep to get a video out by a certain day :( the attack decay also effects hitstun in this game.
I actually really like the traits system. It adds more variety.
I literally was just wondering if you were going to do a guide 😎 always on it
Another great Beginner guide
Thank you for your hard work Roof!
💪🐵
thanks for all of the great content!
Thanks as always !
I love the simplicity of this game so fun.
This guide really makes me confident to try and play MultiVersus. I'm also not into platform fighters (my favorite fighting games are Garou and KoF 2002), but I think I'll check this one out.
Hell yea man thank you!!! Will try this game tonight
Best beginner guide on RUclips.
🙏
Amazing content as always! Thank you so much for making learning new fighting games so easy! :D
very nice guide. thank you!
This was sooo much more helpful and informative than the tutorial. This was an amazing video!
This video really helped me out liked and subbed 👍
This is a very good thorough guide. It’s more useful after playing for a while though. I’ve played about 100 games and because I already knew the foundation, I’m able to focus and memorise things from the guide. For example I didn’t know bigger characters received less knockback at low health percentages but I’ll remember it easier because I don’t need to focus on remembering dodge mechanics and such.
Basically if you’re new, play first and then watch this
The beginning I wasn’t sure if I’d learn much and the mid and late portion of the video I learned quite a lot. Definitely a big help thank you.
Totally Random Note: That Steven Universe orchestral theme playing in the background is pretty dope.
Thank you for this
Great video! I LOVE playing Iron Giant so far!!
yeah he rules
Smash University also pointed out that you can also cancel some moves into special moves. Dash cancel is notable because you can dodge cancel almost any time during any charge attack.
They also pointed out that aerials have to finish before you touch the ground; you can see this with the Harley Quinn combo. For me personally when using default controls for a controller; if I plink the jump button into the attack button I can easily do attacks instantly off the ground. The only changes I made to the controls is putting LB/L1 and RB/R1 to alternate buttons for attack and special attack instead of their neutral variants.
nice video, game seems fun, getting it today.
A correction on the weakened debuff: It actually makes you take more damage and receive more knock back from attacks while you have it.
i just downloaded the game and havent even played it and i think that this is very informational as i dont play any platform fighters thank you so much
Bro! ive been with you since about 1,000 subscribers. Thank you! I’m so happy you’re true to covering ALL fighters. I just picked this up and was hoping for a Rooflemonger breakdown! Yes!!
Well I can't cover every fighter, but I try to cover as many as I can!
One bit of wrong info in this vid.
"Attack Decay" making combos drop has nothing to do with how high their damage is. Its a penalty for using a move too often. The Smash equivalent is known as "stale moves". In Smash it only affects damage dealt and knockback, not hit-stun. You can use other moves for a while or die to remove the debuff from whichever move is affected.
oh dear I misread the situation, my bad! I will update the pinned comment!
Thanks for the video man, just got into multiversus i main finn, thanks for the tips
I think they should change the 2v2 system tbh, in brawlhalla you and your teammate both have 3 stocks which are independant from the other player's stocks, that meansyou can still carry but in multiversus if your teammate is bad the enemy team can just focus on killing him and win the game easily

Seeing Wonder woman's down special "oh cool, they gave her shine"
Rooflemonger: "this garbage, nothing attack"
Oh buddy, never underestimate a shine attack.
That ain’t a shine buddy. Way too slow to act as one.
@@firstwaddledee9182 what's that
@@LaserBungalow Shine is the down special of Fox + Falco in Smash. Its notorious for its speed (coming out in a very few frames) and being spammable and comboing into other moves easily. Since its a hitbox all around you it can be used kinda defensively too if someone is right on top of you. Fox and Falco are some of the best characters in Melee, a very popular and most competitive iteration of Smash.
@@LaserBungalow and Wonder Woman’s down attack is much too slow to act as said shine. Also I don’t think it reflects projectiles like a shine would, nor do I think it’s cancelable like one.
It's not a shine, it's more of a area attack to use to edge guard
As someone who never played platformer combat games or any other similiar game AND haven’t played any game for the past 2 years, this was quite helpful
Very informative I only started least week amazing game 😅
As someone who keeps up on both traditional and platform fighting game scenes, its funny to hear rooflemonger's turn of phrase betray that he doesn't play platform fighters much. Its like talking to someone from another country who speaks with a perfect accent, but uses idioms from the 80s.
I already play just about every fighting game ever pls forgive my lack of platform experience
I can’t wait to see tournaments of this game
23:38 The basic hit should always be a true combo no matter the damage, but because of the attack decay, the hitstun of the move is lowered to make it escapable.
Thank you
better tutorial than the one in game. Ty
Can’t wait to play
Very good explained. Many Smash RUclipsrs use SO much special language...
I gotta lot to learn especially since this is my first fighter. Didn’t really play platform fighters growing up.
I’ve played this so much since yesterday😭
A key part of defense you missed was directional influence (DI) its really important to prevent your self from getting comboed longer and to prevent yourself from getting knocked out early. I'd also mention that up specials typically help w recovery.
is the DI in this game from the regular 8-way movement? reason I'm asking is bc I want to play on my fightstick cause I usually play traditional FG's, but I heard that arcade sticks were viable for MultiVerses cause its 8 way instead of analouge.
There is also a perk (tazmanian trigonometry, i think) that increases the effectiveness of DI
Nice!
Kudos this helped... Now Lets Game
Speaking of SubZero I just wanna say WB owns Netherealm Studios. I really hope we get some MK charaters.
I can't wait to tryout sentinel i mean iron giant
Subbing! You make some great vids! I like your voice because it reminds me of Chef John from the Food Wishes channel.
I get that a lot
What button do you press to use the enemy’s ability when you steal the face with Arya idk how to do it I tried everything
@Rooflemonger I thought this would be the legitimately perfect time to start documenting this in my phone’s notes so I can start learning the basics as soon as this game drops on next Tuesday.
I must say I’m excited as we don’t get too many fun free to play fighting games with so many popular well known characters, and being a huge DC Comics fan particularly of Batman and his rogues gallery I can’t wait to play them.
I played a bit of the open beta/soft launch last summer I believe it was but, I never played much but, I can’t wait to do this and get more in depth guides for this game at launch which I’m sure you’ll be doing
I don't know much about this genre of fighting games. Fantastic video mate.
5:00 when u were talking about fast falling Jakes neutral air there's actually a mechanic in most platform fighters called "short hopping" where you release the jump button BEFORE your character is in the air and you'll get a shorter jump that you can use aerials from.
yeah but that doesn't give you the same angles of attack. Like a quick hop iron giant attack is all but useless cause he's too high up, you need the fast fall to get the right angle. Short hops are decent depending on the character, but jake using that specific attack doesn't benefit from it, he needs fast fall.
@@rooflemonger ah, okay gotchu. My b I thought that would work. Keep up the good work on the videos bro. Been watching ur vids since day 1 dbfz. 🤟🤟
Any chance of an updated version for the re-release this week? Interested to see what you think of the new version.
It's interesting seeing this from someone who's experience is based in traditional fighters. I'm curious to see how this game handles things like DI, teching, and stale moves(attack decay)
Regarding the combo, That was not just damage causing it to stop working, it was the hit decay.
Great video! All my homies hate the batcave
ty
How do you jump in the game? Does it follow the standard fighting games approach (press up) or a platform games approach (press one of the face buttons, for example "x" on playstation)?
jump is its own button, but you can also change it to up if you want. The ability to change your control setup is very generous
@@rooflemonger That's awesome, thanks man!
@@dotintegral Also check out the audio and UI settings!
These games are known as "platform fighters" so treat them as platformers when you move around, its the biggest separation from traditional FGC
I can always count on Rooflemonger to explain fighting games
Thank you the explanation. Wish we can bring in Hanna-Barbera characters like Spaceghost and BirdMan etc.
I thought maybe a 15 minute video but this goes deep
I can't seem to combo the jump cancel into boxing glove. The bot just dodges out before my glove lands. Am i supposed to press jump right after the second hit then immediately press down attack? It doesn't look like i am doing fast enough i guess.
thanks
How do you jump/dodge cancel for combos? Is there a button input because I didn’t understand the video well
just jump, or dodge, simple as that. Not every move or chain of attacks lets you cancel out of it, for that you will have to test it out yourself
nair fair bair and uair for aerials is what we call it in smash/platform fighters
I’ve all been a button masher, and it don’t think that’s going to change soon!!!
I’ve found a bug for Lebron where the game doesn’t recognise if have the ball or not so it shows u holding it, but u do basic moves and can’t combo at all.
I literally downloaded the game and won 10 games in a row, i guess its all thanks to smash, but honestly this game feels nothing at all like smash amd thats a good thing, its still fun
Idk how to navigate the store. I REALLY wanna buy the BMO announcer pack but I can't find it at all.
How do I get into the beta if I was in the technical test?
Damn right I’ll leave a like!
hooray
Will you be streaming this sometime soon for people looking to get keys?
I did for hours last night actually! Will also be streaming with drops enabled on Thursday and Friday!
Please please please do an Arya Stark tutorial! She seems like so much fun and I am having quite the hard time learning her moveset
Mad lads finally made it... the ultimate and definitive manchild game
10:50 arya is an assassin, by default they take an increase to damage recieved, iron giant is a tank so it's harder to show the weight as a difference between the two honestly hard to know for sure from that example
she takes 14% more and its not a big deal. The weight values are already out and iron giant weighs like 3x more than she does. Its an incredibly fair and correct example to show.
17:43 the platforms actually go up and down when you hit the big levers on the two sides
oh do they? I guess always just caught up on the match I didn't catch that detail, good eye!
This game is a nice surprise. It's freakishly smooth, very responsive, has crossplay and the online actually seems to work. And it's free... so... if they actually keep tweaking this a bit it might finally be a good alternative to Brawlhalla and Smash. Well, for me Smash wasn't ever an option due to the horrid online experience.
Its like smash bros and the distance of the launch from damage
This game is going to get me SO long to get used to
First video watching, are you doing the Food Wishes guy's voice??
I can't even figure out how to play. I've went to their website and signed up for an account etc. Still can't figure it out
How do I dodge on the xbox series x version?
Just here to leave a comment and like. I'll watch this a bit later
🙏
So, is there no forward smash vs forward tilt. Only one forward attack?
Actually 3 or 4
Nice video! I'm new to platform fighting games I mostly play Tekken and I don't know how to move in this game when should I Jump or Dodge? Anyone got any tips? And I seem to Always miss my opponent
Well you should always be moving really, dodge is your only defensive move so early on just use it when you think you are gonna get hit. It can actually help movement quite a bit as well but one step at a time there. As for hitting the opponent that just comes with familiarity, more you play the more it will make sense.
Nice thanks. hit the like
how do you equip a character??
Does anyone know where I can submit feedback or suggestions?
What is the difference between normal and neutral attack? I don’t play a lot of fighting game so this is my first beside smash
Neutral attack is attack, but without hitting any direction. By default there is a button dedicated to it as well so you can move around without accidentally getting other attacks
@@rooflemonger Ah thanks. It just confuses me as a non competitive fighter
Watched the guide before downloading the game. Turns out I can't play it as Asia isn't a supported region.
You would thing there would be an offline mode or something, right?
Do this for every character
How do you main people?
