But there are strong-minded deeply religious people that have a better head on their shoulders. Their "dependency" on religion is just shown differently. One person's dependency on religion might look like parroting what other people say without thinking for themselves while another may adopt the "just live and let God" approach (which is saying "I have no control over this, so whatever happens happens. I have to trust in God's plan to get through this").

My friend has a very religious roommate in college. One time he brought a girl home and was going to have sex before marriage (GASP). The religious roommate saw this, and instead of just minding his business, he refused to leave and instead played the guitar and sang christian songs for them both until the mood was sufficiently un-sexy. The girl was like wut, and eventually just asked to leave.

In all seriousness through, I feel like the woman at around 7:00 is an example of someone who wouldn’t be homophobic if it weren’t for the bible. She’s not (as far as I can tell) coming from a place of hate. She doesn’t seem to be saying that he’s disgusting or whatever a lot of homophobic people do, but she seems genuinely distressed. It seems to me that she’s simply terrified for him because she’s been taught that he’s going to suffer for eternity because he’s gay. I’m not saying this to suggest that what she’s saying is correct or not harmful, I just think it’s interesting to see the two types of people in these types of arguments. this rant is probably pretty pointless and no one is gonna read all of this but i feel like ranting so here: on that section where watered down casey frey is talking about artists selling their soul to the devil, i just want to say that that phrase for artists is a euphemism. its supposed to highlight the corruption and insincerity of entertainment labels. there's contracts that literally dictate that the company can "use the artist's likeness and image across the known universe" and shit. Dave Chappelle has a whole segment on it in one of his specials where he tells his story about Chappelle's Show and how Comedy Central screwed him over majorly. these labels literally make you sign over your image, likeness, and creativity and keep you obligated under a contract to make content for them, essentially selling your soul to a soulless corporate entity who has you under their thumb and can do whatever they want to you. and its not very difficult to see these corporations as heartless monsters looking to suck all the value they can out of you as the devil, especially when they're promising you something like fame and fortune in place for what essentially is your soul. ive seen enough shit from artists to see that this is very widespread in show business. its gone on for so long that pink floyd made a song (Have a Cigar, you should check it out, its really good) that literally highlights how little of a shit labels give about an artist and how theyre only looking for profit. this thing where people think artists are actually selling their souls to the actual devil is ridiculous as fuck and i dont know how there are people that take that seriously. its a callout to the corruption in the industry. stop using it to demonize artists.

I attended a private Christian school when this came out. Every kid in my class lost their minds over his video. Many people claimed he deserved to die because of it. It's terrifying that people really do think that way.
In all seriousness through, I feel like the woman at around 7:00 is an example of someone who wouldn’t be homophobic if it weren’t for the bible. She’s not (as far as I can tell) coming from a place of hate. She doesn’t seem to be saying that he’s disgusting or whatever a lot of homophobic people do, but she seems genuinely distressed. It seems to me that she’s simply terrified for him because she’s been taught that he’s going to suffer for eternity because he’s gay.
I’m not saying this to suggest that what she’s saying is correct or not harmful, I just think it’s interesting to see the two types of people in these types of arguments. There are the ones that are genuinely scared for people and the ones who are purely hateful.

this rant is probably pretty pointless and no one is gonna read all of this but i feel like ranting so here:
on that section where watered down casey frey is talking about artists selling their soul to the devil, i just want to say that that phrase for artists is a euphemism. its supposed to highlight the corruption and insincerity of entertainment labels. there's contracts that literally dictate that the company can "use the artist's likeness and image across the known universe" and shit. Dave Chappelle has a whole segment on it in one of his specials where he tells his story about Chappelle's Show and how Comedy Central screwed him over majorly. these labels literally make you sign over your image, likeness, and creativity and keep you obligated under a contract to make content for them, essentially selling your soul to a soulless corporate entity who has you under their thumb and can do whatever they want to you.
and its not very difficult to see these corporations as heartless monsters looking to suck all the value they can out of you as the devil, especially when they're promising you something like fame and fortune in place for what essentially is your soul. ive seen enough shit from artists to see that this is very widespread in show business. its gone on for so long that pink floyd made a song (Have a Cigar, you should check it out, its really good) that literally highlights how little of a shit labels give about an artist and how theyre only looking for profit.

Basically, my parents are super cool, religious but not like that, that was one of my teachers in high school so I hopefully will never see her or the other jerks from that school again. I'm thriving in college now, 5 hours away from my hometown. Its great. No one from my high school is at school with me. I never run into anyone at the store. It's nice being somewhere that isn't so white southern Christian.
