      I was a youngster when Christian Rock became this big industry, and I remember thinking the same thing- music reviewers would write these judgmental, accusatory screeds against [ insert some of my favorite artists here] while recommending Christian artists that just blatantly ripped off their style. I thought then ( as I do now)- what incredible ingratitude. If they were good enough to copy, at least have the grace to give them credit.
      ( And anyway, listening to someone’s song is listening to their point of view, and my Jesus didn’t teach me to be afraid of other people’s point of view. It might just give me insight I didn’t have before.)

At the time all I wanted was validation from an older person I respected because I didn't get it at home, and they made me feel so alienated that I just grew this hatred for youth group. Yeah I'm really worried about him tbh. A fair amount of young Christians end up being drawn to the church through the idea that suffering=holiness and the reward comes after death. Its a good incentive for people to dig deeper into their sorrow and cry out to God rather than seeking professional help.

    The Catholic Church literally has smoke, lights, and action. They use a thurible, a device which emits incense smoke, they have stained glass windows, and they use things like song and ritual. These were all adopted because they attracted more followers or kept the congregation coming back. Same thing with fantastic art and architecture. Practically speaking, the church must provide something people actually want if they are gonna expect their congregations to keep coming back. Entertainment and aesthetic pleasure is part of that, although arguably the message and the activism of the church are far more substantial.

      Wasn't a lot of the grandest Catholic art and architecture made during the time when western Europe was basically a fundamentalist religious monoculture? With Jewish communities, of course. But why would they have needed to attract followers during the medieval period? They were almost universally dominant in their regions before the Restoration, and it's not like atheism was a thing. I'm actually asking, I don't know where you're coming from and I'm curious about it

    • @fiandrafulchiati4901
      @fiandrafulchiati4901 3 года назад +7

      @@chasm6091 I think it's because you need to keep people coming back. Since the beginning of Christianity, churches have been playing with their ability to evoke some deep emotion and offer guidance, even to illiterate people, so that the world could be made easier to process. Also if people come often, they make more offers and the church gets richer, so a win win ahah

    • @benjaminrobinson7203
      @benjaminrobinson7203 3 года назад +7

      @@chasm6091 Actually, that wasn't the case. Several offshoots like the Cathars, the Waldensians, Albigensians, and early Irish Catholics were considered heretical by the Catholic church and were persecuted against during the medieval period. And, of course, levantine Christians and Orthodox Christians were seen as heretics as well. Also, how secular or clerical, how relaxed or devout a person or community was at any given time is difficult to say, especially as it pertains to peasant communities. We know more about the religious beliefs and practices of elites, particularly those living in urban areas, than we do for the rural poor. As much as the Catholic church wanted to be the universal and to have everyone follow their doctrine to the letter, such was not the case. The reformation movement of the 15th and 16th centuries and onward did not come from nowhere. It was building up over centuries of dissatisfaction with the Papacy and experimentation with new approaches to Christian religion. Furthermore, atheism, however fringe, did exist. We know this because theologians like William of Ockham and Thomas Aquinas made responses to people doubting God's existence or proofs that he did in fact exist. I have to admit, before I took a class of medieval history, I wouldn't have believed it either, but Papal Supremacy was not as secure as it appeared.

      @@veronicajata3121 Several theologians, philosophers, and lay people questioned the Eucharist throughout history too, and there were debates and discussions regarding whether it was cannibalistic. There was a rocky road to the creation and cementing of Church canon and doctrine, and newly converted pagan communities didn't always sit well with the rules and rituals they were being asked to follow.
