Is this an issue when the saw is stored and sitting in the upright position? If so I have a Remington Outlaw RM4620 saw that does the same thing. I bought it brand new and used it the first time, stored it away and went back the next day and all my bar oil had leaked out.

    Why rush it eh?

Steve, first off, thank you for this video. I wanted to tell you that the orange plastic plug can also be found on some of the mid-size Stihl chainsaws, or at least it was there on the old ones. I have a 1993 Stihl 029, 54.1 cc, called the "Farm Boss" back then -- today's Farm Boss (the 271) is a bit smaller, 50.2 cc, but has similar performance, apparently. The current 291 is closer in engine size (55.5 cc).
Anyway, my old 029 has had a slow oil-leak for years. After seeing this video, I checked, and sure enough, it has the orange plastic plug, and it was almost out of its hole. I tried pressing it back in, but after only a couple hours run-time it was backing out again.
I ordered the little set-screw from my local Stihl repair shop (...and you were right, they didn't even know about this problem). I installed the set screw, with one thread visible, and the oil leak stopped...BUT the set-screw wasn't very tightly held, and after a few days working on winter blow-downs, it had worked it's way out almost another full thread. I removed it, cleaned the hole and the screw with some non-chlorinated brake cleaner, replaced the screw with just a tiny drop of blue LocTite, and it has stayed fixed for the last month of work. Problem solved. Thank you.
One last question: I used engine degreaser for years to get rid of all the oil-soaked sawdust (...yeah, I'm a bit OCD about getting it really clean), but I didn't like using water to rinse, so I switched to brake-cleaner (non-chlorinated to protect the plastic). Last year I grabbed a can of (what I thought was) non-chlorinated brake cleaner, but it was the chlorinated variety. I thought maybe I'd ruined the saw. But to my surprise, it didn't seem to do any damage to the cover-assembly or any of the other plastic parts. So was I just lucky? I really liked that it cleaned better, and evaporated instantaneously, unlike the non-chlorinated stuff. I'd like to keep using it, but I worry that long-term use could damage the saw. What say you, Steve?

A great thank you, Steve. Most dealers know nothing about this 000 953 1001 solution. I had this problem (dry chain plus oily chainsaw and floor), which ruined my chain, my bar and I don't know if the piston /segments also... The solution proposed by the dealer was to make a short iron cillinder to obturate the hole. What I did instead was taking a M6 allen screw, shortening it and tapering the threads at the end. It solved the problem. Unfortunately I didn't watch your vid by this time. Your information is so needed! (even for dealers). Many people is complaining of this problem. I thought this issue affected just to my model (MS 230), but I see this is not the case.

Once again Steve to the rescue.... Watched my buddy pull out his ms170 from its case 2 days ago and the case was swimming in oil and the saw was horrendously soaked in oil... he just wiped it off and put some oil in it and went about his business... When i asked him what the hell is wrong he just said its been leaking for 15 years and still works so meh... i couldn't believe it... My chainsaws are SPOTLESS. I use them hard when i use them but they are gleaming before they go back to their storage cases. So i just happened upon this video and voila! I shall be fixing his MS170 tomorow! If I'm ever out in BC im taking Steve out for steak and beers...

My old 036 has leaked bar oil since it was new back in 1994. I just assumed that it was normal. It’s been a great saw. Cut a lot of firewood with it over the years and it’s never even had a carb kit put in it. It Stihl runs like a beast but it sure makes a mess inside the plastic case I keep it in.

It's been leaking oil since almost as long as I've had it but I didn't bother doing anything about it since it mostly sits in the garage. Thing always needs worked on, won't cut even with a new chain, no power.......pain in the butt. I'll stick with my Huskies.....they are the best saws I own. Thanks for the tip Steve - recently purchased my first Stilh chainsaw (MS-291) - I cut about 4 cords of wood a year - I bought it from a local Stihl dealer - I used it for less than an hour and half a tank of fuel (the fuel the dealer filled it with) - After using it to cut down an ash tree and cut a few limbs and two 8 foot logs it would not restart to cut a third 8 footer - It required a new carb to fix which the dealer performed under warranty - I would love to hear what your thoughts - Cheers

I got an 064 av stihl that leaks oil. Thought I'd store it on its side. Still leaks. The M3 threaded plug looks like it comes with some type of blue sealer goop on the threads. If its loctite, would be a good idea to dip a couple q-tips in alcohol and clean the female threads so it seals properly. I ran into that issue with loctite in the past where it wont work if threads are oily. Enjoyed the video! I love a beer called grainbelt nordeast! Nector of the gods! 🍺🍺😆

Now I will have to check to see if my Echo 310 has the same issue allowing all its oil to pool in the same tailgate. I have learned this as well. If half a can of C2 H5 02 (ethyl alcohohol) is enough for you it will take a full can or a can and a half for me to get it done as time is the issue as I have. Great stuff Steve!

It's most likely leaking from the oil tank vent. Take off the bar and look for a little round (spring loaded) vent. Give it a blast with an air hose.

Heck I just bought a tanks vent hose its just a 2 inch hose with 2 grub screws. The Stihl dealer charged me 30.00 dollars.. Where is the best place to get parts? I have a Stihl 009 that needs a replacement fuel tank vent tube with the weird set screw/check valve in it. The Stihl service shop I had stopped into a couple of years ago (out of business now) wanted a $65 bench fee just to pull the numbers to get the right part and I'm sure that the part costs WAY less than that!!! I have a small piece of hose with a sheet metal screw stuffed in it to keep the fuel from leaking. I do use it from time to time for small stuff and for a short run time. The ol'girl runs great and I just want to get the correct parts to make it run the way it should. Thank you in advance!!!!

I think you're doing a super job and I am so grateful for all you're doing to assist us DIY guys to learn ways to be self reliant. I hope you continue the videos. By the way, Abe was right. You can't please all the people all the time. John Fletcher

That is not always the fix. I just had to change the hose between the oil tank and the body on my MS 180C and believe you me I had to dismantle almost the entire saw and take the handle off, unless of course there are special gremlins which will crawl in behind the handle rail underneath the saw body. $7.00 part and 4 hours work for me. Self done for free.

I do the same. Just checked for the set screw on my MS250 and it’s there. Not sure why it’s designed to dump oil.

My Husqvarna leaks oil. Different fix?

I had an old husky from 84 and the case leaked oil and had hard starting issues. The only fix was to split the case and reseal. It worked for 6 more years before I sold it. Not sure if this helps you or not, but just my 2 cents.

That plug missing is exactly my problem, Thank you very much..... but along with that issue, my muffler is super seized on, meaning I can order new muffler bolts and nuts, or it looks to me I can get that set screw in without removing the muffler, there is barely a straight shot directly at it once I remove the bar/chain. The other option for me, before I order the set screw, is to see if they sell the plastic plugs anywhere... maybe an old chainsaw repairman is selling them on ebay for 2 bucks a piece. The question, is can I weasel a plug in easier with the muffler on, or will it be easier putting chewing gum on the set screw, and poking it into the hole... I have precise tools to weasel it past the muffler, I also am a heart surgeon along with being a logger and signmaker.... lol... I sure don't wanna mess with the muffler if I don't got to. I bought this saw probably back in 1989 and have done nothing to it since, except add gas, oil and bars and chains. :) wish me luck, it looks like a 40oz Budweiser job to me. (UPDATE: I couldn't find it on ebay by number.... until I found out it was called a "grub screw". I live in BFE Michigan, so online ordering is my only option compared to heading to a city to a dealer/repair shop)

If it's too long, cut it with a dremel, itl fix your problem till you get that original part.

I have a Dolmar chainsaw sittin in a 70 by 40 cm puddle of oil in my garage. Seems to me the oil leaked out slowly over night.
I could not find a similar plug/opening like the one shown on the Stihl saw in this video.
    Any suggestions?

      Never mind.
The problem seems to have been that i am a f***ing genius and screwed the oil cap on crooked. -.-
      Yeap...i´m all kinds of good.

Steve, I have watched many of your videos and appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us. I have a Stihl 041 AV that I bought new many years ago. But it has an oil leak from the oil tank and I can’t figure out how to replace whatever it is I need to replace to get it to stop. Since there are still many of these old saws out there, could you possibly show us how to replace the oil line or get that thing to stop leaking. Thanks

it's called "planned obsolescence", like many features on all saws. They do'n't make their $$$ on sales , but more so on maintenance. If you were to buy a complete saw by purchasing every part individually from a dealership, you will be shocked to see your difference. Flaw in design are engineered into the saw to fail in specific times to insure job security for the dealerships repair shop. For instance: have you noticed the plastic bearing cage on the clutch/bell bearing? Or the in-tank fuel line that turns soft after a years use? ignition coils? carburator metering diaphram, case seals? If chainsaws and cars were built like aircraft, they would seldom see a shop.
