Gee, I thought I was being creative when I came up with this idea a few weeks ago, but you beat me 😂 They should come with a removable section to allow access to that hose & pump. I eventually went the difficult route and disassembled. Funny thing is that before I got it fully apart, I realized that the oil hose had come out of the bottom of the pump. That means it was never installed properly. Once that hose end is pushed into place properly, it cannot fall out on its own. It is well protected too, so not pulled out by branches or whatever. Shame, as my saw is quite new and from a Stihl dealer. Bad enough that they are cheaply made, but when quality control goes out the window too, we are really getting shafted. BTW, the disassembly went well as I only damaged 1 of the plastic push caps. Easy inexpensive part from Amazon. Keep up the great creative ideas!
I bought a brand new MS 182 C-BE and it leaks like crazy. Just hate to cut it already. Think I'm going to try and see if they will do any warranty work first.
Yea I’m with you on this one - frustrating how the unit is buttoned up so you can’t access the oiler. Hope you’ve solved the issue with silicone…I believe you did - I think that the fuel and oil tanks heat up and expand during use which in turn effects the fittings and even the tank caps…at least in my experience. Cheers
That a good fix in my book Steve. Your saw makes my cheap Poulan look like $100 bucks....Through away society, and some people take it and just love it.....not me....your fix is just perfect from what I can see.....if it solve the problem, it’s good.....CHEERS
good vid . i always thought as far as new saws , stihl was the best option , but i think i will just stick with my mac 10 an pionere . may be heavy but still kicking since early 80's
My friend has a leaking ms 260. Thinks Stihl is great. Gave it to me. I've been a fan of other brands. The 260 looks flimsy and leaks maybe same way with cheezy assembly like yours. Ill see if Stihl is any good. looks cheezy and flimsy. Wee will see.
Wow! You had me rolling with laughter on the “cheesy” comment! 😂 Great idea for a fix! Hey, Stihl saws aint so bad. They never leak bar oil, or are hard to start, or smoke a lot, eh 😂 J/K I recently picked up the MS180, which is virtually identical to your saw, with a tiny bit more power. I never noticed the lack of carb adjustment, until after I got it home. It’s a plastic fantastic! Sheesh! The joints where the see thru windows for gas and lube, dont come together well. And the person that commented below about why you just didn’t remove the handle, well, they obviously never had/seen one of these. Ive only run about 10-12 tanks through mine, but the saw does well for what it is. i got it for much the same reason you use yours, Steve. I have so many small downed branches, and briars and junk, so I needed something light and easy to maneuver, and it does well. I just hold her WOT and use it like a laser! Works well. The small chain is a pain to keep sharp! My two Makita/Dolmars DO NOT leak a drop! *touch wood*. Let us know how this works out. Always appreciate your common sense and no nonsense approach to things, Steve. Peace 👍👍👍😊
Thanks George, stihl makes a great saw and the low end models are not pro saws or cost pro prices so I figure a cheap fix for a cheap saw was in order. I have been using the saw and its dry as a bone and the peice of plastic missing is not noticed. Cheers 👍
@@SteveRobReviews You’re Welcome, and thanks for your reply! Glad to hear it is working out for you. Aww, the miracle of Silicone! Mine does ok, and only leaks after use, which can be expected. They are good little saws for what they’re intended for. Mine was ‘assembled’ in USA. Cheers!
"Chickanic" on her channel kept seeing the same disassembly problems on Stihl saws until she found out you had to buy a proprietary tool set from Stihl in order to get to, and then take apart their equipment. You're right though: this fixes the problem! 😏💯💯💯
smart, i like it, you're probably right, planned obsolescence! keeps people working to sell more saws, but people don't consider the landfills!! I Thank You!
I've had no problem taking apart & massaging back to alignment the 30 year old vibration bushes. The leaks are cap, tank hose etc. Ps all saws 👀 leak after use. It is the change in greater amount.
I didn't see this but thought the same thing and tried it. I cleaned the underside with brake cleaner, let it dry and filled it with sealant by squirting it under the plastic handle and let it cure in the sun for several hours. I placed it bottom down on clean cardboard and after several days the cardboard is still dry. Thank you, Steve Rob,
I sort of inherited a 170. I'm going to do what you did for the leak, but I noticed when I tighten up the oil and gas caps...there's a split around BOTH caps! ( about a 16th of an inch from the top of the caps ). Are these supposed to be there? You can't notice them until you tighten the caps Tight!!
That's how I know if there is oil in my Stihl saws. I pick them off the bench and if the bottom is covered with honey goo then I know I am ready to go!
Hey Soiuth Main! Thanks for commenting on his channel! 👍✌ And yes, I am a subscriber to your channel as well. Steve is just awesome, but dont tell him I said that! 😂
I didn’t think you had it in you….must’ve been really sick of those leaks! 😂 I’m thinking it’ll work, just a little cringe when you took the jig saw to it 😜
This is bone dry still , if I get any other leaks I will show it . So far so good but everyone I know that bought one has huge oil leaking. I hope they have fixed it by now .
If there is a orange plug it was corrected at the factory. If it's open order the set screw because it can be too long and block the passage to fat will crack the plastic.

Hi Ed
Well so far do good and I have used the saw to cut fallen trees on my road and the peice missing isn't missed 😅 cheers 👍
Great tip Steve, no more oil leak making a mess everywhere
Hi Lloyd
I cut a couple of trees since and it's still dry and works great.

Nicely done Steve! Unfortunately we live in a throw away society and companies lend to that way of thinking with their low end products. Thanks Buddy!
Hi Doug
This was a throwaway fix for a throwaway saw at its finest 👌
Keep your OUTSTANDING WORK and Spirits Steve Cheers !!!!
Thanks Dave 👍

Hi Greg
The new stihl value saws are priced right but built light too so stick with what you have it's 10 times better.
Old Pioneer saws are the best
There’s never an end to tools. Just when you think your done you find another one. Looks like your having fun. Keep warm bud.
HAHAHA so true Paul . My wifey says what the he'll is she going to do with all my crap some say 🤣😅
Neither one of my saw work anymore. Wow, that is nothing I would do. Your brave Steve. Good job Steve. No Vegetable oil used in this video, lol
Haha no vegetable oil just a lot of cutting 😅
Looks good to me Steve! You'll keep us updated I'm sure👍
Take care✌
Thanks Marc , I'm at the camp and I have been using the saw and no leaks 👍
I just bought one a year ago and it leaks super badly. I am going to try your trick
Mine is still bone dry after doing this and the saw works fine. Just make sure it's leaking at the bottom and not at the side oil outlet. Cheers 👍
Great hack, love your attitude!
Follow-up on your success, please!
Thanks Paul will do 👍

Hey bud absolutely 💯 % fixed 👍
I’ve replaced that line before. Next time it’s this fix! I almost thought Andrew Camarata was fixing it for you!🤣 Nice hack Steve👍
Thanks buddy much appreciated 👍 👍
Nice video steve, nice fix and it is hard to take apart for sure
Hi Jason
It's crazy engineering at it best , but it's a disposable saw so I performed a disposable fix 😅😅

Ya I bet the tool wasn't cheap either , fixed real good so far. Cheers 👍
Great vid Steve. That idea WILL come in handy. I have one of those CHEESY SAWS.. 👍👍
Hi Les
For a cheap saw a cheap fix was needed LOL Take Care bud 👍
Hahaha haaaaaaah! Awesome! Some saws just ain't worth the trouble of fixing the proper way. Nicely done Steve.
Hi Wally
I gave the saw the respect it deserved 😅😅

Is that oil resistant rtv that you used?
No leaks , problem solved . I used plain black silicone . RTV , sure use it if you like. Cheers Ryan.
Did you realy have to cut the bar, could you somehow put the silicone underit?
This was the easiest way for me , works the same ever since except no more oil leak.
I didn't see this but thought the same thing and tried it. I cleaned the underside with brake cleaner, let it dry and filled it with sealant by squirting it under the plastic handle and let it cure in the sun for several hours. @chrishowell3637 Hey bud, that's awesome that it worked for you without cutting the plastic bar 👍
Steve, I have the same saw and same issue. How has fit fix worked over the long term? Thank you.
@georgemitchell9114 Hi George , bone dry 👍
Hi Jim
Yes the split is correct, and under one side is a notch that fits a grove in the tank to form a seal.
@@SteveRobReviews LOL!! Thanks Steve! So I guess I should'nt have crazy glued them closed????
@@jimbo1959 HAHAHA
No, buy a new cap. They are cheap
I just store the chainsaw tilted 45 degrees with the filler cap side down. No bar oil in the case for a few years now.
Hi Yves
That a great idea for many but I transport mine in the back of my truck so this resolve fixed the leak great . Cheers 👍

I forgot to send well wishes your way Eric, thanks to Rob’s comment. I hope you and your Family are doing well. Take care! 😊
Why did you trim that part of handle? You had just remove handle and fix the problem!
Have you tried to remove the handle before . This is my way 👍
I love two stroke equipment but I don't like all the maintenance they require
Bruce its all maintance and they don't make it user friendly .
Its a great fix! You my kindof man Steve!!
Hi Wade
It's just geterdone and no time for pretty 😅😅
Thinking WAY outside the box. Way cool.
Thanks 👍
I didn’t think you had it in you….must’ve been really sick of those leaks! 😂 I’m thinking it’ll work, just a little cringe when you took the jig saw to it 😜
Dave it's works great so far , no bar oil everywhere and the saw cuts great too. 👍
Brave and confident well done, an eye-opener
Don't think they fixed it. I got 2- ms 180c and they both leak
Wow that not good.
A quick cut and you're in.
Hi Buzz
Yep short and sweet 👍
I think you will find that no matter how many new oil lines or what brand, the ms 170/180 will always leak oil. You may be onto something.
This is bone dry still , if I get any other leaks I will show it . So far so good but everyone I know that bought one has huge oil leaking. I hope they have fixed it by now .
Hello
Hi Terry
So glad to see your back in youtube posting saddle 👍
I'm next level cheese... Electric 120 leaked oil all over hell after 5 years. I'm going in - high possibility its going in the trash!
👍
Stihl has a service bulletin to put a set screw in a tiny hole between the bar and muffler.
Interesting, I'll have to see exactly where . Thanks 👍
If there is a orange plug it was corrected at the factory. If it's open order the set screw because it can be too long and block the passage to fat will crack the plastic.
can you explain this a bit so I know please. There is a oil tank vent. Plug that with a set screw?
Can you please add the link to this info please? I can't seem to find it. I have the same saw and same issue. Thank you.
Hell ya bud the jigsaw on the chainsaw eh'
👍👍
