      It's actually kinda sad . He had to tour most of the time to make a living . Moon Unit hardly saw her Dad . It was her idea to do a song with him and she just wanted to spend some time with him . She is one of the oldest kids , which meant she had to be like a second mom of the house while he was gone .

    "I have a theory: Nutrasweet ruins your memory..."
    Two years later, in 1988, I had a college Biology course and the Professor told us that aspartame breaks down into wood alcohol in the human body.
    Frank Zappa was onto something.

    • @dewitthobson2279
      @dewitthobson2279 2 года назад +2

      Actually, aspartame breaks down into two chemicals in the human body. Methyl alcohol is one, formaldehyde is the other. But at least the soft drinks that contain it are low in calories, that’s what is most important.

    Moon and Dweezil obviously love their genius Dad, then and now, but I couldn't help notice it was hard for them to answer what their favorite memory was growing up in their house. There's a good reason for that. I recommend anyone who's a fan of Frank's to read Moon's new book "Earth to Moon", it's quite a journey and gives a fuller picture of their family life.

    • @markcollins2666
      @markcollins2666 2 года назад +2

      Not "ahead of his time." He had his own original business model, which no one else copied, and probably never will. I've been listening to him since 1970, at age 14. His business year began on May 1, when he would spend the entire month, auditioning musicians for the coming year. Which would involve 2 tour contracts, 2 to 3 record deals, on whatever projects that interested him. Strictly hired guns, never bandmates. Come next May, repeat. One of a kind, not "ahead of his time."

    • @ladytess23
      @ladytess23 2 года назад +2

      @@ladytess23, I have seen him several times, both in the US and Europe, a perk for being in the US Army. One time, he had Don Pardo, the announcer from Saturday Night Live, as an emcee, in a shimmering white tuxedo. Too funny!!!

    • @markcollins2666
      @markcollins2666 2 года назад

      @@ladytess23, notice that his band member roster was never the same from year to year, members he wouldn't keep, or wouldn't stay, so many band name changes, down to just his own name, which was simply truth in advertising, since his musicians were merely hired, never stakeholders in any of his projects. I am a musician, playing flute and trombone, a happy combination for many of us, but there was a mean side to him. He referred to horn players as "mechanics" not musicians, and complained about what he had to pay the likes of us. Well, if we're in a band, that's one thing, but if you want us to perform, you pay us what we're worth, by the hour. He so much hated that, you see him hiring an entire orchestra, paying for a week's rehersal, and performance, and losing money on the deal. He gets the acclaim, then complains about how much he had to pay to make that happen ?!?! As much as I love his music, and pay for his recordings and shows, I really don't want to hear his complaints about his expenses over his selfish business model, especially since he's not exactly poor.

    David Brenner did such a great job of having a natural, casual conversation with Frank. I always find it difficult to talk to geniuses because I'm so in awe of them. I'd be a stuttering fool trying to talk to Frank Zappa. Much credit to David Brenner to being at ease with Frank and for putting Frank at ease. Moon had some very smart, funny and self-deprecating answers. Dweezil is on his way to becoming a legend as a musician and is one of the few people who really understand Frank's work and can reproduce it accurately. It was a pleasure to watch this interview.

      I second your sentiments, I would bet his detractors would be left speechless at how "square-ball" he appears! What would he make of the abysmal state of "pop" music now? I miss him and wish I had the money to buy ALL HIS MUSIC- SUCH A PROLIFIC MUSICIAN who turned me on to, many other musicians in other musical genres- a very avant-garde musical genius, experimental one whose name I can't remember- in the Shoenberg sort of style- off to the dictionary...Namaste

      That would be mostly due to his wife Gail. Frank ran his bands like a business, tour twice a year, make at least two, often three albums a year, and spend the entire month of May auditioning musicians. Not the most accessible Dad. Needed now in the music world?!? The music world consistently rejected him!!! On his album, Absolutely Free, he stated: "You must buy this album NOW. Top 40 radio will never, ever play it"

    As a person with an admitted "psychiatric illness" - an emotional disorder- I'm SANE like Frank, but I have tried 3x to Big Chill myself- MUSIC, INCLUDING FRANK'S PREVENTED ME FROM DOING IT- I had a "pseudo" ? if not "religious" quasi paranormal experience- the music? Maybe George Harrison? Maybe Leonard Cohen...maybe Frank Zappa- a remarkably "squareball" guy- I have two pictures of him, yes! And with my husband's "permission" ie love, and exasperation! on our front door- many young people ask, "who is that guy"- ? That saddens me, it really does, they don't know who this great musician is- he's got rolls of toilet paper in one- obvious reference to the Kulture and in the other, he has adorable pig-tails, yep, not Willie Nelson braids- and he points, draws attention to our Amnesty International "sticker"- we belong to Amnesty- they help more people than governments do AND NEARLY AS MANY, AS MUSIC DOES- if there were more father's like Frank Zappa we'd have a better world...AND TO ANYBODY WHO FEELS SUICIDAL OR IS IN, SUICIDE IDEATION MODE- PLEASE CALL 911, THE COPS, YOUR MOTHER, BEST FRIEND, NEIGHBOUR, DOCTOR- DON'T OFF YOURSELF- PLEASE GET HELP- your life might not ever be what you hope for but most issues can be worked on- you CAN live with despair- you can turn misery into ART, if you have talent and Vitamin B12- I'm serious! Depression robs you of energy and lethargy makes you more depressed...BLESS THE UNIVERSE NOT FOR RELIGIONS AND DOGMA, FRANK WAS RIGHT- WARS...BLESS MUSIC, ALL MUSIC...the wind in the trees, the rain on your roof/tent, the " sussurrus" the sound heavy snow makes against a window pane- all there...Namaste from A Forever Zappa Fan with a cat, not a kid, had none, named "Moon"-

    I don't know who this interviewer is but it is a great moment about 2.15 when he applies his Trumpian knowledge of history and talks of all the great classical music being written during the Crusades. I wish Frank had asked him to name a few of his favourite composers from the years 1100 to 1300.

      Sorry, I'm English so I've never heard of David Brenner. Late and great are words that could well be used to describe the extraordinary Frank Zappa. But I'm not so sure I would apply them so readily to someone like David Brenner who appears never to have opened a history book.

      Thanks, I didn't know him, but have now checked out a few videos on RUclips. He seems to have been a nice enough guy but the humour and style seems rather dated now and hasn't aged well. As I say he never really made it over this side of the pond, unlike many other US comedians of that era. Now Bill Hicks. we loved him over here. Both sadly no longer with us.

    I am in the process of listening to Moons audiobook.
    And this is probably some of the most interaction that they’ve had with Frank.
    Notice when David Brenner asked them what it’s like having Frank as a parent,
    They are totally dumbfounded, to know what to say.

    It's pretty wild how grounded Frank's kids were. Frank never let celebrity even register. By chance I saw Dweezil decades later on Celebrity Wife Swap, and it was nuts: he and his wife were so normal and down to earth, living in a small house snd charitable in such a hands-on way, while the other family was your typical wildly excessive celeb family. Credit to Frank and to Dweezil. Here's that episode (not free, sadly): ruclips.net/video/OrlE4KXDL90/видео.htmlsi=1qkYl7bWIJooOWci
